Simply adorable 4 out of 5 stars.

Gwyneth Paltrow takes on the Austenian role with all the elegance anyone could possibly bring. She and the rest of the cast are all perfect in a true romantic comedy with all of the Jane Austen-ness for which anyone could possibly ask. It's absolutely darling.

Emma - timeless 4 out of 5 stars.

I own this movie and it's one of those that I put on my dvd once a year. I've never grown tired of this classic story. Gwyneth is terrific in this. It's about finding love in the oddest of places. It's about judging people and making false character analysis. It's about making things right with good friends. And it's sweet and fun all wrapped up. I loved this movie and anyone who loves Jane Austen will like it.

Good 4 out of 5 stars.

you'll like this version. totally worth checking out. and then watch CLUELESS right after. you'll enjoy the mirror image better.

Cute! 3 out of 5 stars.

If you are fond of this kind of film you should like it. It's a cute little romance. Not serious but very light hearted and somewhat comical. I probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars if the cinematography and directing had been better. I also think the casting was a little blah, with the exception of Gwyneth Paltrow and Alan Cumming.
Paltrow nailed it! I'm not a huge fan of hers but she played the complicated Emma perfectly. Well meaning but trouble making, sweet but spoiled, generous but snobbish. She really made the character charming and believable. Alan Cumming was great to, but when is he not?
I defiantly recommend you give it a shot. It's not a movie you could watch over and over again, but at least once.

Worth paying for on the Kindle 5 out of 5 stars.

Kindle owners hopefully are aware of the wealth of free editions of the classics which are available through Feedbooks and other sources.

I obtained a copy of P&P from feedbooks originally and while it was easy to get and the price was right, the overall quality of the text is not great. I've found several typos, presumably the result of OCR errors and it's somewhat distracting.

Since P&P is one of my wife's favorite books, I was delighted to see
Penguin had released an electronic edition for $0.50 complete with the usual footnotes, essays and maps that one's used to
finding in textbook editions of the classics.

The table of contents is pretty minimal. The headings include the editor's material, and the three volume headings.

Editorial Review:

This is a beautiful new edition of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," the beloved novel which has been adapted into a movie starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, and an A&E series starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. [Complete and unabridged; large format (6"x9"); printed on high quality paper.]

Like many readers, I own the ubiquitous "hardcover with six novels plus" volume of Austen's works. While perfect for college and bookshelf vanity, it requires wrists of steel to read. This collection, however, is a hidden gem: inexpensive paperbacks that can be reread and carried with ease (beach, train, incredibly boring meetings, etc.). The quality of construction and typeface are significantly better than the price would suggest. First-time readers will be pleased with the three selected novels and they will likely be inspired to find Emma, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey on their own.

If you're wondering why you should buy Austen, well, Austen created the "modern" novel. In the western canon, there's a huge difference in what came before, Austen, and the writers who followed. While props go to Hemingway for stripping down language a century later, Austen shed the literary scene of the "impossibly-perfect heroine," replacing that figment with real women (though not quite so real as the servants that made their lives possible). While still in some ways conduits for morality tales, Austen's women are psychologically complex, decades before Freud: they think, they reason, they stand up for themselves and they have flaws, heaven forbid. No more of the either/or choice of virgin-or-whore. Austen likes her female characters and they are admirable. Not for nothing does Austen defend women in Persuasion by saying that, while all "histories are against them," those works were written by men. Austen liked her male characters as well, but recognized that when affairs of the(straight) heart were transferred to paper, the aggrieved parties with pens and the means to write and be published had all been men.

Editorial Review:

Three of the author’s most popular works—widely admired for their satiric wit, subtlety and perfection of style—brilliantly recreate the provincial world of the early 19th-century English countryside, focusing, respectively, on husband-hunting mothers and daughters, the humbling of proud lovers, and the return of a once-rejected lover. A Good Start To My Austen Book Craze 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have always loved Emma the movie, the one with Gwyneth Paltrow in it. Her Emma is so clueless, so innocent, yet somehow loveable. I finally decided to pick up the classic novel to see if the movie missed anything and to get the full story straight from the author. The book delighted me just as much as the movie did, as I am pleased to say.
Emma Woodhouse is a young, rich woman living with her germaphobe father in the town of Highbury. Bored and eager for some sort of excitement, she decides to matchmake her new friend Harriet Smith with the local vicar Mr.Elton. Emma is convinced that her matchmaking skills are among the best, wrongly taking credit for pairing her governess Miss Taylor with their neighbor Mr.Weston. Many mishaps occur, and many hearts broken and confused, but in the end all is well, with all three of the main couples finding happiness.
It took me a little while to get in the vocabulary of the time, but once I did the book breezed by. Emma is so flawed like all of us; that is why we love her. Just because this book was written almost 200 years ago doesn't make it bad: it makes it better.

Sense and Sensibility Review- Arghavan 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Taking place in Norland, England, in 1811, Jane Austen astounds her wide audience with yet another uplifting and eye-opening novel. Sense and Sensibility explores the life of the Dashwood family, consisting of the new widow Mrs. Dashwood and her two daughters, the composed and affectionate Elinor along with the sensible and spontaneous Marianne. Inheriting all of his father's money, John Dashwood visits his sister Mrs. Dashwood and gives the three devastated ladies a good share of his inherited money. During the visit, John Dashwood's wife, fanny, brings along her sensible older brother, Edward Ferrars, who develops a very close relationship with Elinor Dashwood. Although they are given a hard time by Fanny, Mrs. Dashwood, and the later promiscuous old friend Lucy Steele, Elinor and Edward establish and progress their love throughout the entire novel. As their love grows, Austen compares and contrasts the trait of sensibility, possessed by Marianne, and the trait of sense, possessed by Elinor. She does this through the two sisters' interactions with their significant others.
Just like almost all of Jane Austen's preceding novels, Sense and Sensibility dives into the themes of love and judgment. The reader learns how the characters in the novel become blind when they are in love, and the effect this has on their judgment.
Although it is a great read, I do not recommend it to just anybody. Readers must stay attentive to the multiple characters that are introduced throughout the novel; readers must also have strong patience because the novel is written with the old English dialect of the early 1800's. This is one of Jane Austen's best novels, in my opinion. In her novel Mansfield Park, she merely spends the whole novel demonstrating the progression of love in a New England town. In Sense and Sensibility, however, not only is the reader able to explore the development of love in a relationship between two people, but also the progression of individual character qualities, such as those of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. In totality, this novel is one of Jane Austen's best works.

Excellent collection - excellent bookseller 5 out of 5 stars.

The order went thru to an Amazon bookselling company in England. Couldn't be more pleased with their efforts. It took a while for the books to arrived, and I inquired too early as to a shipment date. They arrived the next day, by air mail. Good people, good books - a graduation present for my granddaughter.

Exquisite 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this set from an Amazon vendor in the UK Brown-Books-UK. Despite being in England they only took ten days to arrive in well-packed perfect condition. This set really is exquisite, the books are smaller in size (like books were in Jane Austen's day) than today's format. The box and each book are covered in fabric, the paper quality and print are excellent with gold edges, plus each book has an attached ribbon book mark. One couldn't ask for a more pleasing set. The stories, of course, speak for themselves to which any Jane Austen fan could attest. I would highly recommend this set to anybody wishing to purchase a Jane Austen set for either themselves or as a gift.

Portable, simple, and cute set for yourself or as a gift 5 out of 5 stars.

Facts: Each book is approximately a tad smaller than 4" x 6", each of varying thickness. All have gold leaf (edging). The pages are thin. The font is small but clear. The books are fiber hardcover, and have a matte paper dust jacket. Each has a dark red satin ribbon bookmark. There are a few 19th-century style illustrations in each volume.

My opinion: I absolutely love this set. The publisher was "Collector's Library" under the Barnes & Noble umbrella, and they made several classics with the same book binding style. There is a more contemporary feel to the books than the classic Oxford Illustrated volumes (which are also fabulous) because they don't contain anything fancy.

This is the sort of set that you would treat well and wouldn't mind reading repeatedly, but for which you might hesitate to loan to someone else because it's so nice. It's not a throwaway paperback. If you want explanations, extras, and heirloom quality, go see the Oxford set. If you want something simple, sturdy, small and cute, go with this one.

Jane Austen, Eight in One, bad idea 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I do not recommend this book based soley on the miniscule size of it's print.
I have read Austen's books before and wanted the whole collection. I am unable to read this one without a magnifying glass because the print is the size of the worst phone book you have ever tried to read. I intend to get a new collection, this time with readable print. What a mistake this one was!!

Editorial Review:

Jane Austen's complete novels, collected together in one uniquely comprehensive volume. Comprises the complete text of: "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice", "Mansfield Park", "Emma", "Northanger Abbey", "Persuasion", "Lady Susan", and "Love and Friendship". This is the only single-volume edition of Jane Austen's novels to contain not only the wickedly humorous "Lady Susan", but also the irrepressibly exuberant early work "Love and Friendship". This collection allows readers to explore the development of one of the English language's greatest writers, following her development from the farcical comedy of "Love and Friendship" and "Northanger Abbey", via her most popular work, "Pride and Prejudice", to the masterpiece "Emma", and the considered romance of "Persuasion". A unique collection of the finest and most perceptive love stories ever written.

Northanger Abbey: Janeites rejoice in this light and lively tour de force 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Northanger Abbey is a gem. Jane Austen (1775-1817)has written a charmiing little novel about a charming little lady named Catherine Moreland. Catherine is 15 as the novel begins in Wiltshire. She and the hilariously stupid Mrs. Allen go on a six week trip to nearby Bath to take the waters. Catherine meets the fashionable and fast Isabella Thorpe. Catherine dances with the clergyman Henry Tilney at a ball becoming infatuated with the clever young man. Henry and Catherine share a love for the Romantic Gothic novels of such authors as Ann Radcliff and Fanny Burney. Complications ensue but in the end the couple are wed.
The first half of the novel deals with doings in Bath; the second half is a trip taken by Catherine to the Tilney estate Northanger Abbey. Catherine thinks the house may contain a ghost as she is influenced in her thinking by a vivid imagination fueled by her sensational Gothic reading.
Minor characters are of interest: Captain Frederick Tilney the ladies man brother of Henry; old General Tilney the gruff father of Fred and Henry; Catherine's parents and Eleanor Tilney the kind and lovely sister of the two Tilney boys with whom Catherine forms a solid friendship.
The book includes a spirited defense of the art of novel writing by Miss Austen. It is a light and commonplace tale of young love told with the wit and wisdom of one of England's greatest authors. This less well known Austen novel is a delightful way to become an addict of the spinster from Hawton parsongage!

Editorial Review:

One of the first of Jane Austen's novels to be written, and one of the last to be published, Northanger Abbey is both an amusing story of how a naive girl enters society and wins the affection of a witty young clergyman, and a high-spirited parody of the lurid Gothic novels that were popular during Austen's youth. In the process it features a vivid account of social life in late eighteenth-century Bath, and Austen's famous defence of the novel as a literary form. This edition, based on the text of the novel as published posthumously in 1818, is accompanied by explanatory notes, and an appendix summarising the plots and situations of the Gothic fictions that form the basis of much of Austen's comedy. In addition there is an extensive critical introduction covering the context, publication, and critical history of the novel, a chronology of Austen's life, and authoritative textual apparatus.

Loved the book, but one drawback for the Kindle. 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I appreciated rereading Austen's work over the summer, and it was a natural choice for me to get it on my new Kindle. The pages look great and the type is adjustable. The one drawback was the size of the illustrations. Condensed onto the Kindle's screen they were difficult to appreciate. The fact that the book in e-version is so light to carry made up for this. It also made a difference in that the Kindle helped me look up the word "eclaircissement" as I was reading it.

Editorial Review:

Now in Penguin Classics—a treasure trove of Jane Austen’s novels

Few novelists have conveyed the subtleties and nuances of their own social milieu with the wit and insight of Jane Austen. Here in one volume are her seven great novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Lady Susan. Through her vivacious and spirited heroines and their circle, Austen vividly portrays English middle-class life as the eighteenth century came to a close and the nineteenth century began. Each of the novels is a love story and a story about marriage—marriage for love, for financial security, for social status. But they are not romances; ironic, comic, and wise, they are masterly evocations of the society Jane Austen observed. This beautiful volume covers the literary career of one of England’s finest prose stylists of any century.
