Editorial Review:

The most complete of all remaining surviving fragments sections of The Canterbury Tales, the First Fragment contains some of Chaucer's most widely enjoyed work. In The General Prologue, Chaucer introduces his pilgrims through a set of speaking portraits, drawn with a clarity that makes no attempt to conceal their peculiarities. The four tales that follow - those of the Knight, Miller, Reeve and Cook - reveal a wide variety of human preoccupations: whether chivalrous, romantic or simply sexual. Brilliantly bawdy and subtly complex, each of these tales is alive with Chaucer's skills as a poet, storyteller and creator of comedy.

Editorial Review:

This book makes this classic story available to a young readership while still capturing the atmosphere and suspense of the original story. Little did the travellers know that when they agreed to a storytelling competition on their way to Canterbury, they would be subjected to the Pardoner's crooked ways! Will the Pardoner convince the travellers to part with their money? Chaucer was the first great writer of English literature. His "Canterbury Tales" (inc. "The Pardoner's Tale") revolutionised medieval literature by telling stories about ordinary people. "The Pardoner's Tale" is one of the most popular and admired tales from Chaucer. This book is illustrated by Chris Mould. Consultant: Pat Pinsent, University of Surrey.

This version is Volume II with only 4 tales 3 out of 5 stars.

Not a complete version. This is Volume II which contains The Wife of Bath's Tale, The Clerk's Tale, The Reeve's Tale, and The Nun's Priest's Tale.

A great translation from the Middle English! 5 out of 5 stars.

There is quite an array of voices in this production with authentic-sounding accents. Very animated without being over done. I wouldn't let kids listen to the Wive's Tale, however; it is pretty risque.

Editorial Review:

Chaucer's greatest work, written towards the end of the fourteenth century, paints a brilliant picture of medieval life, society and values. The stories contained within this recording -- including The Clerk's Prologue and Tale, The Nun's Priest Prologue and Tale, The Prioress's Prologue and Tale, The Reeve's Prologue and Tale, The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale -- are told with freshness and vigor (in this modern verse translation by Frank Ernest Hill, 1935), that make them a delight to hear.

good edition in textbook format 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's obviously meant as a college text book, but where else can you find all of Chaucer's stuff with a reasonable amount of commentary ? Beware that this is in the original English, not a modernization.

Gotta Love That Chaucer!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is really nice. It looks good. The print is nice - not too big or too small. And it's really well bound. If you're looking for an all purpose book of Chaucer, this is the one. The volume also includes great foot notes, glosses, and historical commentary. It is heirloom quality. It is expensive, but if you like quality literature AND quality binding, you've found your match.

Editorial Review:

THE COMPLETE POETRY AND PROSE OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER is intended to make Chaucer's texts accessible with a minimum of scholary interference. The critical, biographical, and linguistic essays are grouped at the end so as not to impede the approach to the text. By doing so, the student is able to enjoy the richness and humor of The Canterbury Tales as well as the beauty of Troylus and Criseyde. This collection will create a deeper appreciation for Chaucer and his genius.

Not a complete version.. only has SOME of the tales. I didnt realize that when I bought it!

surprised and very displeased 1 out of 5 stars.
18 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is advertised and unabriged. What I received was Volume three of what may be a complete version, but it was not advertised as one of a series by any means. In addition, I was very sorry that it was recorded in modern english rather than the original middle english. If I had known, I would not have ordered and am pursuing a refund.

Editorial Review:

Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, a collection of narratives a frame story, written between 1387 and 1400, tells of a group of thirty people from all layers of society who pass the time along their pilgrimage to Canterbury by telling stories to one another, their interaction mediated (at times) by the affable Host Chaucer himself. Naxos AudioBooks' third volume presents the tales of 5 people, here in unabridged modern verse translation (by Frank Ernest Hill, 1935) an ideal way to appreciate the genuinely funny and droll talent of England's early master storyteller. Five leading British actors bring the medieval world into the 21st century, and at least in terms of character, not much seems to have changed!

Low quality print job 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a very poor quality edition of The Canterbury Tales. The pages look like they are photocopies of an old edition printed on cheap paper with warn type. I was so dissatisfied with this book, I purchased the "The Canterbury Tales: (original-spelling edition) (Penguin Classics)" and was very pleased.

Editorial Review:

The father of English literature shines in this authoritative selection from the greatest collection of narrative poems in the language.
