Not much to color 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book if the words of Chaucer are important to you--the "coloring" book is filled with text. The pictures are neat in that they're similar to wood-block prints that are contemporary to the period, but they aren't much fun to color, being that they take up a quarter of each page, at best, and aren't very detailed. It would be a great study aid for someone reading The Canterbury Tales, and interesting from a historical enthusiast's viewpoint, but not much fun to color, definitely for an older reader/artist, not really a kids' book.

Bellerophon being Bellerophon 5 out of 5 stars.

As anyone who has shopped through Bellerophon's fascinating catalog has learned, their "coloring books" are often enough targeted at those older than the usual Crayola age. Just as their "Infamous Women" and "Early Composers" titles are text-heavy, delightful reading for older kids or even adults, their Chaucer is primarily text: an inexpensive version of the General Prologue to the Canterbury Tales in the original Middle English, with original woodcuts by Caxton and other medieval artists. What would you ever use it for? Bellerophon doesn't care; they just offer it as it is. I used it, accompanied by a good recording of the GP, for introducing my 8-year-old to Middle English. She listened, read along, colored the woodcuts with pencils, and in the course of things memorized several dozen lines of Chaucer and came to love medieval poetry.

Don't hate Bellerophon for doing what they do: which is, producing out-of-the-ordinary, inexpensive "coloring books" for all ages.

Are You Man Enough to Be Husband Six? 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

There is no poet in any language of more extravagant wit and wisdom than old Geoffrey Chaucer, and no more universal, but for the challenge of the language. Like Homer in Greek, Dante in Italian, Chaucer set the bar too high for anyone ever to exceed him. And how fundamentally English he was, as if all the "personality" of our literature flowed from the same cultural spring!

My generation may have been almost the last to memorize the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales and to learn the few easy rules of pronunciation and syntax we needed to enjoy Chaucer. Helas! The times, they are a-changing. Still, a few years ago I had an irrational lust to revive my ability to read Middle English, just for fun. I discovered that there were audio-books of many of the Canterbury Tales, including the Wife of Bath's salacious masterpiece. Of all Chaucer's dramatis personae, the Wife of Bath is surely the most humanly convincing, the randy old dame! "Why, I'm probably just the right age to be husband number six," thought I. So I ordered this CD. By the time the CD reached me, I'd forgotten my urge to make use of it. In fact, I forgot I had it until yesterday, when it somehow popped out of the shelf at me.

Elizabeth Salter and her unnamed male foil speak the poetry of Chaucer with enough 'naturalness' to persuade me, particularly since recording technology was still rather crude in the 1300s. With the ability to pause the disk by remote, I find that I can follow the most familiar parts of the Wife's narrative comfortably. For most of the tale, however, I have to keep my eyes on the text. I wouldn't mind if Salter had delivered her words just a trifle slower, but then perhaps the rollicking cadences wouldn't have frolicked so mirthfully. There are lots of editions of the Canterbury Tales available with old and new English on facing pages, making the effort much easier.

This is probably not everyone's idea of fun, what with movies of Beowulf starring naked babes as Grendel's Mother and such. But Chaucer is too good to be lost. If YOU the parents of America no longer have the willpower to compel your teenagers to labor through the Canterbury Tales, then it's YOUR obligation to do so yourselves!

Editorial Review:

Cambridge School Chaucer is a new series exploring The Canterbury Tales and Chaucer's world through activities which challenge and inspire students. The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale has been carefully annotated to enable modern readers to understand the Middle English text which is placed in its fourteenth-century context. Illustrations and a map of the Canterbury pilgrimage also contribute to help bring the tale to life. There is also a running synopsis of the story, an explanation of unfamiliar words and a wide range of classroom-tested activities and suggestions for study. The description of the teller from The General Prologue introduces this vivid character.

Editorial Review:

Taking the stage after the Knight and his lofty tale of courtly love, the drunken miller regales the pilgrims with the account of a young scholar, Nicholas, who persuades his aged landlord’s beautiful young wife to go to bed with him. Having successfully duped the husband and made his conquest, he finds himself the butt of his own practical joke played on a rival suitor, in the process giving rise to a famously farcical end sequence.

NOT Chaucer's Original 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Despite the description on the cover, this volume does not contain Chaucer's original; instead it provides a very poor verse translation into Modern English, along with a prose synopsis. Don't be fooled; there are other parallel text versions that actually provide the Middle English original.

Great Service! 5 out of 5 stars.

Well glossed with lots of help 5 out of 5 stars.
41 of 41 people found this review helpful.

This edition is designed for those coming to the Middle English for the first time. All the difficulties are glossed, usually on the same line in italics. Far more glossing than any other edition. The spelling has also been regularized so that the same word is spelt the same each time. There are other aids as well: past participles are set as y-clept not yclept, and there are footnotes for particularly difficult lines.

Editorial Review:

For this new critical edition of "The Canterbury Tales", the editors have selected the most popular and admired of Chaucer's tales, together with the complete General Prologue. Each tale is presented in Chaucer's original verse but with modern spelling and substantial glossing. As with all Norton Critical Editions, "The Canterbury Tales" also includes sections on sources and backgrounds, and criticism. The Tales included are as follows: "The Knight's Tale", "The Miller's Prologue and Tale", "The Reeve's Prologue and Tale", "The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale", "The Clerk's Prologue and Tale", "The Franklin's Prologue and Tale", "The Pardoner's Prologue and Tale", "The Prioress's Prologue and Tale" and "The Nun's Priest's Prologue and Tale".
