I love HBO for introducing me to the world of Sookie Stackhouse. I find the book series very entertaining with the same dark humor. The HBO series has done great staying with the original story line & its portrayal of the characters, and although the book series in only from Sookie's point of view, I'm finding that I enjoy the books much better than the show (and I'm a huge fan of the show!).

If you are considering getting "sucked" into the book series after becoming addicted to the HBO series, I recommended it, you won't be let down.

I was hoping this would be a great story (being that the movie is causing all sorts of hype and it won a number of awards). I had a lot of trouble finishing this book. The characters never fully develop. The writing is sparse and poor. The main character asks questions throughout that are meant to be thought-provoking but detract from the story and make you feel like you're sitting through a seminar with a boring professor. There are plenty of good books about the Holocaust--and this isn't one of them. Don't waste your money OR your time.

A Fulfilling Picture of an Ignored Country 5 out of 5 stars.

The Kite Runner is one of the most beautiful books that I've read in a long time. Hosseini weaves a masterpiece as told through the narrator, Amir. The story is about two young boys, Amir and Hassan, who grow up in Afghanistan. During their youth, Amir does a great wrong to Hassan and lives with a cloud of shame until the day he is finally able to redeem himself.

One of the most memorable items in the book is the back drop of the story: Kabul, Afghanistan. I always picture the Afghanistan of today: men in turbans and women covered head to toe. But Hosseini provides a picture of Kabul before Russia and the Taliban invade. It is a picture of a modern country with boys in corduroys and vests. The book made me a lot more interested in the crisis that is occuring in Afganistan today. Hosseini also presented a culture full of pride, humility, humor and politeness. All of which, I did not expect.

Overall, this is one of the best books that I've read (and I've read a lot). I didn't quite believe all of the hype, but this book definitely fulfilled my expectations.

The language in this book is weird and inconsistent. It's like the authors took their college papers from Nutrition 101, bound them together, and, on the advice of some marketing agent, sprinkled the final product with "dumb b*tches" and "you stupid douche bags." The effect is off-putting, like listening to your college professor curse and it's clear to everyone in the room that the only reason she's doing it is to sound cool to her students.

One thing that I really appreciate about this book is the "Have No Faith" chapter, which reveals that agencies like the FDA are more interested in making money than in protecting us. If there's one thing our society needs, it's more discerning consumers who know the true value of the statement "FDA approved." Also, I disagree with the people who say that this book was advertised deceitfully: it *is* a weight-loss book; it's just not the weight-loss book that most people expect it to be.
