I look forward to this series every year, so it was with high hopes that I opened up this year's editon and began to read. The format is the same as it has been for years, with Ms. Pitlor cherry picking stories and handing over a hundred or so vetted stories to the guest editor. I don't get too caught up in who the guest editor is in any given year - I think Ms. Pitlor does a good job in gathering a pool of quality stories, but this year I thought the overall effort was slightly below the average.

Four of the stories in the collection come from Harper's Magazine, and while I was glad to see the series move away from being so New Yorker oriented, I subscribe to Harper's, so those stories weren't new to me. To of them deserved rereading anyway - the masterful Alice Munro with "Child's Play", and Nicole Krauss, "From the Desk of Daniel Varsky."

Two of the three stories from the New Yorker were also quite well done - "Puppy", by George Saunders, and "Nawabdin Electrician" by Daniyal Mueenuddin. Others that I felt really rose above were "Buying Lenin" by Miroslav Penkov, "Man and Wife," by Katie Chase, and "Straightaway," by Mark Wisniewski.

Four of the stories in this collection would fall under what I would loosely consider 'Fabulist' stories, and those are not really my thing, although I still enjoyed "Man and Wife." Perhaps that is a trend, because I don't remember as much of that in years past.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about this series is that it collects stories I'm sure I'd never get to see otherwise, and that always makes it worth it to me. This year, I would just have to say that not all of it was as interesting to me as other years. I would still definetly recommend it to anyone who enjoys short stories.

Editorial Review:

Never-before-published vampire stories by Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong, and many others.

Suspenseful, surprising, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous-these all-new stories will ensure that readers never think of vampires (or birthdays) in quite the same way again.

In New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris's "Dracula Night," Sookie Stackhouse is the only human at the annual commemoration of Dracula's birth. But this year, the Prince of Darkness actually shows up-and finds Sookie to be a tasty-looking present.

New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher's crime-solving wizard Harry Dresden, of the Dresden Files novels, heads to a role-playing party to give his vampire brother a birthday present in "It's My Birthday Too," only to discover there are some bloodthirsty party crashers who don't share their brotherly love.

In "Twilight," Cassandra DuCharme, who appeared in New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's Dime Store Magic, knows she has to kill to live as a vampire another year-but finds herself disturbingly disinterested in the hunt.

Plus ten more bloody good birthday stories that take the cake.

A Comeback For J.R. Ward 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am die hard fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon whose stories are always full of emotional intensity and she always remains true to her fans; however, J.R. Ward's "The Story of Son" eclipsed all of the others. I must admit that although I have read all of J.R. Ward's Brotherhood series, the last two books left me wondering what was happening in the mind of J.R. Ward. In one book the heroine was a ghost and in her last book the hero was a drug addict- this made me question if she'd forgotten what made a busy woman want to pick up and take the time to read a romance novel in the first place. Well I must say, Ms. Kenyon finally remembered. I have already read "The Story of Son" three times and I wish it were longer. The innocence and sensitivity of a lonely vampire out of touch with the world, yet instinctively knowing just what a woman wants- when to be aggressive and when to be tender-was so endearing and not just to me but to the hard-nosed heroine who finally recognized the missing piece of feminity that made her both strong and soft. Although this was a short story, it didn't feel rushed like some of the others did. The characters were so well developed that I really felt I knew them and I didn't want to say goodbye to Claire and her ability to recognize what she wanted and needed or to Michael's protectiveness and and willingness to leave the familiar when his mate and unborn child were threatened). J.R. Ward finally concentrated on the two individuals in the story that meant the most and not on a thousand other plot lines. I hope Ms. Ward keeps this type of writing at the forefront because I can't wait to read her next book.

If I had to rank the stories of this anthology in order of "must read" to "can do without", this is the order they'd be placed in: The Story of Son(Ward), Shadow of the Moon(Kenyon), Beyond the Night(Squires), and Midnight Kiss Goodbye(Love).

Forced from the get-go, just plain bad writing 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Similar to other authors, I like the JD Robb books and buy these anthologies to "discover" new writers I might like. These three can certainly stay on the bookshelf, the writing was awful. Even the Eve Dallas story was forced, though the writing was good. The "suite 606" theme was ABSURD and made absolutely no sense in the second story and was an afterthought in the third story. I generally like these anthologies, just don't force some silly theme on all the stories.

Sheer Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

What happens when four top-notch authors come together in one fun anthology? Well, readers get DOUBLE THE PLEASURE!

Lori Foster starts this anthology off with a bang with "Deuces Wild"! Dex Winston reluctantly agrees to impersonate his twin brother, Hart, for a short period of time. After all, what could go wrong? But that was before Dex met Christy Nash. Will Christy forgive Dex when she realizes he's not who she thought he was?

Lori Foster writes yet another superb story as "Deuces Wild" is one heck of an emotional tale! Dex's anguish is palpable as his promise to his brother conflicts with his desire to be honest with Christy. Who can't help but love a man like Dex? Christy's reactions are priceless as she is just one of the nicest, most genuine characters. She more than deserves her happily-ever-after. However, I can't help but admit that I can't wait to see what kind of woman will capture Hart's heart! Lori Foster is at the top of her game with "Deuces Wild"!

In "The Luck of the Irish", Deirdre Martin departs from her sports romances to bring readers the first book in her Wild Hart Saga. Maggie O'Brien is determined that no man will ever break her heart again. Brendan Kelly has his sites set on Maggie. But Brendan has a secret....

Deirdre Martin creates a charming ambiance for "The Luck of the Irish". It's easy to feel like one knows the various characters as the secondary characters add a sense of warmth and friendliness to the overall tale. But it's the sparks flying between Maggie and Brendan that take center stage! Deirdre Martin has a new fan in this reviewer with "The Luck of the Irish".

Jacquie D'Alessandro takes on the corporate world in "Your Room or Mine?" Jack Walker is the new head of his department but he's stuck dealing with his worst nightmare... a consultant! Maddie Price is used to difficult assignments but will she survive a weekend bonding experience with Jack and his department? Does the attraction between Jack and Maddie stand a chance?

Oh, who can't help but love when two people clash as much as Jack and Maddie do? The resulting sparks are sizzling! Jacquie D'Alessandro does an excellent job at showing how easy it is to misread another person's true personality. The scenes where Maddie and Jack had to look past their own perceptions of one another are outstanding but it is the ending that makes this story really stand out.

Penny McCall concludes this anthology with "Double the Danger". Dr. Abigail West is shocked when the John Doe she's about to autopsy is her former lover, Drake. Even more shocking is when it turns out Drake isn't really dead. Abby soon finds herself on a madcap adventure in which danger lurks on every corner and her very heart is at stake.

Penny McCall finishes DOUBLE THE PLEASURE with a wildly humorous and fast paced tale. "Double the Danger" is a nonstop ride, chock full of action until the very last page. The side story of Virgil is entertaining as Penny McCall keeps readers guessing as to what zany thing will happen next. "Double the Danger" is an exciting finale and leaves this reader wanting to read more by this talented author.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE is sheer fun. Each story is well-written and entertaining making this an anthology that is easily recommended!

Editorial Review:

Zane, the New York Times bestselling author and Queen of
Erotic Fiction, brings a new collection of lesbian erotica
that will blow the sheets off beds everywhere.

What happens when "The Finest Man" you have ever laid eyes on is a woman? What happens when a woman comes home to her man after a hard day's work with "Lipstick on Her Collar?" What happens when a married woman runs across the love of her life -- another woman -- who insists that "It's All or Nothing?" Is there such a thing as playing too "Hard to Get?" What happens when "Mom's Night Out" turns into group sex? What happens when you discover your true sexuality "At Last?" All of these questions and more are answered within the pages of Purple Panties.

Written by women from all over the world, here is a new level of lesbian erotica, compiled by Zane, that promises the most exciting and steamy reading experience possible. These stories move beyond race, age, and all walks of life, including long-hidden passions, secret rendezvous with strangers, and May-December romances.

With Zane's ever-growing popularity, and the need for increasingly quality erotica, Purple Panties will satisfy a long-standing demand for African-American lesbian literature.

In the tradition of such successful erotica anthologies as Chocolate Flava and Caramel Flava, Purple Panties uncovers a new world of evocative risk-taking that has never been explored before from a lesbian perspective. The adventures in these stories are beyond everyone's wildest imaginations.

Phenomenal! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Christmas is a time of magic and joy and four spectacular authors have a special treat for readers this year with THE MAGICAL CHRISTMAS CAT.

Nalini Singh kicks off this anthology with "Stroke of Enticement". Zach Quinn, a DarkRiver soldier, is instantly attracted to Annie Kildaire. Annie is used to working with changelings in her role as teacher, but how will she handle Zach's determined pursuit of her?

Nalini Singh is without a doubt one of the best paranormal romance writers in print today. Her Psy-Changeling series is a deeply emotional, multilayered world and "Stroke of Enticement" offers up a tiny taste of it. Nalini Singh not only writes a beautifully moving romance with Annie and Zach's story, but she also tackles the tough issue of prejudice. Ms. Singh's sensitivity at addressing prejudice is to be commended, particularly as she weaves it into the storyline smoothly and effectively. Nalini Singh is one of my favorite authors and "Stroke of Enticement" is another stellar example of why her books are must-reads!

Erin McCarthy's "Christmas Bree" is connected to her story in AN ENCHANTED SEASON. Bree Murphy is horrified when her sister predicts that her true love will arrive wearing a pink shirt. There's just no way such a man would appeal to Bree! And then Ian Carrington shows up at her door....

Bree is the sister I wanted to read about after finishing "Charlotte's Web", so I am glad to see she has her own story. Erin McCarthy does not disappoint as the repartee between these two diametrically different characters is nothing short of hilarious! However, I have to say that Akasha the cat steals the show. In fact, there is one scene involving Ian, Bree, and Akasha that still makes me laugh out loud! Kudos to Erin McCarthy for infusing humor into a sexy paranormal story.

It all starts with a Secret Santa gift in "Sweet Dreams" by Linda Winstead Jones. Ruby Kincaid receives a cat figurine from a mysterious secret admirer. Little does she realize the danger she is in from dark supernatural forces. Zane Benedict knows about the menacing evil that now hopes to prey on Ruby, but is there any way to save her?

"Sweet Dreams" is the surprise hit of THE MAGICAL CHRISTMAS CAT. I have read and enjoyed other stories by Linda Winstead Jones but "Sweet Dreams" is exactly what I hope to see more of in paranormal romances. The depth and complexity of the threat stalking Ruby is well explained and the eerie atmosphere created by Linda Winstead Jones only serves to enhance this. "Sweet Dreams" offers a complexity not often found in short stories and is a true gem, even in an anthology as good as THE MAGICAL CHRISTMAS CAT.

Lora Leigh concludes this anthology with "Christmas Heat". Haley McQuire doesn't like parties and this one has turned into a sheer disaster. She witnesses a meeting in which the very safety of the Breeds is at stake and she turns to enforcer Noble Chavin for help. Can Noble keep her safe, even as the mating heat turns his thoughts to more pleasurable things?

"Christmas Heat" is part of Lora Leigh's Breeds series but easily stands on its own merits. Haley is a likable heroine, as she shows a feisty nature under her seemingly sedate librarian exterior. Her consideration and care for her friends' well being when her own is at stake is endearing. Noble is as intense as one would expect from any of the Alpha males in this series, but it's hard not to fall in love with him as he begins to see the joy of Christmas. "Christmas Heat" is another hit from Lora Leigh!

THE MAGICAL CHRISTMAS CAT is a phenomenal Christmas anthology as all four authors deliver top-notch stories. The cat theme is cleverly used in different ways as each author offers her own unique take on the holiday season. THE MAGICAL CHRISTMAS CAT is one of those rare anthologies in which each story is fantastic. Highly recommended!

Very good, but not as good as Me Talk Pretty One Day 5 out of 5 stars.

I prefer Me Talk Pretty One Day, my husband prefers this one. Both excellent books!

I love this book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

So I feel compelled to write a review. This book is absurd. It is perverse. It sometimes is uncomfortable to read. I didn't love it the first time I read it and it has grown on me like a fungus. I certainly understand why lots and lots of people don't like it but I would like to impress on those who are reading the reviews that the book is not BAD, just a little unpolished. It seems that the speaker is a chain-smoking, neurotic, self-absorbed, outcast whose mind can never slow down. And these are those 3 am rants that pop up in his brain. Any they are funny, in a really dark way.

Editorial Review:

A collection of stories and essays by humorist and NPR commentator David Sedaris based upon his own experiences and the hidden perversity that can be found in Anytown, U.S.A. Here are images and blasphemies that nice people don't dare look at--blatantly exposed and told with the clear, casual voice of intimate knowledge. Sedaris' humor is born of compassion and his tales range from the sharing of cheery Christmas letters featuring infanticide, to experiences of the Gay and Famous (Charlton Heston and Elizabeth Dole, for example), to the lives of siblings named Hope, Faith, Charity and Adolph and to alcoholics and chain smokers you can laugh with.

Editorial Review:

Although Jorge Luis Borges published his first book in 1923--doling out his own money for a limited edition of Fervor de Buenos Aires--he remained in Argentinian obscurity for almost three decades. In 1951, however, Ficciones appeared in French, followed soon after by an English translation. This collection, which included the cream of the author's short fictions, made it clear that Borges was a world-class (if highly unclassifiable) artist--a brilliant, lyrical miniaturist, who could pose the great questions of existence on the head of pin. And by 1961, when he shared the French Prix Formentor with Samuel Beckett, he seemed suddenly to tower over a half-dozen literary cultures, the very exemplar of modernism with a human face.

By the time of his death in 1986, Borges had been granted old master status by almost everybody (except, alas, the gentlemen of the Swedish Academy). Yet his work remained dispersed among a half-dozen different collections, some of them increasingly hard to find. Andrew Hurley has done readers a great service, then, by collecting all the stories in a single, meticulously translated volume. It's a pleasure to be reminded that Borges's style--poetic, dreamlike, and compounded of innumerable small surprises--was already in place by 1935, when he published A Universal History of Iniquity: "The earth we inhabit is an error, an incompetent parody. Mirrors and paternity are abominable because they multiply and affirm it." (Incidentally, the thrifty author later recycled the second of these aphorisms in his classic bit of bookish metaphysics, "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Teris.") The glories of his middle period, of course, have hardly aged a day. "The Garden of the Forking Paths" remains the best deconstruction of the detective story ever written, even in the post-Auster era, and "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" puts the so-called death of the author in pointed, hilarious perspective.

But Hurley's omnibus also brings home exactly how consistent Borges remained in his concerns. As late as 1975, in "Avelino Arredondo," he was still asking (and occasionally even answering) the same riddles about time and its human repository, memory: "For the man in prison, or the blind man, time flows downstream as though down a slight decline. As he reached the midpoint of his reclusion, Arredondo more than once achieved that virtually timeless time. In the first patio there was a wellhead, and at the bottom, a cistern where a toad lived; it never occurred to Arredondo that it was the toad's time, bordering on eternity, that he sought." Throughout, Hurley's translation is crisp and assured (although this reader will always have a soft spot for "Funes, the Memorious" rather than "Funes, His Memory.") And thanks to his efforts, Borgesians will find no better--and no more pleasurable--rebuttal of the author's description of himself as "a shy sort of man who could not bring himself to write short stories." --James Marcus
