Editorial Review:

For more then eight centuries, poets and writers have been telling stories about King Arthur. From lost legends and scraps of history, from facts and folklore, has been fashioned one of the greatest epics in all literature, full of the world's splendours, heroic loves and spiritual quests. This anthology is a celebration of the magical and mysterious world founded on the figure of an obscure Welsh princeling, of Arthur's exploits in literature, of his far-famed knights and their ladies, of all the high trappings of romance. Here for the first time is a single volume which gives the reader an idea of the power and range of Arthurian literature from its beginnings to the present day. All the great Arthurian writers are represented, from France, Germany and England, and the text is complemented by a superb selection of full colour illustrations.

Editorial Review:

Award Winner Independent Publishers Book Awards 2008. Suspense, Intrigue, Magic and Mysticism at Its Best With unexpected plot twists, the two couples that translated unknown scrolls in Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls, are now shocked out of complacency when Ellen has a surprising encounter with a mysterious old-world type of man who disappears as fast as he appears, leaving Ellen with a portmanteau filled with ancient documents that when translated will shock the world. The two couples now married and, parents of small children are leading comfortable lives when they are plunged into a new adventure of danger, mystery, antagonists, love and revelations while attempting to translate these new documents. What is the legacy Mary Magdalene left for the world? Mary Magdalene has long been an enigma. To some she is the goddess resurrected and to others she is the mysterious one hidden by written history to keep knowledge of her greatness from being known. Now comes a dynamic atmospheric story of passion and intrigue with the commitment of four people who choose to translate new documents never before revealed to the world. Bettye Johnson has written a sequel that surpasses her first book, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls, as the two couples determined to translate the new documents are thrust once more into situations that place them in jeopardy along with their children. Again, Johnson has created a powerful novel that keeps the reader turning pages with anticipation.

King Arthur and His Knights 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book was about how King Arthur's life supposedly was. He was born after King Uther tricked an enemy duke's wife into thinking that Uther was her husband. That child was given to Merlin, and he was un-christened, and was given to Sir Ector. He became a squire at his new home and had a bigger stepbrother to help. When the sword in the stone appeared, all the knights and noblemen around England appeared to try and pull it out, since the person who pulls out the sword in the stone is supposedly the king of all England. Throughout his life he encountered many people like Sir Lancelot of the Lake, who fell in love with his beloved wife, Guinevere, and also gave birth to a child with his half-sister when she disguised herself. He would later become a legend for all the things he had done during his life.

I read this book because I watched the movie from Disney called "The Sword in the Stone." It sparked my interest of knights and I was fascinated with the Middle Ages ever since. Then when I went to the library, this book was the only one about King Arthur that wasn't checked out, so I read this wonderful recount of the amazing life of Arthur.

I recommend this book to everyone above the age of 9. There are some "not so good for children parts" in this book. If you are a child who wants to read about King Arthur, then you should choose this book. If you want something that is easier, I suggest you not to select this book since it is kind of a hard book.

Editorial Review:

1927. This work is based on "Morte d' Arthur" written by Sir Thomas Malory. This story, which has so deeply impressed itself upon the hearts and minds of men, centers on the shadowy but heroic figure of Arthur, king of the Britons in the 5th or 6th century. It has flowed over time by being told by various authors, and on this current it carried the elements of all the influences and ideals that were gradually determining the nature and standards of the English-speaking world. Handsomely illustrated.

Beautiful, A Gem of Romantic Literature 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Gaiwan would be worth the purchase if only for the story line alone. However Marie Borroff's amazing translation adds that beauty and eloquence which only a master translator can produce. Borroff uses an alliterative meter which will get you tongue tied if you try and read it out loud. For example the first line is "Since the siege and the assault was ceased at Troy." She also gives us beautiful rhymes at the end of each stanza, like in lines 1236-1240: "My body is here at hand,/ Your each wish to fulfill;/ Your servant to command/ I am, and shall be still/." The story is full of symbolism, and confronts us with a tough philosophical question. You have to read the book to find out what that is however. The book also deals with the problems inherent in the institution of chivalry, and especially courtly love. Overall I thought the story was wonderful, the translation impeccable, and the underlying message profound.

Editorial Review:

The Arthurian saga is one of the most enduring legends of Western civilization. In her sweeping and magnificent multi-volume work The Hallowed Isle, acclaimed author Diana L. Paxson brilliantly reinvents the classic myth from the unique perspectives of four distinct tribal cultures that shaped Britain in the violent days of the sixth century.

Book One: The Book of the Sword

Mighty Rome subjugated the isle of Britain only to abandon it, leaving behind a bloody patchwork of warring tribes. To put an end to this conflict, Artoria Argantel--Lady of the Lake and Druid priestess--has called upon the Spirit of War and Justice to deliver a champion who will unite the broken land. A champion who will come from her own ancient and royal blood. For only one man can wield the sword forged from star-steel by ancient spells. Only one man can free the sword from its prison of stone: Artor, a fosterling of unknown parentage...the promised High King.

Book Two: The Book of the Spear

A Saxon of royal blood, Oesc has fled the drowned, doomed country to which he is heir in order to claim rich lands in Britannia. Though sworn to the spirits of his new home, he truly serves the dark sorcery of an older god--the power of the Spear. But the Spear's magic is opposed by that of the Sword of Rome, the sword wielded by young King Artor and his father Uthir before him. The sword that slew Oesc's own father. Now vengeance burns fiercely in Oesc's heart, a lust for revenge that could destroy a greatness before it fully blooms. Destiny lies in the clashing of magic steel...the hope of all Britannia rests in the hands of the warrior sons.

A Wonderful Addition To A Great Series! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the second book in the Merlin's Legacy and it is a great addition to this series. This is the story about Merlin's daughter Brianna. She is the daughter of the Mist and she has a challange ahead of her that will change her life.

Tarek al Sharif is bastard born and does not have the memory of family and love but he is driven by the memory of a golden haired girl that helped him and saved his life. He has loved her from the first moment that he saw her and he plans on finding her again.

The path to true love is not a smooth one for these two characters. There is danger in the form of a person that wants control of Inverness and of course "the darkness" is always on the fringes looking in and waiting for the perfect time to cause trouble. Tarek must choose between the love for his changeling bride or avenging his past. The chemisty between the two main characters is great. They don't just fall into bed and thats the end. Their love grows and I feel that is why most people red romance. This book has it all mystical legends, and romance. This is a not to be missed story. It is well worth your effort and time to get a hold of a copy!

Editorial Review:

Trapped between the worlds of reality and enchantment, Brianna of Scotland, Merlin's second daughter, a changeling who possesses the power to take animal form, finds love with Tarek al Sharif, who has come to Scotland to claim lands promised him by William the Conqueror. Original.

A Great Welsh Romp!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Since I am good friends with GG, I was sent an advanced copy from Deseret to read and review and since I am of Welsh descent and am an avid Genealogist, I loved this thriller. It is a two mystery in one and was able to figure the first one out, but the one who murdered Maren's sister, was a toughie and surprising at the end and was a sad ending, but was inevitable. I rather enjoyed the short chapters like Mary Higgins Clark. I enjoyed the angle of believing that King Arthur is real with the hidden manuscript. I recommend this novel with lots of twists and turns to anyone that loves to read mysteries ala Agatha Christie and Clark.

Editorial Review:

Is the story of King Arthur history or myth? In this spellbinding novel, a Celtic scholar is murdered when she finds a clue to a priceless 13th century manuscript that will provide the true identity of King Arthur. The victim's sister takes up the quest to uncover the relic, but quickly realizes that someone close to her is the murderer. As pursuit of the manuscript winds through the ruined castles and monasteries of Wales, more than one reason emerges for keeping the manuscript and the legend buried in the past.

The passions of the weak that traps the strong 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

So far I have read "The Scarlet Pimpernel," "The Elusive Pimpernel" and I had just finished "El Dorado." This last book wounded me emotionally so much I'm still hurting.

I had watched Jane Seymoure's version(1982) of the movie before so I had an idea of the plot. I knew Armand would be the cause of our hero's troubles but I didn't know it was going to be such a near death experience... The price Percy had to pay for Armand's folly was just too much.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
I was spell-bound by Percy's attitude through-out... he was a visionary but he was realistic enough to accept that 'mayhaps'... Chauvelin would win tis time. So he told Sir Andrews before going back to Paris: <>

But then, I was horrified when I understood the depth of Armand's folly. In the movie, he was just impulsively stupid. The book reveals a much darker truth... so terrible that Percy had to try hard to conceal it from Margarite. He forgave Armand for Margarite's sake, but if she knew... she would hate her brother for life, and that Percy had to keep from happening (since if he died, Margarite would have no one left but Armand).

And the comment the impulsive brother-in-law threw at Percy: "You do not know what love is!" This comment hit Percy so hard that he not only agrees with Armand but he mentions it several times after: "We both agreed that I do not know what love is." That's what he says, but his actions speak otherwise.

As for Armand, his way of loving is too selfish, impulsive and inmature. I wonder who was the one who really "didn't know..."

Editorial Review:

Armand St Just, his beautiful sister Marguerite and her husband Sir Percy Blakeney are once again caught up in the turmoil of revolutionary France. And adventurer Baron de Batz enters the story. It is 1794 and Paris, 'despite the horrors that had stained her walls - had remained a city of pleasure, and the knife of the guillotine did scarce descend more often than did the drop-scenes on the stage.'

superb historical fantasy 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Griffin Kirkwood was supposed to be this generation's Pendragon but he turned his back on his magical heritage to become a catholic priest. His twin brother Donovan was too weak to pick up the mantle so the Pendragon skips a generation. Griffin's daughter Deidre and Donovan's son Hal journey to France with familiars to prevent the massacres that are imminent. While working the spell, Hal is captured by El Lobison and turned into a werewolf.

He escapes and keeps his distance from the family for many years while Deidre becomes a spy for Queen Elizabeth I. Time after time Deidre helps prevent the plots of Mary, Queen of Scots to oust Elizabeth. Mary eventually goes too far and forces Elizabeth to act. Knowing that if Mary is executed, Philip of Spain's armada will launch, Deidre begs Elizabeth to stay her hand. When her efforts fail, Deidre is willing to use powerful magic that may end up killing her to keep England safe but Hal refuses to see the love of his life die.

The Merlin's Descendants series uses magic to explain pivotal historical events that played a key role in the history of Great Britain. Although never formally invested with the title, Deidre is her generation's Pendragon because she puts England's need above her own, willing to give her life to see her country stay free. Hal is more of a tragic heroic figure who doesn't succumb to his werewolf nature and is a proper mate for Deidre even if they are first cousins. Irene Radford's latest novel is a magnificent fantasy epic using real historic events and people to make the story line seems believable.

Harriet Klausner

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, the fourth novel in Irene Radford's acclaimed saga of Merlin and his descendants follows the children of twin brothers Donovan and Griffin, in a magic-fueled struggle to protect Elizabethan England from enemies-both mortal and demonic.

Editorial Review:

For over 1,000 years, tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table have enthralled people, among them Henry VIII and T.E. Lawrence. Proof of the Arthurian legend's timeless appeal is the fact that scarcely a year goes by without a new adaptation. Published in 1485, Sir Thomas Malory's epic poem Le Morte d'Arthur became the standard source for future Arthurian works such as Idylls of the King by Lord Tennyson and T.H. White's The Once and Future King.

With its expressive, vigorous dialogue, Le Morte d'Arthur resounds with colloquial liveliness and ceremonious dignity, the style for a 15th-century gentleman. This audio recording grips the listener with the fascinating, fateful story of Arthur's ascension to the throne as a boy, his marriage to Guenevere, the formation of the Round Table Knights, the quest for the Holy Grail, the ill-fated passion between Lancelot and Guenevere, the treachery of Arthur's illegitimate son Mordred, and the ultimate destruction of Arthur's realm.

A superb story of adventure, love, honor, and betrayal, Le Morte d'Arthur is filled with dramatic power and deep, tragic irony.
