Editorial Review:

Bestselling author E. Lynn Harris is back with another sexy, shocking, and immensely satisfying novel that explores some of today’s toughest and most timely issues.

Chauncey Greer is the owner of Cute Boy Card Company, a thriving company in Atlanta. As a teenager, he was a member of a popular boy band, but left in disgrace when word got out that he and his bandmate D were more than good friends. Chauncey is a free spirit, on the brink of forty with a body admired by both men and women. Not into being categorized, Chauncey’s been known to hook up with men and women, but now in the age of the “down low,” he’s found that women ask too many questions, so he’s just focusing on the fellas.

After one too many bad dates, Chauncey finds himself in church, where the minister’s message inspires him to follow his dream of a singing career once again. Although he’s lost touch with D, as he starts writing songs his thoughts inevitably turn to his former lover. Chauncey’s powerful performance at the church earns him a standing ovation and an invitation to participate in an upcoming revival. But Chauncey soon discovers that an ambitious fundamentalist preacher plans to use the revival to speak out against gays and gay marriage. Feeling angry and betrayed, Chauncey and other gay members of the church decide to take a stand against the church’s homophobia by staging a “Day of Absence” when all of the gay members and their friends and family stay home. Everything is going as planned... until D appears on the scene and Chauncey has to confront his past and make some hard decisions about his future.

I Say A Little Prayer is filled with the delicious plot twists, humor, compassion, and up-to-the-minute controversy fans expect from their beloved “E. Lynn.” Harris has returned with another gem of a novel that will rocket to the top of bestseller lists nationwide.

I only got to the first chapter before I closed the book and headed to the store to get my own copy...lol. I knew I had to have this book in my collection. I went to work and started reading it on my break. By the time I got in bed that night I was finished this book. Man the book was great. It had me lauhging, crying, mad, shocked,,, all the above. I knew from then on I would be reading alot more of this guy. I got this book in 2001... Now 6 years later, I have purchased this book about 6 times. Editorial Review:

E. Lynn Harris's track record as a bestselling novelist began here, with the story of Raymond Tyler, who, after years of questioning his sexual identity, finds himself torn between a married male lover and Nicole, the talented actress with whom he imagines himself able to spend the rest of his life. With a rich cast of supporting characters and emotionally wrenching plot twists, this debut proved popular enough in a self-published edition to catch the attention of Doubleday, which bought the rights to Invisible Life and has published each of Harris's four subsequent novels, including two sequels, Just As I Am and Abide with Me.

Editorial Review:

At the end of Invisible Life, Raymond and Nicole had just ended a blossoming love affair when Nicole found herself unable to cope with Raymond's bisexuality. Just As I Am begins soon after that, as the two former lovers try to rebuild their lives. Raymond has moved to Atlanta to practice law, and he continues to question whether he's genuinely bisexual or really gay, but is unable to accept that a real lifetime love might happen with anyone but a wife. (The reappearance of charismatic--and closeted--pro football player Basil Henderson doesn't exactly make things easier for him.) Nicole has agreed to marry her rich, white lover, who's bankrolling her latest Broadway effort, even though she's not sure she loves him. She and Raymond are reunited when their mutual best friend, Kyle, succumbs to his HIV infection and Raymond returns to New York City to be by his side. Over the years, E. Lynn Harris has proved himself a powerful male counterpart to the commercial success of African American authors like Terry McMillan; the turbulent plot of Just As I Am, with its relentless focus on characters' feelings, ably demonstrates how he's become so popular.

Editorial Review:

Simmering with passion, betrayal, and a woman's contempt, Lee Hayes delivers a fiery sequel to Passion Marks in A Deeper Blue.

Intense from beginning, A Deeper Blue hypnotizes readers into a story of lust and love. Kevin Davis finds his tumultuous relationship with his lover Daryl Harris in serious jeopardy. Pulled in different directions, Daryl must choose between the lover he's dreamed about and a new temptation; both of whom have female lovers -- past and present -- who are angry about being betrayed.

Cerina Ford is a woman desperately and whole-heartedly in love with Temple Moore. They share a passionate physical relationship, yet Cerina really desires an emotional connection with Temple -- a connection he is not willing to give. Eventually Cerina discovers Temple has fallen in love with Daryl and her obsession plummets out of control.

Meanwhile, Kevin realizes that he can run, but there is nowhere to hide from a scorned lover. "Kevin finds himself a target of a forgotten lover, who tracks him down from thousands of miles away, and will stop at nothing to ensure total destruction of his life."

With gripping detail, A Deeper Blue intertwines love, hate, jealousy, infidelity, revenge, and ultimately, murder. Author Lee Hayes shows that th eline between love and hate is a thin one -- and that sins from the past can evolve into nightmares of the present.

Editorial Review:

What if Jesus knew how it feels to be queer? Surprising answers come in Jesus in Love, a novel that re-imagines Christ's legendary life as an erotic, mystical adventure in first-century Palestine. Jesus has today's queer sensibilities and psychological sophistication as he lives out his mythic story. Readers can relate to the struggles he faces: He feels like his real self is both male and female. He falls in love with people of both sexes. Society doesn't understand him. Jesus, the narrator, speaks in an engaging, up-to-date tone as he reveals his intimate relationships with John the beloved disciple (a gay man mourning his lover's death), Mary Magdalene (a highly intelligent survivor of sexual abuse) and the multi-gendered Holy Spirit. The novel shows how Jesus grows over a one-year period-from his decision to get baptized until the day he sends his friends away to teach others. Ultimately he leads disciples of both sexes to a place where sexuality and spirituality are one. Jesus in Love frees the reader to imagine and experience Christ in new ways.

Editorial Review:

One of the guilty pleasures of the reading world, E. Lynn Harris's novels are filled with gorgeous, glamorous, A-list African-Americans who will do whatever it takes to get their way. You don't want to know anyone in a Harris novel. The talented Yancey Braxton, who was left at the altar in the previous book in this series (Not a Day Goes By), moves from New York to L.A. with hopes of transforming her theatrical success into a bigtime musical career. And if her first pop single happens to expose her bisexual ex-fiancé Basil Henderson to ridicule, so much the better. Basil himself claims to be looking for the mother of his children--a good woman, in other words--while continuing his nonstop sexual conquests on both sides of the fence. He meets his match in Bart Dunbar, a hunky gay man with a mean streak the length of the Mississippi. When Basil dismisses Bart after a couple nights of steamy sex, Bart finds a way to make himself memorable. The best-written and most wicked of Harris's novels, Any Way the Wind Blows will keep you up all night turning pages and being grateful for a quiet life. --Regina Marler

Loved, loved, LOVED this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My only question is, why on earth is it out of print?? I am an avid reader and try to read most African American lesbian-oriented fiction that I can get my hands on. The sad thing is, there isn't much out there, and of that that is, there isn't alot that's good...or true. What's wonderful about this book is that it's both. It's great writing---strong plot, great character development and tight storyline. But more importantly, its TRUE. I could relate to every part of this story---both those that I've lived and those I've only heard about. And my partner and every friend I've told to read this book have all said the same. Please get this book back into print and then, Ms. Rose, please pick up your pen and let us know what happenend next! We're waiting with baited breath!!!

Editorial Review:

A talented sculptor becomes the centerpiece of a love triangle with the man of her dreams, and the woman destined to become her reality. In Water in a Broken Glass, Odessa Rose paints a landscape where identities sculpted by art and narrow boundaries are put to the test of life and all of its possibilities.

Tour de Force about Renaissance Festivals and Romance 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Ryna Tully is a "Road Rennie," one of the talented folks who entertain at Renaissance Festivals, and she's been doing it all her life. She has red hair, is literally and figuratively hot-headed, and is still hurting from a breakup with Liam, a dashing character from the Village Militia. Ryna isn't looking forward to running into Liam over the next seven weeks at the Pendragon Festival, and she is in a foul mood at the beginning of the book.

Bea Saunders' brother Daniel has finally talked her into assuming a role at the Ren-Fest. The kind-hearted Bea becomes Phoenix, an exceedingly cranky old herb-witch who, over the course of the book, develops a suitably caustic and funny way of dealing with the Festival patrons. Liam sets his sights on Bea, and she is flattered, but as the story goes on, it's not Liam she becomes emotionally entangled with but Ryna.

So, at heart, this novel is a romance, but it is also oh-so-much-more. The book is immense, and every page is packed full of colorful characters, the hustle-bustle of the crowds, and all the wit and humor found at a Renaissance Festival. Seen mostly through Ryna's and Bea's different perspectives (with some flashbacks to the 1500s), the story unfolds at a pace in keeping with the best stories of old. I am reminded of all the interconnectedness of an Austen novel, the breadth and scope of Dickens' work, and the wit of The Canterbury Tales.

Ultimately, Ryna and Bea's relationship is central, but there are so many sub-plots running throughout the novel that many of characters become dear to the reader's heart (mine being the gender-reversed Robyn Hood & The Merry Maids who count one lone male, Lord Marion, as a member. They get into a lot of funny scrapes.)

The book truly is a tour-de-force about the Renaissance Faire traditions. From the Ashes contains a wonderful mixture of the Gypsy, Irish, Italian, and English characters we associate with the Olde World: Knights, Lords, and Ladies, peasants and witches, fairies and rogues, minstrels, fortunetellers, a little bit of Magick, and Harvey, the Privy Monster. To keep us on track, the author has provided a glossary of the peculiar lingo that the Rennies use as well as a character listing.

If you enjoy Ren-Fests, King Arthur, Robin Hood, or stories about Merry Olde England, or if you ever wanted to be a part of a benevolent group working toward an entertaining and rollicking common cause, this book's for you. I highly recommend it.

~Lori L. Lake...

Editorial Review:

An urban fantasy tale of two women who overcome heartbreak, history, and the Shadow Fae to find happiness, themselves, and each other against the Magickal backdrop of Pendragon Renaissance Faire.

I thing this novel poses the interesting question: Is it better to do the right thing for the wrong reason, or is it better to do nothing at all? I very much enjoyed the book and have kept it in my library for rereading.

Pompous & Boring 2 out of 5 stars.

I did not like this book at all. Granted that the author comes from a social class I do not like, but his writing fails to appeal to me when other books on upper classes do appeal to me.

Editorial Review:

British writer Angus Wilson achieved fame in the late 1940s for two collections of short fiction. It was, however, the publication of Hemlock and After in 1953 that transformed him from an admired up-and-coming author to a scandalous novelist. A witty and scathing look at English literary life, Wilson's novel details the life of Bernard Sands, a noted homosexual English novelist who discovers that neither his fame nor his closet is very secure. Wilson was one of the first to write honestly and openly about gay life in post-war England, and Hemlock and After remains a classic of psychological insight and social satire.

Editorial Review:

Meet the tourists, former classmates at Yale who, seven years later, must confront the people they've become while forging lives in Manhattan. David, a hedge fund wunderkind who forfeited idealism for wealth, hopes that a more fulfilling life lies ahead in the suburbs. His wife, the beautiful Samona, to whom David returns home nightly with nothing left for her, wonders whether her marriage is stripping away her best years. Ethan, a successful furniture designer with a magnetic sexuality, seeks something darker and more uncertain than the power lunches, needy family, and unsatisfying relationships that comprise his life. Rounding out the group is the story's unnamed narrator, a freelance reporter struggling to stay afloat -- financially, professionally, and emotionally -- who shares complicated histories with each of them.

When Ethan and Samona have a chance encounter at a gallery opening, they meet each other's needs. As our narrator traverses the city and gradually reconstructs the events that underlie the present circumstances, his own mysterious role comes into ever sharper focus. Only later, after David commissions Ethan to design some conference rooms at his firm and a secret triangle is formed, does our narrator begin to tie all the pieces together.

With The Tourists, Jeff Hobbs delivers a striking and stylish debut about the dark and sometimes destructive aspects of physical attraction and love, marital disillusionment, and the inevitable disappointments life can bring.
