Editorial Review:

Are the "culture wars" over? When did they begin? What is their relationship to gender struggle and the dynamics of class? In her first full treatment of postcolonial studies, a field that she helped define, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, one of the world's foremost literary theorists, poses these questions from within the postcolonial enclave.

"We cannot merely continue to act out the part of Caliban," Spivak writes; and her book is an attempt to understand and describe a more responsible role for the postcolonial critic. A Critique of Postcolonial Reason tracks the figure of the "native informant" through various cultural practices--philosophy, history, literature--to suggest that it emerges as the metropolitan hybrid. The book addresses feminists, philosophers, critics, and interventionist intellectuals, as they unite and divide. It ranges from Kant's analytic of the sublime to child labor in Bangladesh. Throughout, the notion of a Third World interloper as the pure victim of a colonialist oppressor emerges as sharply suspect: the mud we sling at certain seemingly overbearing ancestors such as Marx and Kant may be the very ground we stand on.

A major critical work, Spivak's book redefines and repositions the postcolonial critic, leading her through transnational cultural studies into considerations of globality.

Gem from a brilliant thinker. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book will forever redefine feminism for its readers.

There are two threads: one political, the other literary commentary. Fortunately, Witting pulls the former into the latter. The astute and radical political critique in Wittig's book is uniquely powerful.

Wittig addresses the question of how a movement is comprised of both group energy and individual experience. The theory, legacy, and limits of Marx and Engels are discussed.

Then, drawing on de Beauvoir and other iconoclasts, Wittig addresses our dominator culture in a way that goes directly to its core.

Wittig deals efficiently yet persuasively with the argument over whether nature or culture is responsible for inequality, declaring that "there is no sex." This statement becomes the book's alpha and omega, and the lens through which Wittig shows us history, literature, and the future of activism.

Like whiteness, maleness is a social category that can be renounced. Man (Homo) once meant everybody in the human community -- it was indeed generic, in the unifying sense. Unfortunately, the word has so frequently been used to describe a socially constructed group that expels half of itself in order to oppress it, "man" is now identified with those identified as male.

In the essay "The Category of Sex" Wittig writes:

"The perenniality of the sexes and the perenniality of slaves and masters proceed from the same belief, and, as there are no slaves without masters, there are no women without men. The ideology of sexual difference functions as censorship in our culture by masking, on the grounds of nature, the social opposition between man and women. Masculine/feminine, male/female are the categories which serve to conceal the fact that social differences always belong to an economic, political, ideological order. ...The masters explain and justify the established divisions as a result of natural differences."

I understand that Wittig has recently passed away. If only I had discovered this book a little earlier, so that I could have met the author. That feeling, I suppose, is the sign of a truly good read. "A text by a minority author is only successful if it succeeds in making the minority point of view unviersal" writes Wittig --and to read this book from beginning to end is to find that the author has done just that.

Editorial Review:

These political, philosophical, and literary essays mark the first collection of theoretical writing from the acclaimed novelist and French feminist writer Monique Wittig.

foundational text 5 out of 5 stars.

No need for superlatives here- Minh-Ha's work speaks for itself. Beautifully written in her unique style, this particular text will change the way you think about history, memory, women's work, postcolonialism and diaspora. Does not read like a 'theory' book but is absolutely foundational.

Woman, Native, Other... What? 1 out of 5 stars.

This "book" is quite possibly the most nonsensical, self-indulgent collection of phrases I've ever encountered. If I weren't assigned this in class, and perhaps despite that fact, I would have thought it was a publisher's joke. And not the funny kind, the "see what kind of drivel we can put out when we panderingly label it 'academic' and 'post-modern' kind." This book made me lose faith in publishing, academia, anthropology, and film studies, so I guess it succeeded in something.

A Must For Any Feminist Scholar 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of those books which i purchased for a class yet intend to keep well after the class is over. It's full of articles on a broad range of topics by a diverse group of writers and I often find myself flipping through it and reading articles which haven't been assigned for class - a sure sign that the book is a "keeper".

Editorial Review:

In the landmark 1991 edition of Feminisms, Robyn Warhol and Diane Price Herndl assembled the most comprehensive collection of American and British feminist literary criticism ever published. In this revised edition, the editors have updated the volume, in keeping with the expanding parameters of feminist literary discourse. With the inclusion of more than two dozen new essays, along with a major reorganization of the sections in which they appear, Warhol and Price Herndl have again established the measure for representing the latest developments in the field of feminist literary theory. Believing that the feminist movement can only move forward "where difference commands attention, not dismissal or negativism," they have continued the original collection's mission of providing a multiplicity of perspectives and approaches. This revised edition contains three new sections ("Conflict," "Gaze," and "Practice") and includes more selections by and about women of color and lesbians.

A great feminist reader 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful collection of essays for anyone looking for an introduction to feminist theory, or simply for new ways to perceive and analyze the body. The bitesize samples of Judith Butler, Catharine MacKinnon, Audre Lorde, and bell hooks challenge the reader to confront contemporary issues such as rape, gender, and representations of women of color in ways that are radically different from mainstream thought.

Editorial Review:

In many fields, the body is the topic generating exciting new research and interdisciplinary inquiry. Feminist theorists, in particular, have focused on the female body as the site where representations of difference and identity are inscribed. Drawn from a broad range of disciplines, explores the tensions between women's lived bodily experiences and the cultural meanings inscribed on the female body. The volume includes classic and contemporary essays on rape, pornography, eroticism, anorexia, body building, menstruation, and maternity, and challenges racial, class, and sexual categories. Complemented by the editor's introduction, is a comprehensive sourcebook on the major theoretical positions and critical trends surrounding the female body.

Essential theory 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Teresa de Lauretis is possibly _the_ most quoted gender theorist after Foucault. Arguments in this book have been taken up by the likes of Judith Butler, Michael Warner, and Judith Halberstam.

Editorial Review:

This collection of essays examines the feminist perspective in relation to specific works of literature, criticism and film. In some of the essays the author looks at a novel or film through theory, taking a particular issue or assumption in theoretical discourse as a magnifying glass in order to refocus the reading around questions of gender representation. In other works, the reading of a fictional, cinematic or critical text provides the occasion to articulate a theoretical problem or to engage in a current criticial debate about feminism and the limitations of "sexual difference". Her book is aimed at every feminist in need of theoretical ammunition and for every theorist in need of feminist enlightenment. Teresa de Lauretis is the author of other feminist studies including "Alice Doesn't: Feminism, Semiotics, Cinema" and is the editor of "Feminist Studies/Criticial Studies".

Editorial Review:

In this classic work, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, one of the leading and most influential cultural theorists working today, analyzes the relationship between language, women and culture in both Western and non-Western contexts.

Spivak here develops an original integration of powerful contemporary methodologies - deconstruction, Marxism and feminism - turning this new model on major debates in the study of literature and culture. In Other Worlds considers questions of theory across a broad spectrum (what, for example, does "pluralism" mean?) while also engaging in ongoing debates with other leading figures of contemporary criticism: political philosophers such as Habermas and Althusser, psychoanalysts such as Julia Kristeva, legal theorists such as Ronald Dworkin, literary and social critics including Edward Said, Wayne Booth, Donald Davie, Helene Cixous and Jean-Joseph Goux. Spivak's work also explores the literary text: Dante, Yeats, Wordsworth and Coleridge, Virginia Woolf, Margaret Drabble and the Indian writer Mahasweta Devi.

Editorial Review:

Is there a distinctive women's tradition in literature? Do women write differently from men? What does it mean to define a piece of writing as "feminist"? Do women encounter particular problems in becoming writers? These are among the many questions addressed, debated and illuminated in this new edition of Mary Eagleton's classic Reader in feminist literary theory. Radically revised and expanded from its original format, this second edition retains all the features that have made it indispensable to students and teachers of feminist literary theory across the world for a decade. The range of the collection remains unmatched by any similar volume, providing a superb point of entry into one of the broadest and most vibrant areas of contemporary theory. New material has been introduced throughout the Reader, reflecting, in particular: the growing diversity of Black feminism, the continuing influence of "French feminism" and the fundamental impact of postmodernism on feminism. New emphases have been introduced in every section, and a chapter covering postmodernist theories of subjectivity has been added. Fully indexed to make cross-referencing simple, this new edition is the perfect introduction to feminist literary theory today.

Editorial Review:

In this bold contribution to contemporary feminist theory, Sonia Saldívar-Hull argues for a feminism that transcends national borders and ethnic identities. Grounding her work in an analysis of the novels and short stories of three Chicana writers--Gloria Anzaldúa, Sandra Cisneros, and Helena María Viramontes--Saldívar-Hull examines a range of Chicana feminist writing from several disciplines, which she collects under the term "feminism on the border." By comparing and defining literary and national borders, she presents the voices of these and other Chicana writers in order to show their connection to feminist literature and to women of color in the United States. This book provides one of the most comprehensive accounts of Chicana feminist writing available.
Saldívar-Hull draws on contemporary literary and post-colonial theory, as well as her own autobiography, or testimonio, to help her define "feminism on the border." Successfully uniting theory with lived social experience, she delineates many of the internal processes that must be acknowledged in order to access larger transnational and geopolitical literary movements. This book thus joins a body of scholarship within feminist theory, working at the intersection of identity politics and political praxis. Saldívar-Hull's close readings of Chicana literary texts are informed by a comparative and cross-cultural perspective that enables her to forge links to a geopolitical feminist literary movement that unites ethnic identity to global solidarity.

Written for readers with little knowledge of the subject, Sexual/Textual Politics nevertheless makes its own intervention into key debates, arguing provocatively for a commitedly political and theoretical criticism as against merely textual or apolitical approaches.
