Editorial Review:

Khlebnikov, who died in 1922 at the age of thirty-six, is one of the great, untranslated Russian poets of this century. Hailed by his contemporaries and by later writers and scholars as the creative genius behind the Russian Futurist movement, Khlebnikov is famous more for his inaccessibility than for the excellence of what he actually produced. Even Russians are generally baffled by him.
Now, in a powerful American rendition, we are given access to the strange and beautiful world of Khlebnikos "the word's wild highwayman." Trained in the natural sciences and mathematics and by temperament an artist, Khlebnikov thought he had discovered the Laws of Time and Tables of Destiny, by which enlightened humans could live in harmony with themselves and with nature. He coined the terms "Futurian" and "Presidents of Planet Earth" for himself and his friends, and he devoted all of his short, restless life to finding a language appropriate to his vision. Experiments with words became magical paths to a reinvigorated future, and produced some of the most extraordinary poems in the Russian language.
These goals and researches were variously embodied as well in stories, plays, and visionary essays in which Khlebnikovadvances architectural plans for mobile cities, a new alphabet based on universal meanings of sounds, and communication by way of vast television networks. The result is poetry of startling originality, modernity, and linguistic virtuosity--a true challenge to translators and one that has been met brilliantly here by Schmidt and Douglas. The King of Timeis a representative sampling of Khlebnikov's writings, taken from the translation of his complete works now in preparation under the auspices of the Dia Art Foundation. It includes many pieces, among them the full text of the astounding poem-play Zangezi, never before translated. General readers will be introduced to the legendary Khlebnikov, and cognoscenti will applaud the inventiveness of the rendering.
Paul Schmidt, translator of Rimbaud and Mayakovsky among others, and Charlotte Douglas, an art historian who specializes in the Russian avant-garde, are Director and Senior Research Scholar, Khlehnikov Translation Project, Dia Art Foundation.

Terrific versions of some great Russian poems 5 out of 5 stars.

Very good translations of the great, hard-to-translate Russian poet. The six long poems that comprise the collection, On a Red Steed, Poem of the Mountain, An Attempt at a Room, Poem of the End, New Year's Greetings, and Poem of the Air, retain the compressed power of Tsvetaeva's short poems. Tsvetaeva's tormented spirit shines through. There is also good selection of Tsvetaeva's short poems in the back. A must read for all who love modern Russian poetry.

see Andrey Kneller's book "My Poems" for good translations of M. Tsvetaeva that stay true to the original poems.

Editorial Review:

Distinguished by James E. Falen’s masterful use of contemporary American English and handling of rhyme and meter, this new translation of Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel ably provides English readers with the chance to experience the work of the poet Russians regard as the fountainhead of their literature.

The introduction includes Falen’s discussion of how his translation compares with those of his predecessors and a general analysis of the poem. Nearly one hundred notes annotate the text.

Editorial Review:

Poetry: a gift of place, mood and vision for a cold wet night, from Russian Hill, San Francisco -- "The poems start by looking outward, but as they are read the listener is taken deeper into Russian Hill's tiny byways, its history, its rumbling and grumbling cable car tracks and, ultimately, deep into the poet's mind. 'The view outward opens each mind to itself, then the hill becomes an ark of inward exploration,' Blotnick says." Sandra Ann Harris, San Francisco Chronicle

Akhmatova is an extremely interesting woman, totally devoted to her country and her poetry - and for me this book also gave me a history lesson for that time period in Russian history.

Editorial Review:

This powerful collection of fifteen memoirs by and about one of the greatest poets of our time weaves an unforgettable drama of friendship, grace, and courage, through long years of heartbreak and hunger.

Shel-Silverstein-esque poems, great illustrations! 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a mystery to me how the translators did such a wonderful job with the rhyme and yet managed to keep the content of these poems, but apparently they did - to great effect! This is a fun and silly book of fun and silly poems with fantastic illustrations.

Long-awaited "backward" translation 5 out of 5 stars.

"Silly Horse" was a book of my childhood, and I hope it'll be such for my children too. It's author, Vadim Levin, wrote it in Russian following the style of Russian translations of English nursery rhymes. They match 100%, so it's only fair that they have now been translated to English too. The pictures are also wonderful. I would recommend owning it together with the original version, of course.

Editorial Review:

Thirty-five years ago this collection of poems caused a wave of enthusiasm in Russia and became a bestseller because of its unusual language style—the Russian poems were written to sound as though they had been translated from British English. Its comical poems fooled thousands of children and their parents with their Russian flavor and British style; many even became popular song lyrics. With this translation into English these quirky poems have come full circle, their British flavor finally appropriate to the language used.

THE POEMS OF DR. ZHIVAGO 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME AS A GIFT A VERY LONG TIME AGO, BACK IN 1975. THE POETRY WAS WONDERFUL AND BEING IN LOVE WITH A VERY SPECIAL PERSON AT THE TIME AND SHARING "THE POEMS OF DR. ZHIVAGO" WITH HIM......MADE ME BELIEVE THIS BOOK WAS MADE FOR "LOVERS"!

Editorial Review:

The 25 poems from Pasternak's masterpiece Doctor Zhivago are followed by a masterful critique of their function in the novel and their value as poetry.

AN EXCELLENT BRIEF LIFE 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Nina Berberova has given us a fleeting sketch of Blok, but it tells us what we really need to know about the great Symbolist poet. It won't satisfy a reader looking for a full-scale scholarly biography but it will tell the general reader everything that they'll need to know about Blok before (hopefully) going on to read one of several fine translations of his poetry.
