Editorial Review:

Le Corbusier Le Grand is an enormous and enormously appealing monograph on one of the greatest and most controversial visionaries of the twentieth century: Le Corbusier (1887-1965). Publisher Phaidon's super-sized volume features thousands of stunning photographs of the seminal architect, his buildings and plans, writings, and related documents (sketchbooks, personal snapshots, even postcards). With the turn of each page, readers can follow Corbusier's trajectory from revolutionary young artist and prolific writer to globe-trotting, celebrity-crusader for modern architecture and urban planning. Esteemed architectural historian and Corbusier expert Jean-Louis Cohen provides an elegant introductory essay to this veritable archive of images. We learn that although the Swiss-born Le Corbusier hailed from a small town in a small country under the modest name Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, he was destined for greatness--largely of his own design. A prime mover behind the International Style (perhaps the first truly global architectural-design language), Corbusier brought modern design principles and their promise of improved living standards to the world stage. Futuristic high rise apartment complexes, office towers, highly functional streamlined interiors and furniture made primarily of industrial materials may all be attributed in part to him and his controversial utopian mission to transform our daily lives into a highly functional and beautiful system. Le Corbusier Le Grand is an extravagant, yet essential tome for libraries, those interested in modernism, city planning, and especially those with a really big coffee table. --Lauren Nemroff

High Quality Introduction to Le Corbusier 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The German Publishing Company, Taschen has recently introduced a series of paperback monographs describing the lives and works of the Twentieth Century's greatest architects. On average, they are 100 pages long and they are filled with numerous detailed photographs of the great architect and his buildings. They start with a ten page introduction to the architects life and then continue to short chapters that highlite their greatest buildings.

Whether you love or hate Le Corbusier, he was one of the great figures of the Twentieth Century. His ideas have helped shape urban life all over the world. If you want to consider yourself minimally knowledgable about modern architecture, you have to know about Le Corbusier. This book is a cheap, beautifully edited introduction to one of the leading lights of modernism. Once again, Taschen Publishing hits a home run.

Editorial Review:

Architectural poetry in the machine age

Born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887-1965) adopted his famous pseudonym after publishing his ideas in the review L’Esprit Nouveau in 1920. The few buildings he was able to design during the 1920s, when he also spent much of his time painting and writing, brought him to the forefront of modern architecture, though it wasn’t until after World War II that his epoch-making buildings were constructed, such as the Unité d’Habitation in Marseilles and the Church of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp.

The definitive statement on Modern Architecture 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

While there have been many monographs of Le Corbusier, this is the definitive edition. It is the set of volumes that inspired everyone from Alvar Aalto to Zaha Hadid, shaping the way we look at Modern Architecture. There is a typo in the number of pages. This set is massive but it doesn't weigh in at 176,000 pages. The 8 volumes, about 200 pages each, were originally released individually from 1929 to 1969 with Boesinger and Stonorov working directly with Le Corbusier. These are the original drawings and photographs, so if you are looking for glossy prints of Corbu's more famous works, I suggest purchasing monographs by Kenneth Frampton or William Curtis, which have contemporary photos of his better known buildings. Also, much of the text is not translated, presented in the original French. You have to have a great appreciation for Corbu's work to consider such a purchase, but given how rare first editions are, not to mention expensive, this is the best price by far for this invaluable collection.

Editorial Review:

Le Corbusier's Modulor l and ll 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The books arrived well packaged and on time. The books however were a little smaller than what I anticipated since the last time I reviewed these same books was at a local library, but nevertheless I was impressed that the books did come in a compacted design. For what better way to show off the design tool called the Modulor by placeing a picture of it on it's very own jacket that comes with the books. You feel as if the whole box set is some sort of handy carpenters tape measure to carry 'round with you.The inside of the book is full of explanatory remarks about perfecting, creating and applying this human scale ruler which incorporates the practical use of what is termed the Golden Section and thereby adhereing it to his/your own building designs. For those of you who are avid Golden Ratio/Section seekers these two books are a great gift idea and a great collectors item. The books also include many letters too from his colleagues who critique and sometimes try to disprove his modular idea, that it really works.I have included pictures to show you the overall appearance of both books and its smart jacket design. Therefore I say an excellant choice and would recommend to college students, Architects, and all those versed in the Arts in general

Editorial Review:

In the years 1942 to 1948, Le Corbusier developed a system of measurements which became known as "Modulor". Based on the Golden Section and Fibonacci numbers and also using the physical dimensions of the average human, Modulor is a sequence of measurements which Le Corbusier used to achieve harmony in his architectural compositions. Le Modulor was published in 1950 and after meeting with success, Le Corbusier went on to publish Modulor 2 in 1955. In many of Le Corbusier's most notable buildings, including the Chapel at Ronchamp and the Unité d'habitation, evidence of his Modulor system can be seen. These two volumes form an important and integral part of Le Corbusier's theoretical writings.

Editorial Review:

Le Corbusier is probably the most famous and certainly the most controversial architect of the twentieth century. His impact on the urban fabric around us and on the way we live has been gigantic because of the richness and variety of his work and his passionately expressed philosophy of architecture. Weaving through his long and prolific life are certain recurrent themes—his perennial drive toward new types of dwelling, from the early white villas to the Unité d'Habitation at Marseille; his evolving concepts of urban form, including the Plan Voisin of 1925 with its cruciform towers imposed on the city of Paris and his work at Chandigarh in India; and his belief in a new technocratic order. The distinguished critic and historian Kenneth Frampton reexamines all these facets of his artistic and philosophical worldview in the light of recent discoveries, and presents us with a Le Corbusier for the twenty-first century. 200 b/w illustrations.

Editorial Review:

"This is the kind of book I have been waiting for, I think, for the better part of my life. Nothing is more frustrating to architecture buffs than to travel across the continent to see a celebrated building and then, since scholarly histories never deign to offer practical information, not to be able to find it....[With] Deborah Gans' superb book, life [is] vastly easier. Her excellent text is detailed...[and] contains excellent maps and photographs." —Paul Goldberger, New York Times A picture may be worth a thousand words, but there's no real substitute for personal experience. Anyone who's visited the architecture of Le Corbusier knows just how true this is. Our indispensable The Le Corbusier Guide, first published in 1987 and now in its third edition, will help you do just that. This architectural handbook tells you everything you need to know to get to Le Corbusier's extant buildings in Europe, Japan, Russia, Africa, India, and North and South America, and includes updated maps, directions, and visitor information.

Good subject matter, even better narrative 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Although an interesting subject matter, the author does an amazing job using the narrative of the thinkers lives to cooincide with their belief system, the only problem is he probably could have done it in about 50 pages less, but overall its a good fast read

Editorial Review:

As Robert Fishman writes of three of urban planning's greatest visionaries, Ebenezer Howard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, they 'hated the cities of their time with an overwhelming passion. The metropolis was the counter-image of their ideal cities, the hell that inspired their heavens.'

Editorial Review:

One of the key figures in 20th-century architecture, Le Corbusier had an impact that is still potent today. Whether admirers are making a pilgrimage to his intimate, evocative chapel at Ronchamps, or urban planners are reviling his monolithic apartment blocks as inhuman and unlivable, Le Corbu still has the power to inspire and polarize the architecture and urban-planning world. This richly illustrated monograph, based on the first major Le Corbusier retrospective in more than 20 years, presents an overview of his work, including not only architectural projects, interior design and furniture, but also paintings, textiles, sculpture, drawings, and books.

Full of new discoveries and perspectives for longtime followers of Le Corbusier's work, this book is based on a rich trove of previously unpublished material, and on the latest research. Essays by well-known Le Corbusier experts examine aspects of his work, including the relationship between sculpture and architecture, his work as an interior designer, his fascination with new media and the technical object, and his lifelong interest in Asia. A comprehensive introduction to the work and influences of the architect of the century, a title that he fully deserves. With texts by Stanislaus von Moos, Jean-Louis Cohen, Arthur Ruegg, Beatriz Colomina, Mateo Kries, and others.

Editorial Review:

Le Corbusier, the brilliant architect of the 20th century, always carried along a sketchbook, a kind of diary in which, observing the "grand tour" tradition and the "fads" of famous 19th-century travellers, he amassed observations, calculations, drawings of works and designs, and carefully jotted down his meetings, experiences and reflections. The notebooks forming the "Voyages d'Orient" published in partnership with the Fondation Le Corbusier were archived under this name by the architect himself and only rediscovered in 1994. They follow the architect's 1911 travels to the Balkans, Istanbul, Prague, Bucharest, Greece, all the way to Italy, Brindisi, Naples and Rome, until they mysteriously break off in Florence. "Orient" here is the broad term that refers to the first classicism, and for Le Corbusier, approaching antiquity meant coming into contact with the clearly defined forms of Greek temples, of Islamic Istanbul, of the Roman city, seeking the point where modernism and classicism meet. The edition features a detailed transcription of the master's autograph texts. The introductory notes, by Giuliano Gresleri, offer a significant opportunity to become acquainted with one of the greatest architects of the Modern Movement.

Editorial Review:

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, otherwise known as the Swiss architect Le Corbusier, is famous for proclaiming "the house is a machine for living in". This neat comparison of 106 of his designs for houses edited by Tadao Ando Laboratory (with model, as well as plan and side views), each house to one spread, sets Le Corbusier’s experiments in perspective. Two essays discuss the theory behind his designs and what they reveal about the man himself. A thick paper dust jacket is included.
