Let there be light 5 out of 5 stars.

IT Strategy studies and deployment of solutions was my area of interest during the last decade. In most cases, especially while dealing with businesses that are geographically dispersed, connectivity has played a key role in deciding on the solution set. Trade off between centralized vs. de-centralized structures, TCO, maintainability and application response times on WAN have been crucial factors in decision making. Going by Eliyahu Goldratt's "Theory of Constraints", it is not difficult to guess that bandwidth availability and costs have dictated the boundaries of IT architectures. The "Last Mile Problem" used to sound like the last post. Not anymore, even in developing countries if Telecosm becomes a global reality. With abundance of cheap bandwidth we are entering a new era in IT Solutions. If Microcosm could pack computing power far exceeding the power of legacy mainframes on the PC sitting on our desks, Telecosm is about distributing this power from the center of the network to the peripheral devices. The ethernet card connecting the "teleputer" dissolves into the World Wide Web; World Wide Wait is eliminated by World Wide Waves. "The Network is the Computer".

Microcosm has multiplied Computing power and Storage and divided costs by million folds. Connectivity between these massive and powerful systems has not kept pace during this phase. Better late than never, enter Telecosm. Fiber and Satellites using light and electromagnetic waves transfer information across the globe at Petabit rates. This paradigm shift in communications is bound to have profound effects on business and society. We will soon be wasting bandwidth as we are now wasting transistors on our processors. Gilder narrates this phenomenon very well.

After reading the first 3 chapters of the book, I decided to revisit my college books on Quantum Physics- Planck's Constant, Wave Theory, Speed of light, Schroedinger's equation come in handy to really appreciate the power of Telecosm. For ready reference the book provides an excellent glossary of all technical terms that help have a quick recap. I would appreciate if the next edition contains detailed notes on concepts like WDM, CDMA and Packet Switching in the appendix.

The future looks so bright that I foresee a global scarcity of sunglasses! But we still have a problem on hand- the limitation imposed by the speed of light. But if God created light, we need to urge with him to create something that is faster. That will need different lines of communication not discussed in this book. Till then, let there be light!

Editorial Review:

The guru of high technology and a man whose "slightest utterance can move stocks" (The Wall Street Journal) presents a clear, cogent vision of the future of telecommunications; what it will mean in our everyday lives; and how savvy investors can get on the bandwagon today.

With his books (including the groundbreaking Microcosm), top-selling newsletter, testimony before Congress, and annual Telecosm conferences, George Gilder has become the premier prophet of bandwidth and connectivity. In this revised version of Telecosm, Gilder takes technology buffs and investors on a mind-bending tour inside the worldwide webs of glass and light, explaining how fiber optics and wireless breakthroughs are pushing new technologies and new companies to the fore.

Not Quite Everything You Need to Know, but Almost 5 out of 5 stars.

There are four major parts to this book:
. Looking at the Mac, which talks about the Mac in general from an overview of the operating system to storage systems and printing.
. Getting Productive which walks about common business and personal applications like word processing, databases and spreadsheets.
. Getting Creative, all about graphics, web design and HTML, after all, the Mac is reknown for its capabilities in the graphical area.
. Extending your Reach, reaching out for the internet, for networks and even working with Windows machines. This part also has a chapter 'Switching to the Mac from Windows.'

In a bit over a thousand pages the authors have room to cover nearly every aspect of working with a Mac. This book covers the standard everyday tasks that you're likely to do on a Mac. From here, of course you can go on to more specialized programs if that's where your job lies. For instance in the graphics area, iPhoto, which is supplied with all new Macs is covered. But if you're a graphics professional you probably want some more professional. And the book talks about the professional level packages such as Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop, ACD Systems Canvas, Macromedia FreeHand, Corel Painter, and others. It doesn't cover these in detail, but at least talks enough about them to get you started on deciding which is best for your needs.

This book is, as the title says, the Bible of the Mac. It doesn't contain everything there is to know about the Mac (if it did you couldn't lift it) but it certainly contains enough to get you well started.

Editorial Review:

This CD features more than 600 megabytes of utilities, games, sounds, videoclips, digitized photos, clip art, fonts and demonstrations of commercial software. It also includes selections from several Peachpit books in onscreen Acrobat format including Jargon and Icons for the Masses.

Agile Techiques CAN be used in database development! 4 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Regan Windsor for Reader Views (3/07)

Agile methods have gained momentum in the software development world but have been slow to penetrate the database development world. Scott Ambler describes how this is slowly changing and what database developers can do to embrace and introduce agile methodologies.

"Agile Database Development" describes the current collection of philosophies around agile database development, the challenges and misconceptions around agile methodologies, and what needs to happen to bring the data community up to speed with the software development world.

A large problem that database developers run into when trying to implement agile methods is a direct result of tools are not flexible enough to align with the agile methodologies. There is a need for automated database re-factoring and testing tools that allow developers to embrace JIT modeling and iterative methodologies. This isn't to say that agile methods cannot be currently incorporated - they can - but it often means manual database re-factoring.

The biggest area that database developers can benefit from agile philosophies without requiring a lot of development changes is around documentation and modeling. Increased efficiencies can be gained through the utilization of whiteboard modeling, brainstorming, JIT requirements gathering, and minimizing unnecessary or untimely documentation.

"Agile Database Development" takes a critical look at how database development can benefit from agile methodologies and what needs to happen to fully embrace these concepts. While traditional methods may still play a large part it is important for the database community to understand and evolve its methodologies. The world is moving at the speed of change - it is better to keep up than try to catch up!

Editorial Review:

Data is clearly an important aspect of software-based systems; yet, many agile development teams are struggling to involve data professionals within their projects. The Agile Data (AD) methodology defines a philosophical framework for data-oriented activities within agile projects, defining ways that application developers and data professionals can work together effectively; however, philosophy isn t enough -- you also need proven techniques which support those philosophies. This recording presents techniques for agile database development, including database refactoring, Agile-Model Driven Development (AMDD), Test-Driven Design (TDD), and environment/tool strategies. 2-CD set

Through CD-ROM technology, including high-quality video, still images, sound and text, "Five Windows into Africa" vividly captures the vitality and immediacy of life in contemporary Africa. Guided by the individual experiences of the five authors, this interactive CD-ROM conveys a first-hand sense of discovery and understanding by bringing African peoples and cultures into focus and revealing critical social, political, economic and cultural issues as they directly impact Africans. "Five Windows into Africa" opens a spectacular range of local events from the perspective of the participants, including: a bird dance by an itinerant masquerader in a small community outside Bamako, Mali; the funeral of a Liberian expatriate who died in the United States and whose body is returned to his native land and laid to rest; Muslim Friday prayers in the city of Wa, Ghana; the Lancaster House Constitutional Conference that took place in London in the fall of 1979 at which leaders of white and black Rhodesia negotiated the agreement that led to the creation of Zimbabwe; and life in the city of Lagos, Nigeria, where views of popular culture reveal the dynamic lifestyle that characterizes Africa's most populous city. Designed as a companion to Indiana University Press's widely used textbook, "Africa", edited by Phyllis Martin and Partick O'Meara, "Five Windows into Africa" is an engaging and compelling multimedia tool for exploring important issues, questions and practices of aesthetics, spirituality and power as they affect African individuals and communities everyday. "Five Windows into Africa" provides an exciting and unique experience for the armchair traveller and anyone interested in exploring the complexity of African social and cultural life.
