Editorial Review:

Temperance Brennan, like her creator Kathy Reichs, is a brilliant, sexy forensic anthropologist called on to solve the toughest cases. But for Tempe, the discovery of a young girl's skeleton in Acadia, Canada, is more than just another assignment. Évangéline, Tempe's childhood best friend, was also from Acadia. Named for the character in the Longfellow poem, Évangéline was the most exotic person in Tempe's eight-year-old world. When Évangéline disappeared, Tempe was warned not to search for her, that the girl was "dangerous."

Thirty years later, flooded with memories, Tempe cannot help wondering if this skeleton could be the friend she lost so many years ago. And what is the meaning of the strange skeletal lesions found on the bones of the young girl?

Meanwhile, Tempe's beau, Ryan, investigates a series of cold cases. Three girls dead. Four missing. Could the New Brunswick skeleton be part of the pattern? As Tempe draws on the latest advances in forensic anthropology to penetrate the past, Ryan hunts down a serial predator.

Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild, With a faery, hand in hand... -The Stolen Child, Yeats 5 out of 5 stars.

Since Lily Bard left her home town of Bartley Arkansas after experiencing a life altering and tragic event, she has rarely come back. But her sister is about to be married and Lily is the maid of honor, so sisterly duty takes her there.

Lily makes Christmas plans with her private Detective boyfriend, Jack, after the wedding and back at her home in Shakespeare. But when Jack is assigned an 8 year old unsolved kidnapping case, things suddenly get crazy in Bartley.

I paid an obscene amount of money for this out of print book as I am totally addicted to this series and simply could not wait for the December 2008 re-release. Was it worth that huge pile of clams? You bet; I'd pay it all over again in a heartbeat.

While Lily finally starts to heal with her family and friends and the life that was before she was hurt, we get to watch her relationship with Jack progress. The mystery is a heartbreaking one that had me in an internal battle with myself about turning to the end ahead of time to see whodunit.

For such a small number of pages, Ms. Harris utilizes them to their fullest and provides a well rounded book with maximum entertainment. I am ready for the next one!

Editorial Review:

Ten Big OnesShe's accidentally destroyed a dozen cars. She's a target for every psycho and miscreant this side of the Jersey Turnpike. He mother's convinced she'll end up dead...or worse, without a man. She's Stephanie Plum and she kicks butt for a living (well, she thought it would sound good to put it that way...)

It begins as an innocent trip to the deli-mart, on a quest for nachos. But Stephanie Plum and her partner, Lula, are clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. A robbery leads to an explosion, which leads to the destruction of yet another car. It would be just another day in the life of Stephanie Plum...except that she becomes the target of a gang. And the target of an even scarier, more dangerous force that comes to Trenton. With super bounty hunter Ranger out of town (and Stephanie on the outs with vice cop Morelli), she finds herself alone, with a decision to make: how to protect herself and where to hide while on the hunt for a killer known as the Junkman. There's only one safe place, and it has Ranger's name all over it-if she can find it. And if the Junkman doesn't find her first. With Lula riding shotgun and Grandma Mazur on the loose, Stephanie Plum is racing against the clock in her most suspenseful novel yet. Ten Big Ones is page-turning entertainment and Janet Evanovich is the best there is.  Eleven on TopStephanie Plum is thinking her career as a fugitive apprehension agent has run its course. She’s been shot at, spat at, cussed at, fire-bombed, mooned, and attacked by dogs. Stephanie thinks it’s time for a change. So she quits. She wants something safe and normal. But the kind of trouble she had at the bail bonds office can’t compare to the kind of trouble she finds herself facing now…

Stephanie is stalked by a maniac returned from the grave for the sole purpose of putting her into a burial plot of her own. He’s killed before, and he’ll kill again if given the chance. Caught between staying far away from the bounty hunter business and staying alive, Stephanie reexamines her life and the possibility that being a bounty hunter is the solution rather than the problem. After disturbingly brief careers at the button factory, Kan Klean Dry Cleaners, and Cluck-in-a-Bucket, Stephanie takes an office position in security, working for Ranger, the sexiest, baddest bounty hunter and businessman on two continents. Tempers and temperatures rise as competition ratchets up between the two men in her life—her on-again, off-again boyfriend, tough Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and her boss, Ranger. Can Stephanie Plum take the heat? Can you?
  Twelve SharpFIRST A STRANGER APPEARS
While chasing down the usual cast of miscreants and weirdos, Stephanie discovers that a crazed woman is stalking her.

THEN THE STRANGER REVEALS HER SECRETS
The woman dresses in black, carries a 9mm Glock, and has a bad attitude and a mysterious connection to dark and dangerous Carlos Manoso …street name, Ranger.

NEXT, SOMEBODY DIES
The action turns deadly serious, and Stephanie goes from hunting skips to hunting a murderer.

SOON, THE CHASE IS ON
Ranger needs Stephanie for more reasons than he can say. And now, the two are working together to find a killer, rescue a missing child, and stop a lunatic from raising the body count. When Stephanie Plum and Ranger get too close for comfort, vice cop Joe Morelli (her on-again, off-again boyfriend) steps in. Will the ticking clock stop at the stroke of twelve…or will a stranger in the wind find a way to stop Stephanie Plum…forever?

Editorial Review:

Cranky but lovable sleuth Agatha Raisin’s detective agency has become so successful that she wants nothing more than to take quality time for rest and relaxation. But as soon as she begins closing the agency on weekends, she remembers that when she has plenty of quality time, she doesn’t know what to do with it. So it doesn’t take much for the vicar of a nearby village to persuade her to help publicize the church fete---especially when the fair’s organizer, George Selby, turns out to be a gorgeous widower.

Agatha brings out the crowds for the fete, all right, but there’s more going on than innocent village fun. Several of the offerings in the jam-tasting booth turn out to be poisoned, and the festive family event becomes the scene of two murders.

Along with her young and (much to her dismay) pretty sidekick, Toni, Agatha must uncover the truth behind the jam tampering, keep the church funds safe from theft, and expose the nasty secrets lurking in the village---all while falling for handsome George, who may have secrets of his own.

M C Beaton - Kissing Christmas Goodbye 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

M.C. Beaton, and her star character Agatha Raisin, never fails to enthrall and amuse. This one, again was a good relaxing treat, with enough mystery to keep you on your toes. I buy my hard back copies of her work from Amazon, because they have an earlier release date than the UK.

Agatha Raisin is so likeable! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just love the Agatha Raisin books; they are perfect for reading in a night or so, curled up and ready to get into a good story.

What I think I like best about these books are the characters. They're flawed and very likeable, *because* they're flawed! Agatha's tough and obviously gets on better with guys than girls as most of her good friends are guys but under the toughness she's vulnerable and scared about growing old...like me!!

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Agatha Raisin is bored. Her detective agency in the Cotswolds is thriving, but she’ll scream if she has to deal with another missing cat or dog. Only two things seem to offer potential excitement: Christmas, and her ex, James Lacey. This year Agatha’s sure that if she invites James to a splendid Christmas dinner, their love will rekindle like a warm Yule log…but that fantasy will have to wait for now. A wealthy widow—who sent Agatha a letter before her death saying one of her family intended to kill her—has been found dead. Now Agatha must set out to find the murderer, even though, in her heart, she’s still dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones she and James used to know….

New Cozy Series, Shows Promise 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Murder is Binding is a great start to a new cozy series about a town in New England that seeks to resurrect itself by creating a quaint street full of bookshops of all types, with the hope of attracting tourists. This first book is about a murder or two that involve the owners of a mystery bookstore and a cookbook store. You meet up with the usual cast of "normal characters", quirky characters, sinister characters, possibly guilty characters and a couple of bodies.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series. The book is well written, the central idea of the series offers promise and the characters are fun. The only drawback to this first book is that the murderer and final salvo are easily discernable early in the book. The author drops some not-so-subtle hints that make the solution-guessing process too easy for the reader. However, the storyline, the sharp writing and series idea shows much promise.

Editorial Review:

The streets of Stoneham, New Hampsire are lined with bookstores...and paved with murder.

When she moved to Stoneham, city slicker Tricia Miles met nothing but friendly faces. And when she opened her mystery bookstore, she met friendly competition. But when she finds Doris Gleason dead in her own cookbook store, killed by a carving knife, the atmosphere seems more cutthroat than cordial. Someone wanted to get their hands on the rare cookbook that Doris had recently purchased-and the locals think that someone is Tricia. To clear her name, Tricia will have to take a page out of one of her own mysteries-and hunt down someone who isn't killing by the book.

Editorial Review:

Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs exploded onto bestseller lists worldwide with her phenomenal debut novel Déjà Dead -- and introduced "[a] brilliant heroine" (Glamour) in league with Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta. Dr. Temperance Brennan, Quebec's director of forensic anthropology, now returns in a thrilling new investigation into the secrets of the dead.

In the bitter cold of a Montreal winter, Tempe Brennan is digging for a corpse buried more than a century ago. Although Tempe thrives on such enigmas from the past, it's a chain of contemporary deaths and disappearances that has seized her attention -- and she alone is ideally placed to make a chilling connection among the seemingly unrelated events. At the crime scene, at the morgue, and in the lab, Tempe probes a mystery that sweeps from a deadly Quebec fire to startling discoveries in the Carolinas, and culminates in Montreal with a terrifying showdown -- a nerve-shattering test of both her forensic expertise and her skills for survival.

Editorial Review:

`Tis the season for trimming the tree, caroling, baking cookies, and curling up by the Yuletide waiting for Santa to drop down the chimney. But in this festive collection of holiday whodunits, murder is also paying a visit...

"Candy Cane Murder" by Joanne Fluke

Bakery owner Hannah Swensen feels a little stuffed in her elf costume--but it's too late to count calories. Lake Eden's annual Christmas gala is upon her and eager children are waiting. Wayne Bergstrom, owner of Bergstrom's Department Store, happily ho-ho-hos his way through the festivities in his Santa suit. But when a trail of candy canes leads to his corpse in a snow bank, Hannah must find Kris Kringle's killer.

"The Dangers of Candy Canes" by Laura Levine

When a wealthy suburbanite takes a lethal tumble off his roof while installing a giant candy cane, the roofing contractor being held responsible for murder asks freelance writer Jaine Austen to investigate. But solving this untimely holiday death means delving into the cutthroat Christmas decorating wars among scheming neighbors with dirty secrets in their stocking. It takes a fruitcake hiding a weapon and a stunning confrontation to expose the mastermind of this holiday murder.

"Candy Canes of Christmas Past" by Leslie Meier

Twenty-some years ago, Lucy Stone arrived in Tinker Cove, Maine, and discovered her knack for solving mysteries when she met Miss Tilly, the town librarian, whose mother took a fatal fall down the basement stairs one Christmas Eve. The "accident" left a cloud of suspicion on Miss Tilly's father and a slew of other suspects. The only clue was a glass candy cane found smashed to bits by the victim's body. Now Lucy must learn the mystery of the glass candy cane as she unlocks the doors of Christmas past, exposing secrets, scandal, and a killer who got away with murder.

Whether a gift for yourself or that special someone on your list, there's no better way to spend the holidays than with these tantalizing mysteries of murder...

Includes over 15 scrumptious holiday recipes!

Santa gets bludgeoned, neighbors knock neighbors off their light-festooned roofs and householders nearly blow themselves into next year cooking Yule dinner in this triple-decker helping of holiday cheer.

Fluke gives her regular sleuth the starring role in the saga of Santa's sad demise. Hannah Swenson finds skinflint department-store magnate Wayne Bergstrom with his neck broken after playing St. Nick at the Lake Eden Inn's gala. Even her boyfriend, Detective Mike Kingston, knows Hannah's going to investigate, although he tells her for the record to leave it to the professionals. Levine's Jaine Austen, a freelance writer who can resist anything but temptation, is in a holiday tizzy trying to clear Seymour Fiedler, proud proprietor of "Fiedler on the Roof Roofers," of the charge that he doctored the roofing tiles that led to irascible Garth Janken's untimely demise. And Meier takes Lucy Stone back in time, as Christmas with her grandson Patrick reminds her of her first Christmas in Tinker's Cove. Their house on Red Top Road was a mess, she was pregnant with her second child and her husband Bill tried to fix the pilot light on their cantankerous stove, causing an explosion that burned his arms. When librarian Julia Tilley comes to her rescue, Lucy in return tackles the mysterious death of Miss Tilley's mother.

Like a box of holiday chocolates, this recipe-studded assortment gives all readers a crack at their favorites. -- KIRKUS REVIEWS

I really enjoyed this book. Lily Bard is a really strong character and the book has a good engaging story line.

Loved it!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a huge fan of Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire novels, so I decided to give this a shot. I am so glad I did! The heroine is a strong, complex and fascinating character.

Lily Bard has moved to Shakespeare, Arkansas and made a quiet life for herself. She does her job as a cleaning lady, goes to her martial arts classes and minds her own business. Then, someone in her sleepy little town gets killed....and she gets dragged into the middle of things.

I fell in love with this series and had to rush out to buy the rest of them. It was great to have such a strong female character! I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes mysteries.

Great introduction to a new type of heroine 5 out of 5 stars.

Ms. Harris focuses on developing the main character in this 1st book of the Lily Bard series. Lily Bard is compelling, tough and smart. Even though she had a terrible past, you never feel sorry for her. You admire her strength and her guts. She doesn't think of herself as a victim and just wants to live her life but all that changes when she stumbles onto the body of a local landlord.

The store is well told, detailed and rich. The pacing is steady and well thought out.

I've never lived outside a large suburban city, but Ms. Harris writes with such vivid descriptions, I can almost see the details of everything around the characters.

Excellent read. After reading this 1st book, I went out and hunted down the other four in this series and read them all in a week. I just couldn't put them down. The series is just so good.

This is a must read for anyone who appreciates a solid, well told mystery with a well developed, very self-aware, believable, flawed and fascinating protagonist with a bit of baggage.

Editorial Review:

When cleaning lady Lily Bard discovers the dead body of her nosy landlord, her plan of starting a quiet new life may end in her death.
