Editorial Review:

With each of his #1 New York Times bestsellers, Dean Koontz has displayed an unparalleled ability to entertain and enlighten readers with novels that capture the essence of our times even as they bring us to the edge of our seats. Now he delivers a heart-gripping tour de force he’s been waiting years to write, at once a love story, a thrilling adventure, and a masterwork of suspense that redefines the boundaries of primal fear—and of enduring devotion.

Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she’s a legend for the risks she’ll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy’s heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can’t allow herself to return, Amy’s behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

No one is surprised when Amy risks her life to save Nickie, nor when she takes the female golden into her home. The bond between Amy and Nickie is immediate and uncanny. Even her two other goldens, Fred and Ethel, recognize Nickie as special, a natural alpha. But the instant joy Nickie brings is shadowed by a series of eerie incidents. An ominous stranger. A mysterious home invasion.

And the unmistakable sense that someone is watching Amy’s every move and that, whoever it is, he’s not alone.

Someone has come back to turn Amy into the desperate, hunted creature she’s always been there to save. But now there’s no one to save Amy and those she loves. From its breathtaking opening scene to its shocking climax, The Darkest Evening of the Year is Dean Koontz at his finest, a transcendent thriller certain to have readers turning pages until dawn.

Editorial Review:

One night at Elaine’s, Stone Barrington—back in Manhattan after chasing down the bad guys in the Caribbean—meets Barton Cabot, older brother of his sometime ally, CIA boss Lance Cabot. Barton’s career in army intelligence is even more top secret than his brother’s, but he’s suffering from amnesia following a random act of violence. Amnesia is a dangerous thing in a man whose memory is chockfull of state secrets, so Lance hires Stone to watch Barton’s back. As Stone discovers, Barton is a spy with a rather unusual hobby: building and restoring antique furniture. The genteel world of antiques and coin dealers at first seems a far cry from Stone’s usual underworld of mobsters, murderers, and spies. But Barton also is a man with a past, and one event in particular— in the jungles of Vietnam more than thirty years earlier— is coming back to haunt his present in ways he’d never expected. Stone soon finds out that Barton, and some shady characters of his acquaintance, may be hiding a lot more than just a few forged antiques.

Hot! Hot! Hot! 4 out of 5 stars.

I like all of James Patterson's books, but I am particularly fond of the Women's Murder Club and was excited when it became a series on television. This particular novel was very personal for all of the characters and that is what seemed to draw me in even more.

Patiently waiting for the next one!

Editorial Review:

A terrible fire in a wealthy suburban home leaves a married couple dead and Detective Lindsay Boxer and her partner Rich Conklin searching for clues. And after California's golden boy, Michael Campion has been missing for a month, there finally seems to be a lead in his case--a very devastating lead.

As fire after fire consume couples in wealthy, comfortable homes, Lindsay and the Murder Club must race to find the arsonists responsible and get to the bottom of Michael Campion's disappearance. But suddenly the fires are raging too close to home.

Frightened for her life and torn between two men, Lindsay must find a way to solve the most daunting dilemmas she's ever faced--at work and at home.

Not the Best Alex Cross 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I usually love this series, but this book definitely wasn't one of the best.

Too much of the book was spent focusing on Alex's new girlfriend, Wonder Woman. By the end, I was hoping one of the bad guys would throw her off a bridge. She was portrayed as some kind of supercop, but yet she was very unprofessional -- massaging Alex's shoulders during strategy meetings and always managing to find a moment to whisper some suggestive come-on to him. I just couldn't stand her and hope she doesn't last long.

I also found Alex to be very irresponsible in this book. Normally his family comes first. Yet with two different lunatics threatening his family, he did nothing to protect them and thought nothing of jetting off to Montana or a romantic weekend with Wonder Woman, leaving them alone and vulnerable. That's not the Alex I've come to know in previous books.

I also wish we'd get some closure on these same perps over and over and over. How many times can you read about Kyle Craig threatening Alex and his family before you start to realize that nothing is ever going to happen to any of them? That whole story arc was ridiculous, from the great escape to Alex figuring out the Hallmark clue (talk about obscure!) to the ending. How about some fresh crazies for Alex to chase? It would be a welcome change.

Editorial Review:

Just when Alex thought his life was calming down into a routine of patients and therapy sessions, he finds himself back in the game--this time to catch a criminal mastermind like no other. A spate of elaborate murders in Washington D.C. have the whole East Coast on edge. They are like nothing Alex Cross and his new girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, have ever seen. With each murder, the case becomes increasingly complex. There's only one thing Alex knows: the killer adores an audience. As victims are made into gruesome spectacles citywide, inducing a media hysteria, it becomes clear to Alex that the man he's after is a genius of terror--and he's after fame. The killer has the whole city by its strings--and he'll stop at nothing to become the most terrifying star that Washington D.C. has ever seen.

Should have been named "L is for LAME" 1 out of 5 stars.

I've read a few of Ms. Grafton's books and was looking forward to reading "T is for Trespass." I agree with the other reviewers who rated at one or two stars. In addition to the weak story, lack of mystery, and questionable POV issue (Millhone and Klein's knowledge of the private conversation at the bank), I had difficulty with the formulaic descriptions that introduced each scene. The relentless pattern of: describe something Kinsey sees, describe what Kinsey smells, and then describe something Kinsey hears and compare it to something awful. The pattern became like a nursery rhyme rhythm.

I almost gave up at the halfway point, but my neighbor (who loaned me the book) was ticked off about the bank visit and insisted I read it to confirm her opinion that something was hinky. I guess I should be satisfied that I got what I paid for.

Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone embarks on a terrifying but all-too-real ride that will reveal not everyone is who they say they are.

Editorial Review:

Only a handful of fictional characters are recognized by first name alone. Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas is one of those rare literary heroes who have come alive in readers’ imaginations as he explores the greatest mysteries of this world and the next with his inimitable wit, heart, and quiet gallantry. Now Koontz follows Odd as he is irresistibly drawn onward to a destiny he cannot imagine and to undreamed of places where the perils he will face and the stakes for which he fights will eclipse all that he has known.

The legend began in the obscure little town of Pico Mundo. A fry cook named Odd was rumored to have the extraordinary ability to communicate with the dead. Through tragedy and triumph, exhilaration and heartbreak, word of Odd Thomas’s gifts filtered far beyond Pico Mundo, attracting unforgettable new friends—and enemies of implacable evil. With great gifts comes the responsibility to meet great challenges. But no mere human being was ever meant to face the darkness that now stalks the world—not even one as oddly special as Odd Thomas.

After grappling with the very essence of reality itself, after finding the veil that separates him from his soul mate, Stormy Llewellyn, tantalizingly thin yet impenetrable, Odd longed only to return to a life of quiet anonymity with his two otherworldly sidekicks—his dog Boo and a new companion, one of the few who might rival his old pal Elvis. But a true hero, however humble, must persevere. Haunted by dreams of an all-encompassing red tide, Odd is pulled inexorably to the sea, to a small California coastal town where nothing is as it seems. Now the forces arrayed against him have both official sanction and an infinitely more sinister authority…and in this dark night of the soul dawn will come only after the most shattering revelations of all.

Burnishing Dean Koontz’s stature as a master of suspense and one of our most innovative and gifted storytellers, Odd Hours illuminates a legacy of mystery and hope that will shine on long after the final page.

Fairy Tale 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ayn Rand created a real, modern fairy tale with The Fountainhead. It is hard to find a more honorable literary figure than Rand's creation of Howard Roark. The focus of the novel is mainly set on the true natures of people. You find those who manipulate, those who bully, those who parasite, and one who stands only for purity in how he sees the world. You will also surely be able to point out appropriate figures in your own life as the are archetyped here.

The relationships among the players are complicated and seem at times to be become completely contradictory. The result is that those who need to build a common concept of purity ultimately lose out to those who bravely and independently create their own.

You may come away from this book actually believing in the fairy tale that honesty and purity (in purpose) can truly lead to poverty, but happiness.

Editorial Review:

Howard Roark is an architect whose genius and integrity will not be comprised. He has ideas that work against conventional standards.

Average Poltical Thriller 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the second Flynn novel that I have read, and I had higher hopes with the introduction of Mitch Rapp. The first novel was a bit better, mainly because this seems a little drawn out. The dialogue is weaker, and character development is minimal. The action sequences are pretty good, but they make up a small portion of the book. My favorite authors are Lee Child, and Barry Eisler. True, neither writes a political thriller, but the character development is far superior, and the action/violence is well choreographed.

Editorial Review:

What if America's most powerful leader was also its prime target?

On a busy Washington morning, the stately calm of the White House is shattered as terrorists gain control of the executive mansion, slaughtering dozens of people. The president is evacuated to an underground bunker, but not before nearly one hundred hostages are taken. One man is sent in to take control of the crisis. Mitch Rapp, the CIA's top counterterrorism operative, determines that the president is not as safe as Washington's power elite had thought. Moving among the corridors of the White House, Rapp makes a chilling discovery that could rock Washington to its core: someone within his own government wants his rescue attempt to fail.

Where's the romance? 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read the 2nd book in this series before the 1st one and wasn't too thrilled about it. This book is just as light on the romance as the 2nd one. The story of the curse or whatever it is, is the main focus and the romances are given the back seat. I want my romance books to have romance as the main focus, call me crazy. Even when the book does get around to the couple it's supposed to be about, there's really no substance to it. There's really no conflict between the couple and so they just have sex every now and then and the book gets back to it's main story. However, Gage does intrigue me (his story will be the 3rd book)...I don't think I will read it unless it's given to me because I know it will be a repeat performance of the previous 2 books. I still like Nora Roberts, just not this series.

Editorial Review:

In the town of Hawkins Hollow, it's called The Seven. Every seven years, on the seventh day of the seventh month, strange things happen. It began when three young boys-Caleb, Fox, and Gage-went on a camping trip to The Pagan Stone. And twenty-one years later, it will end in a showdown between evil and the boys who have become men-and the women who love them.
