Editorial Review:

Now in a new edition, Issues for Debate in American Public Policy pulls together a wide range of articles from The CQ Researcher, one of the most respected sources for research on current issues. The CQ Researcher is hailed for its balanced accounts of issues on the public agenda, as CQ staff writers provide background as well as current analysis for each issue considered, and incorporate the voices of people in the thick of the policy process-people from lobbies, nonprofits, think tanks, academia, and government. Popular articles from the first edition have been retained, while new salient issues bring this collection thoroughly up to date.

Each article is framed by substantive questions to get students thinking critically, such as : will vouchers force public schools to improve? Has welfare reform helped reduce child poverty? Should the federal government spend more money to conserve open space? Also included is a yes/no feature that showcases an insider's view from two sides of the debate - an effective starting point for classroom discussion or further research. The selections address every level of government - federal, state, and local - and every branch of government, giving students a sense of how the policy process is affected by community, regional, and national concerns.

Editorial Review:

Against a background of controversy over the possibility that works of art owned by American collectors may have originally been stolen by the Nazis from Jews later killed in the holocaust, the story of one work of art "Landscape with Smokestacks" by Degas captured the headlines. As told by the media, the story is straightforward. The landscape, owned by Jewish banker in the Netherlands, was sent to Paris in 1939. The Nazis occupied France and stole the Landscape. The Jewish banker and his wife were killed in the Holocaust. Their heirs searched for the landscape but did not locate it until, half a century later, it was found in the possession of an art collector in Chicago. The heirs sued to recover the work. But the real story is far more complicated than that told by the media. Had the landscape been sent to Paris for safekeeping or to be sold? Was the work stolen by the nazis or sold to an art dealer during the war? During the litigation a mass of documents was produced that shed light on the fate of the landscape. But because the suit was settled before trial, the story under the surface of the media headlines has not been publicly presented. Trienens, a lawyer for the defendant collector, tells the story of this Degas work's travels rom its prewar home in the Netherlands to the Art Institute of Chicago where it is now on display. This book demonstrates the unpredictable complexity of Holocaust-related restitution cases, and challenges the performance of the media in their superficial tratment of this emotionally charged story.

All law students, future and present, must read this book. This book is a definite eye-opener to the realities of the legal profession. The thesis and supporting research are so compelling that they might actually change the reader's mind as to whether to invest the time and money in a law degree. Alternatively, this book will make the aspiring law student a much better customer of a legal education and/or profession.

For those of us already immersed in the legal profession, this book is an outspoken assessment impossible to muster without several years of experience. I recommend it to young lawyers. The book is such a page-turner that I was almost able to read it from cover to cover in one cross-country flight!!

Author's humour makes a breadth of material fun and readable 5 out of 5 stars.

Required reading for this student of Georgia State University's Executive MBA program ... and I would recommend it to anyone who is or knows an entrepreneur. Ken Menendez does a great job covering a great breadth of factual material and commentary in a conversational, slightly cynical tone. Though written for the businessperson with little exposure to the legal profession, the author manages to keep the experienced reader's interest by offering clever quips and insightful points of advice. It's on my gift list for every small businessperson I know.

A must for reporters 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a reporter and Ken's book proved to be a wonderful find. It explains complex legal issues that reporters cover on a daily basis. For any reporter, beginner or experienced, this is perfect addition for you library or just good reading if you want a better understanding of the legal system.

Editorial Review:

This book explains the mechanics of a civil lawsuit in terms that any law person can understand.

Everyone can be redeemed. Never give up on people. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a compelling and well paced novel unlike anything I've read prior or since. It's difficult to categorize. It's part prison story, part military story, and it's a rags to riches tome as well, where a kid from the other side of the tracks is involved in a tragic turn of events. Like all of us, I suppose, the hero of the book is a good person who involves himself in some ugliness, and pays the price. But the theme of redemption is strong here, and what could have been very dark and cynical, becomes an uplifting and inspirational story of a world that I for one, certainly wish were true. Nice work. This should be in any prison or barracks library.

Editorial Review:

When the lawmakers in the State Capital passed an ill-advised law that could potentially bankrupt the state an innovative governor presents a plan to shift some of the burden to the Federal Government. The plan was to form a National Guard unit in a maximum security prison and work a scheme to get the men of that unit on active duty in the army. The scheme worked better than he could ever have imagined. This is the story of those convicts and the active duty army unit they formed. More than that, it is the story of a very special young man. The one of a kind that comes along once or twice in every century and how he was able to make the most of the opportunity offered him as a member of the Expendable Force. Live with them their adventures in ridding a nation of drug lords, fighting a war in the far east and their participation in a war in the middle east. See how they fared in war games in the American desert against units of the regular army.

Gay 101: A Straight look at Gay Life 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Families of gay people will ESPECIALLY benefit from this question and answer approach to gain more understanding of their children and siblings. I know I did.

L. Rogers, Vancouver Island, BC Canada

After reading "Gay 101", I found it to be an easy, gentle guide to explain the questions someone would have who was unaware about gay life other than the adverse and negative way it is usually portrayed. Older generations, particularly, who grew up in that kind of social climate will find the book insightful when they discover that a close relative, or a friend, is gay.

This book is a first step for straight people to be able to educate themselves further on the matter.

John Hellum, Qualicum Beach, BC Canada

I know a lot of confused people who could be helped by this book. I hope it finds them. This book, while it could have gone a bit farther, was a thorough introduction to everyday issues and questions around gay life and our phobias. Very informative, and emotionally impactful at the same time.

S. West, Colorado, USA

Editorial Review:

That's right. This is the result of extensive interviews with gay men and women from all backgrounds. Sandra Janssen and Steven Coull have made these intriguing and insight-filled surveys come to life. The authors offer us an opportunity to fully appreciate the "lifestyle", and find that there is really not that much which separates all of us.
