Very useful tool for teaching younger crowds 4 out of 5 stars.

I work for a non-profit organization and often teach classes and make presentations about poverty, hunger and homelessness. I am always looking for new activities and tools to help teach especially kids and teens about these important issues and this book has been a tremendous help. It has practical suggestions for getting involved in your community and makes you feel like you can make a difference in the world whether you are 50 years old or 10 years old. Its message is inspiring and empowering. We need more resource tools like this one.

Editorial Review:

In the years following the Civil War, a veritable army of homeless men swept across America's "wageworkers' frontier" and forged a beguiling and bedeviling counterculture known as "hobohemia." Celebrating unfettered masculinity and jealously guarding the American road as the preserve of white manhood, hoboes took command of downtown districts and swaggered onto center stage of the new urban culture. Less obviously, perhaps, they also staked their own claims on the American polity, claims that would in fact transform the very entitlements of American citizenship.

In this eye-opening work of American history, Todd DePastino tells the epic story of hobohemia's rise and fall, and crafts a stunning new interpretation of the "American century" in the process. Drawing on sources ranging from diaries, letters, and police reports to movies and memoirs, Citizen Hobo breathes life into the largely forgotten world of the road, but it also, crucially, shows how the hobo army so haunted the American body politic that it prompted the creation of an entirely new social order and political economy. DePastino shows how hoboes—with their reputation as dangers to civilization, sexual savages, and professional idlers—became a cultural and political force, influencing the creation of welfare state measures, the promotion of mass consumption, and the suburbanization of America. Citizen Hobo's sweeping retelling of American nationhood in light of enduring struggles over "home" does more than chart the change from "homelessness" to "houselessness." In its breadth and scope, the book offers nothing less than an essential new context for thinking about Americans' struggles against inequality and alienation.

Timeless 5 out of 5 stars.

C. Wright Mills classic treastise on white collar jobs in middle class America is as concise today as it was 50 years ago. His incisive summations on capitalism are true to their word, the current actions by corporate America happened then and once again history repeats itself. A must read for Sociology and Business students as a cornerstone for the corportate world.

Editorial Review:

Now a standard on the subject of the new middle class in twentieth-century America, this volume demonstrates how the conditions and styles of middle class life--originating from elements of both the newer lower and upper classes--represent modern society as a whole.

Based on several years of close personal contact with the homeless, this study sheds new light on homelessness in late 20th-century USA. It reveals who the people are, how they live, and why they are on the streets. It also shows how the lives of the homeless testify to human resilience.

Christians should read this 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I agree with the review by Jean-Luc for the most part, but I also wanted to add a few of my own thoughts.

As Sider says early in the book, he's not a policy wonk, so that is his weakest point. Trust him on that one. As a more policy oriented person, I agree that some of those things would be great, if implemented, but that's the hard part of all policy - getting it passed and implemented. Some of his suggestions are not politically feasible (yet).

Some of his other policy ideas are, IMHO, just questionable. Not just politically difficult, but I'm not convinced that all the ideas are that great.

His Biblical framework is wonderful. I enjoyed reading his perspective on that, as he exegetes quite well. I also was biased to begin with, in that I had already done some thinking on my own about this issue, and was finding myself just saying "Wow, that's kinda what I was thinking."

yeah. so good book. read it. don't take the policy stuff to seriously. but take the Biblical stuff seriously. He does a good job there. and the principles of the more holistic view of things, too. Those are good.

Editorial Review:

Just Generosity calls Christians to examine their priorities and their pocketbooks in the face of a scandalous tendency to overlook those among us who suffer while we live in practical opulence. This holistic approach to helping the poor goes far beyond donating clothes or money, envisioning a world in which faith-based groups work with businesses, the media, and the government to help end poverty in the world's richest nation. This updated edition includes current statistics, policy recommendations, and discussions covering everything from welfare reform, changes to Medicade, and the Social Security debate. "Sider's most important book since Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger."--Jim Wallis, author, God's Politics "Sider knows how to lift up people in need…. [An] important and challenging book."--John Ashcroft, former Attorney General of the United States

Jesse Lee Speaks Truth 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

At great personal risk, Rev. Peterson speaks out against the current Black leadership in America. His analyses of the problems in the Black community offers such common sense that it is difficult to understand how anyone could not see the truth of what he says. However, the Black leadership, along with the liberal White elites, have a vested interest in not solving these problems. As long as problems exist, these individuals and groups will continue to rake in millions of dollars in contributions, and they will wield power over the Black vote. When Black Americans start looking to themselves for the solution to problems of poverty, drug abuse, out of wedlock childbirth, and violence they will no longer give their power and their money to the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, or Louis Farrakhan. When Black Americans take on the responsibility themselves to rebuild their communities through hard work and a return to Christian values, they will free themselves from the chains of hate, victim-hood, and anger that the Black leadership so adeptly instills.

I highly recommend that everyone concerned with helping the Black community and especially Blacks themselves, read this book. It will awaken everyone to how Black leaders promote racism while pretending to fight it. It describes in clear terms what happened that destroyed the family, and caused such chaos in the Black community. It offers the way back to stability, prosperity, strong families, and a healthy community.

Editorial Review:

The civil rights establishment, contends Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, has made a career off the downturn of America's inner city, promising solutions but offering only a Band-Aid. Peterson's is a platform of empowerment, teaching individuals and families how to tap into the power within, rather than depending on handouts. Chronicling the failure of the welfare system, denouncing the notion of reparations, citing problems within black churches, and even condemning current black "leaders," Peterson argues that the crisis we face is spiritual, and no economic solution will suffice. He skillfully weaves the realms of politics, culture, psychology, and religion into this profound and relevant book.

Simple, powerful ways to make a difference 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to make a difference in the world. It draws you in and grabs you with the idea that we can do something to make the world better. It begins with making a personal connection to poverty, helping us understand that it is real people who suffer and those people are directly connected to us. When they suffer we must see that it is our responsibility to help them ,because we do live in one world, that we were all meant to share. The book then goes on to outline the UN Millennium Goals and shows us how they can be achieved if we get inspired about what we can do. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with images of what is wrong with the world and few stories of what we can do, this amazing book is a guide for what we can do. Laid out in simple, practical terms, it goes through a day, and shows us how we can do "little" things that can end up making a big difference.

This book can be used by teachers in schools, by business leaders who want to inspire their people, by parents in creating family projects from the 24 ways you can make a difference.

I hope this book becomes a viral brand and spreads hope and inspire millions to see how be a better citizen of the world can fit into anyone's day.

An excellent book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I found this text to be an excellent read! I used it in a Child & Family Policy class. The text was easy to follow and made perfect sense!

Editorial Review:

Now in a substantially revised second edition, this widely adopted text and practical guidebook presents the fundamentals of family-based intervention with clients struggling with chronic poverty-related crises and life stressors. Grounded in Salvador Minuchin's influential systemic model and the extensive experience of all three highly regarded authors, the book illustrates innovative ways for professionals within substance abuse, foster care, and mental health contexts to build collaboration with families and other helpers, and to elicit families' strengths. The second edition features many new case examples and includes discussions of exemplary programs. It also gives increased attention to key factors that make agencies effective and enable them to maintain a family focus over time.

Editorial Review:

Drawing a completely new road map toward a sustainable future, Jack M. Hollander contends that our most critical environmental problem is global poverty. His balanced, authoritative, and lucid book challenges widely held beliefs that economic development and affluence pose a major threat to the world's environment and resources. Pointing to the great strides that have been made toward improving and protecting the environment in the affluent democracies, Hollander makes the case that the essential prerequisite for sustainability is a global transition from poverty to affluence, coupled with a transition to freedom and democracy.
The Real Environmental Crisis takes a close look at the major environment and resource issues--population growth; climate change; agriculture and food supply; our fisheries, forests, and fossil fuels; water and air quality; and solar and nuclear power. In each case, Hollander finds compelling evidence that economic development and technological advances can relieve such problems as food shortages, deforestation, air pollution, and land degradation, and provide clean water, adequate energy supplies, and improved public health. The book also tackles issues such as global warming, genetically modified foods, automobile and transportation technologies, and the highly significant Endangered Species Act, which Hollander asserts never would have been legislated in a poor country whose citizens struggle just to survive.
Hollander asks us to look beyond the media's doomsday rhetoric about the state of the environment, for much of it is simply not true, and to commit much more of our resources where they will do the most good--to lifting the world's population out of poverty.

I used the book and found it to be very helpful to families. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

As a former PCV in The West Indies, I used this book for ideas to share with families who had special needs children. It has many low cost alternatives to equipment that is often too costly for families without resources. The book also addresses the need for a handicapped child to do useful work in the family unit, something that is often forgotten. Self esteem can be taught if a child is given tasks, however small. I had to leave the book at the PeaceCorps Library when I left, and think that no Early Interventionist, OT or PT should be without a copy. A copy in Spanish and a copy in English would be a great asset.

Editorial Review:

Disabled Village Children contains a wealth of clear and detailed information, as well as easy-to-implement strategies for all who are concerned about the well being of children with disabilities. This manual, written especially for those who live in communities with limited resources, explains how to create small community rehabilitation centers and workshops run by either disabled people or the families of children with disabilities. More than 4000 drawings and 200 photos make Disabled Village Children understandable to all.

Topics include the identification and management of common disabilities like polio, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and juvenile arthritis; skills for daily living; brace- and limb-making; fun and useful therapy techniques; low-cost rehabilitation aids and adaptations for home and community.
