Editorial Review:

Now published in more than twenty countries, David Bornstein's How to Change the World has become the bible for social entrepreneurship-in which men and women around the world are finding innovative solutions to a wide variety of social and economic problems. Whether delivering solar energy to Brazilian villagers, expanding work opportunities for disabled people across India, creating a network of home-care agencies to serve poor people with AIDS in South Africa, or bridging the college-access gap in the United States, social entrepreneurs are pioneering problem-solving models that will reshape the 21st century.
How to Change the World provides vivid profiles of many such individuals and what they have in common. The book is an In Search of Excellence for social initiatives, intertwining personal stories, anecdotes, and analysis. Readers will discover how one person can make an astonishing difference in the world.
The case studies in the book include Jody Williams, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for the international campaign against landmines she ran by e-mail from her Vermont home; Roberto Baggio, a 31-year old Brazilian who has established eighty computer schools in the slums of Brazil; and Diana Propper, who has used investment banking techniques to make American corporations responsive to environmental dangers.
The paperback edition will offer a new foreword by the author that shows how the concept of social entrepreneurship has expanded and unfolded over the last few years, including the Gates-Buffetts charitable partnership, the rise of Google, and the increased mainstream coverage of the subject. The book will also update the stories of individual social entrepreneurs that appeared in the cloth edition.

BAD SCIENCE 1 out of 5 stars.

I think this book has caused a lot of needless pain. I don't address these ideas to those who have always had memories of their abuse, however:

Any book that encourages people to believe they were abused with absolutely no concrete evidence is DESTRUCTIVE. Any book that encourages people to get as angry as they possibly can, as sad as they possibly can, and let their abuse define them and take their lives over is destructive. This book has been successful because people feel empty and confused, and they need something to hang onto. How does it help to decide all your problems are caused by abuse in your childhood? This is NOT the answer.

Editorial Review:

Based on the experiences of hundreds of survivors, "The Courage to Heal" profiles victims who share the challenges and triumphs of their personal healing processes. Inspiring and comprehensive, it offers mental, emotional and physical support to all people who are in the process of rebuilding their lives. "The Courage to Heal" offers hope, encouragement and practical advice to every woman who was sexually abused as a child and answers some vital questions, including: How do I know if I was sexually abused? Where does the decision to heal start? How can I break the silence and who will listen? How can I re-build my self-esteem, intimacy and capacity to love? What therapy, support groups, self-help programmes or organisations are available?

exhaustive and detail oriented 3 out of 5 stars.

This is a difficult book to get wrapped around. Which is good news, and then again it is bad news.

The good news is that this is an excellent and wide-sweeping run-up to the current health of our Earth.

Such topics as Our Socially Divided World, Eradicating Poverty, Designing Cities For People, and The Great Mobilization are spread over 287 pages of dense statistics and research, backed up by nearly another 100 pages of footnotes.

The bad news? There is far more content than is of interest to me - the motivated renewable energy reader. Some day I will wade through the less interesting parts, and then leave the remainder as a source reference.

The book cover heralds "REVISED AND EXPANDED". Actually, I would have preferred the less-is-more previous edition.

Editorial Review:

"How to build a more just world and save the planet....We should all heed Brown's advice."—Bill Clinton

In this updated edition of the landmark Plan B, Lester Brown outlines a survival strategy for our early twenty-first-century civilization. The world faces many environmental trends of disruption and decline, including rising temperatures and spreading water shortage. In addition to these looming threats, we face the peaking of oil, annual population growth of 70 million, a widening global economic divide, and a growing list of failing states. The scale and complexity of issues facing our fast-forward world have no precedent

With Plan A, business as usual, we have neglected these issues overly long. In Plan B 3.0, Lester R. Brown warns that the only effective response now is a World War II-type mobilization like that in the United States after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestselling conspiracy expert exposes the most shocking secret of all - the cabal that runs the world can be traced back to humankind's prehistory. What secrets connect Egypt's Great Pyramids and Sphinx, the Freemasons and the Council on Foreign Relations? They are revealed in RULE BY SECRECY. Jim Marrs examines the world's most closely guarded secrets, tracing the history of secret societies and the power they have wielded, from the ancient mysteries to the lastest conspiracy theories. Searching for truth, he uncovers disturbing evidence that the real movers and shakers of the world collude secretly to start and stop wars, manipulate stock markets and interest rates, maintain class distinctions, and even censor the six o'clock news. These modern-day cabalists operate under the auspices of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Bilderbergers, the Trilateral Commission, the CIA, and even the Vatican. Impeccably researched, this masterful synthesis of information long hidden from the public is an in-depth look at the people and organizations that rule our lives.

"Remarkable . . . A true crime classic . . . A journalistic masterpiece . . . [A] saga of a brutal, bloody, bewildering year in the Baltimore Police Department's homicide unit . . . This is interior reporting at its finest." Associated Press

"We seem to have an insatiable appetite for police stories . . . . David Simon's entry is far and away the best, the most readable, reliable and relentless of them all . . . . An eye for the scenes of slaughter and pursuit and an ear for the cadences of cop talk, both business and banter, lend Simon's account . . . the fascination that truth often has . . . . Fueled by coffee, cigarettes and the drive to 'put down' (i.e., close) cases, these heroes keep at it long after ordinary mortals would have lost heart." The Washington Post

"This may be the best true-crime book, the best naked look at murder and cops and crime and life on the killing streets of big-city America in the late 20th century . . . . A rich, revealing look at the twisted lives of killers and their victims and at the men who are obsessed with solving the most heinous and baffling murders." San Diego Union

I want to thank everyone in the fellowship for showing me how to stay clean for more than 14 years to this date of my review. I rarely go to meetings today due a new direction in spirituality, however, the foundation of this program has been grounded in my life to have kept me clean for this long. If you are new to recovery, do what I did. Go to the meetings for the coffee. I say this cause it really doesn't matter why you go to meetings in the beginning as long as you suit up and show up. You will go for the right reasons eventually and they will make you get this book. It worked for me thus far and I hope you find recovery as I did utilizing this book and my sponsor for the answers to stay clean ONE DAY AT A TIME. God Bless!

Editorial Review:

Narcotics Anonymous: White Booklet

This booklet contains the twelve steps or principles to recovery, the twelve traditions of NA, and an inspiring selection of personal stories written by men and women who are recovering from an addiction to drugs. Recommended for anyone embarking on the road to recovery, and for all who want to help themselves or someone else stay clean.

Editorial Review:

In the battle for U.S. health care, patients and doctors are losing. .

Who Killed Health Care? shows how to win the war. . .

One of the nation's most respected health care analysts, Regina Herzlinger exposes the motives and methods of those who have crippled America's health care system-figures in the insurance, hospital, employment, governmental, and academic sectors. She proves how our current system, which is organized around payers and providers rather than the needs of its users, is dangerously eroding patient welfare and is pushing costs out of the reach of millions.

.

Who Killed Health Care? then outlines Herzlinger's bold new plan for a consumer-driven system that will deliver affordable, high-quality care to everyone. By putting insurance money in the hands of patients, removing the middleman in the doctor-patient relationship, and giving employers cost relief, consumers and physicians will be empowered to make the system work the way it should. Herzlinger describes in precise detail how her innovative program will provide

. .
    .
  • Smaller, disease-focused medical facilities that provide complete care for patients.
  • A national system of medical records that provides privacy with confidential access by approved practitioners.
  • Mandatory performance evaluations of all hospitals and all other medical organizations.
  • Mandatory health insurance with subsidies for those who cannot afford it.
. .

Who Killed Health Care? is a call to arms that must be answered; the welfare of every American hangs in the balance.

. .

A brilliant analysis A must-read. Bill George, Professor, Harvard Business School and Former CEO of Medtronic

. .

As it becomes more and more obvious to everyone that our current health care system is unsustainable, this is the book that had to be written. Daniel H. Johnson, Jr. MD, former president of the American Medical Association

. .

Regina Herzlingers ideas to tackle the crisis of the U.S. health care system are based on keen knowledge of the systems existing difficulties along with insights that introduce the reader to new streamlined choices that have the potential of getting both quantity and cost under control. Joseph Kennedy, founder, chairman, and president, Citizens Energy Corporation, CEO, Citizens Health Care, former representative (D-Mass)

. . Regina Herzlinger offers a vision of the way things can be, should be, and will be sooner or later. The only question is: how long do we have to wait? Greg Scandlen, founder, Consumers for Health Choices

. . Regi Herzlinger has brilliantly articulated a better way embracing the principles of competition and innovation that cause every other sector of our economy to thrive. Discharging American health care from the ICU can only happen by putting individual Americans not politicians and bureaucrats back in charge of their health care decisioins. U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla), M.D.

. . Following on the heels of her landmark Market-Driven Health Care, Herzlinger lays it on the line with her expose of what many who work in the health care industry have felt in their gut. Now it is articulated in an entertaining and must-read portrayal, with you and me as the only way out. Dennis White, executive vice president for strategic development, National Business Coalition on Health

. . A wonderful Orwellian romp through issues which carry a deadly irony. The killers of health care are, of course, the third parties, each of which has an itchy palm and a commitment to profit or power which exceeds the commitment to service, with each engaging the others within a politically shaped box. Rarely has the case for the public been made with so much force, foresight, and wit, and a better way forward shown so clearly. James F. Fries, MD, Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine

. . You can practically hear the war chants as Professor Herzlinger sets out her view of whats wrong with the health care system and how to fix it. Youd best read it so you can decide which side you will be on when the battle is joined. Paul Levy, CEO, Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA

. . . . . . Regina Herzlinger, the nations leading expert on consumer-driven health care, has given us a brilliant analysis of the flaws in our health care system and what it will take to get it back on track. Her latest book is a must-read. Bill George, Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School, Former CEO, Medtronic, and author of Authentic Leadership

. . You dont have to agree with her diagnosis and prescription for the U.S. health care system, but you do have to read her book. Once again, Professor Herzlinger has put together a well researched, well written, and very provocative blueprint for the future of health care. Peter L. Slavin, MD, President, Massachusetts General Hospital

Editorial Review:

America spends more than any other developed nation on healthcare—$2.1 trillion in 2007 alone. But 47 million Americans remain uninsured, and of those Americans who are insured, many suffer from poor health. In his ground-breaking proposal, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel offers up a plan to comprehensively restructure the delivery and quality of our healthcare. By eliminating employer-healthcare and establishing an independent program to evaluate healthcare plans and insurance companies, he offers a no-nonsense guide to how government can institute private insurance options that will allow each of us a choice of doctor and plan.

With the rate of healthcare costs rapidly outpacing our gross domestic product, we can no longer afford to maintain our fragmented delivery of care, or entertain reforms that seek to patch, rather than cure, a fractured system. Accessible, straightforward, and revolutionary in its approach, Healthcare, Guaranteed is an inarguable guide to lasting healthcare reform.

Excellent, Unbiased, well written and documented 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I originally read this book when it was first published! I found it hard hitting, have quoted from it frequently and have recommended it to numerous indivduals.
I feel her book does not go far enough, because; let us be honest, she knew she would "get out" of the circumstances. It was an experiment for her; and that kept her from sinking into despair. Total desperation, and fear that her children would never have full tummies. This is the plight of the working poor everywhere in America. To say it is not is to close ones eyes and live in ignorance.
This book is best read without the snacks, without the liquid refreshment within arms reach. Let your stomach be a little empty, so you can permit your body to feel the book as well.

Editorial Review:

Millions of Americans work full-time, year-round, for poverty level wages. Journalist Barbara Ehrenreich decided to join them in order to find out how anyone survives on six dollars an hour. So began a gruelling, hair-raising and darkly funny odyssey though the underworld of working America.
