Editorial Review:

We all witness, in advertising and on supermarket shelves, the fierce competition for our food dollars. In this engrossing expose, Marion Nestle goes behind the scenes to reveal how the competition really works and how it affects our health. The abundance of food in the United States--enough calories to meet the needs of every man, woman, and child twice over--has a downside. Our overefficient food industry must do everything possible to persuade people to eat more--more food, more often, and in larger portions--no matter what it does to waistlines or well-being. Like manufacturing cigarettes or building weapons, making food is very big business. Food companies in 2000 generated nearly $900 billion in sales. They have stakeholders to please, shareholders to satisfy, and government regulations to deal with. It is nevertheless shocking to learn precisely how food companies lobby officials, co-opt experts, and expand sales by marketing to children, members of minority groups, and people in developing countries. We learn that the food industry plays politics as well as or better than other industries, not least because so much of its activity takes place outside the public view. Editor of the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health, Nestle is uniquely qualified to lead us through the maze of food industry interests and influences. She vividly illustrates food politics in action: watered-down government dietary advice, schools pushing soft drinks, diet supplements promoted as if they were First Amendment rights. When it comes to the mass production and consumption of food, strategic decisions are driven by economics--not science, not common sense, and certainly not health. No wonder most of us are thoroughly confused about what to eat to stay healthy. An accessible and balanced account, Food Politics will forever change the way we respond to food industry marketing practices. By explaining how much the food industry influences government nutrition policies and how cleverly it links its interests to those of nutrition experts, this pathbreaking book helps us understand more clearly than ever before what we eat and why.

I thank God for this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am so thankful for this book and the workbook. God has used this book, in my life, to reveal things within me that I did not know were there. I now realize that I went through life constantly protecting myself and functioning in a way that was completely unhealthy. My recommendation, to you, is do not pick up this book, unless you truely desire to be healed from the wounds of your past. Sometimes, before we can be healed, we have to be strong and be willing to face ourselves in entirety. It will take courage and strength. I would also recommend this book for anyone whose spouse or friend has been abused. It will allow a deeper understanding into what they are going through. I also believe that this book/workbook would be helpful to someone who has not been sexually abused, but has maybe been exposed to other types of abuse (mental, verbal, emotional, neglect) in their childhood.

Editorial Review:

Someone you know has been sexually abused.

A recent study indicated that 38% of the women interviewed had been sexually abused by an adult or family member by the age of 18.

You may think you don't know anyone who has been sexually abused, especially if most of your friends and acquaintances are Christians. But the statistics indicate otherwise: sexual abuse knows no religious or social boundaries.

The Wounded Heart is an intensely personal and specific look at this most "soul deadening" form of abuse. Personal because it may be affecting you, your spouse, a close friend or neighbor, or someone you know well at church. And specific because it goes well beyond the general issues and solutions discussed in other books.

Dr. Allender's book reaches deep into the wounded heart of someone you know, exploring the secret lament of the soul damaged by sexual abuse-and laying hold of the hope buried there by the One whose unstained image we all bear.

Inside Texas Medical Center... 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Lisa Belkin has created an amazing book here - she definitely did her research. The book consists of a few case studies of patients who pose ethical dilemas. Belkin takes you inside meetings of the ethics committee at the hospital, she takes you to the patient's bedside to see what the patient actually wants. Some of the patients she follows are a young kid who has been hospitalized for 15 years with a terminal condition, beating all odds by staying alive that long, several premature babies, and a man who was paralyzed almost completely after getting shot in the spine. It's a great look at medical ethics - Lisa Belkin's book asks all the right questions.

The book is in a very easy-to-read format - the stories of the patients she follows are all intertwined throughout the book. For example, you'll read about Patrick for 30-or-so pages, and then she'll switch over to update you on Taylor's story. She does this because you are reading the stories in "real time" as they happened; all of this took place in a certain time span in the hospital. It's exciting and fast-paced non-fiction - I read it in two days and didn't put it down.

It will break your heart, because often the ethics committee has to bring money into the discussion, as much as they would like to treat every patient as if money was not an issue. This book is SO worth reading, for anyone who is interested in medicine and healthcare at all.

This book was recommended by my therapist and after reading it I gave it to a friend who is also an adult child of an alcoholic. I haven't got the book back so I'm buying another copy for myself. I NEED to read it again and again. It opened my eyes and put a lot of the pieces of the puzzle together for me. Although it's hard to face some of the realities this book points out, I believe it to be one of the vital steps I am taking in trying to change my life for the better. It's never too late.

It will never happen to me 5 out of 5 stars.

Still the best introduction to the impact of chemical dependency on the family. I must give about 5 copies of this away to my students every year.

Really good 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great read for anyone who has grown up or is growing up in an alcoholic family. It helps the reader in very simple ways to understand the dynamics of alcoholic families and offers concrete ways of dealing with issues and problems. I recommend it to anyone currently dealing with alcoholism or dealing with the aftermath of an alcoholic upbringing, or even for someone just curious about the effects of alcoholism on families.

Editorial Review:

This "little green book," as it has come to be known to hundreds of thousands of C.O.A.'s and A.C.O.A.'s, is meant to help the reader understand the roles children in alcoholic families adopt, the problems they face in adulthood as a result, and what they can do to break the pattern of destruction.

A greatly overlooked recovery book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a Hazelden book specifically written as a study aid to The Big Book. It helps to clarify and illuminate the 12 step process and is often used by sponsors as they guide their sponsees through the steps. It is a tool which, if used in addition to (and not in replacement of)the basic program literature, may add a layer of depth and understanding to the step process. This book is also used as the basis of step-study groups in some areas. It appears to have been used to a much greater extent in the past than it is now and it deserves a second look for what it may have to offer.

Good supplement to the Big Book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great supplement to the big book, especiall if you are a group leader or if you just want to improve you understanding of the 12 Steps.

A must 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great little book. It should be used in conjunction with the Big Book and the 12 X 12. I suggest finding the Little Red Book Guide to accompany it. I use them with my sponsees.

Editorial Review:

For over 50 years, The Little Red Book has been a primer for members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Each page acts as a study guide to the Big Book and its teachings.

Editorial Review:

Classic text and perennial best-seller expanded and revised.

This new edition of Perfect Daughters, a pivotal book in the ACoA movement, identifies what differentiates the adult daughters of alcoholics from other women.

When this groundbreaking book first appeared over ten years ago, Dr. Ackerman identified behavior patterns shared by daughters of alcoholics. Adult daughters of alcoholics-"perfect daughters" -operate from a base of harsh and limiting views of themselves and the world. Having learned that they must function perfectly in order to avoid unpleasant situations, these women often assume responsibility for the failures of others. They are drawn to chemically dependent men and are more likely to become addicted themselves. More than just a text that identifies these behavior patterns, this book collects the thoughts, feelings and experiences of twelve hundred perfect daughters, offering readers an opportunity to explore their own life's dynamics and thereby heal and grow.

This edition contains updated information throughout the text, and completely new material, including chapters on eating disorders and abuse letters from perfect daughters in various stages of recovery, and helpful, affirming suggestions from Dr. Ackerman at the end of every chapter. This book is essential for every one who found validation, hope, courage and support in the pages of the original Perfect Daughters, as well as new readers and every therapist who confronts these issues.

Also includes: a comprehensive reference section and complete index.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...Go Away 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

With great description and vivid detail, Lucy Grealy explains the traumatic effects of living with cancer treatments and a crooked jaw line in her memoir, The Autobiography of a Face. Grealy reveals her inner thoughts of self-consciousness in her everyday interactions, portraying how even a simple conversation can provoke great anxiety: "Out of nowhere came an intense feeling that he shouldn't be looking at me, that I was too horrible to look at, that I wasn't worthy of being looked at, that my ugliness was equal to a great personal failure" (185). Though most people can connect with having been self-conscious at one point in their lives, Grealy lives with the torment daily, avoiding mirrors and trying to overcome the frustration.
Though she writes in past tense speaking in a conversational tone, she occasionally speaks from her present self, referring to times such as "years later." Readers may either feel relieved that there is a resolved ending or frustrated at the break in character: "Some years later, I don't remember exactly how many, as my family was milling about the kitchen and I was leafing through the paper at the table, someone dated an event as something that had happened `before Lucy had cancer'" (43). The two headed narrator allows us to understand that her current self is still not undergoing cancer and acts as a pause from her younger voice.
Grealy's extended period of time in a hospital has allowed for great observation using the senses: "The smells and sounds were so familiar--the sweet disinfectant and wax, always an aroma of overcooked food in the background, the metallic clinks of IV poles as they were pushed along the floor on their stands" (183). By giving distinct imagery and specific examples, readers can picture themselves accompanying her through her journey. The powerful imagery parallels the powerful emotions. Her captivating descriptions of the treatments and obstacles of ugliness and death brought me to tears. The stirring story spills out onto the paper using the literary techniques of a two headed narrator and poignant descriptions. By drawing us into her memoir, we understand the significance of self-image and the appreciation of survival.

Karin Lavie

Editorial Review:

This powerful memoir is about the premium we put on beauty and on a woman's face in particular. It took Lucy Grealy twenty years of living with a distorted self-image and more than thirty reconstructive procedures before she could come to terms with her appearance after childhood cancer and surgery that left her jaw disfigured. As a young girl, she absorbed the searing pain of peer rejection and the paralyzing fear of never being loved.

Dora Conroy has a small eclectic antique shop. When she receives a shipment of items she won at auction, she realizes some of the wrong items were shipped. It is then that she becomes a target by a ruthless businessman. Her new tenant, Jed Skimmerhorn, is attracted to Dora and feels the need to protect her. As they work together to solve the mystery of the black-market artwork, they must battle his past, her family, and an international criminal to have a future.

This is an older work by NR. Well written, and I liked the characters Dora and Jed. The secondary characters were very well done, and an important part of the story.

Good read! 3 out of 5 stars.

I have gone through the JD Robb series and am waiting for the next release. So I turned to older stories that Nora wrote. I liked this one. It's good.

Editorial Review:

After purchasing an odd assortment of auction items, Philadelphia antiques dealer becomes the deadly focus of a sinister international smuggler, as she and her handsome upstairs tenant, ex-cop Jed Skimmerhorn, set out to uncover the truth.

A "must have" book for novice Private Investigators 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have finished reading this book, and here are my findings:

The book is very easy to read. In some portions, it is almost a page turner, and you could forget you're reading an instruction text. The information is presented clear and accurate, with enough personal stories to put the use of the techniques into context without becoming too "wordy" or redundant. The book does not extensively cover legal terminology or evidence collection and photography procedures (for that, I'd recommend "The Process of Investigation" by Sennewald and Tsukayama), but it does a great job of covering the basic techniques of Surveillance, Interviewing, Interrogation, Internet Database and Public Records Searchies and other Electronic Surveillance measuresOverall I would say that this book is a must read for anyone who is considering entering the field of Private Investigation.

Editorial Review:

The gumshoe go-to—revised and updated.

Easy-to-use and fantastically inclusive, this is the book on private investigation, whether you want to establish yourself as a professional or just use some of the tools of a P.I. for your own business. You’ll get the low-down on pre-employment research, tenant screening, adoption searches, safeguarding yourself from investigation, and much more.

Good Information! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Got this book as a gift for my sister, she really found it to be very informative and interesting. It has a section of color photos of different types of drugs, and in depth looks at what they all do to you.
If you know someone who uses and want a friendly way to tell them it might not be the best idea, this is a great book!
My sisters friend was looking at it too and said he had learned so much in just the 10 minutes he had looked at it!

Editorial Review:

Neither a "just say no" treatise nor a "how-to" manual, this easy-to-read handbook is based on the conviction that well-informed people make better decisions. It provides information on how drugs enter the body, how they manipulate the brain, their short- and long-term effects, the "high" they produce and the circumstances in which they can be deadly. Little material is available to the public on the most up-to-date psychological and pharmacological research on drugs. Whether the reader is a student confronted by drugs for the first time, an accountant reaching for another cup of coffee, or a health educator, this book aims to provide a clear understanding of how drugs work and the consequences of their use.
