Editorial Review:

Mosiac of Thought Online Course available to all adopters of 25 copies or more of Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition.

Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmermann have returned with a new edition of Mosaic of Thought that features 70 percent new material. When the first edition published ten years ago, Mosaic of Thought became a runaway best seller as the first book to explicitly describe the use and benefits of strategy-based comprehension instruction. Since then comprehension strategy instruction has exploded, leading to numerous inspiring variations on Mosaic's instructional principles, as well as a widening of the comprehension research base. Now the second edition offers up-to-the-minute insight for classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and school leaders everywhere, and reminds everyone of precisely what effective, long-lasting comprehension teaching looks like.

Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition, has been carefully revised and reflects Keene and Zimmermann's latest thinking. It's designed to help teachers implement practical, thoughtful ideas for teaching comprehension in contemporary classrooms through the seven core strategies that successful readers use to engage with texts.

Packed with new classroom examples, grounded in the latest research, and written in the same accessible tone as the first edition, reaffirms the essential elements of powerful comprehension teaching introduced in the first edition while adding and updating features, including:
  • Key Ideas sections for each strategy that describe crucial comprehension concepts
  • new classroom examples that show comprehension strategies put into action in dynamic, literature-rich, current classrooms
  • new opening vignettes that illustrate the concepts students will learn through explorations of the thinking used by proficient adult readers
  • new tools to help teachers create effective reader's workshops
  • innovations from teachers around the country for fine tuning think-alouds and conferring practices
  • new advice on long-term instructional planning.
Keene and Zimmermann have also created an invaluable Q-and-A section with smart, informed responses to the questions that today's teachers most frequently ask about strategy-based teaching.

Whether you are just now joining the hundreds of thousands of teachers who have made Keene and Zimmermann their central resource for comprehension teaching, or whether you've relied on their advice for years, Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition, will change your literacy instruction - and possibly your own reading - forever. It's filled with vital, new information, new research, and proven practices. Read it today and give your students strategies for connecting with texts that will last a lifetime.

This is just what I've needed. Excellent source for getting kids motivated and on tasks that help THEM to learn. Outlines possible problems and solutions ahead of time. Great ideas for taking centers I already want and making them real learning stations in the classroom.

Other teachers on my floor are already looking to "borrow" it.

This was an excellent resource! With our school getting ready to teach combination grades-I will highly recommend it to all teachers. The ideas are practical and with a limited budget, will be attainable in our classes.
Finally- a book to help right away, simple ideas that we can all use!

Patrice Third grade teacher 5 out of 5 stars.

When I received the book, I sat down and read it through and through. This book is exactly what I need for my third grade class. The concept of practice centers for intermediate students makes sense. Debbie Diller's book
gave me the written "how" and provided the blackline masters to put those ideas into practice. I just completed my first week of school and I have already used several of her ideas. This book is easy to read, understand, and most importantly practical.

This workbook gives thorough practice through the use of synomyms, antonyms, compound words, homophones, homographs, plurals, etc., to ensure that your child will learn the meanings of the words used in each section. Through a variety of exercises that vary within and between each section, any child will become familiar with not only the word's meaning, but also the meaning of each type of word (i.e., synomym, homophone, etc). This is an excellent tool for teaching vocabulary.

I homeschool my languge impaired child. This book has fit right in with his needs. It groups words into categories that make sense. The exercises used to reinforce the words are fun. It's not as challenging as Wordly Wise, and like all vocabulary-developing workbooks I've found, it could be improved by incorporating more pictures/drawings. Nonetheless, it's a great resource.

Editorial Review:

This is an important book for teachers, administrators, prospective teachers, college professors, or anyone seeking to provide quality teaching to children in their first years of schooling.
    - Harvard Educational Review

Among the many changes to sweep American literacy education has been a move toward whole class instruction. Nonetheless, children still bring to literacy a wide range of experiences and competencies. How, then, might teachers best support a literate community yet still meet the needs of individual readers? For Fountas and Pinnell, the answer lies in guided reading, which allows children to develop as individual readers within the context of a small group. Their new book is the richest, most comprehensive guided reading resource available today and the first systematic offering of instructional support for guided reading adherents.

Guided Reading was written for K-3 classroom teachers, reading resource teachers, teacher educators, preservice teachers, researchers, administrators, and staff developers. Based on the authors' nine years of research and development, it explains how to create a balanced literacy program based on guided reading and supported by read aloud, shared reading, interactive writing, and other approaches. While there is an entire chapter devoted solely to the process by which children become literate, every chapter clearly presents the theoretical underpinnings of the practices it suggests. Also included are guidelines for:

  • observation and assessment
  • dynamic grouping of readers
  • creating sets of leveled books
  • selecting and introducing books
  • teaching for strategies
  • classroom management.
  • Best of all, there are well over 2,500 leveled books in the Appendixes, along with many other reproducible resources that teachers will use for years to come.

"Good first teaching is the foundation of education and the right of every child," assert the authors. With the publication of this book, educators themselves will find the foundation in reading skills instruction they so rightly deserve.

15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

My son, who is not really interested in Language Arts, but is good at it, got very interested in this book. He would ask to do vocabulary and more vocabulary.

This book makes learning vocabulary fun even though it's through repetition. Each lesson contains many pages of the same words but in different ways and it gets kids into vocabulary and learning new words happily!

    I highly recommend this book!

excellent for after-school enrichment 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I learned about this book from Beestar online vocabulary program for kids. Vocabulary is the foundation for good reading and writing. Many smart kids don't do well in reading because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved quickly. Young students need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It gives thorough practice through the use of synonyms, antonyms, compound words, homophones, homographs, plurals, etc., to ensure that your child will learn the meanings of the words used in each section. Through a variety of exercises that vary within and between each section, a child will become familiar with not only the word's meaning, but also the meaning of each type of word (i.e., synonym, homophone, etc). Little by little, this book built the word power for my child without stressing. Now his reading level is at the top of his class. His confidence is high. This book is an excellent tool for after-school enrichment.

A MUST for K-2 teachers. 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with the black line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. My favorite is the alphabet printed in several different fonts so students can learn all the ways 'A' might look. I wish I had this 21 years ago when I started teaching. I use it daily now.

    Editorial Review:

This book provides teachers with concept sorting ideas followed by picture sorts for developing phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, letter recognition and concept of words in print. This companion volume augments that content with numerous reproducible sorts that specifically address the needs of the syllables and affixes speller. Accompanying the sorts are step-by-step directions for guiding pupils through the sorting lessons, as well as follow-up activities and tips for using the sorts to their best advantage. Designed for elementary educators' use as part of a reading curriculum where emergent spelling is covered.

Too short, and better books exist 3 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I was disappointed to discover this book is more like 50 activities, not 50 lessons. I realized only after I ordered this book that it is a slim 64 pages. Each "lesson" is like an idea for a student writing assignment, although many of them are not particularly inspired. I tried to use this book with middle school students, but many of them complained that the assignments were cliche and forced them to write on prompts they had heard before (like write an autobiography, describe someone's personality in a paragraph, write about something that annoys you, write about the weather today, etc.). I felt that half of these prompts were things that as a teacher, I could easily come up with on my own. The other half are fine and good, but brief. For my purposes, this book could be condensed to a two-page list of creative writing / essay topics.

At 9.99 for 64 pages, you are better off spending 19.99 on a 300 page book that will last beyond a few weeks, and do more than list off writing prompts.

This book could be useful if you are teaching 4th-5th grade students, and like to have the structure of a book to guide you through getting the class excited about a single writing prompt. If you're a more creative type (and not a by-the-line, I read a cookbook for every detail type), you're better off giving yourself an hour to brainstorm a bunch of writing prompts, typing them up, and using your own ideas.
