Editorial Review:

When parents are asked what they want for their children, they usually answer that they want their children to be happy. Why, then, is happiness rarely mentioned as a goal of education? This book explores what we might teach if we were to take happiness seriously as a goal of education. It asks, first, what it means to be happy and, second, how we can help children to understand it. It notes that we have to develop a capacity for unhappiness and a willingness to alleviate the suffering of others to be truly happy. Criticizing our current almost exclusive emphasis on economic well-being and pleasure, Nel Noddings discusses the contributions of making a home, parenting, cherishing a place, the development of character, interpersonal growth, finding work that one loves, and participating in a democratic way of life. Finally, she explores ways in which to make schools and classrooms cheerful places. Nell Noddings is Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, at Stanford University. She is past president of the Philosophy of Education Society and of the John Dewey Society. In addition to twelve books, she is the author of more than 170 articles and chapters on various topics ranging from the ethics of care to mathematical problem solving. Her latest books are Starting at Home: Caring and Social Policy (University of California Press) and Educating Moral People: A Caring Alternative to Character Education (Teachers College Press), both published in 2002.

Breakthrough to New Understanding 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a 'must read' for parents and all professionals who have contact with the young.
Of particular signicance is the section dealing with the importance of nutrition. Food for serious thought as well as for the brain !

A label only tells about symptoms, not the causes. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Pauc's "the Learning Disability Myth" is fast, clear and easy to read. Using all the latest neurological research, he cuts through the educational jargon that gives a name to your child's difficulties, but would not get rid of what is actually causing the symptoms.
Taking a health history of the child, and looking at the symptoms, he shows how to design an exercise program that will change the function of the brain. Combined with restructioning the connections in the brain he urges providing the chemical support the brain needs by the simple method of changing the child's diet.
Unlike most books on the subject which fail to take advantage of the research by neurologists that the brain is plastic, he suggests methods to give your child the best organized brain possible.
Pauc lets you know that a label is not a life sentence and that you can help your child.

Exceptionally well organized and thorough. 5 out of 5 stars.

This outstanding book for parents and caregivers of two year olds is the third in a series. It offers activities that promote total child development, including physical, mental, and the creative aspects of learning. The organization into easily located categories makes it easy to quickly locate an appropriate activity. As a grandparent-caregiver who used the books for Baby and One-year olds, I am pleased to find that the activities are just as well thought-out and age appropriate in this book as in the other two. The instructions are very clear and there are enough activities that even if only half of them were tried you would never run out of interesting things to do.

Editorial Review:

A favorite of parents and caregivers. Over 300 innovative and easy-to-do activities. Twos.

Editorial Review:

A great new way to getall kids excited about math!

Fantasy sports are a hit worldwide, and now teachers and parents can take advantage of this phenomenon to give students a reason to look forward to doing math. The games and activities in Fantasy Basketball and Mathematics will get kids excited about learning and practicing math, even if they're not big sports fans. With this fun-filled educational resource, you can teach one math concept or many and plan lessons that can last for a week or a whole season.

Here's how it works. Students create fantasy teams by picking real-life professional basketball players, following their players' statistics, and calculating their team's total points using algebraic or nonalgebraic methods specifically designed to complement the math skills they are learning. The instructions are easy to follow, and the dynamic hands-on games address all learning styles and abilities. The book includes more than 100 scoring systems that give you the flexibility to customize the content according to your students' skill levels.

In addition to the basic Fantasy Basketball game, the book contains easy-to-use lesson plans, reproducible worksheets for extra practice on 46 different math concepts, graphing activities, quizzes, a pre- and post- test, and an answer key. More than just a fun way to learn math, the book's activities also support the NCTM Math Standards.

"The beauty of the Fantasy Sports and Mathematics programs is that while all the students are busy having fun, enjoying the competition, and building better relationships with sports-minded parents, they are, much to their surprise, learning to love math."
--Ryan D. Verver, math teacher,Southwest Chicago Christian School

"Students were eager to be the first in their math class to tally their scores and begin working with their team's stats. It was great to see boys and girls who were working both above and below grade level fully engaged in using their math skills and learning new ones."
--Sara Suchman, Harvard Graduate School of Education, former middle school director

Chameleon Kid Conquers Meltdown! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just received a copy of Chameleon Kid - Controlling Meltdown Before He Controls You and am in awe of the entire package! It's a hard covered book with a vibrantly-illustrated cover which is sure to catch the attention of any child...or even adults like me. The cleverly illustrated book takes "meltdown" to a new level of learning. While meltdowns and behavioral outbursts are typically beyond a child's conscious control, this book offers ways for kids to take control of meltdown by "taming the monster."

"Meltdown" is cartoonized into a cartoonish monster. The book gives young people a bookful of ways to use their own power to push this monster away to avoid the unpleasant behaviors that he can create. By making "Meltdown" visual, it helps young people see this character as something to avoid, but beyond that the book offers pages and pages of ways to do this in a fun and colorful almost comic strip book format. Each page of this 41 page high quality book offers one suggestion to avoid "Meltdown." But, on top of that, each page also offers an idiom (which can be tricky for kids on the spectrum to understand) and better defines that idiom. So, there are SO many levels of teaching and entertainment on this book, that I think it will be a favorite book in many families. Each page section also has a cartoonized large pictured child which makes the book real and not just a comic strip.

At the end of the colorful educational and fun ride through this book, Ms. Larson offers a checklist of options that can be used by a child to triumph over "Meltdown." In addition, an activity page offers suggestions of how to deal with meltdown issues that occur and how to think ahead of "Meltdown."

With the beginning of school just around the corner, this is a perfect gift for your family, the new teacher or the school library. It's a unique book tackling issues that haven't been so cleverly handled ever. It's such a gorgeous book, it will be the perfect gift. My feeling is that if you buy one copy, you'll want a second or more to give as gifts. It truly is a great piece of work for children of all ages.

Kudos to Ms Larson!

Editorial Review:

An occasional meltdown is a reality of childhood for most children as well as their parents and teachers. But for a child with ASD, meltdowns are often frequent, explosive, long-lasting events. In The Chameleon Kid, the author encourages children to control the personalized Meltdown lurking inside by evoking the adaptable abilities of the chameleon. Supported by colorful cartoon-like illustrations, Elaine Marie Larson uses short verses to present the various reactions that the bad guy Meltdown can cause, followed by advice for how the Chameleon Kid can adapt his emotions and attitudes to prevent Meltdown from taking over. In the process, readers learn various methods of self-regulating their emotion. The Chameleon Kid also explains more than a dozen idioms related to emotions, such as have a cow, take a hike, and stubborn as a mule.

Editorial Review:

This brand-new and important workbook gives parents easy-to-apply methods for educating their third-grade children, whether as home schoolers with parents taking full control of their child’s studies, or as parents cooperating with their child’s teachers in standard classroom settings. The book gives parents guiding principles for teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Pages are perforated for multipurpose use, which can include independent learning by children or shared learning when kids and parents work together. Four curriculum sections are designed to guide teaching parents: Promoting literacy—reading, writing, listening, and speaking . . . Math—number patterns, problem solving, and other math-related concepts . . . Science—life, earth, and physical sciences . . . and Social Studies—history, geography, economics, and culture. Each section outlines subject matter for children to learn, preceded by planning and implementation strategies for parents. Parents get advice on ways to enhance the child’s learning experience. They include Teaching Tips, or ways to explain difficult concepts to children, and ways to assess a child’s success in grasping the given material. There is also advice on integrating the Arts, with suggestions for interactive learning in music and art; and activities and Games to promote hands-on learning experiences that relate to specific subject content. In each subject section a special feature titled In Your Community describes ways to explore the community where the family lives, taking advantage of local cultural affairs, business activities, environmental concerns, and government functions. Though the book is written primarily for parents, third-grade classroom teachers looking for new ideas and methods will also find inspiration. This book is one of three titles that introduce teaching methods and offer practical curriculum guides for different grade levels: grades three, five, and six. Additional titles for other K–6 grades are currently in preparation. All books feature maps, photos, and illustrations, many in color.

"A brand-new title in this important series gives parents easy-to-apply methods for helping to educate their children who are starting in the fourth grade. It's a combination manual and advice book, suitable both for parents cooperating with their child's teachers in standard classroom settings, and for home schoolers, where parents take direct control of their child's studies. Making the Grade books are not textbooks, but practical curriculum guides. Written by authorities in elementary education, they advise parents on books, software, and other teaching tools. Each book presents guiding principles for teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Pages are perforated for multipurpose use. Each title in the series contains four curriculum sections:

* Promoting literacy-reading, writing, listening, and speaking

* Math-number patterns, problem solving, and other math-related concepts

* Science-life, earth, and physical sciences

* Social Studies-history, geography, economics, and culture

Each section outlines subject matter to be covered, augmented with planning and implementation strategies for parents and teachers. Advice includes ways to explain difficult concepts to children, suggestions for interactive learning in music and art, activities to promote hands-on learning experiences, and more. Sections titled In Your Community describe ways to integrate local cultural affairs, business activities, environmental concerns, and government functions with a child's education. Though written primarily for parents, this book will appeal to grade four teachers looking for new ideas and methods. It features maps, photos, and illustrations, many in color.

Very good 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I use the flashcards with my baby who is 11 months old. We both like them: they are a good baby-book size with nice, simple, colorful pictures. The cards can be wiped off but are a bit thin for baby's hands - he likes to fold and bend them. On the back side one can see how the hand sign is done, which helps me, and my baby also likes to study this. What I don't like so much is how the cards are grouped by topics in each box and that one cannot tell when ordering online which exact words are inside. I found, for example, that in none of the three boxes I bought, there were verbs such as "eat" or "drink" which are words usually taught early to hearing babies. There is only a small number of flash cards in each box that we actually use. I would have prefered to buy one box with cards geared towards hearing babies that includes the most commonly used signs, instead of purchasing three boxes and only use 5 words from each one. For me it was worth spending the money, though, because those few cards we use every day and enjoy it.

Editorial Review:
