Mindless Twaddle 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

When selecting a language arts curriculum for our child I ordered a copy of "First Language Lessons." After examining the curriculum I returned my copy for a refund. Jessie Wise has taken Emma Serl's books "Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lesson" given them a few twists to create her own book of language lessons. The book consists of mindless twaddle. Wise does not use true "narration" which is having a child repeat back to you in their own words what they have learned. The lessons are monotonuous and have been "dumbed down" from Serl's original text. The poems and stories have been altered to make them "politically correct." Serl's text is a breath of fresh air, engaging the child in language arts with classical literature and poetry. I was quite disappointed in this curriculum as I had expected a higher standard from Jessie Wise. The two language arts curriculums I recommend to parents are Emma Serl's "Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons" and Ambleside Onlines Language Arts Curriculum. Both of these curriculums will serve a student well, giving them a firm foundation in language arts.

Editorial Review:

Parents can assure their child's success in language arts with this simple-to-use, scripted guide. First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind uses picture study and other classical techniques to develop the child's language study in those first two all-important years of school. Each lesson leads the parent, step-by-step, through the simple oral and written projects that build reading, writing, spelling, storytelling, and comprehension skills. Use this book to supplement school learning, or as the center of a home-school language arts course.

Editorial Review:

"When we call someone lazy, we condemn a human being," writes Mel Levine, M.D. In The Myth of Laziness, the bestselling author of A Mind at a Time shows that children dismissed as unproductive or "lazy" usually suffer from what he calls "output failure" -- a neurodevelopmental dysfunction that can continue to cause difficulties into adulthood if left unchecked.

The desire to be productive is universal, says Dr. Levine, but that drive can often be frustrated by dysfunctions that obstruct output or productivity. Drawing on his clinical experience and using real-life examples of both children and adults he has worked with, Dr. Levine shows how to identify and remedy these dysfunctions. A child suffering from language production dysfunction, for example, may be incapable of clearly expressing or explaining his thoughts, thereby leading to low productivity in school. A child who has difficulty making choices may wait until it is too late to complete a project or may act impulsively, creating a pattern of bad judgments. Similarly, a child with memory weaknesses may be unable to draw on his accumulated knowledge for an assignment. In each of these cases, as Dr. Levine shows, writing skills are often the key to diagnosing specific causes of output failure.

Practical, wise, and compassionate, The Myth of Laziness offers parents and teachers day-to-day strategies and support to prevent output failure and, when necessary, to help children overcome dysfunction and become productive, successful adults.

This product is a great idea for those folks who find it difficult to start conversations. Pick one card, and the topic most often leads to another topic, then another. Very handy and entertaining!

Editorial Review:

The Seven Wonders of the World were works of art and architecture that the ancient Greeks and Romans believed were the most extraordinary structures of their time. Of these seven creations, only the oldest one - the pyramids of Egypt - are still standing today. If you could make a list of the seven wonders of today's world, what would go on your list?

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This series of books is fabulous. My husband and I even enjoy reading them. We bought three books in this series ( fourth grade, second and Kindergarten) and all of them are wonderful. The kids really enjoy reading them and they are packed full of information. Every parent should purchase these books for their kids/grandkids.

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

We purchased this book because we wanted to make sure our child was learning everything he needed to be learning at his grade level. It is very user friendly; it is written in such a way that it can be read by the child independently or jointly with a parent or caregiver. Our child actually looks forward to the time each day when we sit down and look at it together, and it has helped supplement and reinforce what he has learned in class. Highly recommend this series. (We have a kindergartner who also insists that we read from the book written for his grade level daily.)

Editorial Review:

Grade by grade, these groundbreaking and successful books provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of a good education for first to sixth graders.

This book will inspire you whether you are a parent, teacher or administrator. Ron is amazing in what he was able to do. He shares many of his strategies/techniques which are fueled by his passion for students to succeed. I am an administrator of a K-8 school and used excerpts from many parts of the book with my staff. The perfect book to ignite you to do the extraordinary!!!

One reason I appreciated his suggestions is that he has effectively used them in one of the toughest teaching environments in the world: Harlem, NY. He's not just preaching here, he's actually gotten his hands dirty and proven the effectiveness of his methods.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, the national bestseller that's changing America, one student at a time fter publishing his New York Times bestseller The Essential 55, award-winning teacher Ron Clark took his rules on the road and traveled to schools in 49 states. He met amazing teachers, administrators, students, parents-all kinds of people involved in bringing up great kids. In the best of them, he noticed the same qualities that he'd observed in many of the outstanding individuals he'd worked with during his time teaching in North Carolina and Harlem.

fantastic resource 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you love reading, you know how valuable literacy is for children. We read stories as a family with our children, ages 3 1/2 & 5. We also enjoy trips to the library and finding new books together. I've watched them grow to love books, and naturally begin to develop language & reading readiness in these early years.

I'm a public school parent, not a homeschooler, but I believed that my kids would love reading if they knew how to do it. So, I invested in this book, and have been very pleased. I wasn't sure how to teach them to read, and wanted to keep enjoying life together without a lot of pressure to teach & learn. The Ordinary Parent's Guide is a great resource for several reasons.

1) it recognizes that most parents don't think of themselves as reading/literacy teachers. It is encouraging, informative, and realistic. I appreciate all of the tips to "if ____ isn't happening, put it away for _____ months and then try again."

2) it is laid out so that you can spend 10 minutes a day without setting up a "classroom" and "homeschooling" your little ones. It uses simple poems, songs, and memory games to make the process fun for everyone. It also uses very inexpensive tools, like index cards, to help teach (no computer games or fancy book series needed).

3) The author understands the value of knowing how to read & the need for kids to love learning. Her lessons help them progress quickly, so they can have early success & build confidence.

4) The exercises work. My older child was already starting to pick up on words, phonics, and sentences in concept, and these exercises helped me give him the tools to take off. He's reading nicely, and soaks up all of the phonics rules like a sponge. My younger child didn't recognize all of the letters yet, though he could sing the A-B-C's. By a couple months in, he knows the letters, but understands the role of vowels & can sound out a few words as he sees them.

It's worth picking up as a resource, or a day-by-day guide of literacy activities at home.

Editorial Review:

A plain-English guide to teaching phonics. Every parent can teach reading—no experts need apply!

Too many parents watch their children struggle with early reading skills—and don't know how to help. Phonics programs are too often complicated, overpriced, gimmicky, and filled with obscure educationalese. The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading cuts through the confusion, giving parents a simple, direct, scripted guide to teaching reading—from short vowels through supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. This one book supplies parents with all the tools they need.

Over the years of her teaching career, Jessie Wise has seen good reading instruction fall prey to trendy philosophies and political infighting. Now she has teamed with dynamic coauthor Sara Buffington to supply parents with a clear, direct phonics program—a program that gives them the know-how and confidence to take matters into their own hands.
