A nice variety of short pieces 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

My students really enjoyed the selections I read to them from the book. It is great resource to have on hand when you've finished your lesson and there is still five minutes left in class. It is also terrific to have for those studyhall kids who never seem to have any work ... toss it to them and say, "Have a look at this." In two minutes, they are silent, usually for the rest of the period.

FANTASTIC STORIES 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a read aloud mom to 4th graders, and each and every story I have read from this book to the class has them CAPTIVATED! I was trying to decide on a favorite, but they are ALL so good!! The book has stories that truly touch your heart. It has fiction and nonfiction, humor, satire, tragedy, biography, short pieces; long pieces. Jim Trealease also does a great job introducing the authors which are stories within themselves. I can't say enough about this book. If you have anyone you wish would read more rather than watch TV, purchase this. It will definitely get their interest, and the students may purchase some of the books after reading one of the interesting chapters, and the life of the author Jim Trelease writes about. The 4th grade class I read to, are asking that very question (what is the name of that book and the author).

Editorial Review:

A selection of writing from various media features newspaper columns by Bob Greene, Mike Royko, and Pete Hamill; articles on sports, popular culture, and other topics; autobiographical sketches by Moss Hart, Maya Angelou, and others; and acclaimed fiction.

Very worthwhile, very constructive 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The pro's: It got right to the heart of the matter and outlined the most common psychological causes of underachievement. It helped to put things in perspective: my child is not a robot that is programmed to perform academically according to my standards, he is a thinking, feeling individual who has his own fears and needs. The book reminded me that it's not all about academic achievement (although that's why I bought the book), the larger issue that is undeniably intertwined is the continued development a loving, constructive relationship with my child and how it affects his ability to accept responsibility.

The con's: Had high hopes when I bought the book, but in the first 40 pages I found myself despairing over what then appeared to be a hopeless situation. Positive testimonials would've been helpful early on. (Parents, push through this part, it gets better.) The 10-step program section had a few examples of his own dialog with students -- additional sample parent-student dialogs would've been VERY helpful in this section.

My experience with this book:
First of all, I was lucky enough to have just finished reading "How to talk to kids so kids will listen, and listen so kids will talk", and it's "sequel" "How to talk so teens will listen." Without those two books, I think we'd still be floundering. (Parents, if you have a strained relationship with your teen, then read both books. I promise, you won't regret it.)
Next, my husband and put the program in place with my two boys. My middle schooler immediately responded positively, he cheerfully does his work and enjoys our nightly discussions. He's very proud of his achievements, he just brought home 3 A's and 2 B's on his report card. My high schooler is a tougher case: he is behaving exactly as the book predicted (very resistant), but I'm seeing some chinks in his armor as he's going through the inevitable, necessary struggle of owning his responsibilities. This last report card period he brought home 3 B's and 2 C's. Not great, but our relationship and his personal development are showing definite signs of improvement.

Overall, it's a tough challenge and requires true commitment on the part of the parents. The author makes no bones about this: "you must understand that it is you, not the child, who will change first." Don't be scared off or discouraged by this. It is the best thing you could do for your child.

Editorial Review:

For any parent who has ever been told, "your child isn't performing up to his or her potential," this book has the answer. Renowned clinical psychologist Michael Whitley, Ph.D. offers a proven ten-step program to motivate underachieving children. This easy-to follow book identifies the six types of underachievers from the procrastinator to the hidden perfectionist to the con artist, and it presents the ten steps to help children succeed in school-and ultimately, in life.

Editorial Review:

A sought-after "packager" of high school students shares highly coveted strategies to help parents get their kids into the country’s most competitive colleges

Did you know? A child’s guidance counselor can help reverse a deferral. A parent can help get a child off a waiting list. And there is a way for students to back out of Early Decision once they’ve been accepted.

Based on the controversial insider information Elizabeth Wissner-Gross has gleaned from working for years as a successful packager of high school students and from interviews with heads of admission at some of the nation’s most competitive colleges, this book helps parents answer questions such as: Can an application be sabotaged by a competing student or parent? How do colleges really know if a student applies to two or more schools for Early Decision? Is it possible to prescreen a teacher’s recommendation? As well as the biggest question of all: Of the tens of thousands of highly qualified students that graduate each year, why should a college choose yours?

Targeting the college-educated parents of today’s college-bound teenagers who seek to gain a proven edge in the highly secretive and seemingly arbitrary college admissions process, What Colleges Don’t Tell You (and Other Parents Don’t Want You to Know) reveals 272 little- known, unconventional, tried-and-true secrets to help parents get their children into the most competitive schools of their dreams.

Common Sense Education 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For those who are disenchanted with the high pressure standardized-testing mentality prevalent in classrooms today, this book explains the educational philosphy of Charlotte Mason. It is God-focused (Susan is the daughter of Christian apologtic Francis Shaeffer), natural, and relaxed. It is a must-read for any classroom teacher, homeschool parent, or school administrator.

Editorial Review:

For the Children's Sake is a book about what education can be--for your child, in your home, and in your school. It is based first on a Christian understanding of what it means to be human--to be a child, a parent, a teacher--and on the Christian meaning of life. At the same time it is deeply practical. Many of the central ideas have been tried and proven true over a century in almost every kind of educational situation. The ideas are in fact so true that they can be applied equally at home, in different schools, in Africa, in the inner city, and in your own community. But they are also ideas which Susan and her husband Ranald Macaulay have tried and proven in their own family and school experience.

So-So...lacks goal examples 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great resource for people new to the IEP world, especially before the first IEP meeting. This manual will give a great introduction into what to expect in the meeting, the jargon, the paperwork, and the placement. This book would also be a good first step if the process gets litigious. It gives the basics on how to file complaints and go through due process.

However, the book is a basic overview of the whole process. I gave it only 3 stars because it is far to general in dealing with formulating goals. Even though there are vastly different goals necessary in every individual's IEP, everyone might benefit by reviewing a wide variety of examples. I would like to see many examples of real life goals for various disabilities using the actual wording, style, jargon, and technique used to indicate the goal and its measurability.

Editorial Review:

The specifics of a special needs child's education are determined together by parents and educators through a process called the Individualized Education Program (IEP), which can be complicated, stressful, and intimidating to parents. THE COMPLETE IEP GUIDE clearly outlines the IEP, how to arrange the best possible program for a child, how to resolve disputes with school districts, and more.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 50 people found this review helpful.

As a former special education teacher, I am sometimes too aware of little problems. I know my child's self-esteem is affected by this problem however, and this book is very helpful for being me to work with her at home, especially since teachers don't seem to think there is a problem. This book, along with "The Gift of Dyslexia" brought so much practical, usefel information. I took this book out from the library, and will buy it, to use for a longer duration at home.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive, practical resource gives educators at all levels essential information, techniques, and tools for understanding dyslexia and adapting teaching methods in all subject areas to meet the learning style, social, and emotional needs of students who have dyslexia. Special features include over 50 full-page activity sheets that can be photocopied for immediate use and interviews with students and adults who have had personal experience with dyslexia. Organized into twenty sections, information covers everything from ten principles of instruction to teaching reading, handwriting, spelling, writing, math, everyday skills, and even covers the adult with dyslexia.

I found this book extremely enjoyable. The selections are very entertaining. Now, I just have to find the time to read the entire book of each selection.

A treasure 5 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful book to read to your children from. My daughters and I each will treasure the bedtime stories that I read to them from this book. Now that they are older they have requested their own copies, hopefully for their own children (I'm keeping my tattered copy for my nights with their children/my grandchildren).

not very intersting 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There are only couple of stories interesting in the whole book. I tried to read them to my 5 and 6 year old kids. They always insisted me to read other story books. I tried to put it into my 6 year old kid's reading list. He talked to me that he would rather read something else.

Editorial Review:

The author of The New Read-Aloud Handbook presents a collection of fifty read-aloud selections from such well-loved tales as Bambi, Charlotte's Web, Ozma of Oz, Ramona the Pest, Where the Red Fern Grows, James and the Giant Peach, and Gentle Ben.

Some good ideas... 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book covers attention games for a wide variety of ages. I was hoping it would have more activities for elementary school age, so that's why I gave it three stars instead of five.

Not quite what I expected 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was looking more for a book of games that involved physical activitity. Those people considering this book should be aware that it is mainly mental activities. This would be a good source for teachers who want something to do in a classroom.

The book has activities for all age groups, though a great deal of it is for very young children.

Editorial Review:

If you want to focus children's attention, you first have to capture their interest. Attention Games is filled with interesting and child-tested activities that can help children of all ages become better at focusing and paying attention. By sharing the upbeat, joyful activities in Attention Games, you can enhance your child's intelligence, boost his confidence, increase his ability to concentrate on one thing for long periods, and show that you care. Developed by Barbara Sher—parent, teacher, play therapy specialist and pediatric occupational therapist—these activities are specially designed to encourage kids to expand their powers of attention in ways that will help them throughout their lives.
