Editorial Review:

Every concerned parent needs to read this book! Through the Cracks addresses one of the most important issues of our time: how youngsters become frustrated and disengaged in school systems that cannot always meet their emotional, mental, and intellectual needs. Presented as a children’s story, with powerful images that literally show the students “shrinking away” from the classroom, this allegory pleads with us to ensure the future of society by keeping kids creatively engaged. A young girl named Stella narrates, and she explains why she has lost pleasure in classwork. The problem: uninspired lessons leave them bored, with wandering minds that hinder learning. Fortunately, there are solutions here: bright and appealing classrooms where kids discuss their work and ideas, where special guests come to share their knowledge, where appealing art and research projects stimulate youthful imaginations, and where nature studies are actually done outdoors.

Invaluable guide on bilingualism 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent and easy to read step-by-step guide for anyone interested in raising children with a second (or multiple) language. It is an invaluable tool for parents and teachers alike. The guide is exceptionally rich in personal narratives and practical advices based on research results and Steiner's personal experience as a mother and pediatrician who raises her own children multilingual. The author demystifies bilingualism and encourages parents to participate in second language education at any child age. If parents do not speak a second language, she suggests for example to incorporate the language experience of the babysitter or others. She inspires to introduce world languages to young and older children as well as to their parents (e.g. to the husband who is not fluent in his wife's first language). One very important point that the author makes is that language is a tool serving the communication.

Having been raised monolingual by my parents in a non-English speaking country, I was introduced to world languages during middle and high school, but at that time I never really used the languages actively, mostly in fear to say something wrong and make mistakes (but still it helped having this basis). After having come to the U.S. at an "older age", I needed to communicate in English which I did not speak or understand fluently. At the same time, I had to raise my children in-between languages. Steiner encourages me that it is perfectly normal when my children (or I) sometimes for example mix a foreign, primary language word into their (or my) dialogue, not because we are "confused", but because that is an easier way of communication and part of a learning process. Thank you, Dr. Steiner, for all your great realistic recommendations.

Editorial Review:

The best time to learn a second language is as a child. This book helps parents in both monolingual and multilingual families determine and achieve bilingual goals for their children.

Two Thumbs Up From The Magazine To Inspire Conscious Parenting & Empowered Kids 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I picked up the book yesterday and couldn't put it down. As publisher of a magazine to inspire conscious parenting and empowered kids, this book reminded me of the importance of helping kids settle down, breath, and connect to the world (and people) around them. It's full practical steps to apply in everyday life but what keeps the pages turning are the personal stories she relates. Some ideas we've heard over and over, such as using breath, movement or touch to soothe, but they serve as great reminders to put them back into our lives. Others are innovative, fun, and simple, such as giving your toddler two nickels to hold on to (one for each hand) to distract them while making a quick stop. Without giving too much away, the book offered a reminder that the way things are isn't necesarily the way they have to be. It IS possible for four 10-year-old boys to be kind, compassionate and gentle with a 4-year-old boy who interrupts their game. Empathy is essential for two humans to connect and understand one another. Empathy is what is lacking within families and in world politics. We started our magazine because we know that it is children who determine the future of the world. With conscious parenting and the ideas presented in this book, our kids have a hope for a more peaceful personal life and world situation.

Editorial Review:

Building on such inherent qualities as openheartedness and trust, parents and teachers can help children develop empathy and integrity as they grow and mature. From nature activities to conscious quiet time to tips on daily routines, CALM AND COMPASSIONATE CHILDREN provides practical guidance to help grown-ups model behavior and suggests dozens of activities to foster children's joy, wonder, kindness, and love.

He's getting it 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

We bought this after my first grader's successful results with the first book. It is systematic, comprehensive, and the language is not overly simplified. The author doesn't condescend to my third grader, a voracious reader who recognizes "dumbed down" speech and writing and is turned off by it. New material is presented in a no-nonsense, sequential manner, and as each new part of speech is studied, it is also diagrammed. My analytical son really likes that. The emphasis on dictation and narration was a useful surprise. I didn't realize he had a tough time summarizing until we encountered these lessons. This book both diagnosed and addressed weaknesses I didn't know he had due to his extremely high reading ability. I'm very pleased with this one. Note: I tried to use the teacher edition only, but it was a hassle. I broke down bought the workbook and it made things much easier.

Editorial Review:

This simple-to-use, scripted guide to grammar and composition makes successful teaching easy—for both parents and teachers.

First Language Lessons, Level 3 uses the classical techniques of memorization, copywork, dictation, and narration to develop your child's language ability in the important first years of study. It is a complete beginning grammar and writing text that covers parts of speech, diagramming sentences, and beginning writing, storytelling, and narration skills.

Excellent advise! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book is worth its weight in gold! I was struggling to get my 8 year-old son to do his homework, and then I found help in this book. It's quick and easy to read, and full of useful suggestions and positive plans to teach your child healthy homework habits. The authors teach that praise and assertive communication are effective tools to motivate your child. They also stress the importance of communication with your child's teacher. Because of the authors' advise, my son now has a dedicated homework area (a desk in his room), and a mandatory homework routine (homework is finished before any TV or video games). The results are that he gets his homework done on time, and with good quality, or he loses privileges for things he enjoys. And guess what? It works. I highly recommend this book for any parent who's tired of the nightly homework battle.

Parents with school-aged children will find in this volume the help they need to create an unstressful learning environment in the home and motivate their youngsters to succeed in school.

Editorial Review:

Does your child have a favorite subject, activity, or hobby? Children learn in multiple ways, and educator Thomas Armstrong has shown hundreds of thousands of parents and teachers how to locate those unique areas in each of our children where learning and creativity seem to flow with special vigor.

In this fully updated classic on multiple intelligences, Armstrong sheds new light on the "eight ways to bloom," or the eight kinds of "multiple intelligences." While everyone possesses all eight intelligences, Armstrong delineates how to discover your child's particular areas of strength among them.

The book shatters the conventional wisdom that brands our students as "underachievers," "unmotivated," or as suffering from "learning disabilities," "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder," or other "learning diseases." Armstrong explains how these flawed labels often overlook students who are in possession of a distinctive combination of multiple intelligences, and demonstrates how to help them acquire knowledge and skills according to their sometimes extraordinary aptitudes.

Filled with resources for the home and classroom, this new edition of In Their Own Way offers inspiration for every learning situation.

Editorial Review:

(2004 iParenting Media Award Winner) Many young children with special needs experience language delays and need additional help to build language skills. What better way to encourage communication development than through play? The completely updated third edition of THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, a perennial favorite of parents, speech-language pathologists, and early interventionists, offers a plan for doing just that.

The new edition presents sixty-five new toys and accompanying toy dialogs to use with children with a wide range of special needs from birth through age six. These sample toy dialogs show parents how to play purposefully with their child--using store-bought and homemade toys--to provide language learning opportunities and stimulate language development. The exercises are fun and educational, too, as parents help their child build receptive language skills (understanding), expressive language skills (communicating), and speech.

THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS is organized by language developmental ages and each section includes:
toy dialogs; numerous photographs; a toy list; a list of suggested vocabulary and communication concepts; children's book bibliography; a checklist to track progress.

In addition, this book provides important background information about language, its sequential development, the causes of language delays, and how play can enhance language development. It also explains the use of videos, DVDs, television, and the computer as language enhancers. The resource lists are extensive, offering toy manufacturers and catalogs, support organizations, children's book information, and suggested materials for homemade toys.

With THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, parents can help their children make gains in their language development and have an enjoyable and rewarding experience while doing it. It's also a great tool for collaboration between parents and professionals.

Editorial Review:

Here the nationally acclaimed educator who transformed the way our children learn to read and write in school shows us how to nurture our children’s imagination at home, from the earliest days of babytalk to the time when we see them off to school. Drawing upon her influential philosophy of active learning, as well as her personal experience as a parent, Calkins shows parents how to stimulate curiosity and spark creative thinking in children. Having an open and creative approach to conversations, chores, and games can matter just as much as reading, writing, and math. And even in traditional skills like reading and writing, we need to encourage our children to read for meaning and write for expression, rather than focus only on mechanics like phonics and spelling.By giving parents new and imaginative techniques for educating children, and by providing them with an insider’s view of what goes on in the early grades, Raising Lifelong Learners creates the ultimate partnership in learning between home and school, parents and teachers.

Skillstreaming in a Middle School 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book while working with a group of middle school students who were lacking social skills. This book provides step by step social skills information directed at the specific deficiencies. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the information I have gathered from reading this book.

Life skills 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

A super book for working with socially challenged youth. High risk kids often get into trouble because they don't possess appropriate social skills, and they are not motivated to practice positive skills. They simply don't see the value. All to often their innappropriate skills have been rewarded in life. This book prepares teachers and adolescent group leaders to develop missing social skills in a step by step well thought out and research proven manner. The book also prepares the leader with great stratagies for recognizing and dealing with trainee/client resistance. Of course in your group you will not experience this. If you really want results and not just feel good discussions with kids this material is state of the art. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

This book is for use with middle and high school students. It shows how to teach 50 prosocial skills such as expressing feelings, apologizing, setting a goal, starting a conversation, and responding to failure. Skills are divided into six areas: Beginning Social Skills, Advanced Social Skills, Dealing with Feelings, Alternatives to Aggression, Dealing with Stress, and Planning Skills.
