Easy to use 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a easy to use book to use with lots of games to play. In keeping with the Montessori way, kids will not know they are learning. As a parent, the games and instructions are easy to follow. The book encourages you to follow the games in sequence, as they build on eachother. I liked that short explanations were given for each game reagrding what it would teach the children. One thing, it does assume having some of the Montessori tools/toys such as sandpaper letters which you can buy or make yourself. But many of the gamse require only you and your kid. Good book, I am moving toward a Montessori house and hope my kids will benefit from it.

Editorial Review:

One of the most important pioneers in the area of child development, Maria Montessori opened the first Children's House in Rome in 1907. Today, there is a network of Montessori schools around the world. This text makes the acclaimed methods used in those schools available to all parents who wish to give their child the best possible start on the road to reading and writing. There are sections on how to create an environment which gives the best chance for language to flourish, the first steps towards reading and writing, and learning to write the letters. This book contains age-graded games and activities to aid learning, and has a resources section designed to be appropriate for different geographical regions and/or languages. It includes a reading list, resources list and suggestion for scripts.

Editorial Review:

(2004 iParenting Media Award Winner) Many young children with special needs experience language delays and need additional help to build language skills. What better way to encourage communication development than through play? The completely updated third edition of THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, a perennial favorite of parents, speech-language pathologists, and early interventionists, offers a plan for doing just that.

The new edition presents sixty-five new toys and accompanying toy dialogs to use with children with a wide range of special needs from birth through age six. These sample toy dialogs show parents how to play purposefully with their child--using store-bought and homemade toys--to provide language learning opportunities and stimulate language development. The exercises are fun and educational, too, as parents help their child build receptive language skills (understanding), expressive language skills (communicating), and speech.

THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS is organized by language developmental ages and each section includes:
toy dialogs; numerous photographs; a toy list; a list of suggested vocabulary and communication concepts; children's book bibliography; a checklist to track progress.

In addition, this book provides important background information about language, its sequential development, the causes of language delays, and how play can enhance language development. It also explains the use of videos, DVDs, television, and the computer as language enhancers. The resource lists are extensive, offering toy manufacturers and catalogs, support organizations, children's book information, and suggested materials for homemade toys.

With THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, parents can help their children make gains in their language development and have an enjoyable and rewarding experience while doing it. It's also a great tool for collaboration between parents and professionals.

Editorial Review:

New York City has some of the best and worst public schools in America and as well as the nation's largest system of choice. As a result, New York City parents are often forced to shop for elementary schools the way parents elsewhere shop for colleges. Clara Hemphill has written a guide that provides parents with everything they need to find a good school in their neighborhood or to apply to the dozens of alternative schools that accept children from outside their immediate neighborhoods. Interviews with teachers and parents uncover the "inside scoop" on schools, including atmosphere, homework, student stress, competition among students, the quality of teachers, the condition of the building, and more. It also provides the hard facts on: Class size and total school enrollment; Test scores for reading and math; Ethnic make up: Black, White, Hispanic, Asian; Admissions requirements: none? tests? interview? Teaching methods and styles: progressive, traditional; When to apply; How to decide which schools to try for

Editorial Review:

In an engaging memoir, award-winning educator, Resa Steindel Brown is drawn to the astonishing discovery that all children are born brilliant. With insightful commentary, she recalls her own trials as a student and teacher in our industrial, one-size-fits-all educational system. Then she encounters the needs of her young son. Finding a fit is like trying to stuff an odd-shaped child into a square hole. The love for her child propels her on a journey that sweeps her own children, and the children around her, into a learning environment driven by joy, exuberance and passion instead of heartbreak and defeat.

Unable to read until ages nine and ten, they entered college at eleven and twelve, became systems administrators, chief technology officers, trained with the Berlin Opera and Hamburg Ballet, created digital images used in the film "Lord of the Rings," presented software solutions to TRW, Pac Bell, Industrial Light & Magic, NSA, Sony, and more, all before the ages of eighteen.

The Call to Brilliance shows parents and educators how to redirect children's challenges into strengths, discover children's interests, fuel their interests into passions, and their passions into brilliance.

Editorial Review:

What is the purpose of education? What kind of people do we want our children to grow up to be? How can we design schools so that students will acquire the skills they'll need to live fulfilled and productive lives?

These are just a few of the questions that renowned educator Dennis Littky explores in The Big Picture: Education Is Everyone's Business. The schools Littky has created and led over the past 35 years are models for reformers everywhere: small, public schools where the curriculum is rich and meaningful, expectations are high, student progress is measured against real-world standards, and families and communities are actively engaged in the educational process.

This book is for both big "E" and small "e" educators:
* For principals and district administrators who want to change the way schools are run.
* For teachers who want students to learn passionately.
* For college admissions officers who want diverse applicants with real-world learning experiences.
* For business leaders who want a motivated and talented workforce.
* For parents who want their children to be prepared for college and for life.
* For students who want to take control over their learning . . . and want a school that is interesting, safe, respectful, and fun.
* For anyone who cares about kids.

Here, you'll find a moving account of just what is possible in education, with many of the examples drawn from the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center ("The Met") in Providence, Rhode Island--a diverse public high school with the highest rates of attendance and college acceptance in the state and a dropout rate of less than five percent. The Met exemplifies personalized learning, one student at a time.

The Big Picture is a book to re-energize educators, inspire teachers in training, and start a new conversation about kids and schools, what we want for both, and how to make it happen.

A teacher's review 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found 'Boys and Girls Learn Differently" to be a useful and fascinating introduction to the general strengths and weaknesses of males and females in the classroom.

Some reviewers may laugh or poke fun at the relatively old ideas that he is presenting as new in the areas of male/female brain differences. These may be old ideas in the biology lab, but someone needs to walk over to the schools of education across the country because the 'tabla rasa' theory (the mind is a blank slate and gender differences are entirely a product of culture, not nature) is alive and still kicking hard.

The only complaint I have is that Gurian refers a lot to seminars and ongoing experiments in school designs that will be helpful in teaching to the strengths and weaknesses of girls and boys. However, he comes up a bit short in providing concrete examples of how to help both boys and girls.

Editorial Review:

A manifesto and programme for teachers and parents on how the fundamental difference between boys and girls affects the way they learn. Using recent scientific research on male and female cerebral anatomy, brain development, and hormonal chemistry, it shows why classroom strategy must change, and makes specific suggestions for techniques and innovations which will provide equal educational opportunities, customised for gender difference.

I have been reading your "The Complete Guide to Service Learning" the last few days. I am teaching teachers tomorrow about the 40 Developmental Assets and integrating Service Learning into their curriculum. Your book is great. It is thorough. It is user friendly and it has great information that is easy to digest. I especially like the "Across the Curriculum" sheets.

Great Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.

It offers countless practical, specific, easy ways for teachers to teach their students new skills and the value of contributing to their community. I would definitely say that this book is a must-read for any teacher or parent!

Easy to Use. Terrific resource! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am an elementary school guidance counselor who wanted to create a service learning program in my school, but wasn't sure how to get it off the ground. This book not only offers service learning project ideas, but also how to tie them to curriculum. It also suggests different fiction and non-fiction literature on the subject by grade level!!!
