Textbook for SPED 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a very valuable textbook. It is very thorough in covering the details about SPED. It is a little liberal.

Good coverage, LOTS of typos! 3 out of 5 stars.

Though this book is a great introduction to special education, I was surprised by the number of technical errors and typos it contained. I'd say I found at least 2-3 in each chapter! Certainly this doesn't affect the quality of the information, but when I read a textbook (particularly when I pay as much as I did for this one), I expect a thoroughly professional presentation. I was quite unimpressed with whoever did the text editing for this book. I also hate books that have lots of margin notes (the kind that are meant to act as a 'quick find' tool), extra text boxes, etc. - it makes it much more difficult to read sequentially.

This book was a required text for my class in Special Education. It was an easy read. It also provided a lot of good information.

Bought 10th edn from Amazon. Realized pages 482 - 514 were missing just two days before the test. Called Pearson (publisher). They were absolutely unaccommodating. Then called Amazon, who replaced the book by next day delivery.

Amazing Text 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This text is spectacular. This edition is a triumph. I was a bit dubious when the forward obliquely compared this book to The Beatles (The White Album), but have become more sympathetic to the perspective as I have spent more time with it. Cooper/Heron is simply the book to use in studying Applied Behavior Analysis. It's not chummy or dated like some texts of 70s (an effort to reduce the response effort of learning the material, no doubt). Instead it is complete, precise and well written. My sincere thanks to the authors. Worth twice the going price.

Great value 5 out of 5 stars.

I decided to buy this product online as my college was charging 90 that means even after the delivery charges I saved around 30. The book arrived in perfect condition despite travelling from USA to Ireland. I am very happy with the service and products from Amazon.

A laugh a minute! 5 out of 5 stars.

Just kidding. This is a clear, concise text that I am finding to be very user-friendly. This text is not nearly as difficult to understand as Michael's Concepts and Principles of Behavior Analysis, at least for someone like myself who is fairly new to behavior analytic textbooks.

Terrible Text Book 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This text book was required for a graduate course that I took towards obtaining my special education license. It uses racist sterotypes, unfounded statements, and shows why ignorance continues to permeate American schools. Much of the information is repeated throughout the book and I find it a waste of time. I strongly suggest finding an alternative source of information.

Great course text 4 out of 5 stars.

Easy read, very informative, case studies idea for getting a better, overall understanding of subject(s). In depth info on legal issues are a plus. A must read for anyone in or considering a career in the special ed field.

Special Education Textbook 2 out of 5 stars.

The book is great. Easy to read content about the introducation to teaching special education. The cd/dvd did not work on two bundles that I ordered. In my class 50% of the students also bought this book and the dvd didn't work at all.

Eye opening 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I needed this book for a class I was taking. WOW!, it was a real eye-opener. As it was really hard to read because it is sad. How amazing that there are schools here in the United States that are in dire need. I would reccomend it, but be prepared to cry.

Must Read 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Kozol's Savage Inequalities paints a frightening picture of urban schools in the United States. He describes schools that are overcrowded, dilapidated, and flooded with sewage. He asks why we allow our children to go to schools in conditions where none of us would choose to work. He deeply explores the issue of inequality in funding. While he does suggest equalizing funding, he is careful to mention that the problems facing schools are complex and require innovative solutions. I know many teachers have read this book, but we need policymakers and elected officials to read it as well.

Editorial Review:

National Book Award-winning author Jonathan Kozol presents his shocking account of the American educational system in this stunning New York Times bestseller, which has sold more than 250,000 hardcover copies.

A must for everybody 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who comes in contact with a person on the autism spectrum should read this book. It is a quick and easy read with the ten characteristics clearly stated and easily understood. The suggestions are concise and to the point. Every teacher should have this as a resource and it should be a mandatory read. Having taught children with autism has been a privilege and reading a parent's perspective has reminded me of that once again.

Practical ASD suggestions 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has some wonderful suggestions for teachers and parents of children on all levels of the autism spectrum. Rather than focusing on high- or low-functioning children, all levels are considered. All kids on the spectrum are accounted for-not just autism. Parents of children with PDD-NOS and Asperger Syndrome can find good tips, too.

Some ideas seem obvious and sound like they'd be great for any child, other ideas aren't so obvious. But almost every idea is simple and can be quickly integrated into raising a child. One suggestion is to make an edible play dough (for which she gives two recipes), for the kid who can't stop putting things in their mouths.

For our family, the best suggestion was one that, like many others, I read and thought "How did I not think of this earlier?" They suggest telling the child how much water they are going to pour on his head at bathtime. I started doing this with my son. Immediatly, the fits stopped. He still hates it, but we don't have to end bathtime and give him 10 minutes to calm down afterwords now. Another good one-demonstrate everything you're going to do to a child beforehand. This worked for us when it was haircut time. It no longer sounds like we're torturing our son once a month!

This is a very valuable book to add to a parent or teacher's toolbox.

Editorial Review:

In a snappy, can-do format, 1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders offers page after page of try-it-now solutions that have worked for thousands of children grappling with social, sensory, behavioral, and self-care issues, plus many more.

Editorial Review:

The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger's syndrome (AS). It brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults.

Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood's extensive clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. Chapters examine: causes and indications of the syndrome; the diagnosis and its effect on the individual; theory of mind; the perception of emotions in self and others; social interaction, including friendships; long-term relationships; teasing, bullying and mental health issues; the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills; and career development.

There is also an invaluable frequently asked questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools.

Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition.

Are You Guilty of Commiting an -ism? 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 44 people found this review helpful.

If you are white, you need to read this book to find out how evil your are. Then, you can begin deconstructing your whiteness.

If you are a person of color, you need to read this book to find out how helpless you are. Those evil crackers have been oppressing you, and you didn't even know it. It's time to get angry and play identity politics. You are not an individual, but the member of a tribe.

Gender, race and class determine everything from how you butter your toast in the morning to the direction the wind is blowing on any given day. I swear.

I read this book on my way to getting a California teaching credential and, while reading it, underwent an epiphany of Krakatoan proportions: We have met the enemy, and he is us.

Now go forth and conquer your -isms and everybody else's. You'll find that the feeling of moral superiority is quite heady. Ciao.

Editorial Review:

The first reader to cover the scope of oppressions in America, Readings for Diversity and Social Justice covers six thematic issues: racism, sexism, Anti-Semitism, heterosexism, classism, and ableism. The reader contains a mix of short personal and theoretical essays as well as entries designed to challenge students to take action to end oppressive behavior and to affirm diversity and racial justice. Each thematic section is broken down into three divisions: Contexts; Personal Voices; and Next Steps and Action. The selections include over 90 essays from some of the foremost names in the field-bell hooks, Cornel West, Michael Omi, Iris Marion Young, Gloria AnzaldĂșa, Michelle Fine, Gloria Steinem, Richard Rodriguez, Beverly Daniel Tatum, Michael Kimmel, Patricia Hill Collins and many other distinguished scholars.

What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action

Any school in the United States can operate at advanced levels of effectiveness-if it is willing to implement what is known about effective schooling. "If we follow the guidance offered from 35 years of research," says author Robert J. Marzano, "we can enter an era of unprecedented effectiveness for the public practice of education." In What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action, Marzano synthesizes that research to provide clear and unequalled insight into the nature of schooling.

Marzano defines the factors affecting student achievement and offers compelling answers to once-elusive questions:

* How can schools set academic goals that do not underestimate student potential? * How critical are staff collegiality and professional development? * Do all students have equal opportunity to learn given current curriculum requirements? * Supplemental versus required content-is there room for redefinition? * What types of parental and community involvement make a real difference? * What instructional strategies really work? * What influence can an individual teacher have on students? * How can teachers manage classrooms that promote positive student-and-teacher relationships? * How can teachers structure their curricula to better sequence and pace content? * Can teachers really overcome a student's negative home environment? * How does an understanding of motivation theories help students and teachers overcome learning obstacles? * What specific learning strategies can enhance learned intelligence and background knowledge?

In each chapter, Marzano recommends specific-and attainable-action steps to implement successful strategies culled from the wealth of research data.

Schools can and do affect student achievement. In his latest work, Marzano leads the way in establishing positive approaches that can make the long-held dream of effective public education a reality.

For learning about ABA and relating to school you cannot beat this book... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My title states it all. The 7th edition trumps the phenomenal 6th edition in it's inclusion of IDEA 2004/NCLB concepts. It is well worth the price difference between this book and most ABA books.

Editorial Review:

@COURSE = For the basic Behavior Management course. Scholarly and empirically-based, this market-leading book gives readers what they need to know to understand and use the principles and practices of applied behavioral management in the classroom. The content is presented clearly, in a friendly, accessible—even fun—manner. Chapters flow, step-by-step, through an actual behavior analysis, using classroom-based examples and practices firmly grounded in research. Content is presented in the order of decision-making by: 1) a teacher who has a student exhibiting challenging behavior in class; or, 2) a student who needs to execute a behavior-change project. This book covers: identifying target behavior, collecting and graphing data, experimental design, arranging antecedents and consequences, and generalizing behavior change. For professionals in the fields of teaching and behavior management.
