Enlightening! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is jam packed with information about NLD. It's a page turner for those of you who need this very important information about your NLD child. Marcia has delved into areas of this difficult disability with a vengence, and has come up with some wonderfully positive solutions. I learned so much about NLD, that I highly recommend it to anyone that needs to learn more about the problems and solutions for a child with this frustrating disability.

Editorial Review:

Raising NLD Superstars is essential reading for all those who come in to contact with children with non-verbal learning disorders (NLD). Instead of insisting upon the one size fits all model of intervention, the author focuses on the individual nature of NLD children and offers practical, adaptable advice that will help them find their place both in the family and in wider social groups.
The author shares her experiences of life as the parent of a child with NLD with humanity and humor. She looks not only at day to day practicalities such as making meal times easier for all the family and reaching compromises on inappropriate clothing choices but also at the long-term plan for independence. The book will help parents and carers to support children with NLD to reach their emotional and cognitive potential while taking into account the views and experiences of other family members.

"Miracles can happen for the most hopeless lost causes" 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am also the mother of a "Special Needs" child; I happened to discover "Twilight Children", Torey Hayden's most recent book by chance in a local bookstore. I was spellbound and couldn't put it down, and when I had read that book, I ordered everything else she ever wrote from Amazon (how's that for a recommendation?). This book, (and I say this without exaggeration) literally made me gasp at some parts and cry at some others. This is a book that I feel would be of value to parents of special needs children, but also to members of Alcoholics Anonymous, or anyone who believes (or wants to believe) that miracles can still happen to the most hopeless of "lost causes".

Editorial Review:

Just Another Kid

Torey Hayden faced six emotionally troubled kids no other teacher could handle-three recent arrivals from battletorn Northern Ireland, badly traumatized by the horrors of war; eleven-year-old Dirkie, who only knew of life inside an institution; excitable Mariana, aggressive and sexually precocious at the age of eight; and seven-year-old Leslie, perhaps the most hopeless of all, unresponsive and unable to speak.

With compassion, rare insight, and masterful storytelling, teacher Torey L. Hayden once again touches our hearts with her account of the miracles that can happen in her class of "special" children.

I am very happy with the price as well as the fast shipping. My University campus book store wanted twice the amount of money for this book; worst of all, it was used. Amazon had it for half the money; best of all, it was brand new. :) I am a happy camper...

This is probably the best book I have read on classroom management--EVER! Not only is it well-written, it is timeless, useable, accessible and friendly. The author readily includes her own classroom successes and failures, which helps me to identify with her journey. She also give practical, ready to implement steps and routines. Is classroom managment difficult? YES! Is is do-able--YES YES YES if you follow the guidelines given here by Ms. Charney. Combine this with a Responsive Classroom workshop, or at least books from the RC library, and you are on your way to loving your job again!

Editorial Review:

This definitive work about classroom management will show teachers how to turn their vision of respectful, friendly, academically rigorous classrooms into reality. Chapter after chapter offers no-nonsense steps that will help teachers move from inspiration to implementation.

Very Informative, useful, and fun. An excellent guide! 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This book is a quick and enjoyable read. The content is very easy to understand. Through the use of humor and skill testing questions, Mager has made learning fun! As a student, I survived many of the poorly written objectives that Mager describes in this book. It was nice to realize I wasn't the problem...the objectives were! I look forward to using this guide to develop clear, concise objectives so students can focus more on the joy of learning and be more successful at it.

A Trainer's Necessity 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Written by the patron saint of trainers everywhere, Robert Mager provides a quick, humorous and easy-to-understand read in what is the heart and soul of training--objectives.

This book offers the readers choice solutions or answers. The reader then turns to the page choice to see if she selected the right choice or not.

Another essential about this book is besides being less than an afternoon read, it is essential to review time and again when you are writing instructional objectives.

Buying this should be one of your objectives!

Editorial Review:

Before you prepare instruction, it's important to be able to clearly state what the desired outcomes of that instruction should be. In Preparing Instructional Objectives, you'll learn the characteristics of well-stated objectives, how to derive suitable objectives, and how to write objectives to match the instructional results you are seeking to achieve.

Excellent (Full of Activities) 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Great for preschoolers with autism who are low to high functioning. You will come away with a least 5 new play activites here that will always work.

Intro to RDI 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book gives excellent advice to parents on ways for parents to help their autistic child develop socially. The principles are laid out clearly and activity descriptions are easy to follow. Unfortunately, for us, the beginner activities are nearly all too difficult for my child. As the book makes the objectives for each activity clear, parents can, if necessary, invent easier activities to meet them. I would recommend it but I understand the authors no longer do, saying that RDI has moved on since its publication and that the book no longer represents what RDI is about.

Editorial Review:

Friendship, even for the most able, requires hard work, and the odds are heavily stacked against those with autism spectrum disorders. Designed for younger children, typically between the ages of two and eight, this comprehensive set of activities emphasizes foundation skills such as social referencing, regulating behavior, conversational reciprocity and synchronized actions. The authors include over 300 objectives to plan and evaluate a child's progress, each one related to a specific exercise. Suitable for parental use, the manual is also designed for easy implementation in schools and in therapeutic settings. A comprehensive website acts as companion to the book, free to purchasers.

Editorial Review:

Autism is a word most of us are familiar with. But do we really know what it means? Children with autism are challenged by the most essential human behaviors. They have difficulty interacting with other people - often failing to see people as people rather than simply objects in their environment. They cannot easily communicate ideas and feelings, have great trouble imagining what others think or feel, and in some cases spend their lives speechless. They frequently find it hard to make friends or even bond with family members. Their behavior can seem bizarre. Education is the primary form of treatment for this mysterious condition. This means that we place important responsibilities on schools, teachers and children's parents, as well as the other professionals who work with children with autism. With the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975, we accepted responsibility for educating children who face special challenges like autism. While we have since amassed a substantial body of research, researchers have not adequately communicated with one another, and their findings have not been integrated into a proven curriculum. "Educating Children with Autism" outlines an interdisciplinary approach to education for children with autism. The committee explores what makes education effective for the child with autism and identifies specific characteristics of programs that work. Recommendations are offered for choosing educational content and strategies, introducing interaction with other children, and other key areas. This book examines some fundamental issues, including: how children's specific diagnoses should affect educational assessment and planning; how we can support the families of children with autism; features of effective instructional and comprehensive programs and strategies; how we can better prepare teachers, school staffs, professionals, and parents to educate children with autism; and what policies at the federal, state, and local levels will best ensure appropriate education, examining strategies and resources needed to address the rights of children with autism to appropriate education. Children with autism present educators with one of their most difficult challenges. Through a comprehensive examination of the scientific knowledge underlying educational practices, programs, and strategies, "Educating Children with Autism" presents valuable information for parents, administrators, advocates, researchers, and policy makers.

School Use 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The book itself was ok, but what I bought it for was to use it during school time and it didn't have much to use at school. What I needed was social stories I could use with my students at school situations. For home and outside of school there was some great social stories but not enough for me.

social stories carol grey 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

this book has relevant stories for the appropriate disorder and I expected it to be useful for the child in mind. However in my case it was the child who decided whether it was useful or not. He has no interest in them at all. They're boring is his comment--he's 5--and refuses to participate. what he would prefer is the 'real' book--far more colourful and exciting.Maybe some colour graphics would make them more appealing.I purchased them as they were recommended by our psychologist.
Jacinta O'Reilly

Editorial Review:

Carol Gray's social stories have been used all over the world to teach social and life skills to children on the autism spectrum. Taking the form of short narratives, the stories in My Social Stories Book take children step-by-step through basic activities such as brushing your teeth, taking a bath and wearing a safety belt in the car. These stories are written for preschoolers aged 2-6 and form a useful primer for non-autistic as well as autistic children.

My Social Stories Book contains almost 200 stories, arranged in sets, and is illustrated throughout with line drawings by Sean McAndrew.

Great summer activity project! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I stumbled upon this book while looking for resources on NLD (nonverbal learning disorder), which has caused my bright, 12-year-old son to flounder both academically and socially since fourth grade. It is FULL of excellent activities for children who have difficulty picking up social cues and interacting appropriately with their peers. Because my son works so hard during the regular school year, and typical summer programs and camps only cause him anxiety, we now opt to let him just take time off from organized activity during his summer breaks. But he will be assisting in the family home business, and now we plan to incorporate the exercises in this book into his daily schedule. They are interesting and fun, and even I look forward to working on them.
