Required reading for any child "labeled" ADD or ADHD or any Teacher! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is incredible. All of my child's teachers wanted me to drug her to keep her in their style of learning "box". After reading this book, I found many tips and tricks to deal with her visual learning style and also it helped me to realize just how special she is!! It can be difficult raising a child who has been labeled ADHD but this book makes you realize how luck you are to have such a special child and that it isn't a bad thing, it's just different!

This book should be required reading for ALL teachers and administrators!!

Required Reading 5 out of 5 stars.

I was treated to a presentation at our school by Mr. Freed. I was so moved by his eloquent explanations of children I see every day in my classroom, year after year. I am a middle school teacher who is presented with children who for years have been misunderstood, and untaught because of a lack of knowledge concerning their abilities, not disabilities. Simply understanding the concept of a right-brained child is tremendously insightful for any teacher, but should be required reading for any teacher of language arts and math. It has opened my eyes, mind and heart to my astounding students.

Editorial Review:

Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World offers a step-by-step program that shows parents how to work with, not against, the special abilities of the ADD child. Radio drive-time tour.

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I became interested in this method of schooling the first time I ever read about it. I had yanked my four year old son from his preschool program because he had gone from a normal happy preschooler to a biting, kicking, swearing little monster. He also has a speech delay, which did not help matters at all because we could not understand what he was talking about when he tried to tell us what was happening during his day.

His father and I decided to homeschool him until he's six, upon which time we will enroll him with the local charter school. So I started researching different methods and the first time I saw this I fell in love. But my heart sank when I saw just how expensive the equipment is. I was also dissapointed when I discovered that we have a local Montessori school only to find out it cost more than we make in a month. My husband is a full time student on a very low, limited income. I could not in good concious sanction spending that kind of money. So I read everything, online and books, that I could get my hands on. And while all I read talked of the different methods, it never said how to implement them.

I saw this at Paperback Swap (awesome site) and snagged it on impulse. I am so glad that I did. It gave me everything I needed to get a start. It helped me understand the resources I already had and told me how to pull them together in a cohesive whole. I have four children ranging from 8 months - 4.5 years. The three oldest think it's great and they are so proud of themselves every day. Even my husband got in on it and helped me construct several items. We both love this book and I reccomend it to everyone that talks about teaching Montessori.

I also reccomend Seven Times the Sun: Guiding Your Child Through the Rhythms of the Day by Shea Darian

Learning with YOUR purpose in mind -- not your parents', not your teacher's, not your school's

Every day, your school, your teachers, and even your peers draw lines to
measure and standardize intelligence. They decide what criteria make one person smart and another person stupid. They decide who will succeed and who will just get by. Perhaps you find yourself outside the norm, because you learn differently -- but, unlike your classmates, you have no system in place that consistently supports your ability and desire to learn. Simply put, you are considered lazy and stupid. You are expected to fail.

Learning Outside the Lines is written by two such "academic failures" -- that is, two academic failures who graduated from Brown University at the top of their class. Jonathan Mooney and David Cole teach you how to take control of your education and find true success -- and they offer all the reasons why you should persevere. Witty, bold, and disarmingly honest, Learning Outside the Lines takes you on a journey toward personal empowerment and profound educational change, proving once again that rules sometimes need to be broken.

I got this book for a class. It worked great. The book was clean and brand new. Thanks!

Great book BUT don't make the same mistake I did... 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the most helpful texts that I have purchased in the past year. It is easy to read and gives lots of examples as well as many points to ponder. HOWEVER, (if it matters to you)- make sure that you do not get the BOOK ALONE version. There is an online component that you need an access code to, which doesn't come with the book unless you buy the other version (I believe it said "with myeducationlab" in the item description). As a matter of fact, it's cheaper that way by about $8.00 believe it or not. I had to buy access separately because I waited too long to return the one that I bought which was book alone. I guess you have to live and learn... I hope someone benefits from my mistake!

Wasn't what I was looking for 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I read this book with a group of teachers as part of our book club. I had high hopes that it would provide some great discussion. After the first few chapters nobody liked it. Out of the 8 of us that read it, not one of us actually enjoyed the book. There were some good points, but too philisophical for our taste.

Editorial Review:

"This book is for teachers who have good days and bad -- and whose bad days bring the suffering that comes only from something one loves. It is for teachers who refuse to harden their hearts, because they love learners, learning, and the teaching life."
- Parker J. Palmer [from the Introduction]

Teachers choose their vocation for reasons of the heart, because they care deeply about their students and about their subject. But the demands of teaching cause too many educators to lose heart. Is it possible to take heart in teaching once more so that we can continue to do what good teachers always do -- give heart to our students?

In The Courage to Teach, Parker Palmer takes teachers on an inner journey toward reconnecting with their vocation and their students -- and recovering their passion for one of the most difficult and important of human endeavors.

Editorial Review:

The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it.

This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child.

This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

A very challenging book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I really appreciated this book. Ayers is very passionate about a teacher's responsibility to help their students become complete human beings. Reading this book, and Grant Wiggins Understanding by Design, in a graduate class renewed my passion for teaching, which is really a passion for learning. Education should be about the big questions of life, not just the details and basic skills that are tested and required by the state and federal government.

Ayers is committed to developing whole and complete human beings, not automatons.

My only issue is with his emphasis on social justice as the focus of education. While I agree that a concern for social justice will emerge in people who think for themselves, it seems as if his recommendations force this concern on kids a little too heavyhandedly. If we are to be independent, complete people, then naturally what concerns us will not always be the same. Nevertheless, his emphasis is better than many who want us to just teach kids to read words and add and subtract, but don't really care if they can think for themselves.

Editorial Review:

The story of one teacher's odyssey into the ethical and intellectual heart of teaching, and at the same time an invitation to teachers to more thoughtfully and carefully map their own pathways. In conceptual and practical ways, To Teach narrates an essential journey all teachers must take if, at the end of their own Yellow Brick Roads, they are to achieve the basics: a heart, a brain, the nerve, and a home.

Aspergers Syndrome Emotional difficulties 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

An excellent book, good practical advice. A must for anyone involved with teaching a child with Aspergers Syndrome. The first few chapters breakdown in simple talk what Aspergers People have the most difficulties with. It points out the areas that are considered "normal" for Aspergers syndrome, and that your child is not the only child having these difficulties. I found this particularly useful to show to teachers and principals who are either too busy or lack the inclination to learn about the Syndrome.

The next part of the book explains the rage process, what to look out for, where the teaching zones are and where it is best left until the child has calmed down.

The latter stage of the book gives solutions to the issues that result in Tantrums and meltdowns.

A must for anyone teaching Aspergers children and a great help to parents.

Editorial Review:

This long-awaited expanded edition of this bestselling book offers parents and professionals alike true-and-tried solutions to minimize and circumvent the often frightening circumstances that surround the rage cycle – for the child with Asperger Syndrome as well as others in the environment. In addition to almost doubling the section on interventions, this highly practical and user-friendly must-have resource also focuses on the behaviors and reactions of the adults around the child going through the stages of the rage cycle and emphasizes the importance of utilizing the teachable moments before and after a rage episode.

Editorial Review:

Candid, passionate, personal, and heartbreakingly funny, a view from within the whirlwind of parenting a child with special needs

Three years ago, magazine editor Denise Brodey’s precocious four-year-old son, Toby, was diagnosed with a combination of sensory integration dysfunction and childhood depression. As she struggled to make sense of her new, often chaotic, often lonely world, what she found comforted her most was talking with other harried, hopeful, and insightful parents of kids with special needs, learning how they coped with the feelings they encountered throughout the day.

In The Elephant in the Playroom, moms and dads from across the country write intimately and honestly about the joyful highs and disordered lows of raising children who are "not quite normal." Laying bare the emotional, medical, and social challenges they face, their stories address issues ranging from if and when to medicate a child, to how to get a child who is overly sensitive to the texture of food to eat lunch. Eloquent and honest, the voices in this collection will provide solace and support for the millions of parents whose kids struggle with ADD, ADHD, sensory disorders, childhood depression, Asperger’s syndrome, and autism—as well as the many kids who fall between diagnoses.

Offering readers comfort, community, and much-needed perspective, The Elephant in the Playroom is sure to become essential reading for parents of special needs kids.
