Superb character development 5 out of 5 stars.

The underground man is the best-developed character I have come across. A reader can take what they want from this book. Everyone's reaction will vary. I'm sure there are people who won't enjoy it but I can not imagine anyone not finding it thought-provoking

"I AM A SICK MAN...I am a wicked man." 5 out of 5 stars.

Brilliant...

One of my favorite Dostoevsky books!

It's a short tale that explores the neurotic mind.

From the first line...
"I AM A SICK MAN...I am a wicked man."

This work is a painfully honest fictional exploration into the human heart.

Notes From Underground 5 out of 5 stars.

Notes From Underground is a difficult but immensely gratifying and important read.
Critics tend to refer to the Underground Man as a 'Mad Genius'; I beg to differ. He is the epitome of the average thinking human albeit with a shocking amount of self awareness. The Underground Man seems to be aware of the delusions he brings upon himself and the the facade he puts on in front of society. In the end, it is that self awareness that makes him better than the rest of us; but only marginally.
Compulsory reading for anyone who appreciates existentialist literature and despite what you think, the book is ultimately quite uplifting.

Editorial Review:

Passionate confessions from a tormented soul are the meat of this first of Dostoevsky's books. A minor official brutally scrutinizes himself and decides to go "underground," away from society. This is a strange account of a man relentless in his examination of the world and his own soul, but it is also occasionally comical.

A spoonful of humor helps the material go down 5 out of 5 stars.

We love the "Dummies" series for their humor and easy-to-understand qualities. What good is a prep book if your mind wanders due to boredom? My son felt this book helped him understand the subjects better than his high school classes did. After thoroughly reviewing each subject, the book had two practice tests with complete explanations in the next chapter. This really helped my son prepare for and do well on the ACT. We highly recommend it.

"Native Son": A Polemic On the Poverty of the Poor 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Indeed, Richard Wright's "Native Son" is a polemic about what happens to the poor who are impovished by the psychic chain of economic poverty coupled with rascism and class discrimination. Often I am thinking about black life and I am reminded of Bigger's mantra, "I didn't want to kill." And yet he did and many have and, sadly enough, as Wright suggests, it is after the killings that the Biggers of the world find a piece of their own humanity. The question is, thus, this: Does a death compell one to be human? I wonder what Wright would say?In the Sanctuary of a South

Wright is right 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Richard Wright's America is still here. July, 2008- events of today could be taken from this novel or his short stories.

Editorial Review:

Not often is a black man the protagonist in American literature, but in Native Son, there is fiery, dramatic conflict in the story of Bigger Thomas, the man who wages a war between himself and the outside white world. Wright has given us a dramatic and impassioned look at life in the oppressed Black America.

I bought this book because I wasnt quite sure where to start with my essays. The year before I felt my personal essay was lacking and I didnt get into graduate school. This year with the advice the book gave as well as a jumping point to start my essay's, I was accepted to 8 out of 9 graduate schools where I applied and chose to go to the number 2 school for my field! This book is worth looking at if you dont know where to start with your essays. You need to remember that other people are looking at it which is giving them the edge up so if you arent looking at it yours will just be boring!

Editorial Review:

Veteran higher-education consultant Donald Asher demystifies the graduate school application process and offers a detailed action plan that has proved successful for some of the most competitive programs in the country. The 50 sample essays--selected from thousands of candidates--showcase the best of the best, while the Essay Hall of Shame identifies common pitfalls to avoid. Keeping It Sad And Simple 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Walking through middle school corridors, I'd spy kids in the grade above mine carrying John Steinbeck's "The Pearl" and think them lucky. Judging from the cover it was some kind of sea adventure, probably involving sharks and Jacqueline Bisset. This was back in the 1970s, and I was obviously confused.

Flash forward to the present. Feeling nostalgic, I decide to take the book on after years of wondering. It was certainly short, and Steinbeck is a classic writer, so it seemed a good idea.

A terse morality play about the pitfalls of materialism and the depravity of man, "The Pearl" is clearly a think piece rather than a conventional novel focused on characters and storyline. It made me think, too: However bad middle school was, it could have been worse.

Kino is a poor Mexican Indian who lives off the meager pearls he finds swimming for oysters in the Gulf. One day, desperate for a miracle as his infant son squirms from a scorpion bite, he finds the largest pearl anyone has ever seen, large as a gull's egg and jet black. Kino sees a brighter future for himself and his family, but the jealous villagers and the plutocratic pearl buyers conspire to keep him in his place.

"The pearl has become my soul", Kino tells his wife, who begs him to get rid of it before someone gets hurt. "If I give it up I shall lose my soul."

Steinbeck does nothing to make you care about Kino, his soul, or his wife and child, other than relate their poverty. They aren't people with personalities, but constructs designed to trot out points Steinbeck wants to make. Published in 1947, when socialism was fashionable and Steinbeck a recognized purveyor of the worker ideal, "The Pearl" might pass as a message about the folly of wealth and the value of living within one's means. Yet Kino and his family are clearly living below any decent standard. Collectivist comradeship may be the hallmark of socialist society, but the village Kino lives in is full of thieves and cheats.

As the novel moves slowly on to a finale obvious from the midpoint of the book, one wonders what Steinbeck is trying to say. "The Pearl" is not supposed to be just a story, it's so unsatisfying in that department its clear the Bard of Salinas had other fish to fry. But what?

You are left in the end not really knowing. As a classroom exercise, I guess it can provide some lively discussions if the teacher isn't too much of a tool. There's bits of good Steinbeck prose here and there, like his description of a watering hole where cats take their prey and lap water "through their bloody teeth" and the last image of the pearl itself, which captures a sense of otherworldly menace quite unexpected from this otherwise realist story. As an account of cruel nature, it works in a reductivist way.

But I can't see it as a "classic" in the same sense as other Steinbeck novels I've read. It's no "Grapes Of Wrath". Maybe because it's short it makes for a more popular scholastic reading assignment than "Grapes Of Wrath". But "The Pearl" is no easy read, nor is it satisfying.

Editorial Review:

A book of great beauty and simplicity, The Pearl can be appreciated on an aesthetic, ecological, or sociological vein. This is a story about a great pearl, a Mexican community, and great dreams and powers in a novel of largesse and quiet profundity.

One of two great resources for improving your SAT Math Score 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I'm an SAT tutor that actually takes the SAT three times a year. This is a great book and I wish all my students had the discipline to use it. The complaint from the other SAT tutor is not relevant to the objective of raising your score (which if you are scoring in the 500's can easily go up 100 points if you use this book in conjunction with the eight practice tests in the College Board Official Study Guide). This book remediates your math skill weaknesses which is the first step in preparing for the SAT math section. Once completed, (just the sections you are weak or rusty in)then dive into the eight practice tests in the College Board book which combine math reasoning with math skill. My other favorite resource for my students is Acing the New SAT I Math by Greenhall Publishing---an excellent resource to use by itself or in combination with Barron's. It's actually more comprehensive than Barron's and ideal for the student that is looking for a challenge and a score over 650. I would do the Barron's book first and then the Acting the New SAT I Math for each math section. Have fun!

Editorial Review:

Revised to reflect the newly structured math section on the SAT, the new edition of this workbook offers students intensive preparation for the test’s all-important math questions. The author suggests special math strategies to help students approach unfamiliar types of questions and come up with correct answers. Exercises include hundreds of multiple-choice questions and “grid-in” questions with worked-out solutions, plus a new focus on third-year college preparatory math topics.
