This book tells you about men in high position on the down low 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't believe that there are so many black famous men on the down low that act so hard, but soft like butter lol.

Editorial Review:

Everyone wants to know the truth about their favorite celebrities' heart's desire. Within the masculine culture of Hip Hop and Hollywood, there is a well-known gay subculture that industry insiders are keenly aware of but choose to hide. Terrance Dean worked his way up for more than ten years in the entertainment industry from intern to executive, and has lived the life of glitz and bling along with Hollywood and Hip Hop's most glamorous. With a family full of secrets and working in an industry founded on maleness -- where one's job, friendships, and reputation all depend on remaining on the down low and in hiding -- Dean writes a revealing account of the journey of coming out from hiding.

Full of startling anecdotes and incredible true stories, Hiding in Hip Hop is not a traditional tell-all. A personal and poignant memoir, it is also one of the most provocative and honest looks at stardom and sexuality.

A practical and insightful guide for all people of faith 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

When I purchased this book, I did so thinking that I would give it a perfunctory read and then pass it along to one of my GLBT friends. I soon found much of my own story in Chellew-Hodge's words. Bulletproof Faith is an invaluable resource, not just for gay and lesbian Christians, but any person of faith who has struggled to make peace with The Divine and the world around them. Be Bulletproof.

Life-changing 5 out of 5 stars.

Prior to reading this book I was a discouraged gay Christian. As much as I wanted to believe God loved me, I always felt ashamed and guilty about being gay. When I saw this book I had to read to read it and I was not disappointed. I can honestly say this book has changed my life and I am forever grateful for it. I feel empowered, positive and renewed in my faith. Should be required reading for all gay (and straight) Christians!

Editorial Review:

This thoughtful, practical guide shows readers a way through the minefield of condemnation and persecution faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Christians and helps foster a faith that is bulletproof—impervious to attacks, yet loving and savvy in its approach. Bulletproof Faith is filled with useful insights and proven spiritual practices that deflect attacks and enhance and strengthen faith by turning attacks into opportunities for spiritual growth.

NOTHING SHORT OF A GREAT BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Riki Wilchins has crafted a marvelous primer on the major gender issues facing Americans today, and it's worth reading the book for that purpose alone; but Wilchins manages to provide more than a primer, she gives new life to the long dormant idea that King, Gandhi and Jesus died for, the idea that across the board social constructs must be abandoned, and the fight must be for equal rights for all. Period. No sub-divisions, no special rights, just rights that each and every person is entitled to simply because they are a person.

I doubt Wilchins intended her book to be a theological treatise, but to my way of thinking, her ideas mirror those of Jesus who not only deconstructed social constructs, but taught that each and every person is entitled not only to radical love, but life in a community of radical egalitarianism.

"Queer Theory, Gender Theory" is a great read, a wonderful book, and a breath of fresh air in this age of homophobic rhetoric. In short, buy and read this great book!

Editorial Review:

A one-stop, no-nonsense introduction to the core of postmodern theory, particularly its impact on queer and gender studies. Nationally known gender activist Riki Wilchins combines straightforward prose with concrete examples from LGBT and feminist politics, as well as her own life, to guide the reader through the ideas that have forever altered our understanding of bodies, sex and desire. This is that rare postmodern theory book that combines accessibility, passion, personal experience and applied politics, noting at every turn why these ideas matter and how they can affect your daily life.

Riki Wilchins is the founding executive director of the Gender Public Advocacy Coalition. The author of Read My Lips and GenderQueer. She was selected by Time magazine as one of "100 Civic Innovators for the 21st Century."

Editorial Review:

In The Children Are Free, Rev. Jeff Miner and John Tyler Connoley offer a comprehensive yet easy-to-read examination of the biblical evidence regarding loving same-sex relationships and God's attitude toward them.

In Chapter One, the authors lead the reader through a discussion of each of the six passages traditionally used against gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. In their friendly and authoritative style, they demonstrate how an anti-gay interpretation is a misapplication of these scriptures.

Then, in Chapter Two, Miner and Connoley turn our attention to the biblical stories and passages that affirm loving same-sex relationships. Did you know Jesus once met a gay person? Jesus' loving response is just one of the well-researched stories presented in this chapter.

Chapter Three asks readers to take seriously the call of Jesus to think more deeply about biblical rules. And Chapter Four calls Christians to action, making a connection between the conflicts in the early Church and those occurring within the Church today.

This book belongs in the library of any Christian questioning the role of Scripture in the lives of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, or the role of GLB people in the Church.

Wow, I never thought I'd like this, it's for gay guys too! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Who'd think that a dyed-in-the-wool gay guy would get so much out of a book called this. It's not a great title, because it limits who's going to pick it up, but geez, it's funny. I laughed out loud a few times and called a few of my friends to read sections of it. It's a humor book, and it has a lot of facts in it too.

Like every gay guy, I've had my share of relatioships with supposedly straight or bi guys who I always think are going to leave me for a girl, and they often do. Well, I wish I had that funny contract at the back of the book about what to fill out for my partners. I love it. Like the section that limits your partner's "other partner" to leaving one foot on the floor at all times, or not leaving a toothbrush over at the house.

I'm most fascinated about the celebs they have talking to them, and also the scientific research, good and bad about bi people. I didn't knw there was so much about it, and so much confusion. I love the animals section, where everything from snails to whales show incidents of going both ways.

Even if you're not promiscuous, or if you're straight, or gay, of if you've ever wondered or wandered the other way, you'll find something enjoyable in this. It's a perfect bathroom book, to pick up and read while sitting there. I've bought three copies for guys who wll at first get offended, but I've marked the pages they should read. Thanks Nicole and Michael for a good laugh.

Editorial Review:

Is love "blind" when it comes to gender? For women, it just might be. This unsettling and original book offers a radical new understanding of the context-dependent nature of female sexuality. Lisa Diamond argues that for some women, love and desire are not rigidly heterosexual or homosexual but fluid, changing as women move through the stages of life, various social groups, and, most important, different love relationships.

This perspective clashes with traditional views of sexual orientation as a stable and fixed trait. But that view is based on research conducted almost entirely on men. Diamond is the first to study a large group of women over time. She has tracked one-hundred women for more than ten years as they have emerged from adolescence into adulthood. She summarizes their experiences and reviews research ranging from the psychology of love to the biology of sex differences. Sexual Fluidity offers moving first-person accounts of women falling in and out of love with men or women at different times in their lives. For some, gender becomes irrelevant: "I fall in love with the person, not the gender," say some respondents.

Sexual Fluidity offers a new understanding of women's sexuality--and of the central importance of love.

Editorial Review:

The closer a secret is kept, the more powerful the impact once it is finally revealed. Such is the case with author and activist J.L. King's intriguing look at the lives and lifestyles of black men who sleep with other men but do not consider themselves to be gay. These men live "on the down low," the "DL" for short, and their sexual activities have gained significant notice as the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in black women has skyrocketed, with the vast majority of cases coming from heterosexual sex. King is a veteran of the DL himself and his book serves partly as a social and psychological survey of the other men he has surveyed and partly as highly candid memoir. King was well regarded in his community, popular at his church, successful in his career, and married to a woman who had no idea that his secret life existed. But when she caught him in a lie and with another man, the marriage collapsed and King's long and painful path to self-awareness began. King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are. Among the more intriguing elements of On the Down Low are the peculiar approaches men on the DL have to the sexual act, seeking a strictly physical sexual relationship with their secret male partners while remaining in more traditional arrangements with women. Whether this discrepancy is a product of scrupulously guarded secrecy and shame or the natural preference of an understudied sexual identity is one of the numerous questions raised by this book. Though the infection statistics make the DL a huge public health issue, King is neither a sociologist nor a medical professional. And while a more clinical look at this issue would be welcome, King accomplished what he set out to do: provide light and insight into a world that so many have worked so hard to keep in the shadows. --John Moe

Excellent Book! Recommended to all mental health professionals! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed the introspective approach the author's took in describing the social-political perspective of LGB (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) individuals. Various essays throughout the book explores the hidden lives of LBG and themes such as identity, hate crimes, the incidences of gay teen suicides, and other mental health issues. This book was rich in substance and written by well-respected mental health experts in the field of LGBT studies.

Editorial Review:

A compilation of important articles which provides a comprehensive overview of current thought on the psychological aspects of the lesbian, gay, and bisexual experience. The editors have included a new set of articles for the second edition of Psychological Perspectives, most of which have been published since the first edition of their book. The book is divided into nine sections which deal with the meaning of sexual orientation; the psychological dimensions of prejudice, discrimination, and violence; identity development; diversity; relationships and families; adolescence, midlife, and aging; health (including a discussion of AIDS); mental health; and the status of practice, research, and public policy issues in American psychology.

Editorial Review:

Alice in Genderland tells the story of Dr. Richard Novic, Harvard-educated psychiatrist and crossdresser. No memoir like it has ever been published. Most of the time, he is a man at the office or a husband and father at home. But one evening a week, she is a woman about town, shopping, dining, dancing, and dating a man for over eight years. And it's all out in the open.

Although he now leads a richly expressive life, Dr. Novic suffered since childhood with a secret, a desire he was in no way equipped to handle, but one that eventually burst through his denial, a few months before his wedding day. Just once, he felt, while he still could, he had to know how it felt to be a woman.

Like Alice in Wonderland, his curiosity led him to fall headlong down a rabbit hole, through desperate straits, mind-opening surprises, heart-rending changes, and boundless love. By the time he was back on his feet, he was a different person, living a lifestyle he hadn't known existed. Anyone who has struggled to figure out who they are and how they want to live will see themselves in this powerful life story.
