Editorial Review:

As tools for tuning modern engines have become more powerful and sophisticated in recent years, the need for in-depth knowledge of engine management systems and tuning techniques has grown. Tuning engines can be a mysterious art, all engines need a precise balance of fuel, air, and timing in order to reach their true performance potential. This book explains how the EFI system determines engine operation and how the calibrator can change the controlling parameters to optimize actual engine performance. Engine Management: Advanced Tuning takes engine-tuning techniques to the next level. It is a must-have for tuners and calibrators and a valuable resource for anyone who wants to make horsepower with a fuel-injected, electronically controlled engine. Author Greg Banish is a calibration engineer with extensive aftermarket performance calibration experience. He has a BSME from GMI Engineering and Management Institute (Kettering University). With over a thousand unique calibrations performed over five years, he has worked with enthusiasts and OEMs alike to improve the performance and driving behavior of a wide range of vehicles. The book contains detailed equations, graphs, and illustrations. Also included are valuable and practical examples, including real-world examples based upon the author’s experience that will help more advanced readers apply this new information to situations that are commonly seen during calibration.

great book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I recently developed a turbo system for a buddy of mine, mostly from the past knowledge of reading this book years ago. I recently purchased it again, since my original copy was misplaced. I used it to double check my design, & everything works, very well. I made a 18second car run mid 15s, with a junkyard turbo. The car has more potential also.

Turbo Design 101 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Wow! Just what I was looking for. Corky has put together a collection of formulas and uncommon sense that is needed to design and build turbo systems. I love it.

I used this book to create an Excel worksheet full of needed design formulas. I can now make tradeoffs and design decisions before I build it, and I have a much better chance of getting what I expect, without a bunch of cut and try and try again attempts.

Corky's book will be a huge help to me, and I imagine it will be to you as well. This may not be the book for someone who is afraid of math, or who does not want to understand something. This book is not a cookbook approach, rather, it is a chef school delivering the reader with enough information to "cook up" his own turbo creation.

If you want the ability and confidence to design and build system that work, and that work the first time, this book will help you.

Not what you would expect 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased this book and have read it twice from front to back. It had a lot of good solid information, however the title is decieving in the fact that it has the word "engineering" in it. This book touches lightly on the subject of engineering, however it stops there. This book is mainly designed for those with Camaros or Corvettes and doesnt really give much information regarding independent suspensions or anything else besides what may be found on those two vehicles. I am by no means an engineer but I do know a thing or two about mechanics and this book does not help me to understand the complete dynamics involved in a vehicle chassis. It barely goes into detail about shocks or springs and the only information that seems relevant to that is "How to cut your springs". This book is written more for the back-yard mechanic than for the aspiring automotive engineer.

Save your money 2 out of 5 stars.

Book goes over a lot of information in a very short time, but not much of that information is worth anything unless you're building a circle-track or drag car. Took the hit and ordered Stanforth's Competition Car Suspension.

The ideal engine rebuilders book at a bargain price. 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

After I had read both books on Nissan engines by this author I bought this book too. This book is set out so you can diagnose faults first to determine if you need to rebuild or not. Then it goes into engine teardown in detail. It describes the rebuilding process. The cylinder heads are covered in a separate chapter which the author explains.

For anyone who loves working on cars this book is ideal. Its written so most people will understand it.There are plenty of photos throughout with explanations. This book is like your best friend guiding you through the whole process.

This book is a gem and a bargain.Make this the first book you consider on engine rebuilding. The book was written to give guidance on all engines not just V8's.A must have book.

Editorial Review:

All of the information in this valuable companion guide is presented in terms easy to understand. Packed with general tips, techniques, and procedures that can be applied to all types of engine building, whether for musclecars, classics, hot rods, powerboats or all-out race cars.

Information 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Has alot of good valuable information to add HP to your VW. And what combinations work well togather. How to get mor bang for your buck. Downfalls is it is a bit out dated and doesn't have a section on step by step how to put togather a hot rod motor.

Very Informative 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book gives you exactly what it claims. All the best ways to improve performance on your VW. There is quite a bit for the average bug guy but has great technical information for the top mechanics. I wish there had been a bit more on improving fuel injected engines though.

How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines 3 out of 5 stars.

The How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines was over my head.

outdated but interesting history of aircooled vw performance. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Interesting from a historic perspective, but technology marches on. Needs a new edition that covers the last 20 years of performance improvements.

Good but outdated. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for something to help you choose from modern aircooled vw performance parts this is not really the book for you. The engine used for most of the tests in the book is a 1500 single port with single oil relief, the book only touches on dual port heads and dual oil relief cases. Although this book is outdated their is still a lot of good information.

An excellent book for a beginner or experienced mechanic. 5 out of 5 stars.
42 of 43 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Yost has done a very good job of covering very diverse subject matter. Engine designs are so different in the details that most engine books cover just one model or manufacturer. I found all of the information in the book very interesting and will use most of it between the John Deere I just completed and the Ford I need to do soon.

Between this book and your model-specific service manual, even an inexperienced mechanic should be able to complete a tractor engine.

Essential handbook for tractor engine rebuild 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is the essential companion to your tractor manual for rebuilding your tractor engine. Great descriptions, good photos, all the tips and tricks you need to rebuild your engine start to finish. Helpful ideas about when to send parts out for machining or refurbishing. I couldn't have done my engine without this. Highly recommended, best money you will spend.

Editorial Review:

After helping readers set up shop, Yost guides them through the process of determining when to replace and when to rebuild parts, discussing the advantages of authenticity when relevant. He also offers expert opinions on tasks that can be done at home and those that should be farmed out to shop pros. The book covers the most popular two-, four- and six-cylinder gas-burning engines, with special sections on diesel and propane-powered tractors.

Pictures galore! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for the enthusiast or for those with an interest in Porsches. I rebuilt a 911 engine without this resource; it would have been so much easier and faster with this book as a reference. I bought this as a gift for someone that acquired a 78 911SC -- he thinks the pictures are exceptional.

An absolute must for anyone with a 911 in the garage 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

One of the best 911 books out there. Suprisingly clear and easy to read. If you've never torn down your 911 motor because you always thought, "I'd should leave it to the professionals" read this book. It will show you, with lots of great pics, how to do everything in a step by step way and give you the confidence to tackle your motor. I read this book then bought five more for my other 911 buddies and have since tackled complete rebuilds. If you only buy two book, it should be this one and '101 Projects for your 911'.

Editorial Review:

Never-before published information details the nuances of this daunting task! From dropping the engine, to reconditioning and blueprinting, through final reinstallation and break-in, Dempsey guides you step-by-step through the pitfalls often experienced by even the best mechanics. Contains reliable information on parts interchange, performance modifications, reliability upgrades, teardown procedures, and potential problems encountered along the way. This is essential information for do-it-yourselfers and for those looking to hire a professional.

Unsatisfactory 1 out of 5 stars.

Amazon indicated this item was in stock when I ordered it more than a week ago. I got an Email today telling me it hasn't shipped yet, but is "in process" and I will get it 23 Feb (2 more weeks). They also say I can't change my order now since it's "in process". I figured it's because they probably don't really have it in stock, so I went to the order page and they say there that it's in stock and would ship in 2 to 3 days (same as when I ordered). I'll never place another order with Amazon. They can keep the book and my money. They don't offer a link, phone number, or anything to contact their customer service, so I used this forum. I don't like being treated this way.

I ordered this book for my son. However he is a mechanic and already knew most of the things that were in the book. When my husband told him what he was going to do to his car my son told him he really needed this book because it was really thorough and gave step by step instructions.

Great Basic and detailed lawnmower repair book. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It had many details and step by step how to rebuild the lawnmower. Provides all the necessary info of what could be wrong and how to find out if it is. Great buy!

Everything you would expect from Haynes 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

No surprises, just a useful book from Haynes. I have used their manuals for years as they have pretty comprehensive coverage of whatever you would need to know to keep, in this case, a lawnmower engine running.

Not up to the Haynes standard . . . 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Sorely disappointed. This manual is not up to the normal level of detail and quality I expect from Haynes Manuals - of which I have many. No info on electronics! Print quality can be rather weak in some Haynes volumes, but this was poor. I returned it and found what I needed to know on the web.

Editorial Review:

Covers maintenance, troubleshooting and repair procedures for popular small engines used on mowers, garden tillers, generators, pumps and similar equipment. Does not cover small hand-held engines used on weed-eaters, blowers, etc.

Webers Demystified 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I read this book in one day and then began a complete disassembly of my 40DCOE18 carbs the next day. Where the text was a bit unclear, the pictures more than made up for it. I was able to do both carbs in about 4 hours with no surprises and feeling a lot more confident that I'll be able to tune these when my car gets reassembled in about a month. Great book. Realize that, at this stage, I'm not tuning for racing - so take these comments with that perspective.

Weber Carburetors by Pat Braden 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The book does not contain a schematic diagram of the 40 IDF, one of the most popular carburetors for Porsche 356 and is not of much value to me. I would not have purchased it if I had known this.

Good enough to read as literature, not just a tech book 4 out of 5 stars.

Good historic and technical info.

Informative and well written 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book goes beyond being a mere product manual. It is, instead an education into the science of fuel/air intake for the internal combustion engine. Of course, it thoroughly vets its core topic, the Weber/Dellorto carburetor line. You'll learn about the evolution of the Weber carburetor and find out, in depth, how to work on these wonderfully engineered products.
