Editorial Review:

The book introduces the theory of the structural loading on ships and offshore structures caused by wind, waves and currents, and goes on to describe the applications of this theory in terms of real structures. The main topics described are linear-wave induced motions, loads on floating structures, numerical methods for ascertaining wave induced motions and loads, viscous wave loads and damping, stationkeeping and water impact and entry. The applications of the theoretical principles are introduced with extensive use of exercises and examples. They include conventional ships, barges, high speed marine vehicles, semisubmersibles, tension leg platforms, moored or dynamic positioned ships, risers, buoys, fishing nets, jacket structures and gravity platforms. One aim of the book is to provide a physical understanding through simplified mathematical models. In this way one can develop analytical tools to evaluate results from test models, full scale trials or computer simulation, and learn which parameters represent the major contributions and influences on sea loads.

The most complete NA reference available 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

With the possible exception of SNAME's "Principles of Naval Architecture," "Introduction to Naval Architecture" is the perfect introductory text for any naval architecture/marine engineering student. It includes brief but dense overviews of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, ship structure, resistance, and propulsion. While there are more detailed texts for each of the above topics (again, SNAME's PNA does a good job as a reference, but not so much as a text, and Harvald's "Resistance and Propulsion of Ships" is THE text for that topic), it is the perfect source for equations, derivations, illustrations, graphs, and, most importantly, example problems. It's very hard to find any clear examples of NA problems in most texts - the examples in this book are worked through step by step, which makes comprehension a breeze. If you're studying or working in the field of naval architecture, this book is a necessary addition to your reference library.

Great for novices and experts 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great text for everyone. I think Zubaly's Applied Naval Architecture does a slightly better job in presenting the coefficients, but in every other respect, this text is superior. Zubaly and this text are weak in the details of seakeeping, but there are several other specific seakeeping texts, namely Dynamics of Marine Vehicles by Battacharia (I know I misspelled his name)

Editorial Review:

Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings is for people who like to work with their hands and who appreciate traditional nautical craftsmanship. You don't have to be the master of any craft to undertake any of these projects--from a simple kamal or latitude hook to the more complex pelorus or octant--just a careful and enthusiastic worker.

These 18 projects fall roughly into three categories: decorative, useful, and somewhere in between. Some, such as the astrolabe, are mainly for display. On the other hand, the sounding line is an important and practical tool for small-craft navigation, particularly in the absence of an electronic sounder. The cross-staff falls somewhere in between, equally at home in the den or the ditch kit.

Each of the devices discussed here--with simple, proven building instructions complemented by clear illustrations--has at one time or another been used for the practical business of navigation, and each is worth reviving for its beauty, historic value, or sheer usefulness.

Dennis Fisher has designed these projects with an emphasis on simplicity and reasonable cost. Everything can be scratch-built using easily obtainable materials and tools, and each is true to the spirit and function of the original instrument.

Editorial Review:

This second edition deals comprehensively with all aspects of a ship's machinery from propulsion and steering to deck machinery and electrical equipment with a strong emphasis upon correct and safe procedures.

Material has been added and revised to reflect the greater weight now being placed upon the cost-effective operation of ships; in terms of greater equipment reliability, more fuel-efficient engines, the ever-increasing shift towards automatically operated machinery, and the need for fewer engineering crew. This is an invaluable guide for professionals but equally covers the requirements for Class 4 and Class 3 Engineer's Certificates of Competency, the first two years of the Engineer Cadet Training Scheme, and the Engineering Knowledge syllabus for the Master's Certificate.

An incredible book for Mercury outboards fanatics 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As one who grew up on a marina in central Ky., the outboard "wars" of the 1960-70's were a major part of my life. We were Mercury fanatics in Evinrude country. Rodengen's work on the life of Carl Kiekhaefer is mandatory reading for anyone who worshipped at the Mercury altar. It confirms the genius of Kiekhaefer, and the superiority of his product, while at the same time making clear the weaknesses that ultimately led to the loss of his company to Brunswick, and with it the unique "personality" that made Kiekhaefer Mercury the beloved company of its time.

The most amazing thing to me was the number of engineering accomplishments and the ultimate dominance of the marine industry by the men in black. For any Mercury devotee, this book will literally cause tears in your eyes. I'm glad it was written.

Editorial Review:

Iron Fist: The Lives of Carl Kiekhaefer, reveals the breathtaking life of the indomitable founder of Mercury Marine. Kiekhaefer was a modern-day giant killer, who delighted in spoiling the well-laid plans of competition. To achieve his obsession of making Mercury the largest manufacturer of marine propulsion in the world, he would sacrifice almost anything.

Readers of Rodengen's superb book will encounter industrial drama of exhilarating proportions, from first time revelations of a secret multi-billion dollar conspiracy of friendship, to Kiekhaefer's ruthless battle for majority ownership, and the wholesale abandonment of his family and traditions.

This book covers the general engineering knowledge required by candidates for the Department of Transport's Certificates of Competency in Marine Engineering, Class One and Class Two. The text is updated throughout in this third edition, and new chapters have been added on production of fresh water and on noise and vibration. Reference is also provided to up-to-date papers and official publications on specialized topics. These updates ensure that this little volume will continue to be a useful pre-examination and revision text. - Marine Engineers Review, January 1992

Expensive but worth it in terms of unique well presented information 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is one-of-a-kind, as far as I have been able to determine, in that it is the only book that deals specifically with the guidance and control of marine vehicles. The book deals mainly with the modeling and control of unmanned untethered underwater vehicles (remotely operated vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles) and high speed craft (surface effect ships and foilborne catamarans). It presents clear concrete mathematical models throughout. It does not drift off into an unreadable "equation jungle" at any point.
The design of modern vehicle guidance and control systems requires knowledge of a broad field of disciplines. Some of these are vectorial kinematics and dynamics, hydrodynamics, navigation systems and control theory. To be able to design a high performance control system it is evident that a good mathematical model of the vehicle is required for simulation and verification of the design. As a result, this book contains a large number of mathematical models intended for this purpose. The book is organized as follows:
The basics of modeling are covered first. Marine vehicle kinematics and dynamics in 6 degrees of freedom are covered in chapter 2 and environmental disturbances in terms of wind, waves, and currents are covered in chapter 3.
Chapter 4 covers the stability and control system design for small unmanned underwater vehicles.
Surface ships are covered in the next two chapters. Ship dynamics, stability, and maneuvering are covered in chapter 5 and ship control system design are covered in chapter 6.
High speed craft are covered in chapter 7 by the study of control system design for surface effect ships (SES) and foilcats.
This book has very good illustrations and block diagrams, a thorough definition of mathematical terminology, and good examples throughout. There are end of chapter exercises that involve both computation and the answering of subjective essay type questions. Unfortunately, no solutions are shown in the book. The computational questions are of such a format and complexity that knowledge of MATLAB would be greatly advantageous for their solution. Although this book is clearly intended for ocean engineering students, from my experience with it any engineer who has had exposure to control theory will probably be able to understand it due to its clear presentation and numerous examples. You should also be acquainted with Lagrangian dynamics since this lends to a cleaner description of ship motion than the Newtonian case and is therefore heavily used by the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in the simulation or control of the behavior of ocean vehicles.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive and extensive study of the latest research in control systems for marine vehicles. Demonstrates how the implementation of mathematical models and modern control theory can reduce fuel consumption and improve reliability and performance. Coverage includes ocean vehicle modeling, environmental disturbances, the dynamics and stability of ships, sensor and navigation systems. Numerous examples and exercises facilitate understanding.

Comprehensive and informative! 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

In this large and attractive book, the author traces the history of the ship from the earliest dugouts to the war- and cargo-ships of the 1990s. Along the way, the reader is treated to a wealth of wonderful color pictures, and a wonderfully informative narrative.

One would think that a work of such breadth would be short on details. And yet, somehow the author succeeds in giving the reader a relatively full understanding of the ship or technology that is being discussed. So, if you are interested in the ships of a certain era, or in ships in general, then I highly recommend that you get this book. It's really great!

Editorial Review:

A commanding view from the bridge of nautical history, "The History of the Ship" takes a comprehensive look at the ships of all ages, from dugout canoes to Nelson's ships-of-the-line, from great battleships and ocean liners to today's most sophisticated aircraft carriers, and supertankers. 250+ illustrations, many in color .
