Very good reference book 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In my circumstances I wouldn't be without this book. I'm doing some electrical wiring upgrades and repairs in my home. This book is a Godsend as I'm not all that knowledgeable about the subject. However, I just look up the subject in this book and it gives me both an illustration and a written explanation on how to accomplish a task. I compare the work required with my skill level and decided whether I can do the work or not before I tear into a wall, open a wiring box, or disconnect any wires. If it appears the task is beyond me, I don't do it myself. This little book, accompanied by the most recent code book, has allowed me to do some things I couldn't have figured out on my own. It also discusses essential safety and wiring techniques. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is planning on doing his or her own standard wiring. You'll know whether or not you're up to the job and if not, you can call an electrician. In the long run, it'll probably save some hard earned cash, a few hours of blown fuses, darkness, or worse, a serious accident or fire. Word to the wise; buy it before you try it!

Editorial Review:

Revised and completely updated for the 2008 National Electric Code, this small manual continues its 75-year history of demonstrating how to install safe, convenient, and economical wiring. Encouraging readers to tackle jobs small and large, the guide covers everything from repairing a table lamp to wiring a whole house. After introducing the basics—standards, codes, safety practices, and an overview of how electricity is measured and delivered—chapters show how to design a layout for lights, switches, and receptacles; run a line from a utility pole; install wires, circuits, and grounds; and handle special projects such as replacing old wiring and wiring detached garages and accessory buildings.

Great book for future electrician! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book while in Iraq to study before I get out of the army and try to get under an apprenticeship. This book has helped me learn a LOT about the trade of inside wireman and the basic fundamentals of electricity from fomulas to installation of panel boxes to wiring an entire house and to which lamps will give the best lighting effect in a room. I am really looking forward to learning more about the trade. So far I have read it once and am already half way thru for my second time around. I highly recommend this book however, what I have learned about electrical is only from this book so I do not have a comparison.

Editorial Review:

Critical revisions in technical topics driven by emerging technology and code changes comprise this truly comprehensive reference that gives an insider’s look at how the electrical trade works. The guidelines provide an essential context for understanding the major industry segments—residential, farm, commercial, and industrial—and the techniques help solve all wiring problems. A wealth of tips and handy tricks offered in a professional, down-to-earth style make this a favorite on-the-job resource. Professional practitioners, students and apprentices, and those seeking more information to wire at home will find everything they need to know about the wiring trade in a single, compact volume.

Outdated Material 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is mostly general information. Many of the figures do not identify the wires e.g. hot, neutral, ground. The section on Grounding is many years out of date, and would present an electrical hazard if followed. Most modern homes nowadays use PVC piping thus rendering all this advice on this page useless and dangerous for the layman. Because plumbers use nonconductive material to make connection watertight, using pipes for electrical ground is outright dangerous. Do not use this book because some advice is good, but some is not. Not knowing what advice is the good one may put your life in danger.

A Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Providing a unique approach to learning the Code, the Illustrated Guide to the NEC uses highly detailed, technically accurate illustrations and visuals to break down and simplify the expanding volume and complexity of the 2008 National Electrical Code. By translating the sometimes vague, complicated wording of the Code into straightforward illustrations and clear explanations, this book provides a resource that will facilitate comprehension and application of Code requirements for beginning and master electricians alike. Material is organized logically, covering fundamental provisions first, and then grouping code requirements by the type of occupancy, beginning with one-family dwellings, and progressing on to multi-family, commercial locations, and special occupancies. This organization is not only logical but also reflects how information is needed when working in the electrical industry, better preparing readers for the real world. Its comprehensive coverage, innovative learning approach, and industry-based organization make this an indispensable supplement to the NEC, whether users need information on a specific area, or need to learn the Code from cover to cover.
