Review of Elements of Power System Analysis 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This has been the bible of electrical power systems for the past 44 years so don't leave home without it ! It is a classic well-written textbook that stresses the important fundmantals of power system analysis with clarity that I have not seen in any other power book. Although other books may be fatter and contain more details, this book remains the best by wisely avoiding falling in the often tempting trap of computational details of numerical techniques and remains faithful to the basic principles. The chapters are just of the right length with many examples and clear explanations. It feels so good for the student and the professor to cover each chapter in about a week. I have used this book as a student and as an instructor and my recommendation is this: stick with this original classic and avoid the imitations! You will never regret it !

Excellent P.E. Review Book 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the best books written on the subject of Power System analysis. This book has a very good approach to power system problems with many solved examples and many more problems at the end of each chapter. I recommend anyone taking the P.E. exam to have this book as a reference for Power System problems.

Editorial Review:

The American electric utility system is quietly falling apart. Once taken for granted, the industry has become increasingly unstable, fragmented, unreliable, insecure, inefficient, expensive, and harmful to our environment and public health. According to Sovacool, the fix for this ugly array of problems lies not in nuclear power or clean coal, but in renewable energy systems that produce few harmful byproducts, relieve congestion on the transmission grid, require less maintenance, are not subject to price volatility, and enhance the security of the national energy system from natural catastrophe, terrorist attack, and dependence on supply from hostile and unstable regions of the world. Here arises The Dirty Energy Dilemma: If renewable energy systems deliver such impressive benefits, why are they languishing at the margins of the American energy portfolio? And why does the United States lag so far behind Europe, where conversion to renewable energy systems has already taken off in a big way? Corporate media parrot industry PR that renewable technologies just aren't ready for prime time. But Sovacool marshals extensive field research to show that the only barrier blocking the conversion of a significant proportion of the U.S. energy portfolio to renewables is not technological--the technology is there--but institutional. Public utility commissioners, utility managers, system operators, business owners, and ordinary consumers are hobbled by organizational conservatism, technical incompatibility, legal inertia, weak and inconsistent political incentives, ill-founded prejudices, and apathy. The author argues that significant conversion to technologically proven clean energy systems can happen only if we adopt and implement a whole new set of policies that will target and dismantle the insidious social barriers that are presently blocking decisions that would so obviously benefit society.

Excellent Book on a Difficult Subject 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Although titled "Distribution" this book really refers to the entire transmission-substation-distribution system. This book is extremely well organized and serves as both a reference book and a tutorial for self study. As a reference, it has a lengthy index and good sensible organization of topics, so it is easy to jump right to the item desired. As a tutorial it really shines due to its organization and a simple, direct style of writing. The book's first few chapters review basics such as electric load, equipment, economics, reliability, and so forth. Each such chapter builds rather linearly in detail, and shows how its topics interrelate to the others. Examples are given frequently, using real-world problems and numbers. The rest of the book then examines power delivery systems in a bottom up approach. the author begins with line segments and transformer economics and selection, and shows progressively how element are combined into feeder circuits, into groups of feeders, into sets of groups to form a substation area, and so forth, up to the entire system. At each level, the various tradeoffs in design and cost are examined, and it is shown how the system is optimized and how that optimization impacts other levels of the system. The explanations of feeder layout and configuration tradeoffs, and how to maximize benefit and use flexibility of options in design, are by far the most thorough I've ever seen. There are many case studies and solved problems shown, all of which use real utility system situations and make excellent learning examples. The book is relatively easy to read considering the depth of coverage, but there is a tremendous number of factors and issues that are covered, making it slow learning. However, nowhere else have I seen distribution covered in nearly as much detail or so broadly with respect to performance and cost. Overall, this the most useful book I have seen on distribution planning or systems design.

Editorial Review:

This essential reference surveys the entire field of electric utility distribution system planning as well as its internal interactions;detailing procedures and methods for specification, layout, planning economics, and scheduling and demonstrating how to meet customer demands in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

"Power quality problems have increasingly become a substantial concern over the last decade, but surprisingly few analytical techniques have been developed to overcome these disturbances in system-equipment interactions. Now in this comprehensive book, power engineers and students can find the theoretical background necessary for understanding how to analyze, predict, and mitigate the two most severe power disturbances: voltage sags and interruptions.

This is the first book to offer in-depth analysis of voltage sags and interruptions and to show how to apply mathematical techniques for practical solutions to these disturbances. From UNDERSTANDING AND SOLVING POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS you will gain important insights into

  • Various types of power quality phenomena and power quality standards
  • Current methods for power system reliability evaluation
  • Origins of voltage sags and interruptions
  • Essential analysis of voltage sags for characterization and prediction of equipment behavior and stochastic prediction

Too Basic 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be extremely basic with very short chapters. The contents were good topics for learning but very little was presented. A journey industrial maintenance electrician/electronics technician would find no challange to reading this except for the two manufacturer's schematics.

This book is strictley for the novice.

Editorial Review:

Written with the maintenance technician in mind, Electronic Variable Speed Drives, 2nd Edition serves as a practical guide to understanding different types of drive circuits, including: brushless DC motor controllers, chopper circuits, variable voltage inverters, current source inverters, and flux vector drives. Emphasis throughout the book's fourteen chapters is on troubleshooting and maintenance, with entire chapters devoted to DC Drive troubleshooting and AC Drive troubleshooting. All explanations and theory are fundamental and presented in a clear, concise, no-nonsense manner, with very little use of formulas. This one-of-a-kind book also features a comprehensive glossary to aid in mastering terminology, as well as chapter-specific objectives and review questions designed to reinforce key points.

Editorial Review:

The first systematic presentation of electricity market design—from the basics to the cutting edge. Unique in its breadth and depth. Using examples and focusing on fundamentals, it clarifies long misunderstood issues—such as why todays markets are inherently unstable. The book reveals for the first time how uncoordinated regulatory and engineering policies cause boom-bust investment swings and provides guidance and tools for fixing broken markets. It also takes a provocative look at the operation of pools and power exchanges.
  • Part 1 introduces key economic, engineering and market design concepts.
  • Part 2 links short-run reliability policies with long-run investment problems.
  • Part 3 examines classic designs for day-ahead and real-time markets.
  • Part 4 covers market power, and
  • Part 5 covers locational pricing, transmission right and pricing losses.
The non-technical introductions to all chapters allow easy access to the most difficult topics. Steering an independent course between ideological extremes, it provides background material for engineers, economists, regulators and lawyers alike. With nearly 250 figures, tables, side bars, and concisely-stated results and fallacies, the 44 chapters cover such essential topics as auctions, fixed-cost recovery from marginal cost, pricing fallacies, real and reactive power flows, Cournot competition, installed capacity markets, HHIs, the Lerner index and price caps.

About the Author
Steven Stoft has a Ph.D. in economics (U.C. Berkeley) as well as a background in physics, math, engineering, and astronomy. He spent a year inside FERC and now consults for PJM, California and private generators.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The 2nd edition is almost the same as the first edition. But the book still the best power system book I have ever seen. The book is well written and organized with lot of practical examples. The author has a detailed Matlab codes for T.L. parameters, faults, load flows, optimal dispatch, and stability including the Kron reduction technique for multi-machine system. These codes can mange up to 200 bus power system. The only thing missing in this book is the protection part.

Complements to the Author 5 out of 5 stars.
