Editorial Review:

Joel Derfner is gayer than you.

Don’t feel too bad about it, though, because he has made being gayer than you his life’s work. At summer day camp, when he was six, Derfner tried to sign up for needlepoint and flower arranging, but the camp counselors wouldn’t let him, because, they said, those activities were for girls only. Derfner, just to be contrary, embarked that very day on a solemn and sacred quest: to become the gayest person ever. Along the way he has become a fierce knitter, an even fiercer musical theater composer, and so totally the fiercest step aerobics instructor (just ask him—he’ll tell you himself).

In Swish, Derfner takes his readers on a flamboyant adventure along the glitter-strewn road from fabulous to divine. Whether he’s confronting the demons of his past at a GLBT summer camp, using the Internet to “meet” men—many, many men—or plunging headfirst (and nearly naked) into the shady world of go-go dancing, he reveals himself with every gayer-than-thou flourish to be not just a stylish explorer but also a fearless one. So fearless, in fact, that when he sneaks into a conference for people who want to cure themselves of their homosexuality, he turns the experience into one of the most fascinating, deeply moving chapters of the book. Derfner, like King Arthur, Christopher Columbus, and Indiana Jones—but with a better haircut and a much deeper commitment to fad diets—is a hero destined for legend.

Written with wicked humor and keen insight, Swish is at once a hilarious look at contemporary ideas about gay culture and a poignant exploration of identity that will speak to all readers—gay, straight, and in between.

A captivating romance between two determined women at the top of their repective career fields 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A relatively early offering from Radclyffe, this book makes me marvel anew at this author's facility with characterization and storytelling in bringing an entertaining and compelling romance to life. You can see why she has such a following. She has a way with picking out the observational details and thoughts that successful, driven, talented women might have in a way that makes these often tortured--though also idealized--women interesting to read about. Radclyffe seems to have some insight into the fine line between genius and madness, and the different ways people isolate themselves. Her characters (protagonists) often seem to have a kind of unconscious nobility mixed with personal magnetism that helps them own a room naturally, or take control in a situation, even while their personal lives are either non-existent, or variously imperfect. They can be arrogant and stubborn, but almost never without justification that you can't help but believe in as as a reader. Therefore, you care what happens to them. And you want them to get together because Radclyffe constructs her main characters in such a way that you can see how they support and complement one another, have the chance to really get one another and end each other's isolation, and thus belong together. It's fun to read.

This book is not an exception to the formula above. Saxon is a driven trauma surgeon. Jude is a motivated documentary film-maker filming a year in the life of Saxon's new trauma fellow Deb Stein. They clash over establishing boundaries and territory in the hospital. They are both confused over being uncharacteristically drawn to the other, and worried about the implied loss of control these messy feelings could create, thus they resist the attraction, while simultaneously building a relationship of mutual respect. Which of course happily leads to the inevitable.

I like stories where the tension is successfully built as the main characters resist their strong attraction, while at the same time growing closer. Where they actually think about acting out of character, versus making sudden moves that are unsupported in thought or foreshadowed in any way. The medical background and detail is a good setting, and provides a nice framework for life and death drama, high stakes, a touch of angst, and a little hurt-comfort. Perhaps not literary perfection, but still perfect escapism, which belongs in my "will re-read" 4-star pile.

Superficial and Boring! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I would have thought that the last thing a book about a porn star would be is boring! But this poorly written and badly edited offering is like taking sleeping pills and then going to the opera. There are no revealed secrets, no juicy insider revelations, very little sexual titillation, and absolutely no self examination.

If anything this book is full of self delusion. I found it interesting that throughout the book the author refers to others, in passing, as "Hos" ,and decries "Whorish" behavior. Yet he seems not to appreciate that the "escorting" he depended on so much is simply a nice term for prostitution. He never looks in the mirror to see the true whore reflected back at him. He is totally blind to the obvious anger deep within him that propells him to agressive and sometimes violent sex play. He simply explains this as his trademark "style". He makes all types of strange choices even before he becomes a pornstar; his explantion for all this is silly. The most glaring lapse is his failure to see that the same exhibitionism that led him to stand up as a southern preacher, may have lead him to the hyper-exhibitionism of the porn business.

There are a few things in the book to commend the author; most noticeably his committment to fighting AIDS in the Black community, and his warning to young black gay men to be cautious before rushing into the porn business. While this book did not make for a good bedtime read; I would not, if I had a chance, kick Bobby Blake out of bed.

This book was obviously written to make a quick buck. In this I wish the author well. I wish him well in the new career path he is now following. One day he may actually be able to write a truthful honest memoir. That day is not now.

Editorial Review:

The most successful African American in gay adult film, Bobby Blake has appeared in over one hundred movies. In My Life in Porn, Blake for the first time goes behind the scenes of the sex industry to reveal intimate stories that are sexy, fascinating, and sometimes disturbing. Blake also shares his private spiritual struggle and the quest for love.

TOTALLY INSPIRING!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I love how this book is full of excellent advice that I can read whenever I'm feeling confused or depressed. I am a big fan of Carol Weston's "Dear Carol" column in Girls' Life magazine (and also of her novels) so it's really cool to have her best advice in one book. She also quotes a ton of my favorite musicians, actors, and other writers. Basically, thanks to FOR GIRLS ONLY, even if I've already talked to my mom and best friend about a problem, I still have another place to go for good advice or just to get me motivated to get my work done or try to meet new people or whatever. FOR GIRLS ONLY is FOR YOU!!!

Editorial Review:

Looking for some words of wisdom? for girls only is here to help with tips, advice, and tons of fun, clever quotes about friends, family, school, life, and love.

Carol Weston, advice columnist, novelist, and best-selling author of girltalk, adds her own spin to over five hundred carefully chosen quotations. You'll find insight and inspiration in the words of Socrates and Seinfeld, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Latifah, Mark Twain and Halle Berry -- and in proverbs and quotations from around the world and throughout history that are still perfect for here and now.

Editorial Review:

In this path-breaking work, Jasbir K. Puar argues that configurations of sexuality, race, gender, nation, class, and ethnicity are realigning in relation to contemporary forces of securitization, counterterrorism, and nationalism. She examines how liberal politics serve to incorporate certain queer subjects into the fold of the nation-state, through developments including the legal recognition inherent in the overturning of anti-sodomy laws and the proliferation of more mainstream representation. These incorporations have shifted queers from their construction as figures of death (the AIDS epidemic) to subjects tied to ideas of life and productivity (gay marriage and reproductive kinship). Puar contends, however, that this tenuous inclusion of some queer subjects depends on the production of populations of Orientalized terrorist bodies. Heteronormative ideologies that the U.S. nation-state has long relied on are now accompanied by homonormative ideologies replicating narrow racial, class, gender, and national ideals. These "homonationalisms" are deployed to distinguish upright "properly hetero," and now "properly homo," U.S. patriots from perversely sexualized and racialized terrorist look-a-likes--especially Sikhs, Muslims, and Arabs--who are cordoned off for detention and deportation.

Puar combines transnational feminist and queer theory, Foucauldian biopolitics, Deleuzian philosophy, and technoscience criticism, and draws from an extraordinary range of sources, including governmental texts, legal decisions, films, television, ethnographic data, queer media, and activist organizing materials and manifestos. Looking at various cultural events and phenomena, she highlights troublesome links between terrorism and sexuality: in feminist and queer responses to the Abu Ghraib photographs, in the triumphal responses to the Supreme Court's Lawrence decision repealing anti-sodomy laws, in the measures Sikh Americans and South Asian diasporic queers take to avoid being profiled as terrorists, and in what Puar argues is a growing Islamophobia within global queer organizing.

Awesome book! A must read for all women. 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

This book was the most awesome book on lesbian relationships I have ever read. The stories are emotional and erotic! I loved every story and highly recommend this book to all women, whether you are straight, bi, or lesbian. This book shows how women relate on all levels, especially sexually. A real eye-opener for the novice or curious.

Depends on what you want it for... 3 out of 5 stars.

I found this collection to be standard. Like most erotica, this compilation has a few shining stars as well as a few stinkers, with most everything else falling in the middle.

One of the stories was mediocre in its editing: There were a few times where the author's repeated use of the same word distracted from the reading (After reading only 2 pages, I wanted to ring up the author and yell, "Buy a thesaurus!")
Another story was poorly paced: I wanted to sink my teeth into erotica and instead I got three pages of fruit salad recipes.

That said, I must give credit for a few good choices by the editor. One nod goes to the fact that she tried to create a balance of romance themes and hard core sexual stories. A second nod goes to her attempts to cater to a wide variety of sexual tastes and fetishes, from vanilla to S&M.
If you're in the mood for a decent collection of varied erotica to have on your bookshelf, this is a nice choice. If you're just looking for some reading to whack with, I suggest you save your money and surf up nifty dot org or some other web source.

Editorial Review:

How have major civilizations of the last two millennia treated people who were attracted to their own sex? In a narrative tour de force, Louis Crompton chronicles the lives and achievements of homosexual men and women alongside a darker history of persecution, as he compares the Christian West with the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, Arab Spain, imperial China, and pre-Meiji Japan.

Ancient Greek culture celebrated same-sex love in history, literature, and art, making high claims for its moral influence. By contrast, Jewish religious leaders in the sixth century B.C.E. branded male homosexuality as a capital offense and, later, blamed it for the destruction of the biblical city of Sodom. When these two traditions collided in Christian Rome during the late empire, the tragic repercussions were felt throughout Europe and the New World.

Louis Crompton traces Church-inspired mutilation, torture, and burning of "sodomites" in sixth-century Byzantium, medieval France, Renaissance Italy, and in Spain under the Inquisition. But Protestant authorities were equally committed to the execution of homosexuals in the Netherlands, Calvin's Geneva, and Georgian England. The root cause was religious superstition, abetted by political ambition and sheer greed. Yet from this cauldron of fears and desires, homoerotic themes surfaced in the art of the Renaissance masters--Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Sodoma, Cellini, and Caravaggio--often intertwined with Christian motifs. Homosexuality also flourished in the court intrigues of Henry III of France, Queen Christina of Sweden, James I and William III of England, Queen Anne, and Frederick the Great.

Anti-homosexual atrocities committed in the West contrast starkly with the more tolerant traditions of pre-modern China and Japan, as revealed in poetry, fiction, and art and in the lives of emperors, shoguns, Buddhist priests, scholars, and actors. In the samurai tradition of Japan, Crompton makes clear, the celebration of same-sex love rivaled that of ancient Greece.

Sweeping in scope, elegantly crafted, and lavishly illustrated, Homosexuality and Civilization is a stunning exploration of a rich and terrible past.

A Source Book to Put an End to Myths and Prejudices: Healthy Information 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is the third edition of Eric Marcus' "IS IT A CHOICE: Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gay and Lesbian People" and in revising his original 1990s publication he has added some welcome, warm humor and finer perspective, features that make this little book an invaluable help to individual, families and friends who are experiencing discovery of someone 'coming out of the closet'.

Much has changed in the past decade toward wider public understanding of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people: important films with major stars portraying gay people in positive light; popular television shows such as 'Will and Grace', 'The L Word', 'Queer as Folk', 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'; spokesmen and comedians/comediennes like Ellen DeGenneres, Margaret Cho, Kate Clinton etc; important novelists such as Colm Toibin, Michael Cunningham, Jeffrey Eugenides - all of these have opened doors to the public to examine gay life and its spectrum. But when the encounter becomes personal, there are still the myriad questions that many are simply afraid to ask.

Marcus tackles these embarrassing questions head on and with a fine sense of healthy normalcy. Questions range from the tough ones (what makes people gay - is it illness, can it be cured, how do you tell, what are the indicators?) to the often heard but silly ones as to whether all gay men love opera and hate sports and do all lesbians want to appear to be men, et cetera ad infinitum. Yes, to some the questions seem superficial - and thank goodness at last they do! But to others less informed and more threatened by the notion of gay life this book is most helpful. No preaching or politicking here, just common sense approaches to quasi-delicate issues.

Would that school libraries would stock this book on shelves for those students who are coping with 'gay' either within themselves or with barely closeted friends. And for husbands and wives who discover their spouses are lesbian or gay, mothers and fathers who don't have a clue how to broach the subject with their suspected child. Marcus has a terrific sense of humor and writes well, but he also is a committed 'sociologist' who has taken the time to provide not only answers to the obvious questions, but also provides richly detailed resources in the appendices of this book that serve as further information and support guides.

And other than that, this is also a fun book to read - no matter your inclination! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, September 05

Editorial Review:

In The Children Are Free, Rev. Jeff Miner and John Tyler Connoley offer a comprehensive yet easy-to-read examination of the biblical evidence regarding loving same-sex relationships and God's attitude toward them.

In Chapter One, the authors lead the reader through a discussion of each of the six passages traditionally used against gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. In their friendly and authoritative style, they demonstrate how an anti-gay interpretation is a misapplication of these scriptures.

Then, in Chapter Two, Miner and Connoley turn our attention to the biblical stories and passages that affirm loving same-sex relationships. Did you know Jesus once met a gay person? Jesus' loving response is just one of the well-researched stories presented in this chapter.

Chapter Three asks readers to take seriously the call of Jesus to think more deeply about biblical rules. And Chapter Four calls Christians to action, making a connection between the conflicts in the early Church and those occurring within the Church today.

This book belongs in the library of any Christian questioning the role of Scripture in the lives of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, or the role of GLB people in the Church.
