Excellent book for reference in ATM traffic management 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a must for technical reference in ATM. To understand ATM, I started by reading this book. Then, I read the ATM traffic management specification in ATM Forum and quite a number of ATM-related papers. However, I still find the book very useful from time to time. It gives summary of different techniques presented in different papers (eg. schedulling mechanism in Chapter 5), and also overview of different parts of traffic management (at the start of each chapter). For beginners, some sections will be quite difficult, because it did get into the details. You just skip it, I think the rest still able to help you understand the traffic management of ATM. I really love this book. :)

Excellent Reference 5 out of 5 stars.

The most complete reference on ATM QoS theory I've seen.

Reference notation is excellent - Giroux and Ganti do a great job of documenting their sources, which was extremely helpful in cross referencing. If this book doesn't answer your question, it'll point you in the right direction.

Pretty technical reading, but that's what I was looking for when I bought it.

Editorial Review:

"The fact that this is an essentials only' book makes it unique. It's a good book as an introduction to the new ATM technology." -- Matthew Scott, Software Engineer, FORE Systems Anyone needing an introduction to the ATM network will find this book's unique approach a valuable asset in getting up to speed on this growing technology. Intended as a quick reference to the ATM network, Essentials of ATM Networks and Services begins with an overview of the technology and then provides an explanation of the services defined for ATM. Developed from an author-taught introductory course on ATM networks and services, this book covers every aspect of ATM while focusing primarily on the servicesthe various ways of handling information throughout a network. Some of the services included are: ATM LAN emulation; IP over ATM; multiprotocol over ATM; frame-based access services; audiovisual multimedia services over ATM; inverse multiplexing over ATM; and circuit emulation service. In addition, the author addresses the impact of IP switching and XDSL, technologies that have been developed since the introduction of ATM. You will learn how they affect ATM services and what challenges they pose to the network. Whether you are using IP over ATM, multiprotocol over ATM, PNNI, LAN emulation, or traffic management, this book is more than an excellent ATM reference: It clearly explains ATM technology and implementation to anyone involved in the design, deployment, or support of a corporate ATM network.

I think... 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is pretty good to study DSP with C language. It contains many practical example C source code but this book has many misprint I'll expect that misprint will correct next edition!

I'm studying EE couse in Chung-Ang Univ. at Seoul Korea.

This book is only OK 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is OK. Its not a very good book as an introduction in my opinion. If you are a new student to DSP I would steer clear of this book and get Oppenheim & Schafer or Proakis & Manolakis first. However, if you are looking for practical coding examples for things, this book is VERY good in that regard. It could be useful to the new student as an alternate reference.

Editorial Review:

Modern coverage of the fundamentals, implementation and applications of digital signal processing techniques from a practical point of view. The past ten years has seen a significant growth in DSP applications throughout all areas of technology and this growth is expected well into the next millennium. This successful textbook covers most aspects of DSP found in undergraduate electrical, electronic or communications engineering courses. Unlike many other texts, it also covers a number of DSP techniques which are of particular relevance to industry such as adaptive filtering and multirate processing. The emphasis throughout the book is on the practical aspects of DSP.

Editorial Review:

This introduction to digital data transmission, modulation, and error-correction coding, together with the underlying communication and information theory is an all-inclusive text suitable for all those connected with Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science. Equal emphasis is given to underlying mathematical theory and engineering practice. Not meant to be an encyclopedic treatise, the book offers strong, accessible pedagogy.

This Second Edition presents enhanced explanations of key ideas as well as additional examples and problems. It also provides greatly expanded coverage of wireless communication, which has seen exponential growth since the release of the first edition.

  • A pedagogocal approach aimed at the 5th year EE student
  • A balance of theory with engineering and design
  • Integration of important topics such as synchronization, radio channels, and wireless communication, which are left out of competing books, or lost in more lengthy formats.

Editorial Review:

Networking books come in two basic flavors: Platform-neutral and vendor-specific. Nortel Networks: The Complete Reference takes mainly the latter approach, explaining how data moves across (and among) networks based on Nortel equipment, including those products Nortel acquired when it bought Bay Networks.

There's rather a lot of theory and quite a number of universal truths mixed in with the Nortel information. For that reason, and because author James Knapp's presentation style is so strong, you're likely to derive value from this work even if you use other companies' hardware and software. Knapp's coverage runs the gamut from local Ethernet to Layer 3 switching, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and internetworking, so there's something here for network engineers in organizations large and small.

Knapp's approach is unfailingly practical, always considering real-life situations and the best way to derive maximum performance from real networks. To this end, he's included numerous anecdotes from his time spent as a Nortel engineer, and he's provided conceptual background with excellent diagrams in many cases.

You'll particularly love this book if you own one of the Nortel products--listed below--that Knapp thoroughly investigates. For each covered product, you get a highly detailed look at its capabilities, appropriate use, and management specifics--all in an easy-to-follow style. For a shop that uses Nortel network equipment, this book should be required documentation. --David Wall

Topics covered: Theory of Ethernet and the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) reference model, Ethernet implementations (with emphasis on BayStack, Centillion, and LattisSpan equipment), Layer 3 switching with Accelar gear, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) concepts (including Quality of Service and Private Network-to-Network Interfaces), ATM as implemented under the Centillion series, and internetwork routing with Nortel routers.

A book with lots of disappointments. 2 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The author published two books almost at the same time, one is "Electronic Communications Systems: Fundamentals through Advanced", and the other one is this book. I did not realize that this book is a subset of the former one (from Chapter 12 to Chapter 20) until I bought one. So if you are interested in electronic communications, you don't have to buy this book. Go ahead to purchase the former one.

Title and Edition Confusion 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There seems to be some communication error involved with Amazon's printed title and edition number and the actual title and edition number illustrated. I have purchased the book pictured and can tell you that the book is in fact entitled "Electronic Communications Systems Fundamentals Through Advanced, 5th Edition". It contains chapters 1 - 26 covering everything from electronic communications and modulation to SMA, microwave, cellular, fiber optics and data networking. If you previously owned the 4th edition I can tell you that some material has been added and some of the chapters have been rearranged. This is a great book for beginners and advanced comm students.

Editorial Review:

For junior/senior-level courses in Advanced Topics in Electronic Communications.Comprehensive in scope and contemporary in coverage, this text explores modern digital and data communications systems, microwave radio communications systems, satellite communications systems, and optical fiber communications systems. This text is the last 10 chapters from the Tomasi Electronic Communication Systems: Fundamental Through Advanced, 4/e.

The material in this book is outdated. 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

The material in this book is outdated, although more conceptually than technically. Much of the technical information still holds true, but the conceptual perspective in which the reader is placed is 5-10 years old. I would not recommend this book as the technical information could be gained from other, more current sources.

Editorial Review:

The most complete and authoritative exploration of ISDN, this book provides unrivaled coverage of ISDN, broadband ISDN (B-ISDN), Signaling System Number 7 (SS7), and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). The book also presents a discussion of frame relay that incorporates the most important advances in both technology and standards in this area crucial to ISDN and private networks.

Editorial Review:

The four short years since Digital Communication over Fading Channels became an instant classic have seen a virtual explosion of significant new work on the subject, both by the authors and by numerous researchers around the world. Foremost among these is a great deal of progress in the area of transmit diversity and space-time coding and the associated multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) channel. This new edition gathers these and other results, previously scattered throughout numerous publications, into a single convenient and informative volume.

Like its predecessor, this Second Edition discusses in detail coherent and noncoherent communication systems as well as a large variety of fading channel models typical of communication links found in the real world. Coverage includes single- and multichannel reception and, in the case of the latter, a large variety of diversity types. The moment generating function (MGF)-based approach for performance analysis, introduced by the authors in the first edition and referred to in literally hundreds of publications, still represents the backbone of the book's presentation. Important features of this new edition include:

  • An all-new, comprehensive chapter on transmit diversity, space-time coding, and the MIMO channel, focusing on performance evaluation
  • Coverage of new and improved diversity schemes
  • Performance analyses of previously known schemes in new and different fading scenarios
  • A new chapter on the outage probability of cellular mobile radio systems
  • A new chapter on the capacity of fading channels
  • And much more

Digital Communication over Fading Channels, Second Edition is an indispensable resource for graduate students, researchers investigating these systems, and practicing engineers responsible for evaluating their performance.

A very good book. It explains 3G and related fields 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It's a very good book, it presents 3g concepts as well as other wireless networks. It has some practical examples, which makes complex concepts more clear. For a deep explanation of CDMA concepts and mathematics, you would need another book, but with this one you can get a more practical approach to CDMA. After reading this book, you would have a very precise idea of what is next in telecommunicactions. I think is a good book, though, is highly recommendable to also get UMTS and CDMA2000 specification, they are available for free.

Editorial Review:

For upper level undergraduate and graduate level Electrical, Telecommunications, and Computer Engineering courses that cover wireless network technology and its applications. The book is also essential as a reference by practicing telecommunication engineers involved in the design of cellular/PCS systems, as well as by telecommunication managers responsible for 3G systems, from the United States and Europe to developing countries. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the basic theory and fundamental technology behind wireless networks as well as the practical applications of that technology in real-world wireless networks.
