Editorial Review:

This is the most authoritative, complete source of test and measurement information for engineers who design and maintain fiber optic networks. This book presents measurement principles for characterizing all three basic components of a fiber optic communication system: the optical transmitter, fiber medium and optical receiver. It also covers system level measurements, and discusses the principles and limitations of current fiber optic testing equipment. It discusses testing to SONET/SDH international standards, and helps engineers choose the best approach to testing today's new erbium doped fiber amplifiers. The book provides detailed recommendations for understanding polarization states, and presents new methods for accurately characterizing the behavior of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) fiber systems. It includes detailed coverage of testing fiber in the local loop, using optical power meters and optical time domain reflectometers. It also reviews the latest state-of-the-art 10 Gb/s systems, and even faster systems on the horizon. The coverage is practical, helping professionals accurately measure and test fiber optic systems without becoming experts in theory.

Editorial Review:

The first edition of Optical Networks: A Practical Perspective accumulated lots of happy readers, largely because the authors took care to explain the physical phenomena that allow light to carry information, as well as the design principles that characterize good optical networks, particularly wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Very little was assumed, and even the most complicated formulas appeared alongside annotations that shed light (sorry) on the behavior being described. The latest edition of the book has everything that made the first edition great--the physics haven't changed much, after all--as well as up-to-date information about networking equipment and techniques. The second edition is a first-class revision; you'll want it even if you already own the old version.

Fully half of this book has more to do with network engineering than with theoretical matters. The authors take care to discuss all aspects of optical data communications with efficiency (in terms of capacity utilization, management effort, and monetary cost) in mind. There's not a lot of discussion of vendors' specific products, so you'll have to look elsewhere for configuration instructions. But for getting your network designed and understanding how its components communicate data and provide redundancy--as well as for providing reference to other authoritative works--this book is tops. --David Wall

Topics covered: Tools and technologies for communicating data (including digitized voice signals) over fiber-optic cables. SONET gets a lot of attention, as does wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) as a technique for increasing capacity. Network design--with an eye toward efficiency and survivability--is dealt with in authoritative detail.

Author's conversational style works! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am not going to give a long winded review. I just wanted to take a few minutes and express my gratitude to this author by reviewing his text. I am a programmer turned sales weasel! I needed a book that provided a good grounding in this field. I was blessed to find Bob Elsenpeter's text. Why? He has an intuitive approach. So many author's lose me due to style. Here is a perfect example of Bob's style. On page 104 Bob explains that Ethernet is ubiquitus but NOT that efficient due to collision avoidance requirements - and uses a maximum of 37% of raw wire speed. Bob goes on to decribe the advantages of ATM. Then Bob writes "If ATM is so much better than other network protocols, why aren't all networks running it?" (The answer, for those of you that care, is tolerance for latency.) But my point is that Bob intuitively understands exactly what his students are wondering. Which by itself is not so unique. However, what is unique is that Bob ACKNOWLEDGES his reader's thoughts more often than not. Thank you Bob for having such acute empathy. Don't stop writing!

Editorial Review:

Explained in easy-to-understand language and offering hundreds of figures and illustrations, this book offers a thorough grounding in optical networking. It includes in-depth information about the roots and theory behind optical networking and practical information about optical hardware and software vendors. The guide explains complex concepts, including optical networking, SONET and multiplexing in easy-to-understand language. It also covers Cisco, Nortel and Juniper Certifications and contains hundreds of figures and illustrations along with 16 blueprints that map out sample optical network designs and concepts using different hardware and software products. Because this is a beginner's guide, the blueprints help deliver the information by putting it into a visual context.

Editorial Review:

Tomorrow's "best-of-breed" networks will combine fiber optics with Internet protocols to deliver unprecedented performance and manageability. Next Generation Optical Networks is the first comprehensive guide to optical IP networks for both the electrical and data networking engineers who must work together to build them. In this book, two Cisco engineers who are pioneering optical IP networking review the field from each key perspective: today's emerging standards, the state of the technology, and new enterprise and service provider applications. The authors show how Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) will enable powerful traffic engineering on optical IP networks. In particular, Next Generation Optical Networking presents an in-depth examination of the emerging Multiprotocol Lambda Switching Model (MPLms): its architecture, elements, and its role in real-time lightpath provisioning. The book also includes several detailed application case studies. For data networking engineers who understand IP and need to learn optical networking; and for electrical engineers who need to learn how to build IP intelligence into fiber optic networks.

Reviewer from Academic / Technical sector 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Having read the book, I tend to agree with the first two reviewers since most of the Free-Space technology is distorted to suit the authors' products. I disagree with the last reviewer from New York. More accurate FSO references exist for research, academic and development purposes. It depends on the reader ethical technical standard to select the appropriate sources. With less than three months of publishing, the book is already on the used book list....

This book is for academics and networkers alike 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are interested in knowing more about a technology that delivers optical bandwidth via infrared lasers through free space, this book is for you. It contains extensive technical information and telecommunications material for both researchers and network professionals. I know of no other single source that provides this much depth and content about free space optics.

Editorial Review:

Free Space Optics will begin with the fundamentals of the technology before launching into FSO topologies, deployment issues, applications, and case studies.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of optical detection theory

Laser system applications are becoming more numerous, particularly in the fields of communications and remote sensing. Filling a significant gap in the literature, Optical Detection Theory for Laser Applications addresses the theoretical aspects of optical detection and associated phenomenologies, describing the fundamental optical, statistical, and mathematical principles of the modern laser system.

The book is especially valuable for its extensive treatment of direct detection statistics, which has no analog in radar detection theory and which has never before been compiled in a cohesive manner in a single book. Coverage includes:
* A review of mathematical statistics and statistical decision theory
* Performance of truncated and untruncated coherent and direct detection systems using Huygens-Fresnel and Gaussian beam theories
* Rough surface scatter and atmospheric propagation effects
* Single-pulse detection statistics for direct and coherent detection systems
* Multi-pulse detection statistics for direct and coherent detection systems

Supported by additional comments providing further insights into the physics or mathematics discussed and an extensive list of classic references, Optical Detection Theory for Laser Applications comprises a much-needed reference for the professional scientist or engineer, as well as a solid textbook for advanced students.
