Just Buy The Weekend Navigtor 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

When this book was published I gave it a quick look in our library and bought it. I use it in an Electronic Navigation class I teach at a local ASA Sailing School. It is the best in its field, very understandable, gorgeous illustrations and it is one of the best manuals for Maptech Chart Navigator which they provide free on the accompanying CD.
There is nothing close to this book.

Editorial Review:

Can piloting a boat really be this easy?

Traditional navigation with its chart plotting, compass errors, and current vectors requires years to master. Serious boaters learn it eventually, but with $100 GPS receivers offering 50-foot position accuracy anywhere in the world, it’s no longer necessary to master the art before enjoying the sport. The Weekend Navigator is the first book to recognize that affordable, simple-to-use electronics demand a radically new approach to teaching navigation. Bob Sweet lets you find your way on the water immediately, learning by rather than before doing.

This innovative guide’s quick-reference format shows you how to:

  • Pinpoint locations at all times
  • Determine the precise ranges and bearings of destinations
  • Compensate for wind and current effects
  • Avoid underwater hazards

Editorial Review:

Combining the data from 18 of the most advanced Earth satellites ever built, NASA has constructed the most detailed global portrait of our planet ever created. "The Complete Earth" reproduces this photomap in its entirety and at full-resolution, living up to its title by revealing the whole planet, cloud-free, at a resolution of 500m to every pixel, or 90 miles to every inch. At this scale we can trace the Amazon from Andean headwaters to Atlantic mouth, or explore the trackless sand seas of the Sahara, or follow the corrugated ridges of hills and mountains that mark the front line of India's tectonic assault on Eurasia as if we were in low-Earth orbit. These images are supplemented by a wealth of even higher resolution satellite imagery that zooms in on noteworthy features - from volcanoes to cities, river deltas to glaciers. In addition, 12 double-page-spreads chart one year in the life of our planet as they follow the ebb and flow of the seasons across the globe: we watch snow fall in the North as it melts in the South, and desert lands bloom and fade as the rains come and go. Accompanying the images, a brief but informative text explores the history of each landscape, explaining the how and when of its mountain ranges, deserts and plains.

This is simply a classic text 5 out of 5 stars.

I hesitated a bit before purchasing this book because of the price and my relative inexperience in this field. It is indeed a classic textbook because it begins every topic with a clear explanation of the underlying theory and its importance in understanding satellite communications. The authors have also provided chapter-end exercises to reinforce the key points. Though my college degree is in Chemistry and never had any class in engineering or computer science, the concepts are well understood. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good theoretical knowledge of satellite communication technology

Editorial Review:

Explains the reasons, limitations and trade-offs inherent to communications satellites. The first half deals with link power budgets as well as communications hardware and examples of complete link budgets. Spacecraft technology and a description of the objectives and basic operating methods of each of the major supporting subsystems are covered in the last half. Contains end-of-chapter exercises and solutions.

An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

Editorial Review:

An essential overview of satellite communications from the organization that sets the international standards

Since their introduction in the mid-1960s, satellite communications have grown from a futuristic experiment into an integral part of today's "wired world." Satellite communications are at the core of a global, automatically switched telephony network. Assembled by the International Telecommunication Union--the international organization that sets the standards for this rapidly growing industry--the Handbook on Satellite Communications, Third Edition brings together basic facts about satellite communications as related to the fixed-satellite service (FSS). It covers the main principles, technologies, and operation of equipment in a tutorial form.

Updated to include the latest technologies and information, the Third Edition provides both the standards and technical information needed to implement and interact with satellite communication systems, including:

* The components and basic characteristics of a satellite communication system

* Regulatory considerations and system planning

* SDH and ATM satellite transmissions

* Analog and digital baseband signal processing and multiplexing

* Carrier modulation techniques

* Geostationary and non-geostationary systems

* Interconnection of satellite and terrestrial networks

* LEOS satellite networks and other recent developments

As digital modulation and transmission replace analog techniques, and as satellites in non-geostationary and lower-altitude orbits open the way to new applications, satellite communications will continue to grow in use and importance. Everyone involved in the administration and operation of satellite communications will find this a crucial resource.
