Editorial Review:

CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, 2nd Edition, is unique in that it offers practical guidance for managing various aspects of radiation protection programs ranging from the daily operation of a health physics office to the preparation of radiation experts for court appearances as professional witnesses. The book also covers such topics as organization and management of nonionizing radiation safety programs (with special emphasis on laser safety programs) and management of radioactive waste, personnel monitoring programs, radiation accident victims, internal exposure, relative radiotoxicity and radiation therapy patients. Other chapters discuss handling radiation accidents and education and training requirements for radiation protection. Legal aspects covered in the book include the history of radiation court cases, legal implications of record keeping, and preparation for court appearances. CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, 2nd Edition will be a valuable reference resource for medical and health physicists, industrial hygienists, physicians, nuclear engineers, radiation protection regulators, radiation emergency management agents, radiation safety committees, and managers of facilities using ionizing and nonionizing radiation sources.

Are We Forgetting the Final Warning? 4 out of 5 stars.

Chernobyl was one of the most horrible disasters in human history. It was a galvanizing event in my life. It made me very active and pushed me to learn and aprticipate far more than I ever imagined prior to it -- a defining event much like the Tianamen Square massacre was.

As soon as it came out I read and reviewed Dr. Gayle's book Final Warning. It is a gut-wrenching read and an invaluable eye-witness account of this terrible nuclear disaster. It is very informative and also extremely moving. When you think of the legacy this event will have on an entire generation of children, it is frightening.

Even more frightening, however, is the fact that many seem to have forgotten the lesson this book and Chernobyl teaches the world. There is a renewed push now, because of high gas prices, to start building new reactors in every community.

Please read this excellent resource and educate yourself to the potential dangers.

Interesting as a personal story 3 out of 5 stars.

The book is a personal account by an American doctor, specializing in leukemia and treating it with bone marrow transplantation, who organizes and leads a cooperative effort with the Soviets to help treat some of the immediate victims. There is little technical background or analysis about the disaster itself or the Soviet response. As the book was written soon after the disaster, there is naturally no coverage of the long-term consequences and management.

As a personal story, it's fairly interesting, and has the advantage that the author is an American but as a doctor (and not connected with the American government) was on friendly, non-polarized terms with the Soviets. In fact, he had an interview with Gorbachev. To learn more about Chernobyl, the response, political meaning, consequences, and so on, you'll want to look elsewhere.

Introduction to nuclear energy 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 44 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Asimov has taken a difficult subject and made it interesting and easy to read. Even those who aren't science students will find this book about the universe around us dramatic and entertaining. I just wish there were a way to give this book 10 stars instead of only 5.

Perfect for junior & senior high school students 5 out of 5 stars.

Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) had a brilliant career as a scientist, teacher, and writer. Best known for his science fiction novels and stories, he also wrote poetry and nonfiction, and prepared guides to several important literary works

Editorial Review:

The Story of Nuclear Energy: Worlds Within Worlds covers the entire story of nuclear energy from a basic explanation of atomic weights, energy and electricity to nuclear fission, fusion - beyond. First coming to public consciousness as The Bomb that ended World War II, it is now the forefront of our attention as a source of peacetime energy, whether from nuclear power plants or from the sun.

In the last 20 years, Isaac Asimov has written more than 150 books, including science fiction and many technical guides to scientific subjects. His prodigious output has made him one of America's favorite interpreters of the roles of science and technology in shaping man's destiny.

Editorial Review:

Plutonium and highly enriched uranium (HEU) are the basic materials used in nuclear weapons. Plutonium also plays an important part in the generation of nuclear electricity. Knowing how much plutonium and HEU exists, where and in which form is vital for international security and nuclear commerce. This book is a thorough revision of the World Inventory of Plutonium and highly Enriched Uranium, 1992. It provides a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of the amounts of plutonium and HEU in military and civilian programmes, in nuclear and non-nuclear weapon states, and in countries seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. The capibilities that exist for producing these materials around the world are examined in depth, as are the policy issues raised by them. Containing much new information, this book is indispensable to all those concerned with the great contemporary issues in international nuclear relations: arms reductions in the nuclear weapon states, nuclear proliferation, nuclear smuggling, the roles of plutonium and enriched uranium in the nuclear fuel-cycle, and the disposition of surplus weapon material.

Editorial Review:

This book provides critical analysis and historical evidence to refute the claims of the nuclear power industry that nuclear power can alleviate the build-up of greenhouse gases and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. It also reveals the hazards of further proliferation of nuclear weapons from the growing quantities of plutonium generated by existing nuclear power plants throughout the world.

Prepared under the auspices of a scientifically respected institute, "The Nuclear Power Deception" exposes the flagrant misrepresentation of nuclear power as "to cheap to meter" and environmentally benign and safe by government and industry officials in the 1940s and 1950s when they had ample evidence to the contrary. Instead they suppressed that evidence, much of which is presented in this book.

Essential background reading for students, teachers, peace and environmental activists, and others concerned about the threat nuclear power continues to pose for the future of humankind.

Editorial Review:

The late 1960s saw an extraordinary growth in the American nuclear industry: dozens of plants of unprecedented size were ordered throughout the country. Yet at the same time, public concern about the natural environment and suspicion of both government and industry increased dramatically. Containing the Atom is the first scholarly history of nuclear power regulation during those tumultuous years.
J. Samuel Walker focuses on the activities of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the agency entrusted with the primary responsibility for the safety of nuclear power, and shows that from the beginning the AEC faced a paradox: it was charged with both promoting and controlling the nuclear power industry. Out of this paradox grew severe tensions, which Walker discusses in detail. His balanced evaluation of the issues and the positions taken by the AEC and others makes this study an invaluable resource for all those interested in the continuing controversies that surround nuclear energy.
