Resource and guidelines with a coherent approach 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

There are literally hundreds of good books on proposal writing, but only a tiny handful on writing RFPs. From among the handful this book stands out for a number of reasons:

(1) It clearly described the RFP process from start to finish - and RFP development is a process with a defined life cycle.

(2) The author goes well beyond the immediate objective of writing an RFP and managing the process by including thought-provoking material on post-award vendor management. This material sometimes escapes the RFP development team who is more focused on getting to the award milestone without thinking about the post-award ramifications.

(3) It's not boring - the writing is lively, and the material is presented at a fast pace. The pace, however, does not leave gaps. Every facet of the RFP process is covered in sufficient detail.

In addition to the above, the approach set forth in this book is consistent with best practices in RFP development. I especially like the copious checklists, the RFP roadmap, and the way illustrations are skillfully used to reinforce concepts and advice.

Note that the focus of this book is information technology and software acquisition. Some of the material is unique to those domains; however, the basic principles and RFP process can be used for virtually any type of RFP, from office services to purchasing furniture.

Overall, this is the one book I recommend for RFP development. If you are an IT professional, regardless of role, the chances are you will be involved in this process at some point in your career, making this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have recently been assigned to an RFP team you should get this book as soon as possible, and use it as your compass and blueprint if your organization does not already have a formal RFP process in place.

Editorial Review:

Offers a systematic, comprehensive, and professional approach to writing RFPs. Guides you step by step through the RFP process, from initial planning through selecting the winning proposal, demonstrating the most effective ways of structuring the document and expressing technical, administrative, and financial requirements. Softcover.

Theoretical Neurosciences from a Computational Perspective 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This text will become a standard course book for Graduate Schools in Computational Neurosciences. You need to know advanced engineering mathematics & probability theory to be able to understand this book. Dayan & Abbott model primary visual cortical, MT, LIP, and Motor cortical neurons as single units, but also as populations (clusters) of firing cells. They discuss Bayes Theorem, probability theory as it applies to the brain, and parietal lobe function as well. They derive all the equations associated with these models for the student so that more advanced parts of the book are comprehensible. The book is not meant to be a general Neuroscience book, but rather a course book about neuronal modeling, computational neurobiology, and neural engineering. It serves these three purposes well. In my opinion, this is the best written account of neuron modeling out there for the graduate student and researcher. Methods in Neuronal Modeling by Christof Koch is the other great book on this subject. If you own these two books you should be able to advance in high level neural modelling. There are numerous equations and formulae of interest throughout each chapter in these two volumes. The price of 39.00 USD for the hardcover is really quite a bargain.

Editorial Review:

Theoretical neuroscience provides a quantitative basis for describing what nervous systems do, determining how they function, and uncovering the general principles by which they operate. This text introduces the basic mathematical and computational methods of theoretical neuroscience and presents applications in a variety of areas including vision, sensory-motor integration, development, learning, and memory.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the relationship between sensory stimuli and neural responses, focusing on the representation of information by the spiking activity of neurons. Part II discusses the modeling of neurons and neural circuits on the basis of cellular and synaptic biophysics. Part III analyzes the role of plasticity in development and learning. An appendix covers the mathematical methods used, and exercises are available on the book's Web site.

A good data structures book??? 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've had to read parts of other data structures books, and they've all been terrible. With this book, for the first time, I felt that the author was successful in clearly demonstrating the topics at hand. The examples and text are very clear and easy to understand. My only issue is that it's shallow in some areas. For example, the Balanced Trees section covers 2-3 trees and 2-3-4 trees, but only glosses over AVL and Red-Black trees. These topics are covered in the class I'm taking right now, so I was somewhat dismayed that I had to turn to online resources for these. That said, I'm very glad the professor chose this book over any other!

Editorial Review:

The second edition, in Java, of the classic Walls and Mirrors approach to programming designs solutions to problems using both data abstraction (the walls) and recursion (the Mirrors). Data Abstraction and Problem Solving with Java: Walls and Mirrors, 2e provides a focus on the important concepts of data abstraction and data structures in a way that beginning students find accessible. The book has a student-friendly pedagogical approach, that carefully accounts for the strengths and weaknesses of the Java language. This second edition includes more material on the Java language and increased focus on object-oriented programming ideas.

Worst Book Ever!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We are at chapter 13 now and I now know that the book do not provide good fundamentals nor details to understand what FEA is all about. Tutorials are useless because they do not explain anything what's going on. You just must figure it out yourself. This is OK for secondary book. But don't expect to understand it without any other help. Choppy steps for the solution in the examples!

I love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I can't imagine my learning process of FEA without this book. It's really good and comprenhensive. It is nice to read and it provides clear explanations to difficult topics. I believe this is a must have!

Editorial Review:

Unique in approach and content, this book presents the theory of finite element analysis, explores its application as a design/modeling tool, and explains in detail how to use ANSYS intelligently and effectively. This book covers trusses; axial members, beams, and frames; one-dimensional elements; two-dimensional elements; three-dimensional elements; dynamic problems; design and material selection; design optimization; and more. For Design Engineers in CAE-CAD.

Editorial Review:

In complex software projects, managing the development process can be as critical to success as writing the code itself. A project may involve dozens of developers, managers, architects, testers, and customers, hundreds of builds, and thousands of opportunities to get off-track. To keep tabs on the people, tasks, and components of a medium- to large-scale project, most teams use a development system that allows for easy monitoring, follow-up, and accountability.

Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2008 (TFS), the server component of Microsoft's Visual Studio Team System (VSTS), provides a powerful collaborative platform for software-development teams. The product offers an integrated toolset for tracking work items, creating test cases, managing source code, generating builds, constructing database schemas, and so on. Because in software development one size does not fit all, TFS provides process customization, project management, and reporting capabilities to build solutions around your requirements.

Team Foundation Server 2008 in Action is a hands-on guide to Team Foundation Server 2008. Written for developers with a good handle on TFS basics, this book shows you how to solve real-life problems. It's not a repetition of Microsoft's product documentation. Team Foundation Server 2008 in Action is a practitioner's handbook for how to work with TFS under common constraints. This book walks you through real-life software engineering problems based on hundreds of hours of TFS experience.

You'll benefit from expert author Jamil Azher's extensive interactions with members of Microsoft's TFS team and MVPs, survey feedback from the author's blog, and interviews with organizations and user groups using TFS. Instead of just offering a high-level overview, the book provides detailed solutions for solving common-and not-so-common-problems using TFS. It discusses the strengths as well as weaknesses of TFS, and suggests appropriate problem resolution steps, workarounds, or custom solutions.
