Editorial Review:

"....it’s nice to see a level design book that treats design as more than just theory...this book really gets down to how to do things right." —Christian Bradley Game Art and Design, Art Institute of San Diego

As a level designer in the game industry you can determine exactly what the player sees, hears, and feels in the game. The reward of seeing your game on a store shelf or hearing people talk about one of your levels is an incredibly fulfilling experience. If this is a path you want to take, Game Level Design will show you the way. This book is about the fundamentals of level design: it teaches you common procedures for designing, drafting, and creating interactive environments for games. It explains what level design is, where it came from, and, most important, how to plan, design, and construct levels professionally for modern-day computer and video games.

Throughout the book, practical explanations and demonstrations use the basic, advanced, and real-world techniques needed to create game levels for hit titles. It also uses historical examples, interviews with outstanding level designers, and a focus on professional level design, to teach game developers of all levels, from amateur "mod" mappers to seasoned multi-title veterans, how to implement these techniques into your own projects.

Although the content in the book uses many examples from popular genres, such as first-person shooters (FPS), action adventures, and real-time strategy (RTS) games, the approach is designed to teach level design as a genre- and platform-independent craft. All games need to take place in environments, and by extension, the rules of level design apply to all games to some degree, so with the skills and techniques you learn here, you’ll be ready for any level challenge.

Highlights: * Teaches the level design process, approaches, and team issues * Includes first-hand experiences and interviews with level designers * Provides an invaluable resource for level design beginners * Deals with some advanced and theoretical methodologies in level design * Uses popular tools throughout the examples with an emphasis on UnrealEd * Covers many genres and platforms and provides actual documentation from published titles, including a case study of the CIA Level from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell * Includes a CD-ROM with the level files from the book, the Unreal 2 Runtime Demo, and Photoshop CS trial version

On the CD! * Photoshop® CS trial version * Unreal 2 Runtime –Demo Free demo of the acclaimed Unreal Engine and level editor used to create diverse titles such as Unreal Tournament 2003, Splinter Cell, Thief 3, Republic Commandos, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Lineage 2 * Terragen™ - Free version of the classic shareware program that generates realistic looking skies and landscapes for use in game levels * OpenOffice.org – The free and fully featured open-source office suite with everything a level designer needs for documentation and design communication * All images, textures, and environments used to create the illustrations in the book, along with sample documents

Interesting 4 out of 5 stars.
26 of 28 people found this review helpful.

As the title suggests the book discusses various approaches to program analysis and it discusses these approaches is pretty good detail, though purely theoretical with small WHILE languages. It would have helped to have used a real live example by considering a small chunk of any of the generally used languages. It has good appendices that covers on some mathematical concepts but be warned you need know your math, the kind described in Glynn winskel or John reynolds book, before you dig into this one.

I rate it as 4 star as it gives the information on how to approach program analysis from the theoretical side. Also, reading it made my life easy when working with some code on flow analysis. I would say it definitely requires 2 readings for the info to settle inside. The appendix on Partially Ordered Sets is much more comprehendable than in Winskel.

In simple words, if u r good at theoritcal math used with languages and are interested in implementing and understanding various analysis that can be performed on programs then this is book would be a great aid.

Editorial Review:

Program analysis concerns static techniques for computing reliable approximate information about the dynamic behaviour of programs. Applications include compilers (for code improvement), software validation (for detecting errors in algorithms or breaches of security) and transformations between data representation (for solving problems such as the Y2K problem). This book is unique in giving an overview of the four major approaches to program analysis: data flow analysis, constraint based analysis, abstract interpretation, and type and effect systems. The presentation demonstrates the extensive similarities between the approaches; this will aid the reader in choosing the right approach and in enhancing it with insights from the other approaches. The book covers basic semantic properties as well as more advanced algorithmic techniques. The book is aimed at M.Sc. and Ph.D. students but will be valuable also for experienced researchers and professionals.

Excellent organization 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found the book to be very helpful during my undergraduate courses. As a masters student, I still refer to the book. It gives very good explanations to the basic operation of various op-amp circuits. Together with the well written explanations, the diagrams themselves are self-explanatory.

Generally a well organized and written book!

Editorial Review:

The best-seller of op-amps courses, this text examines four basic active filters, illustrates 5-V digital logic ICs, and more.

Excellent book! A "must have" to all CS and EE professionals! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is the most comprehensive book ever written on digital logic and computer fundamentals. There is no other way to put it.

I graduated with a CS degree five years ago, and we used "Structured Computer Organization" by Andrew Tanenbaum for class. I feel that the negative reviews written on this book should instead apply to Tanenbaum's.

This is the book we should have used for class in the first place. Here I am five years after graduating, and, only now, after reading this book, I am beginning to fully understand how all the internals of a digital computer work and fit together.

I have no affiliation with the authors nor am I in academia to have any reason defend it. But rather, I am defending it for the wealth of information that was put in it. This is information that is paramount to every CS and EE student/professional.

I bought this book on my own, for self development, and have read most chapters. I had no trouble following the explanations. The authors give the motivation for the study right at the beginning of each chapter, so that readers/students would look ahead and anticipate where and how the concepts and techniques will be used (and where does it apply/fit within the general purpose computer). They first give an overview and then delve into it deeper. I believe that everything should be taught that way, so that people can actually learn what was taught, especially when learning how computers tick.

I have to admit, however, that some of the concepts might be a little advanced if you are just starting to learn about computers. That's why I think that if this book is used in class at some university, it should be taught in two semesters - in order to cover everything thoroughly. There is much and too good-of-information to pass up, to cover the book only partially.

Don't get discouraged when reading this book and find that you don't understand some concepts. Find another lower level explanation to it from a different source, understand it, and then return to the book again and continue. You will find out that by doing that, going through it and learning concept by concept, you will gain an enormous amount of knowledge.

Editorial Review:

Providing solid digital system design fundamentals while accomplishing a gradual, bottom-up development of these fundamentals, this book focuses on the ever-evolving applications of basic computer design concepts. Treatment of logic design, digital system design, and computer design. Ideal for self-study by engineers and computer scientists.

Editorial Review:

A new approach to the study of arithmetic circuits

In Synthesis of Arithmetic Circuits: FPGA, ASIC and Embedded Systems, the authors take a novel approach of presenting methods and examples for the synthesis of arithmetic circuits that better reflects the needs of today's computer system designers and engineers. Unlike other publications that limit discussion to arithmetic units for general-purpose computers, this text features a practical focus on embedded systems.

Following an introductory chapter, the publication is divided into two parts. The first part, Mathematical Aspects and Algorithms, includes mathematical background, number representation, addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, other arithmetic operations, and operations in finite fields. The second part, Synthesis of Arithmetic Circuits, includes hardware platforms, general principles of synthesis, adders and subtractors, multipliers, dividers, and other arithmetic primitives. In addition, the publication distinguishes itself with:
* A separate treatment of algorithms and circuits-a more useful presentation for both software and hardware implementations
* Complete executable and synthesizable VHDL models available on the book's companion Web site, allowing readers to generate synthesizable descriptions
* Proposed FPGA implementation examples, namely synthesizable low-level VHDL models for the Spartan II and Virtex families
* Two chapters dedicated to finite field operations

This publication is a must-have resource for students in computer science and embedded system designers, engineers, and researchers in the field of hardware and software computer system design and development.

A helpful book to understand semiconductor model 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Spice is a software package that become a de facto standar in circuit simulation. But as in any other circuit simulator we need to define the accurate input model to get the accurate results. And this book describe in more detail the components that is used in almost any electronic circuit, i.e. semiconductor devices. The value that is a credit point for this book is not just how detail the description of the semiconductor model is in order to get the accurate parameters but also how to use those parameters in Spice. So, for you who new to this circuit simulator there is no need to worry because this book explain how the circuit model is built using Spice. And for you who need the basic theory of semiconductor model the book gives two nice appendices on that one. One chapter that is need to be explored in more detail is about noise and distortion (hopefully in the next edition the editor could have more on that topic). Finally, this is a "must be read" book for you who want to get excellent results in modelling electronic circuit.

Editorial Review:

With all the clarity and hands-on practicality of the best-selling first edition, this revised version explains the ins and outs of SPICE, plus gives new data on modeling advanced devices such as MESFETs, ISFETs, and thyristors. And because it's the only book that describes the models themselves, it helps readers gain maximum value from SPICE, rather than just telling them how to run the program. This guide is also distinctive in covering both MOS and FET models. Step by step, it takes the reader through the modeling process, providing complete information on a variety of semiconductor devices for designing specific circuit applications. These include: Pn junction and Schottky diodes; bipolar junction transistor (BJT); junction field effect transistor (JFET); metal oxide semiconductor transistor (MOST); metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET); ion sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET); semiconductor controlled rectifier (SCR-thyristor).

Robust treatment of fuzzy logic has interdisciplinary appeal 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

George and Bo have been as thorough and lucid in preparing this book as well as George explicated systems thinking in the very first book of his I read, "An Approach to General Systems Theory." Here, as there, without compromising mathematical rigor, the goal of this book is to elaborate its subject matter in such a robust manner that it has multidisciplinary appeal. As always, the reader is given a flexible, almost interactive, access to the what, why and how of fuzzy thinking. Despite the exception taken by Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh, the "founder of fuzzy logic," the percipient reader will appreciate the authors' unusual association of "fuzzy measure," that is, the degree of belief that a particular element belongs to a crisp set, (not the degree of membership in the set), with Possibility Theory so as to clarify the differences between fuzzy set theory and probability theory. The illustrative applications are not only case studies that one may pick and choose from for examination and emulation but also constitute incontrovertible evidence of the successful and promising realization of the fuzzy paradigm. As a former professor of engineering at Rutgers University, I found the 79-page Instructor's manual helpful for self- or extended study and I assume it would be valuable for teaching. I have read many books on fuzzy logic and I judge this to be the most balanced to date, (early 1998), - not filled with C++ code or trying to sell a software package nor is it theoretically daunting - it is simply an inviting demonstration of how fuzzy logic clears up foggy modeling and analysis.

Editorial Review:

Provides the reader with comprehensive coverage of theoretical foundations of fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic, as well as a broad overview of the increasingly important applications of these novel areas of mathematics. DLC: Fuzzy sets.

Useful Chronology of Operating Systems & Langusges 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The writer, a NY Times technology correspondent, provides a 250-page chronology of computer operating systems and software languages from the early post-WWII years until 2001. A few important applications such as VisiCalc and Word are also covered. Brief mention is made of hardware trends that created the environment for software engineering.

This is a "people" book. Brief biographical sketches of the key players are followed by a description of the most basic characteristics of each software item and a brief chronology of its emergence into the marketplace. There is little in the way of analysis and little personal opinion.

The book reads like a long Britannica article and is a suitable overview and reference for serious students of technology but more than a little boring for the general reader.

I was surprised that Gary Kildall only received half of one sentence. His Digital Research Company and its early microcomputer operating system, CP/M, was an early business success. A variant of CP/M, Seattle Computer Products 86-DOS, was the backbone of Gates' DOS for the IBM PC.

Editorial Review:

"Go To...is smooth, creamy, entertaining...delightful. It is a sort of Iliad for the computer age."--David Gelernter, New York Times.

In Go To, Steve Lohr chronicles the history of software from the early days of complex mathematical codes mastered by a few thousand to today's era of user-friendly software and over six million professional programmers worldwide. Lohr maps out the unique seductions of programming, and gives us an intimate portrait of the peculiar kind of genius that is drawn to this blend of art, science, and engineering, introducing us to the movers and shakers of the 1950s and the open-source movement of today. With original reporting and deft storytelling, Steve Lohr shows us how software transformed the world, and what it holds in store for our future.
