Academic text, adn some practical advice 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Most texts on knowledge management are strictly theory. This is one of the few that I have seen that has taken a "hands on" approach to KM. Certainly a lofty goal, and the author does a good job trying to reach it, but still falls somewhat short.

The diagrams, checklists, and templates are thought-provoking, and will help you design YOUR KM program. Full lifecycle, thorough, and plenty of case studies. Overall, I'm quite pleased with its content.

One will almost immediately notice the research and writing style--the author is obviously from the academic world.

This book is Weak 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is a poor application of the KM subject. It has non-sensical terms like "knowledge management server" that would only make sense to a Boeing engineer...

Excellent Book for KM practitioners 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a book that makes a good balance between theory and practice. It presents a complete step by step guide to implement KM in your organization.

I recommend it for people who are in charge of a Knowledge Management Project or defining a KM strategy for their organizations. Is not an only "theory" book like most text or articles on knowledge management.

Illustrative book with templates, checklists that can help you organize your KM project.

Editorial Review:

Ontologies provide a common vocabulary of an area and define - with different levels of formality - the meaning of the terms and the relationships between them. Ontologies may be reused and shared across applications and groups Concepts in the ontology are usually organized in taxonomies and relations between concepts, properties of concepts, and axioms are typically used for representing the knowledge contained in ontologies. With the growth of information available, e.g. on the WWW, they are popularly applied in knowledge management, semantic web, natural language generation, enterprise modelling, knowledge-based systems, ontology-based brokers, e-commerce platforms and interoperability between systems. This book looks at questions such as: * What is an ontology? * What are the uses of ontologies? * What types of ontologies exist? What are the most well-known ones? * How do I select the best ontology for my application? * What are the principles for building an ontology? * What methodologies should I use to build my own ontology? Which techniques are appropriate for each step? * How do software tools support the process of building and using ontologies? * What language can I use to implement ontologies? * How can I integrate ontologies in a given language? The book presents the theoretical foundations of ontological engineering and covers the practical aspects of selecting and applying methodologies, tools and languages for building ontologies. The applications of ontologies are also illustrated with case studies taken from the areas of knowledge management, e-commerce and the semantic web.

Editorial Review:

Reasoning about knowledge—particularly the knowledge of agents who reason about the world and each other's knowledge—was once the exclusive province of philosophers and puzzle solvers. More recently, this type of reasoning has been shown to play a key role in a surprising number of contexts, from understanding conversations to the analysis of distributed computer algorithms.

Reasoning About Knowledge is the first book to provide a general discussion of approaches to reasoning about knowledge and its applications to distributed systems, artificial intelligence, and game theory. It brings eight years of work by the authors into a cohesive framework for understanding and analyzing reasoning about knowledge that is intuitive, mathematically well founded, useful in practice, and widely applicable. The book is almost completely self-contained and should be accessible to readers in a variety of disciplines, including computer science, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, and game theory. Each chapter includes exercises and bibliographic notes.

Good, but suffers from unnecessary complexity. 3 out of 5 stars.
41 of 50 people found this review helpful.

I thought the first three chapters did an excellent job of covering advances in knowledge representation. However chapter four is marred by an attempt to present what appears to be virtually every syntax used relating to processes. Somewhere in this gulf of complexity I think he has some basic concepts, but they are hard to reach. It's equivalent to reading a book on algorithms in which the author presents the algorithms in C, Cobol, Fortran, Basic, SAS, etc. Why not just present the concepts within the context of a MINIMUM of syntax? Still the book is worth reading and has good appendixes.

A Unique Contribution 5 out of 5 stars.

In this book, John Sowa conveys diverse and effective insights within the field of knowledge representation (KR). The frameworks he employs are deeply grounded philosphically. (Sowa's previous work on conceptual structures reactivated and extended the innovative work of Charles Sanders Peirce integrating logic and graph theory.) The work reviewed here surveys a wide range of KR issues from basic ontology to agency and processes. Chapter 6, Knowledge Soup, is widely recognized for framing and addressing some of the more demanding, and largely unresolved, challenges in the field.

Throughout the book, issues are explored in a coherent, readable way. Of course, KR implies the use of relevant formalisms, and readers with some background in some AI research tradition will be better prepared to absorb the book's insights. However, for students and scholars looking for an integrated overview, Sowa makes a unique contribution.

Editorial Review:

Sowa integrates logic, philosophy, linguistics, and computer science into this study of knowledge and its various models and implementations. His definitive new book shows how techniques of artificial intelligence, database design, and object-oriented programming help make knowledge explicit in a form that computer systems can use.

An okay starting book on Analysis Services 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I recently bought this book and have read about 7 chapters. The book is useful to get hands-on experience on how the Analysis Manager works. How can you use it to make basic cubes, dimensions etc. Also, there is a couple of chapters on MDX and the MDX sample application that comes with Analysis Services. In general I found the book useful because it made me familiar with the UI of Analysis Manager, but reading the book was hard. True to its name "Step by Step" the book focuses on "How to do things" (like click here , click there, heres the screen shot you should expect to see) without explaining in ANY detail about why you are doing what you are doing. There is no gradual build-up of concepts. If a chapter says it will take you 2.5 hours to complete, it will take that much time because of the step-by-step nature. I personally find this approach hard to follow. I would have liked if the book devoted a few pages in the beginnign of the chapter explaining the concepts and then went on to show you how to do this with the analysis manager.

Editorial Review:

MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 2000 ANALYSIS SERVICES STEP BY STEP is the fast, complete self-training course on the powerful data-analysis services in Microsoft SQL Server 2000. It's designed to quickly show you why multidimensional data cubes are such a powerful, popular analysis method, and teach you the pitfalls and design strategies behind using data-warehousing techniques. The book's easy-to-follow lessons begin with clear objectives and include real-world business examples. All in all, it's the fastest way to become fully conversant with Microsoft Analysis Services and the solutions you can build with them.

Overall good, but not enough 4 out of 5 stars.

I read this book and the Wrox book on MS OLAP. The two books seem to complement each other with some overlaps of course. While this book has many good exmaples on DTS, MDX, and client access to OLAP data, the Wrox book is more organized and has better discussions of OLAP cubes and other aspects of DW as well as a better coverage of MDX. Maybe it is crazy, but it would have been a good idea if the authors of both books combined their efforts and produced one book (wishful thinking).

Editorial Review:

Microsoft OLAP Unleashed offers professional-level expertise and an in-depth explanation of the latest in multidimensional database management. It contains an entire section on MDX, the programming language of OLAP. MS OLAP Unleashed details real-world uses, how to prepare data, and how to implement an OLAP system. Topics include preparing data, creating cubes, using PivotTable Service, OLAP programming, using Excel as client, server security, real-world examples, managing a data warehouse MDX reference, and system.

buying this book! Save your money for the other books.

Editorial Review:

The book is an overview of the development of basic ideas and mathematical results regarding measures and principles of uncertainty-based information formalized within the framework of classical set theory, probability theory, fuzzy set theory, possibility theory, and the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. The book contains many new results, which had until now not been available in a single monograph. The book is very useful for researchers, but it can also be used as a graduate text.

Editorial Review:

This book focuses on various techniques of computational intelligence, both single ones and those which form hybrid methods. Those techniques are today commonly applied issues of artificial intelligence, e.g. to process speech and natural language, build expert systems and robots. The first part of the book presents methods of knowledge representation using different techniques, namely the rough sets, type-1 fuzzy sets and type-2 fuzzy sets. Next various neural network architectures are presented and their learning algorithms are derived. Moreover, the family of evolutionary algorithms is discussed, in particular the classical genetic algorithm, evolutionary strategies and genetic programming, including connections between these techniques and neural networks and fuzzy systems. In the last part of the book, various methods of data partitioning and algorithms of automatic data clustering are given and new neuro-fuzzy architectures are studied and compared.

Editorial Review:

Intelligent decision support relies on techniques from a variety of disciplines, including artificial intelligence and database management systems. Most of the existing literature neglects the relationship between these disciplines. By integrating AI and DBMS, Computational Intelligence for Decision Support produces what other texts don't: an explanation of how to use AI and DBMS together to achieve high-level decision making.Threading relevant disciplines from both science and industry, the author approaches computational intelligence as the science developed for decision support. The use of computational intelligence for reasoning and DBMS for retrieval brings about a more active role for computational intelligence in decision support, and merges computational intelligence and DBMS. The introductory chapter on technical aspects makes the material accessible, with or without a decision support background. The examples illustrate the large number of applications and an annotated bibliography allows you to easily delve into subjects of greater interest. The integrated perspective creates a book that is, all at once, technical, comprehensible, and usable. Now, more than ever, it is important for science and business workers to creatively combine their knowledge to generate effective, fruitful decision support. Computational Intelligence for Decision Support makes this task manageable.

Editorial Review:

Knowledge Cartography is the discipline of mapping intellectual landscapes.

The focus of this book is on the process by which manually crafting interactive, hypertextual maps clarifies one’s own understanding, as well as communicating it.

The authors see mapping software as a set of visual tools for reading and writing in a networked age. In an information ocean, the primary challenge is to find meaningful patterns around which we can weave plausible narratives. Maps of concepts, discussions and arguments make the connections between ideas tangible and disputable.

With 17 chapters from the leading researchers and practitioners, the reader will find the current state–of-the-art in the field. Part 1 focuses on educational applications in schools and universities, before Part 2 turns to applications in professional communities, but with many cross-cutting themes:

• conceptual frameworks for understanding knowledge cartography

• visual languages, many of which work on both paper and with software

• specialist software, much of it freely available and open source

• case studies reflecting on successes and failures

• ways in which maps can be used both effectively and ineffectively

• examples of how to evaluate maps

• visit the website for updates on the field, and extra resources for each chapter:
www.kmi.open.ac.uk/books/knowledge-cartography

Knowledge Cartography will be of interest to learners, educators, and researchers in all disciplines, as well as policy analysts, scenario planners, knowledge managers and team facilitators. Practitioners will find new perspectives and tools to expand their repertoire, while researchers will find rich enough conceptual grounding for further scholarship.
