Awkwardly Romantic 4 out of 5 stars.

This title was an interesting read. I was a little weary at first when reading it, but once I got a sense of the characters i fell in love with the book. Very well written and taboo subjects are very difficult to get a following on; however this book will definitely have a following for its pure rarity.

Guilty Pleasure 4 out of 5 stars.

Wow. I was reading excerpts of innocent gay novels when I stumbled upon this work. It intrigued me, but I steered clear of it at first when I saw a review saying it had sex between a father and son :-O. However, one night I couldn't resist and I read the first thirty or so pages of it. I was instantly hooked, though the book had serious editing faults. Once I ordered it, I read it in one day. The book is currently buried beneath my bed because I am ashamed of having enjoyed it so much, but I just can't get rid of it. It was maybe a little slutty, which I do not admire, but erotica with one lover throughout would have been boring. What really surprised me was the depth of this story. I thought it would be nothing but SEX (which there IS a lot of), but it was an actual story!
Kudos, Holloway.

Editorial Review:

An erotic coming of age story with a taboo twist.

At long last - a new title by Catherine Friend - a winner! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

For those readers who have read Catherine Friend's other lesbian fiction books, The Spanish Pearl and its sequel The Crown of Valencia, both published by Bold Stroke Books, it's been a long wait for this latest release by Ms. Friend. The wait was worth it.

This book has 2 stories that unfold with 300 years between them. This is a story with maps, treasure, mysterious islands, villains and the wide expanse of the sea, in both the past and the present.

In 1715 Captain Thomasina (Tommy) Farris is the pirate captain of the ship Moon Shadow. She leads a total of 300 men in 3 ships as they stalk the Caribbean for riches that can be had from the other ships that sail the waters. In the course of taking a ship Tommy encounters Avery Shaw, her nemisis, whose ships get there first. Throwing slaves overboard he takes the ship and leaves the slaves to drown. Tommy rescues the slaves and in so doing encounters Rebekah Brown, a strong-willed woman who confuses and flusters Tommy.

In the present day, librarian Emma Boyd searches for the treasure map that belonged to Capt. Tommy Farris. Someone is stealing maps from rare books and Emma is helped by Randi Marx, a private investigator hired by her library, to track down the map. Finding the treasure map will foil the thief's plan and will hopefully keep more maps from being stolen.

Catherine Friend successfully weaves the 2 stories together and yet keep the voices in the 2 stories distinct and separate. There are twists and turns throughout both stories. How she is able to keep them so clearly distinct and yet integrated is a skill that not many authors possess. In addition she drops in some names of other pirates, one of whom is found in another BSB book, which I found quite clever indeed. I wanted to search the internet for these other woman pirates even though this is fiction.

Throughout the book I was cheering both pairs of women, Tommy and Rebekah in 1715, and Emma and Randi in present day. Emma has to search her heart for the truth she feels. Tommy must do the same. Pirates in 1715 have much in common with pirates in current times. The reader discovers just how much that's true.

This is a romance, an adventure, and a romp. It's tightly written and the author successfully leads the reader on a scavenger hunt. A word of caution; make sure that you set aside some time when you read this book. You won't want to put it down. Bravo Catherine Friend!

Editorial Review:

When rare book librarian Emma Boyd searches for a pirate's long-lost treasure map, she learns the hard way that pirates still exist in today's world--and some modern pirates steal maps, others steal hearts.

The treasure map she seeks belonged to the Caribbean pirate Thomasina Farris, who disappeared in 1715 without a trace. Did Captain Tommy steal an entire treasure from a Spanish galleon and escape? Did she die by another pirate's sword? Or did she die of a broken heart when the woman she loved disappeared? Emma's and Tommy's stories collide when Emma, after uncovering the truth about Captain Tommy's fate, must decide her own...and the choice is between romance or revenge.

Excellent 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A deeply felt and personal short novel about an American ex-patriot who falls in love with another man in Paris. Baldwin establishes an undeniable tension between David's desire for Giovanni and his desire to live a normal life with his fiancee. There are many quiet and subtle moments in 'Giovanni's Room' that are as good as the best sections in early Hemingway. In a way this novel is more personal and reflective than Baldwin's much esteemed 'Go Tell it On the Mountain,' though it clearly does not have the same political involvement with race relations as the latter does. As always, Baldwin's dialogue is largely impeccable, weaving seamlessly from colloquial interactions, to French, to formal and reserved English. Truly a fine literary achievement.

Editorial Review:

Set in the 1950s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin's now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

This series get better with each volume as the emotional battle comes to a dramatic conclusion. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I really have a wonderful time finishing this series in one go. This story just gets better with each volume as the emotional struggles among the 4 actors deepen. The TV action hero series, in which the 4 guys starred in, serving as a background is refreshing and it plays like a sub plot. Sensei really has a fun time drawing the costumes :).

We know the outcome of this quadrangle love story. However it is the emotional battle to get there which holds my attention from Vol 2 onwards as I naturally root for both "hero" and "villain" to be together.
Who is my favorite character. It is ofcourse Sawada. He is such a cool, cool seme, his silence and near cynical outlook of life, making him such an interesting character. As the story progresses we almost fully understand Sawada's feelings and he remains a mystique till the end. Minami brought to the brink of despair by Sawada's rejection is one vulnerable character with a naivety and "goodness" which I find sometimes frustrating but then he is forgiven because he is afterall the uke hero. Katagiri may have most readers' sympathy by the end of Vol 3 but then I never rooted for him. I quite like Takagi, the more mature uke who learn the hard way there is no second chance in love, and find myself rooting for his and Sawada's reconciliation but that will not be the Yaoi ending we want. LOL.

I enjoy Hero Heel a lot. The 4 guys may have similar features (something sensei could improve on?) but they are 4 distinct characters and their emotional struggles to hold on to the one they love makes Hero Heel one captivating Yaoi. And the sex in Vol 3 is both sensual and sexy, and a bonus point to sensei for the condom :).

Editorial Review:

Minami chooses Katagiri over Sawada not to forget, but to move forward. However, after suddenly receiving a kiss from Sawada, who he was supposed to have forgotten, Minami's heart is severely shaken! Feelings grow complicated as filming and Minami's relationships reach a climax!

A Deeply Moving Novel 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This novel/memoir chronicles the world of a working class lesbian, gay, and transgendered people from the days before Stonewall to the present. It is a classic and probably the most important book available about transgender issues. I cried reading it on the train.

Feinberg is a committed communist, and some of the scenes involving worker solidarity are a contrived, but the book is well written and deeply moving. The scenes of gay bashing are, I should warn you, horrific, but this is a book very much worth reading.

Editorial Review:

Published in 1993, this brave, original novel is considered to be the finest account ever written of the complexities of a transgendered existence.

Woman or man? That's the question that rages like a storm around Jess Goldberg, clouding her life and her identity. Growing up differently gendered in a blue--collar town in the 1950's, coming out as a butch in the bars and factories of the prefeminist '60s, deciding to pass as a man in order to survive when she is left without work or a community in the early '70s. This powerful, provocative and deeply moving novel sees Jess coming full circle, she learns to accept the complexities of being a transgendered person in a world demanding simple explanations: a he-she emerging whole, weathering the turbulence.

Leslie Feinberg is also the author of Trans Liberation, Trans Gender Warriors and Transgender Liberation, and is a noted activist and speaker on transgender issues.

She's even more shocked to find out that the mysterious kissing bandit is a woman.

At first, she needs Raven to complete her analysis, but she doesn't expect to need the friendship that Raven offers. When those friendly feelings escalate to something more, Joslyn's confusion and underdeveloped emotional range might ruin her chance at a relationship that could surpass even her dreams.

Gentle poke at our preconceptions 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've carried my copy of this book over many moves. It grows on me each time I read it. Originally it seemed just a humourous retelling of the Carter discovery of Tutankhamun and the Egyptian hysteria that accompanies it. Later on, after getting much more involved in arguments over interpretations of Roman historical artifacts, I realized how to the point the book is about the way we see the past and argue over the meaning of what we see. Still really funny though.

Editorial Review:

It is the year 4022; all of the ancient country of Usa has been buried under many feet of detritus from a catastrophe that occurred back in 1985. Imagine, then, the excitement that Howard Carson, an amateur archeologist at best, experienced when in crossing the perimeter of an abandoned excavation site he felt the ground give way beneath him and found himself at the bottom of a shaft, which, judging from the DO NOT DISTURB sign hanging from an archaic doorknob, was clearly the entrance to a still-sealed burial chamber. Carson's incredible discoveries, including the remains of two bodies, one of then on a ceremonial bed facing an altar that appeared to be a means of communicating with the Gods and the other lying in a porcelain sarcophagus in the Inner Chamber, permitted him to piece together the whole fabric of that extraordinary civilization.
