This is a landmark work for the ages...and to you who object... 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is one of the most articulate explanations for post-1960s socio-economic trends and the damage the cultural movement left in its wake. TO THOSE NEGATIVE REVIEWERS: I wonder if any of you even read the book. The depth at which Magnet covers the connection between the ideological shift of the "haves" and failed social policies is extensive. This book is not a party-based flag waver. It is an unbias, multi-dimensional study that should give any open-minded person something to ponder. It's time to realize that the "haves" in this country aren't just big conservative blood-thirsty corporations, but that the privileged in this country often reside in the secular entertainment industry and the halls of congress itself. If you don't read this book, just know this: we live in the most privileged society ever to exist in history, even with our shortcomings, and people can only find true compassion, and create true change, if they choose to see the real problems and destructive social codes facing our communities.

Editorial Review:

Myron Magnet's The Dream and the Nightmare argues that the radical transformation of American culture that took place in the 1960s brought today's underclass-overwhelmingly urban, dismayingly minority-into existence. Lifestyle experimentation among the white middle class produced often catastrophic changes in attitudes toward marriage and parenting, the work ethic and dependency in those at the bottom of the social ladder, and closed down their exits to the middle class.

Best book in print on the health policy process 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have used this book for a number of years now in a class I teach on the Politics of Health Policy (along with Kingdon's classic). It provides an excellent overview of how health policy is made and the politics around it, drawing on both the academic literature as well as recent policies. The second edition is heavily revised from the first and contains up to date examples. An excellent academic overview of the health policy process.

Editorial Review:

In the first edition of the acclaimed Governing Health, Carol S. Weissert and William G. Weissert examined health care policy making from a long-term political perspective, describing how Congress, the president, special interest groups, bureaucracy, and state governments helped define health policy problems and find politically feasible solutions. Now, in this second edition, the authors have expanded their coverage and analysis to demonstrate their themes in four key time periods: 1965, when Medicaid and Medicare were passed; 1981, when OBRA came into being; 1994, when health care reform was at the forefront of President Clinton's agenda; and 2000, when health care reform formed a part of the presidential campaign platforms.

Editorial Review:

Research on social entrepreneurship is finally catching up to its rapidly growing potential. In The Search for Social Entrepreneurship, Paul Light explores this surge of interest to establish the state of knowledge on this growing phenomenon and suggest directions for future research. Light begins by outlining the debate on how to define social entrepreneurship, a concept often cited and lauded but not necessarily understood. A very elemental definition would note that it involves individuals, groups, networks, or organizations seeking sustainable change via new ideas on how governments, nonprofits, and businesses can address significant social problems. That leaves plenty of gaps, however, and without adequate agreement on what the term means, we cannot measure it effectively. The unsatisfying results are apple-to-orange comparisons that make replication and further research difficult. The subsequent section examines the four main components of social entrepreneurship: ideas, opportunities, organizations, and the entrepreneurs themselves. The copious information available about each has yet to be mined for lessons on making social entrepreneurship a success. The third section draws on Light s original survey research on 131 high-performing nonprofits, exploring how they differ across the four key components. The fourth and final section offers recommendations for future action and research in this burgeoning field.

This manual takes you through waht you need to know about organizing. From strategy development to research to implementation, this book shows you how to do it. Well written and simple to understand. Outstanding reference for novice to experienced organizer.

The best purchase you can make and you won't need to buy others.

Not as good as their old mimeographs 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is disappointing. While it may help a college student or other really new person grasp some of the concepts of organizing it is not useful to practioners.

The Midwest Academy used to have a very good training manual covering many issues. As the book got slicker looking the information got worse.

Get Shel Trapp's old Basics of Organizing instead - much more useful, and free on the internet.

Editorial Review:

Compiled by members of the Midwest Academy this book is a bible for anyone who wants to effectively organize to change the quality of their lives or the lives of others. Now in its third edition this book has already sold 60,000 copies in all of its editions since 1991. With new information on the trends, technology, and concerns of the new millennium, this edition of Organizing for Social Change will help concerned citizens bring about needed changes by learning from the experiences of those who have succeeded.

Tranny of good intentions 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Tranny of good intentions was a ground-breaking Danish movie that blurred the borders between pornography and Kierkegaard's moral philosophy... It is surprising to see the title changed by a "y" but, nonetheless, very encouraging to read "good intentions" as a motivation description of the "sheeple", the "evil government" and the other enemies of the "trufers"... Mr Roberts' creation shines with unintentional ironies and unforeseen vignettes of simplistic brilliance...

Editorial Review:

In this updated and expanded edition of The Tyranny of Good Intentions, Paul Craig Roberts and Lawrence M. Stratton renew their valiant campaign to reclaim that which is rightly ours–liberty protected by the rule of law. They show how crusading legislators and unfair prosecutors are remaking American law into a weapon wielded by the government and how the erosion of the legal principles we hold dear–such as habeas corpus and the prohibition against self-incrimination–is destroying the presumption of innocence. A new introduction and new chapters cover recent marquee cases and make this provocative book essential reading for anyone who cringes at the thought of unbridled state power and sees our civil liberties slowly slipping away in the name of the War on Drugs, the War on Crime, and the War on Terror.

Editorial Review:

If you believe children should be seduced into warped sexual behavior by the Gay Elite, if you think confessed murderers should be set free by defense attorneys who know how to wield the race card, if you feel promiscuous gay men should be empowered to spread AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, don’t read this book.

But if you’ve always suspected that factions on the Left are trying to destroy the values that define our civilization, this book proves it. Through the pages of The Death of Right and Wrong, author, activist, and pundit Tammy Bruce takes you inside the chilling world of the Left—a place where morals and decency have been turned on their heads and the crisp distinction between Right and Wrong has been blurred into a mushy, gray mess.

In this world, the Gay Elite exploit our children—under the guise of tolerance and education—to satisfy their sexual obsessions.

In this world, the Black Elite laud convicted murderers as community heroes and award-winning “artists.”

In this world, the Feminist Elite fawn over a woman who mercilessly killed all five of her children.

And much more that will offend your sense of decency and threaten your basic values.

Ms. Bruce smashes the facades of “Tolerance,” “Understanding,” and other Leftist slogans to reveal the ugly truth of their agenda. As a gay activist and former president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization of Women, she witnessed firsthand the Left’s attempts to undermine our millennia-old code of morals and values, aided by politically biased media and academia. And if the news headlines of today are any indication, they’re winning the culture war. Unless we act now, we are doomed at the hands of special interest groups on the Left who want nothing more than to undermine our ability to judge right from wrong in order to foist their own selfish, anything-goes society on the rest of us. This book reveals what they’re doing, how they’re doing it, and what we can do to restore decency in our society.

You’ll discover powerful tools in these pages to help you understand the psychology of the Left—what makes them tick and, more importantly, how to stop them from eroding our values completely. Full of controversial opinions and countless examples ripped from the headlines, The Death of Right and Wrong is a powerful, eye-opening book that you won’t want to be without.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestseller about the harm that liberal do-gooders have wrought on those they’ve tried for decades to help

Liberals from Capitol Hill to Hollywood, from our major news organizations to our leading universities, are convinced that they know what’s best for America’s poor and middle class. And they are equally convinced that anyone who disagrees with them isn’t just wrong, but morally inferior, cold hearted . . . maybe even evil.

But consider the mess liberals have made of education, race relations, crime, welfare, homelessness, and just about every other domestic issue over the past four decades. It’s a wonder they’re still so smug and self-righteous.

Bestselling author and columnist Mona Charen now offers a comprehensive look at the damage caused by decades of well-intentioned liberal “big-heartedness.” She shines the spotlight of truth on the nation’s best-known—and most dangerous—do-gooders, including Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon, Jesse Jackson, Al Franken, Maureen Dowd, Bill Moyers, Dan Rather, Katie Couric, Gloria Steinem, and Hillary Clinton.

Mona Charen holds the do-gooders accountable for their bad ideas, and refuses to let them hide from the real world facts that disprove their naïve theories.

“Charen’s new book . . . comes at the perfect time. . . . Her book is not only an easy read, but her wit and humor make it truly enjoyable.”
—Betsy Hart, Chicago Sun-Times

“The indispensable Mona Charen devotes her new book . . . to depicting the severe price that America has paid for past acts of ill-considered liberal beneficence. The array of facts Charen assembles, from crime to welfare to education, is daunting and definitive. . . . To read this excellent book is to receive a keen insight into why America has moved so far in the conservative direction in recent years.”
—National Review

“Following up on her bestselling Useful Idiots, Charen seeks to debunk liberal discourse and unearth the facts that never make the New York Times.”
—Christopher Benson, The Weekly Standard

“Anyone who does not understand the utter cynicism of politics does not understand politics. An education on that subject can be found in Mona Charen’s incisive new book, Do- Gooders.”
—Thomas Sowell, Capitalism Magazine

Do-Gooders abounds in powerful data.”

Altho a difficult read this is a great teaching text 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This text provides informative and up to date information regarding a broad range of drug related topic. Althought the reading level is not easy, the information is extremely useful for drug counselors. The information presented regarding psychopharmacology provides an excellent base of preparation for the certification test used in many states. I highly recommend this text as well as many of the web site exercises.

Editorial Review:

A leading college textbook on the subject, the fifth edition of Drugs and Society is an exceptional introductory source of information on drug-related problems in our society. The text integrates the sociological, biomedical and social-psychological perspectives of drug abuse problems in language accessible to students at all levels. It discusses the origins of drug-abuse related issues, the unique features of psychoactive substances, their potential short- and long-term consequences, and current treatment strategies.

Editorial Review:

Reflecting an emerging consensus that social justice is a primary mission of the social work profession, this innovative text provides a thorough grounding in policy analysis with extensive coverage of policy practice and a unique emphasis on the broad issues and human dilemmas inherent in the pursuit of social justice. Organized in four parts, the book introduces several philosophical perspectives on what constitutes social justice, and identifies the values and assumptions reflected in contemporary policy debates. Part I provides a framework for policy analysis and policy practice, as well as foundation content related to the structure and role of government in the United States. Part II offers a theoretical framework for determining when a personal disadvantage is considered a social problem. It then focuses on social problems that constitute widely shared risks, including poverty, physical illness, mental illness, and disability. Part III introduces theories of discrimination and oppression and explores the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, including people of color, gays and lesbians, children, women, working Americans, and the elderly. Part IV offers a "Glance to The Future," examining emerging policy issues such as inequality, incarceration as a means of social control, globalization, and international governance.

Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy (Research Navigator Edition, with Themes of the Times for Social Welfare Policy) (6th Edition)

This is the textbook our brilliant professor selected for our social welfare policy class. However, one has to be a dedicated reader of social welfare policy to continue reading it because this textbook is densely written, or it may just be the subject matter. One chapter was exceedingly long; it was 119 pages! Nevertheless, it was up-to-date, as it included the policies of the current presidential administration. Contemporaneous history I've lived through was factual and accurate. It has detailed bibliography and reference sections.

Editorial Review:

B> This is the leading book in social welfare policy in departments of social work, political science, administration and government. Originally written with Thomas Dye, subsequent editions by Diana DiNitto have been acknowledged as the most comprehensive orientation to social welfare available. DiNitto's approach is politically neutral; she describes the major welfare programs, including welfare, social security, disability, health insurance, and more. This new edition includes new and updated information on welfare (TANF), food stamps, managed care, disability, aging, the change from a budget deficit to a budget surplus, the latest figures on poverty, and the latest information on job training and employment. For anyone interested in public policy or social welfare.
