Outstanding. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book along with the nine preceding this one, should be required reading for anyone interested in the day to day living of early days in the south.

Cozy Christmas reading! 5 out of 5 stars.

Every Christmas, I read a book in the month of December about Christmas. This was my choice for 2006, and it really is a wonderful little book. The authors provide us with accounts from Appalachia's older folks who recall the Christmasses of their childhoods. It is almost like listening to them speak as we are told of a more innocent time in America, and the simplicity of their Christmas, which focused on the Lord. We learn about their gifts, which aren't much compared to today, their meals which sound delicious, games they played, church, and social gatherings. Recipes are included, as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to incorporate more peace and simplicity into their Christmas season. Merry Christmas!

Editorial Review:

Based on interviews with families in the mountains of northeast Georgia, a book of recollections commemorates the holiday traditions of Appalachian families and offers instructions for recreating many of their ornaments, toys, and dishes. Reprint. UP.

A Unique, Charming and Informative Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I just finished reading this wonderful new book and found it to be both a fascinating history lesson (it provides lots of background information about holidays and traditions from around the world) and an accurate view of family life in modern America. The suggestions it provides are practical and realistic for families who are trying to combine many different cultural backgrounds or step-parents and -siblings.

Most of the other traditions books out there are more of a how-to handbook (with recipe-like instructions) to be consulted on occasion, not a book you can sit down and read cover to cover like this one. The Joy of Family Traditions is a beautiful book with a warm, cozy feel. I also appreciated the sections of this book that talked about family traditions that involve charitable giving, and volunteering. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

When a special activity evolves into a tradition within a family, it creates meaning, connection, and community and makes common occasions more momentous and memorable. Establishing a sense of stability and shared history has never been more important to parents than it is today, as families become more fractured and scattered. THE JOY OF FAMILY TRADITIONS offers more than 400 fresh ideas and creative approaches to cultivating birthday, anniversary, holiday, and other rite-of-passage and seasonal traditions that strengthen personal bonds and reflect a family's individual style, spirituality, and values.

Tis the Season 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Touching, inspiring stories, including "The Right Touch" which is from another heartwarming holiday bestseller, A Christmas Dozen: Christmas Stories to Warm the Heart. What a pre-Christmas feast. Best served starting with the Thanksgiving weekend. Why wait for Christmas morning to enjoy these feel-good stories that will put you in the mood for Christmas?

Disappointing. 2 out of 5 stars.

Okay, I'm a sucker for a good sob story that pulls at the heartstrings. Unfortunately, this didn't do it. I own many of the Chicken Soup books and this one in particular had the potential for hitting the zenith of Chicken-Soup-ish-ness. But the stories seemed fake, not particularly heartwarming, and contrived.

Editorial Review:

Chicken Soup for the Soul Book of Christmas Virtues is a timeless collection of stories that highlights kindness, joy, faith, simplicity, wonder and love that comes with the inspiring season.

The book is filled with story treats for every member of the family and reminds us once and for all times that Christmas is a season full of hope, of dreams and more than a celebration.

Enjoy the Macy's Parade all year long with this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Being a Macy's Parade fan forever it is always sad when it is over for another year. Now with this book you can enjoy the Macy's Parade throughout the entire year. The book is chock full of glorious vintage ads and totally awesome pictures. The NY Daily News images are stunning and all of the images seem to leap off the pages. The writing is done in a conversational manner that draws you in and the parade is presented decade by decade and year to year with many interesting facts along the way! Then after the feast of glorious pages of text and black and white images the book ends in a splash of color and what color it is, eye candy indeed!

Editorial Review:

“Let’s have a parade” is the phrase that begins a beloved American tradition, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1924, employees of the R. H. Macy and Company store in Herald Square, many of whom were immigrants and first-generation Americans, chose to give thanks for their good fortune in a manner reminiscent of the festive parades held in their native countries. The excitement and praise from crowds lining the route that first year led Macy’s to issue an immediate proclamation: the parade would become a tradition. Before the parade’s first decade passed, Macy’s welcomed the huge and spectacular helium character balloons that became its goodwill ambassadors. Since then, the parade has become a world-famous treasure. Through rare and historic images, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade offers readers a chance to reminisce, explore, and delight in eighty years of this thoroughly American celebration.

Beautiful edition of a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A Child's Garden of Verses has always been one of my favorite books, and over the years I've given dozens of copies of it as First Birthday presents to the new children in my life. This is the most beautiful edition I have ever seen of these beloved poems. The illustrations are wonderful! They're taken from numerous editions over the years, and they cover a variety of styles and time periods. I couldn't be happier with this book, and I can't wait for the opportunity to give it to more children who I hope will grow to love it as much as I do.

The world is so full of a number of things
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.

Who says you can't go back.... 5 out of 5 stars.

Just love the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. Loved them
as a child and still do. And the illustrations are
wonderful - reminds me of when I was a little girl, and
we sometimes need that.

A wonderful romp 5 out of 5 stars.

I grew up in the 70's ... I had this book it was my mother's in the 50',s and her mother's in the 20's .... it hastens back to a wonderful time of imagination and literacy in children as well as their parents ... really lovely book .. A wonderful swing ride into a time past, and the land of nod

Editorial Review:

For millions of people the annual visit to a department store to view the festive window displays and visit Saint Nicholas in his  winter wonderland is a treasured holiday tradition. But how did holiday traditions like this begin? Author William L. Bird, Jr. traces their evolution as holiday decorations moved from shop windows to building exteriors and out into the street in the form of parade floats. Packed with rarely seen photographs, Holidays on Display makes it easy to see why we have such lasting emotional attachments to animated Christmas windows, passing parades, and the ambient glow of holiday lights.
