I expected more... 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Maybe it is because the Chemerinsky is hyped so much in legal circles regarding Constitutional Law, but I was expecting a lot more out of this book than it seemingly offers...the cases are HEAVILY edited, so much so that either my professor will supplement the reading or I will just end up turning to Westlaw or Lexis to read (or at least skim) vast portions of the opinion that have been edited out...

A Compelling Interest 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Chemrinsky is surely one of the leaders in the education of constitutional law, and his casebook is well tailored for the beginning law school student. Instead of trying to impress other lawyers, or simply reprinting case text as-is with no synthesis (a criminally unpunished activity by many casebook creators), Chemrinsky states early on that this book is structured for the student. There is certainly plenty of supplemental information here, with Chemerinsky doing a fine job of synthesizing and categorizing the myriad dimensions of constitutional law, and usefully facilitating the student's learning experience through more than just reprinted cases. The only real problem with this book is its sheer size, which cannot be blamed only on the nature of the subject matter. In my three-credit, one-semester course we only got through about a quarter of the book. When creating a casebook that truly presents constitutional law for the student, which is Chemerinsky's goal, the editor should figure out a way to emphasize the bare fundamentals that should be mastered by the average student who has a limited amount of time available for doing so. Editorial Review:

The Inventive Peasant Arnaud du Tilh had almost persuaded the learned judges at the Parlement of Toulouse, when on a summer's day in 1560 a man swaggered into the court on a wooden leg, denounced Arnaud, and reestablished his claim to the identity, property, and wife of Martin Guerre. The astonishing case captured the imagination of the Continent. Told and retold over the centuries, the story of Martin Guerre became a legend, still remembered in the Pyrenean village where the impostor was executed more than 400 years ago.

Now a noted historian, who served as consultant for a new French film on Martin Guerre, has searched archives and lawbooks to add new dimensions to a tale already abundant in mysteries: we are led to ponder how a common man could become an impostor in the sixteenth century, why Bertrande de Rols, an honorable peasant woman, would accept such a man as her husband, and why lawyers, poets, and men of letters like Montaigne became so fascinated with the episode.

Natalie Zemon Davis reconstructs the lives of ordinary people, in a sparkling way that reveals the hidden attachments and sensibilities of nonliterate sixteenth-century villagers. Here we see men and women trying to fashion their identities within a world of traditional ideas about property and family and of changing ideas about religion. We learn what happens when common people get involved in the workings of the criminal courts in the ancien régime, and how judges struggle to decide who a man was in the days before fingerprints and photographs. We sense the secret affinity between the eloquent men of law and the honey-tongued village impostor, a rare identification across class lines.

Deftly written to please both the general public and specialists, The Return of Martin Guerre will interest those who want to know more about ordinary families and especially women of the past, and about the creation of literary legends. It is also a remarkable psychological narrative about where self-fashioning stops and lying begins.

this book really clarifies a lot of the major concepts. i recommend it to any con law student.

Direct and fairly concise 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very helpful study aid for Constitutional law, and believe it or not, it does qualify as concise. The topic is obviously expansive, and the book does a decent job of hitting the critical points without waxing too discursive.

Perfect Condition & Tells you what you need to know 4 out of 5 stars.

This book cuts out all of the "bull" from your textbook and just tells you what you need to know about the cases and will probably even tell you what your teacher is going to lecture about in class.

the bible for con-law 5 out of 5 stars.

If anyone is taking Constitutional Law and is using the Chemerinsky case book, this treatise is a MUST have. You can actually get along the semester perfectly without the big case book and just reading this treatise. It explains things way better than the big book. Unless you need to know the cases straight from the language in the case book, this is just enough to do very well in this class.

Editorial Review:

Written by leading scholars, each title in the "Introduction to Law" series contains comprehensive treatment in black-letter style. Featuring footnotes citing to case law, statutory and other authorities, these volumes are ideal for in-depth research on particular issues and points of law.

Great information about business law 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I doubted the content of the book at first thinking it'll just tell of normal business laws. But after the first chapter, I found this book actually being helpful in providing examples of cases that actually happened and how the business laws were applied. Even for normal reading, the book is surely interesting.

Editorial Review:

"Concepts in context." It's an approach unique among business law textbooks and one of the main reasons Beatty and Samuelson's BUSINESS LAW AND THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT is so successful in the classroom. From the very first chapter, the authors' superb writing fascinates, drawing students into the concepts of business law within the context of vivid examples and memorable scenarios. Throughout, provocative questions encourage students to reflect about what they are reading-teaching by example using activities that foster active learning and show students how to think through issues from a lawyer's perspective. No other text is as effective at helping students learn how to apply concepts and contexts to their practice, and in teaching them why business law matters not only to their careers but also to their daily lives.

Editorial Review:

In America, when somebody does you wrong, you take 'em to court. W. R. Grace and Beatrice Foods had been dumping a cancer-causing industrial solvent into the water table of Woburn, Massachusetts, for years; in 1981, the families of eight leukemia victims sued. However, A Civil Action demonstrates powerfully that--even with the families' hotshot lawyers and the evidence on their side--justice is elusive, particularly when it involves malfeasance by megacorporations. Much of the legal infighting can cause the eyes to glaze. But the story is saved by great characters: the flawed, flamboyant Jan Schlichtmann and his group of bulldogs for the prosecution; Jerome Facher, the enigmatic lawyer for Beatrice, who proves to be more than a match; John J. Riley, the duplicitous, porcine tannery owner; and a host of others. It's impossible not to feel the drama of this methodical book, impossible not to grieve for the parents who lost children, and impossible not to share Schlichtmann's desperation as he runs out of money. A Civil Action reads like one long advertisement for a few well-placed Molotov cocktails. (But that wouldn't make for a very long book, now would it?)

Flopping like New Coke 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

While I agree in principle that a citation book should be readable and easy to use, I find ALWD to be decidedly useless in the real practice of law. Although forced to purchase the book as a 1L, I have to meet an attorney, judge or legal scholar that uses it or would like it to replace the Bluebook. In fact, during a firm interview, the attorney and I joked that we would like to start an anti-ALWD club to prevent 1Ls from being tricked into preferring ALWD over Bluebook. Sorry ALWD.

Paralegal now has a clue 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a paralegal, I assist my supervising attorneys in writing briefs for administrative hearings and federal court. We had a brief due in which we were citing federal law, California Education Code, and a plethora of State-generated publications and web content that were created in response to State and Federal mandates. I had no idea how to format the legal cites for some of our more unusual sources of data. I ordered the ALWD Citation Manual and had it in my hands within days. It was a little confusing to look up which types of cites applied to my materials, though. Some things were pretty easy to figure out, but other things were more cryptic. In the end, we figured it out and it helped us get our brief out on time and properly formatted.
