Editorial Review:

Gain a solid understanding of the concepts underlying today’s federation taxation for individuals and corporations with the 2009 edition of Murphy/Higgins’s CONCEPTS IN FEDERAL TAXATION. This edition presents the latest tax codes and changes within a straightforward, strong conceptual approach that focuses on understanding the unifying concepts behind the tax code, rather than relying heavily on memorizing the details of the code. Concept Checks break material in comprehensible segments with an emphasis on the conceptual underpinnings that drive today’s tax laws, while extensive Examples relate concepts to familiar business scenarios. More end-of-chapter exercises than any other text of its kind give you a choice of research opportunities and tax return options as you review. Murphy/Higgins’s CONCEPTS IN FEDERAL TAXATION promises a strong balance between tax concepts and the Internal Revenue Code and regulations that prepares you for success on the CPA exam as well as your career.

Informative, enlightening, and well-organized. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Like many Americans, I didn't know much about our country's principles of government or its legal system. This book helped me to become more knowledgeable about both. I admit, this is not reading I would choose to curl up with in front of the fire; this was part of a requirement for my MBA. However, I will remember what I've learned in this text long after my class ends. Having previously been clueless about the legal system, it is now exhilarating to read about, say, how the nine US Supreme Court Justices are dealing with the aftermath of the Gore vs. Bush debacle and actually understand what is going on. The chapters are well-organized and easy to understand. There are even helpful study tips and ways to brief a legal case in the beginning of the text. After completing this book, I not only feel better equipped to handle business decisions, but also feel empowered and enlightened for better understanding our great country.

Editorial Review:

In 1963, the first edition of Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business, authored by Bob Corley, started a new course emphasizing the legal environment in which business is conducted. By focusing on the public nature of how government regulates business activities, rather than simply how businesses privately make transactions, a movement away from traditional Business Law began. Through it’s previous 13 editions, Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business has been the leader in setting the standard for materials covered in an introduction to the legal and regulatory environment of business.

Pure Torture 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The problem with this book is that she is constantly telling you to write special little paragraphs with little or no explanation or reason for their existence. Instead of telling you how to write a paper, she tells you all kinds of "specialty paragraphs" that you must include in your paper.

For example, here's what she says should be in the "analysis section" of a trial brief (remember this is just part of a brief):
1) An Umbrella section containing
a rule summary and
controlling authority and
rule definition and
principles affecting the rule application and
argument summary and
resolution of potential "resistance"
2) A Standard paradigm (don't ask what it is or why she calls it that)
3) A rule statement with two sub-parts
4) A rule explanation with four sub-parts
5) A "factual conclusion" with a conclusion two sections before your actual conclusion
6) A rule application with three sub-parts
7) A conclusion with two sub-parts

great con law supplement! 5 out of 5 stars.

this book really clarifies a lot of the major concepts. i recommend it to any con law student.

Direct and fairly concise 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very helpful study aid for Constitutional law, and believe it or not, it does qualify as concise. The topic is obviously expansive, and the book does a decent job of hitting the critical points without waxing too discursive.

Perfect Condition & Tells you what you need to know 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book cuts out all of the "bull" from your textbook and just tells you what you need to know about the cases and will probably even tell you what your teacher is going to lecture about in class.

the bible for con-law 5 out of 5 stars.

If anyone is taking Constitutional Law and is using the Chemerinsky case book, this treatise is a MUST have. You can actually get along the semester perfectly without the big case book and just reading this treatise. It explains things way better than the big book. Unless you need to know the cases straight from the language in the case book, this is just enough to do very well in this class.

Editorial Review:

Written by leading scholars, each title in the "Introduction to Law" series contains comprehensive treatment in black-letter style. Featuring footnotes citing to case law, statutory and other authorities, these volumes are ideal for in-depth research on particular issues and points of law.

Disappointment: I'm dumping this for another title 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The text itself is barely adequate for an undergraduate level class (I wouldn't consider it for graduate study). At first I was excited by the addition of the "case method" technique for presenting criminal theory, but after struggling with the poorly edited cases I find myself actually skipping them.

The explanations and examples used in this book do meet minimal standards, but don't expect much more than that. It's almost as if the author were too busy with other projects to actually put together a quality product.

To make matters worse the support material provided to professors is horrible. I'm not normally a big "test bank" type of instructor, but one of the selling points to this book was the extensive library of material available. Sadly, this is once again proof that quantity does not always equal quality.

The test bank is full of very poorly worded questions. What's worse is that many of the questions have answers which contradict the book. In other words, the test key and the book do not agree....END

Ok, but No Freer 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

E&E is a great series. I've found many of the books helpful in supplementing law school reading that can be at times difficult to synthesize. However, Freer's supplement on civil procedure is unbeatable.

Law school is about knowing the rule and applying the facts. E&E is great at helping you to know the rule. However, it doesn't help you figure out how to apply the facts, especially in a way pertinent to law school exams. Freer's book is full of examples and frameworks that assure success on your CivPro exam. This is especially true of the frameworks he lays out for analyzing Personal Jurisdiction problems and Erie.

Buy Freer and you'll be happier going into your final.

Editorial Review:

Students know they can count on expert study guide author Joseph W. Glannon to clarify even the most complicated topics. Unquestionable effectiveness earned his civil procedure guides their bestselling status. Extensively revised and updated for its Fifth Edition, "Civil Procedure: Examples & Explanations" continues to introduce the principles of civil procedure and illustrate how they apply in typical cases.

Too bad if your professor requries this one 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is just awful -

It is edited terribly, and very confusing, It's just really seems a listing of all the cases ever decided - awfully structured - a terrible way to learn ethics - it takes a subject that could be interesting and makes it terribly, boring. The book is fundamentally hard to read, hard to remember. It is totally not useful as a teaching tool. In the hands of an inexperienced professor its a nightmare!

Gillers, don't suffer anyone else your bad text books again. You've taken an interesting subject, made it bland, confusing, and almost incomprehensible. Please, professors considering this book - look somewhere else - don't encourage him to write again!

Look out this thing is terrible!

A very comprehensive, easy to understand ethics text 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think the other reviewer, who gave this text one star, must not have invested sufficient time in understanding the material. The Gillers text is very comprehensive in its treatment, which is a STRENGTH. It is the nature of ethics that even well-chosen ethics cases will usually involve more than one issue, and the author has chosen to reinforce certain concepts over and over instead of shielding the student from this, which sometimes involves looks ahead to certain topics. In addition, the ethics

If the other reviewer wanted a treatment that just touched the high points of the rules, enough to pass the MPRE, he read the wrong book. Ethics is a massive, often complicated subject that is rapidly evolving due to our current place in history. Hence many of the cases illustrating key points will be bar association decisions from certain states, or decisions from seemingly minor state courts. The author has done exhaustive research to locate and summarize these cases across all jurisdictions, due to the many differences across jurisdictions.

The book also contains extensive case studies of important topics outside the opinions (for example the "Triangle Shirtwaist" fire, and what happened on cross of a key witness). These sections help to break up the many case opinions, and help keep the material interesting and illustrative.

The problems are, in my opinion, very well constructed. Instead of being five-minute exercises dealing with just one issue, they are designed to be difficult and represent possible real-world situations, as well as to reinforce previous material. This means that if you do a problem on malpractice, for example, you should expect to potentially deal with conflicts of interest and many other issues. A teacher who adequately explores the problems with her students could almost teach the material just from the problems and the rules.

The book is so well-organized that even a perennial C student could read it and understand the material with some effort, and become a relative master of ethics. Perhaps that's not what the other reviewer wanted. If you want to REALLY learn ethics, including issues beyond the scope of the rules proper, I can't imagine a better book. If you cover the material and give it the attention it deserves, you also couldn't possibly fail the MPRE.

This book is very helpful, especially because my professor recommended it. The explanations are clear and useful.

A great help! 5 out of 5 stars.

A really great book, it finally brought some clarity to evidence. But be prepared to spend some time reading this book, as it has fairly in-depth coverage. Even so, I found it a very valuable study tool.

Eeeeeeeeeeehhhh, not so great 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Don't waste your money on this book. You're better off reading the advisory committee notes in the FRE rulebook than this thing. It's cursory and the illustrations are ridiculous. Stick to the Finals books; they're more helpful for Evidence, I think.

Clear Introduction for Anyone Interested in Criminal Law 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For some reason it's very hard to find books on the law specifically directed toward non-lawyers. This is odd since the law is an important instutition which should be simple enough (and usually is) for anyone to understand it. Since there are so few popular books on the law, if you want to learn about the law these "Understanding" books are a good place to start. I don't have any formal education in the law, but I think that these books are sometimes used as study guides ( which is why student reviewers seem to refer to them as 'hornbooks' )for law school, but a formal student of the law would read the cases themselves.

This volume on the criminal law covers the basic principles of criminal law. The way intent is treated in crimes, defenses (insanity, self defense), mistakes (of law and of fact), and reviews some basic crimes in general terms including their development from the Common Law such as murder, conspiracy, attempt, theft etc... Most specific crimes are not covered (e.g. class B Felony and such things are codified by particular states and therefore are not covered in a book on the concepts of criminal law). The book does not cover subjects like when the police can search your car, such things are referred to as Criminal Procedure.

I found this book to be very interesting, and it would be accessible to anyone with an interest in the law.

Editorial Review:

This book deals exclusively with substantive criminal law, with primary attention given to the elements of individual criminal responsibility. It is authoritative, current, highly readable, and widely used at law schools throughout the nation. Coverage focuses on the basic elements of, and defenses to, specific crimes, such as homicide, rape, and theft, as well as group criminality and inchoate liability. The common law is emphasized, with extensive comparisons to the Model Penal Code and thoughtful examination of the underpinnings of the utilitarian philosophies of substantive criminal law. The text encourages students to consider the approach these philosophies would take to a particular matter under discussion, thus providing an excellent learning tool for gaining a firm understanding of how our criminal justice system works.
