Glannon is fantastic. This is a great book to review before exams, and it also is a great value!

Useful & recommended 4 out of 5 stars.

Though I ended up not having much use for this book due to my professor's distinctive teaching methodology, I still found it helpful in clarifying the basic concepts of Torts. The author injects a slightly dorky sense of humor into the narrative, which makes the information more accessible and easier to grasp. He also has a very clear, conversational writing style. Overall recommended (at least if you don't have my Torts professor).

I Think You Can do Better Than This 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 9 people found this review helpful.

    I'm not being law-snobby, I promise.

I bought the book because I was struggling to get my head around remedies, and although it helped, I ended up buying Lexis' "Understanding Contracts," too.

I should disclaim that what follows is based on the remedies section (that's all I used it for). That's a big piece of contracts, but maybe the rest of the book, which I didn't explore, is better.

    Okay, here goes:

I found the E&E book to be imprecise with some concepts and vocabulary. It could be my own quirkiness, but to me that imprecision was maddening. In one paragraph, a plaintiff had "moved," "pled" and also "applied" for summary judgement. Applied??? SJ isn't a credit card! And it's not a pleading for that matter, either.

If you find these types of imprecision trivial, the book might be for you. They left me wondering if there were any important issues being confused, as well. We all know that law exams ask us to identify doctrinal issues, weight them, and (if the opportunity presents itself) apply the particular policy analysis that our respective professors find endearing. The extent to which a secondary source like E&E leads us astray on the doctrine is the same extent to which we will be led astray on our exams.

If you are like me, you should buy "Understanding Contracts" from the corporate mongers at Lexis. I felt like the concepts and vocabulary were applied in a more precise, crisp way. It will save you from trying to infer what the author is trying to say from what the author did say, and it will save you from writing snooty remarks and question marks in the margin -- time you could be spending learning Contracts.

good last-minute review book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

good review for corporations class. it is based on the model code, and sometimes DE. but if you need NY law, this book doesn't help that much. but the explanations are clear and interesting.

Decent 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I generally like the Examples and Explanations series, however "Corporations" is not one of their best. As other reviewers have mentioned, this book focuses primarily on the Model Business Corporations Act and does not include cites to Delaware or other states. Usually, I could find the cites myself, but this added a layer of work when I made my outline. Also, some cases were not explained succintly in one place--rather, the analysis was spread throughout a chapter and continued through the examples. This was distracting--it was more helpful when the key cases of a doctrine were summarized in one place and then briefly referenced later on. If your class focuses on Delaware you should also beware that there have been several key developments since 2006 that will alter some of the chapters. Other than that, it is hard to beat E&E for a good review of the material and "Corporations" does the job.

    Editorial Review:

This practical and straightforward study guide has earned its enduring popularity by demystifying corporate law for students who do not have a business background. "Corporate Law: Examples & Explanations, 5th Edition" presents a full review of the legal issues that arise in modern corporations.

Nobody will like to read this book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Nobody will like to read this book. Expect possibly bankruptcy lawyers. It is a book of dread. You read it because you have to read it, in situations where you suspect that bankruptcy is looming as a possible if not probable outcome.

Much of the value in the book lies in the numerous government forms that you need to fill out, in order to file for Chapter 7. Given that you are likely in straitened financial circumstances (otherwise why are you doing this?), the cost of this book is easily outweighed by its advice. Including very specific steps and forms needed for those steps.

The book's language is clear and easy to follow. The authors have done well in stripping out all unnecessary legalese.

    Editorial Review:

In these times of massive credit card debt and stagnating incomes, filing for bankruptcy has become the only relief for thousands of people. The information in How to File for Bankruptcy is so complete that a person can file virtually on his own, without needing to hire a lawyer. By no means does the book encourage filing for bankruptcy, but it will help anyone in serious financial trouble determine if bankruptcy might be a sensible course to take, and examines what kind is appropriate for different individuals. All of the necessary forms are included, complete with explicit directions. Like all Nolo Press titles, this is a straightforward, no-nonsense book of useful advice and specific guidance, written in clear, easy-to-understand language.

If you are taking an introductory course in Bankruptcy, get a copy of this book - And use it! If your course also includes Chapter 11 Reorganizations, I would also recommend that you get a copy of Chapter Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers. They are useful before exams. But I recommend getting them at the start of the semester.

Excellent Primer on Bankruptcy 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I am an experienced lawyer and regularly read books (usually one-volume treatises) outside my practice area. Comprehensive books on bankruptcy are hard to find, and I purchased Blum's for lack of any alternative. The book is well organized, clearly written, and contains a lot of information. Even the attempts at humor are generally successful.

To offer some unsolicited advice to law students, I don't recommend using this or any supplementary texts in your courses. Stick with the casebook and other materials the instructor assigns. It may seem as if this requires more effort to learn the subject than is warranted, but you won't regret it. You'll never have the time once you start working to reread and think about cases that you have while in school. That 3 years may seem like a long time, but if you take it seriously you will benefit significantly throughout your career. It is surprising how often I encounter exprienced lawyers who are ignorant of matters I learned in law school (now long past) and still remember.

I had the pleasure of taking Professor Seamon's Administrative Law course at the University of South Carolina School of Law. He really knows the material in and out and this book reflects that.

Administrative law is probably one of the more complex areas of law, and this book provides a solid framework for understanding the material. I reviewed some commercial outlines, but this material is much better suited for the E&E format. I've used the E&E Series for all of the first year courses and found this to be one of the better books. I highly recomend getting this book and going through it both before and during class.

Damages review 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

David Ball on Damages is the best book I have ever read on the subject. I have been practicing for 20 years. This book has changed the way I will approach personal injury trials in the future. Other lawyers in my area are just starting to use Mr. Ball's techniques with sucess.

The Best Guide on Damages 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

There is nothing more difficult for a plaintiff's attorney to do than to decide whether or not to ask the jury to return a specific dollar amount in damages or leave the decision up to the jury. The second most difficult question he/she has is determining how to motivate the jury to return as big a verdict as possible.

Ball does not disappoint in answering these questions. In short, he teaches plaintiff attorneys how to maximize the verdicts they get. For example, he devotes a whole chapter on describing jurors' motivations for giving and how you can get them to do so. Even if you are a defense attorney, this book is essential reading so that you can learn what jurors are interested in and what causes them to reach the decisions they do.

    Editorial Review:

When David Ball on Damages was first published in 2001, it changed the way attorneys seek damages. The book provides step-by-step guidance for attorneys seeking money for their clients. Ball explains why jurors give, why they do not, and how to motivate them to do the former instead of the latter. He walks readers through voir dire, opening, testimony, and closing, providing practical, effective, and innovative methods for pursuing damages. Now, in this expanded, second edition, Ball includes methods to contend with the way today’s jurors view lawyers and their clients. The techniques provide tools to counter sophisticated opposition tactics, the public mood, and laws and rules that continue to grow more hostile.
