Ok, but No Freer 1 out of 5 stars.

E&E is a great series. I've found many of the books helpful in supplementing law school reading that can be at times difficult to synthesize. However, Freer's supplement on civil procedure is unbeatable.

Law school is about knowing the rule and applying the facts. E&E is great at helping you to know the rule. However, it doesn't help you figure out how to apply the facts, especially in a way pertinent to law school exams. Freer's book is full of examples and frameworks that assure success on your CivPro exam. This is especially true of the frameworks he lays out for analyzing Personal Jurisdiction problems and Erie.

Buy Freer and you'll be happier going into your final.

Editorial Review:

Students know they can count on expert study guide author Joseph W. Glannon to clarify even the most complicated topics. Unquestionable effectiveness earned his civil procedure guides their bestselling status. Extensively revised and updated for its Fifth Edition, "Civil Procedure: Examples & Explanations" continues to introduce the principles of civil procedure and illustrate how they apply in typical cases.

It was OK... 3 out of 5 stars.

Being in the financial services I am always looking for new and exciting books in my field...sadly, this is not one of them. The book was dry and made for a long read.

The upside is that the authors seem to know what they are talking about and are able to explain the ideas behind a variety of different asset protection strategies.

The authors also explain the benefits and drawbacks of each asset protection strategy, though they do not go into very much detail on some of their ideas.

One of the reasons is probably because at the end of the book, they provide their website as a reference. I don't have a problem with that, but it would have been nice if they had been able to make the information more interesting so that you didn't feel like you had to go to their website to "get the good stuff".

Editorial Review:

Strategies that are effective and legal for putting one’s assets safely out of reach

In today’s increasingly litigious world, the shielding of assets has become a prominent issue for financial planners, business owners, and high-net-worth individuals. Asset Protection details methods that are both legally and morally legitimate for protecting one’s assets from creditors, lawsuits, and scams.

Bringing economic common sense and legitimacy to an area that is drowning in gimmickry, two of today’s top lawyers examine the fundamental issues in this growing area, avoiding dense legalese to make the book accessible to anyone. Asset Protection covers everything readers want to know about:

  • Establishing an effective asset protection program
  • Today’s most popular, established strategies
  • Newer strategies that are still being resolved by the courts

Editorial Review:

Gerry Spence is perhaps America's most renowned and successful trial lawyer, a man known for his deep convictions and his powerful courtroom presentations when he argues on behalf of ordinary people. Frequently pitted against teams of lawyers thrown against him by major corporate or government interests, he has never lost a criminal case and has not lost a civil jury trial since l969.
In Win Your Case, Spence shares a lifetime of experience teaching you how to win in any arena-the courtroom, the boardroom, the sales call, the salary review, the town council meeting-every venue where a case is to be made against adversaries who oppose the justice you seek. Relying on the successful courtroom methods he has developed over more than half a century, Spence shows both lawyers and laypersons how you can win your cases as he takes you step by step through the elements of a trial-from jury selection, the opening statement, the presentation of witnesses, their cross-examinations, and finally to the closing argument itself.
Spence teaches you how to prepare yourselves for these wars. Then he leads you through the new, cutting-edge methods he uses in discovering the story in which you form the evidence into a compelling narrative, discover the point of view of the decision maker, anticipate and answer the counterarguments, and finally conclude the case with a winning final argument.
To make a winning presentation, you are taught to prepare the power-person (the jury, the judge, the boss, the customer, the board) to hear your case. You are shown that your emotions, and theirs, are the source of your winning. You learn the power of your own fear, of honesty and caring and, yes, of love. You are instructed on how to role-play through the use of the psychodramatic technique, to both discover and tell the story of the case, and, at last, to pull it all together into the winning final argument.
Whether you are presenting your case to a judge, a jury, a boss, a committee, or a customer, Win Your Case is an indispensable guide to success in every walk of life, in and out of the courtroom.

Suggested reading for pre-law school students, this book contains the representing attorney's actual story about a lawsuit involving the coal industry. The terminology, processes and struggles included in the story, as well as the lawyer's thought-processes and actions introduce the reader to the real world of legal advocacy, which is not parallel to the Law & Order dramas on television. If you're contemplating entering the legal profession, this book narrates one situation with enough detail to give you a feel for the work you may be doing.

Editorial Review:

One Saturday morning in February 1972, an impoundment dam owned by the Pittston Coal Company burst, sending a 130 million gallon, 25 foot tidal wave of water, sludge, and debris crashing into southern West Virginia's Buffalo Creek hollow. It was one of the deadliest floods in U.S. history. 125 people were killed instantly, more than 1,000 were injured, and over 4,000 were suddenly homeless. Instead of accepting the small settlements offered by the coal company's insurance offices, a few hundred of the survivors banded together to sue. This is the story of their triumph over incredible odds and corporate irresponsibility, as told by Gerald M. Stern, who as a young lawyer and took on the case and won.

I got it on time(only 5 days and I am in italy so 5 days is a good deal) the book was new like it was stated, still in plastik

Good book - informative 4 out of 5 stars.

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This book was well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed the material covered in the book.

Of course, the professor of the course I was taking added a lot of personal material which was extremely helpful, but overall this was a great book for the course.

There is definitely room for improvement as there were quite a few grammar and spelling errors in this book as well as two instances of absolutely incorrect legal information concerning family law which the professor had to bring to our attention.

Editorial Review:

"Family Law, 5th Edition," is an excellent introductory guide for anyone with an interest in family law. It provides an in-depth overview of family law with a focus on the skills needed by a paralegal working in this area. Such skills include legal analysis, legal interviewing, legal investigation, and legal research for the family law practice. This updated fifth edition has been expanded to include new information on such current, hot button family law topics as homosexual marriage, child support enforcement, and surrogate parenting.

This work, now in its third edition, is a useful primer for those who would like to understand the basics of the civil law tradition. Civil law systems are unfamiliar to most people who live and study in common law countries like the UK and US, but they're the predominant type of legal system in much of the world, so it's worth learning about them. Merryman's classic work gives a concise history of the development of civil law, which helps to explain some of its foundational principles and forms. He also explains how systems in this tradition generally operate today. An excellent and highly readable book.

    Editorial Review:

Designed for the general reader and students of law, this is a concise history and analysis of the civil law tradition, which is dominant in most of Europe, all of Latin America, and many parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. This new edition deals with recent significant events—such as the fall of the Soviet empire and the resulting precipitous decline of the socialist legal tradition—and their significance for the civil law tradition. The book also incorporates the findings of recent important literature on the legal cultures of civil law countries.

    Editorial Review:

NITA’s best-selling text, Modern Trial Advocacy: Analysis and Practice, has set the standard for trial advocacy texts since 1993. All NITA’s renowned full trial programs use the text, as do prominent law schools nationwide. Steven Lubet guides the beginning advocate from developing a winning case theory through all phases of trial. He explains how to present a case as a story, and how to tell the story to the jury powerfully and persuasively.

Since its initial publication, Lubet significantly enhanced the book in 1997 and now he revises it again to include a new chapter on the most recent revolution in trial advocacy: technology in the courtroom."Electronic Visuals," the new chapter by Edward R. Stein, provides a useful and insightful introduction to technology in the courtroom, ranging from evidentiary issues to practical advice. The new edition also includes updates to Federal Rules 702 and 703.

Modern Trial Advocacy contains separate sections on case theory, witness examination, making the record, and talking to the jury; a comprehensive discussion of case theory explaining how to test and develop alternate trial strategies; a portion of each chapter addressing ethics concerns as they arise in practice; and a unique chapter on persuasion theory describing how the principles of cognitive theory can be used to capture the jury’s imagination.

Modern Trial Advocacy presents a realistic and contemporary approach to learning and developing trial advocacy skills. Lubet writes in a clear, concise style that is attractive to both the beginning advocate and the experienced trial lawyer. And, most importantly, this book offers a sophisticated theory-driven approach to advocacy training that distinguishes it from other books in the field.
