This book is one of my 16-month old's favorite books. She can't wait for each of them to wake up and make a loud noise and then she thinks it's so funny when they go outside to play in the sun and then asks for me to read it again!

Editorial Review:

Audrey Wood. Let the whole class read along! Great big version of a great big favorite! A colorful riot of a bedtime story about sleepy people and animals napping in a cozy bed.

Board book snoring sounds wouldn't work outside the store 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My daughter saw this book in the store and was infatuated with it. She like the illustrations and giggled at the snoring sounds every time she opened the book. I returned to the mall a few days later to do some Christmas shopping and included this book in my purchases. I checked to make sure it worked before I left the store -- no problems.
Later that evening, I showed the book to my husband. It wouldn't snore! I opened it a dozen or so times, but nothing happened. A few days later, I returned to the bookstore and explained the situation, asking to exchange it for another copy. When I opened the book - voila! There was the noise!
The clerk let me exchange it anyways, and we checked to make sure the new copy worked. When I got outside, I ran into some friends from church. During the course of the conversation, I showed them the book. I opened it, and it didn't make the noise. After repeated attempts, I went back into the mall, and back into the bookstore. It worked fine.
At that point, highly frustrated, I asked if I could just exchange the board book for the original book, "Russell the Sheep", and pay the difference.
It turns out that we like the unabridged version of the story better anyways. The original book, "Russell the Sheep" has beautiful illustrations, a bit sillier story, and is an overall better purchase. We will have to keep it put up when we're not using it, so that our 1 1/2 year old daughter doesn't tear the pages, but we are excited to read it to her every night! It is a book that parents and children alike will enjoy reading over and over again.

Editorial Review:

This is Russell.

Sometimes Russell is just a little bit out of step with the rest of the flock.

All the sheep are falling asleep -- except Russell.

Russell tries everything ... until, at last, he falls asleep.

Nice collection of poems 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This collection of poems relate to bedtime and nighttime. While much shorter than Jack's better known collections ("New Kid on the Block", etc.), I believe the emotional range is broader in this book. This book includes wistful poems and cutesy-scary poems, that would feel out of place in Jack's funny poems compilations. Of course, there are many funny poems, but the real gems are the others.

High marks to Jack.

Editorial Review:

The childhood ritual of being put to bed has been a source of inspiration for children (and frustration for grownups) throughout the ages. Prolific children's poet Jack Prelutsky has taken this undeniable truism and run with it in My Parents Think I'm Sleeping, an eye-opening, poetic romp through the multitude of adventures that can take place after the lights have been turned out. From pleasant nighttime thoughts ("I have been in bed for hours, / but I'm sure I'm wide-awake, / for my head is filled with visions / of a forest by a lake.") to philosophical ponderings ("What happens to the colors / when night replaces day? / What turns the wrens to ravens, / the trees to shades of gray?"), children everywhere will relate to these soothing, sleepy poems. Illustrated by Yossi Abolafia with the foggy blues and grays of the gloaming, kids will love snuggling up with this book--in fact, it just might make tuck-in time a dream! (Ages 4 to 8)

One of Our Favorites 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm a children's librarian, so I come across a lot of books and very few stand up to many readings. This book is one of them. It's fun for the parents to read aloud, with a rolicking beat and humorous story. We've owned this book since my son's first birthday. He loved it then and at eighteen months, it is still one of his favorites. The illustrations are simple and pleasing with enough detail to invite a closer examination. I highly recommend it!

Best children's book ever!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 15-month old has loved this book since she was about 6 months old! I reccomend for every child! I'm so tired of reading this book.... ;)

Editorial Review:

It’s nap time on the farm, but one un-sleepy baby has a different plan...
Will Baby do the cha-cha? Will Mama flip her wig?
Will Baby dance the polka with a polka-dotted pig?
Perfect fun for young children who like lively stories, this happy tale invites all to join in and dance along. Read, sing, lift the flaps, do a little jig-and-twirl! It’s a toe-tappin’, no-nappin’ good time when baby starts to boogie.

fine children's book that helps them learn so much... 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I Am Not Going To Get Up Today (Beginner Books) by Dr. Seuss is a whimsical fantasy tale that should appeal to very young children. As another reviewer notes, young kids are full of energy; they don't truly want to stay in bed and this book won't encourage them to do that, either. However, the story makes a great fantasy and the book is also a solid educational tool for children learning to read.

The story is relatively simple; a young boy is tired and he wants to take the day off and lounge in bed. He is rather obstinate; even his mother and a cop can't get him out of bed! Along the way, the young child learns a lot about the English language and reading--and that's great.

Children are introduced to names of places including Paris, Massachusetts, Berlin, Alaska, China, Spain and more! This can easily generate a conversation with your child about what foreign (or distant) places are like; and the child can get a good basic understanding that the world is really a very large place with many different cultures.

This book also teaches children the sounds that some things make. For example, the book, usually through the use of text that rhymes, mentions how birds "peep;" how an alarm clock "rings;" how a bed can be "warm" and how a pillow can be "deep." Great!

I suppose that for some very active children the idea of a child taking a rest in bed could show them an example of the importance of learning to rest.

Overall, I Am Not Going To Get Up Today is another fine children's book by the great Dr. Seuss; and I recommend this book heartily for parents to read with their very young children. The book is an excellent educational tool that helps children learn to read and understand words, places and other concepts like "warm" and "deep."

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

Editorial Review:

Although I'm Not Going to Get Up Today! is aimed at young readers, it just gets better as you get older. Only after you've weathered more than few world-weary years can you fully appreciate this book's profound and universal message: "The alarm can ring. The birds can peep. My bed is warm. My pillow's deep. Today's the day I'm going to sleep!" But the rhyming words of Dr. Seuss and goofy illustrations from James Stevenson will surely get more than a few giggles from the old and the young, as everyone in town--from brothers and sisters to the police and the Marines--conspires to get our little hero out of bed. But, as the sleepy boy says, "nobody's going to get me up, no matter what he does." (Not with tickling nor shaking nor cold water on the head.) "Nothing's going to get me up. Why can't you understand! You'll only waste your money if you hire a big brass band." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

The Sleep Ponies is a magical, warm, and absolutely beautiful book. The dream-like illustrations and gentle rhythm of the words lulls my girls to sleep at night.

This book ought to be on the shelf of every child's bookcase.

A beautiful story for bedtime with magical illustrations that captivated even my 11 month old niece. I enjoyed reading it to her as much as she liked hearing it!

Help your imaginative child get to sleep! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This beautiful story gave my creative 8-year-old daughter (who loves horses)a new way to be willing to fall asleep. When she asks me (nightly) "How should I fall asleep tonight, mama?" I can answer, "Just call your sleep ponies." The writing is young for her level of reading, but I think keeping it simple at bedtime is the way to go, anyway. It's not time to rev up the thinking mind, after all, just the dreaming mind.

Editorial Review:

A fanciful foray into the imagination of a child can be found in the delightfully written and dazzlingly illustrated new children's book, The Sleep Ponies. Author/illustrator Gudrun Ongman, a professional sculptor and painter, has transformed her mother's bedtime tale into a lyrical myth about magic ponies that carry children away to golden fields of dreams. The sweet story, the evocative, description prose, and the warm, soft watercolors all combine to captivate both parent and child as they journey together to the land of The Sleep Ponies.

The language is simple and repeptitive, making this a great book to teach Spanish in Elementary and Middle grades. Illustrations are great. It's also a good book for native speakers practicing reading. I use it as a check-out book for English as a Second Language students, to motivate literacy acquisition.

Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the ýpulgaý in all of the pages.

Simple and Sweet 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loves this book as a must read every morning when he wakes up and every night before he goes to bed. We love searching for the mouse and the flea and seeing the movement of the characters before they end up on the bed or off of it. The colors and the change from night to day are so smooth you almost dont notice it.

Sharing my childhood with my grandchildren 5 out of 5 stars.

I was thrilled when I discovered Wynken, Blynken & Nod was still being printed. I believe of the two books I have saved from my childhood (I'll be 65 next week), this was one of them.

I treasured this book. It's a classic.

Today I found it has arrived. I am so sure that my grandchildren, 4 and 2 will love it as much as I did, that I bought it for them.

Wonderful Bedtime Story 5 out of 5 stars.

Eugene Field spins a marvelous bed time yarn with Wynken, Blynken, & Nod. Wonderfull Illustrations by Johana Westerman enhance this century old tale. It was my favorite bedtime story as a child, no violence, no villians, no nightmares. A fantasy delight that will send all young children off to dreamland with vivid and happy thoughts. Highly reccommended to parents and teachers, or anyone who cares for a child.

Perfectly wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

Captain Kangaroo sang this song on his show many years ago. I was fortunate to have
the leather bound edition of children's poems by Eugene Field that included this poem.

I sang "Wynken, Blynken & Nod" to all our children and all the children I have loved. The original
is a bit different and has more lyrics but the feel is the same. The color pictures
are beautiful. The song is a wonderful bedtime routine and the imagery is lovely. Also,
it is appropriate for either a boy or girl. This book makes a wonderful addition to any children's library.

We will be gifting and singing this poem to the children of the many children we
love.

Hiccups for Elephant 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The book Hiccups for Elephant is a great children's book. It is about an elephant that has the hiccups. The other animals in the book are trying to sleep. But elephant can't because he has the hiccups. Elephant wakes them up on accident. So in the story all the animals work together. So they can find a way he will stop hiccupping. The book is funny and teaches a great lesson. About how important it is to work together and try to figure things out. This book I think is for kids between ages 4 -7 years old. This is a great book and it's funny. With the small words it helps children learn to read. It's a great book for the kids. The person reading it will enjoy it too.

This is a great book to read to even the youngest readers. My daughter is almost 2 and LOVES this book. We read it three or four times each time we sit down to read. And from other reviews, it will continue to be a great book for when she is learning to read.

Delightful Dignity 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Mem Fox's story about the evening adventure of an older lady is told with dignity and joy. As Lily dozes by the fire, she dreams of her life and how it has changed. What an excellent way to introduce children to the concept that as they grow and change, the important things stay the same, such as love and family. It is also a delightful way to assure young children that though family members and neighbors may be old and seem very different, they have lived a life very similar. In our society, often the elderly are portrayed as a burden and not a blessing. Instead of focusing upon the contributions that these people have made, and continue to make, we discuss the burden of "caring for them." This book is a great way to show young children what older people may really be like. Most importantly, it is a sweet book about a delightful old lady and her adorable dog. Children and adults alike will be enthralled by the fabulous illustrations and the mystery of the "Night Noises." This is a book I highly recommend to all readers of quality children's literature. If you have never enjoyed a Mem Fox story before, this is a fabulous way to find a new favorite author.

Editorial Review:

As elderly Lily Laceby dozes by the fire, her dog, Butch Aggie, becomes alarmed by strange noises outside. Finally awakened by Butch Aggie’s growls and barks, Lily finds a lovely surprise waiting for her. “The language, pacing, tension, and sparks of excitement are absolutely at one with the artwork.”--The Horn Book
