What is WRONG with you people? 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who buys into Nugent's "patriot" hype is somehow totally misinformed. He was a well-known draft dodger back in the Vietnam era. All of his flag-waving is nothing but a publicity stunt. As for his big talk about values, he has the morals of an alleycat.

Why is it that the radical right-wing these days has to promote chickenhawks and hypocrites as their spokesmen?

Why do so many otherwise fully functioning, well-meaning Americans buy into their bull?

If you want to promote this clown's masquerade as an uberpatriot, then buy this book. If you're truly concerned about the future of our country, then speak out against these merchants of intolerance. America works best when we work together. These guys who try to turn us against one another are doing a lot more harm than good. They appeal to your base emotions, without providing any solutions. Don't be sucked in.

Editorial Review:

Rock and Roll legend Ted Nugent contends that a lot of what is wrong with this country could be remedied by a simple, but controversial concept: gun ownership.

I totally agree with authors but this book was very poorly written. 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Alan Gottlieb and Dave Workman make a noble effort in "America Fights Back" but the book is seriously flawed, in my opinion. That's surprising because the authors have very impressive credentials. In fact, Alan Gottlieb's credentials are so long that I don't have time to list them here and I wondered where he found the time to achieve so many things in his life as I read his resume. As a personal note, I want to make it clear that I am a strong 2nd Amendment supporter, a life member of the NRA, The Illinois Rifle Association, a new member of The Second Amendment Foundation (which Gottlieb founded), and a member of a couple other gun-rights groups. In short, I completely agree with the points made in this book and my viewpoint is biased.

Before I discuss what I believe are the serious flaws of this book, I will describe its thrust in one sentence: Basically, one case after another of an armed law-abiding citizen stopping a criminal attack is described, interspersed with commentary about the various issues involving gun control.

My criticisms: The stories become repetitive and redundant quickly and I found myself wishing that the authors would have written more about the underlying issues. The book almost read like 200 pages of the monthly column "Armed Citizen" that is in NRA publications except that the NRA does not express the obvious joy that the authors of this book clearly feel about the shooting of a criminal. After the 100th story about someone shooting a criminal while defending themselves, my eyes began to glaze over. I felt like saying, "O.K! I get the point!" But I already understood the point!

Secondly, the book is poorly written and edited. It is riddled with grammatical errors, punctuation errors, sentence structure errors, and even spelling errors. This does not represent the cause well and could give the wrong impression to readers who are making their own decisions about gun control. I was going to include a couple examples of that very poor writing but I honestly couldn't choose from among them. Virtually every page - almost every paragraph, in fact - is riddled with writing errors. I found myself wishing that the authors would have sent me the book for proof-reading! Some of the errors may have occurred during publishing but some of them were simply poor writing. I winced at some of them and I quickly realized that this is not a book that I would recommend to someone who is on the fence on gun control issues. In fact, I am not even recommending this book to my wife who is also an NRA member. In addition to that, the authors constantly use cliché's that become very irritating after a while. The book has a "Make my day!" tone to it that is not good for the cause of gun-rights advocates.

Another criticism is that, in one of the very first self-defense shooting descriptions of the book, the authors mention that the perpetrator of a criminal attack was an African American. Now, nobody is more sick and tired than I am of political correctness but there was absolutely no reason to mention the man's race. After all, nowhere in the book do they mention that a perpetrator was white. I am not suggesting in any way that the authors are racists but I am saying that they should have used better judgment. It was totally unnecessary and could easily be taken wrong and it, along with many of their other comments made in the book, could give someone the impression that the authors might be bitter, racist, red-necks. In fact, they don't even hide their delight at the fact that yet another "scumbag" was killed. Don't get me wrong: I agree in principle with what they are saying but their style could damage the very cause that they promote. Now, if they gave a statistical breakdown of criminal activity by race, that would be acceptable. But if I was an African American reader, that comment would have offended me. In fact, it offended me and I'm white! The authors should remember that we need to enlist the African American community in this cause and African Americans probably have more at stake in self-defense issues because they tend to live in larger cities with more prevalent crime.

That said, it should be remembered that most people who read this book are almost certainly supporters of the 2nd Amendment already. For them, this book will not change their minds. It will just confirm what they already think. The important readers to reach are the people who are gathering information on the subject but haven't yet decided what their position is. Some of those people may respond positively to this book but I think that many will be turned off by what they read.

Supporters of the 2nd Amendment should strive to make a good impression on those they are trying to influence. They should present their case thoughtfully and respectfully and they should certainly have a high degree of literacy - or at least a good editor! I have seen far too many instances where gun-rights writers put their worst foot forward and hurt the very cause that they are trying to promote. In fact, some articles I have read including an almost unbelievable and absolutely absurd and irresponsible article in The Illinois Shooter a year or two ago (the newspaper of the Illinois Rifle Association) could easily be used by gun-ban groups for propaganda purposes. Unfortunately, that is the case with this book to some degree. But for readers who are already 2nd Amendment supporters and don't mind rather poor writing, this book may have some useful information for them. As for myself, I didn't learn anything new. But I do applaud Gottlieb and Workman for their tireless efforts on behalf of 2nd Amendment supporters and law-abiding gun owners.

Gripping stories of armed self-defense by law abiding American citizens, woven into analysis of gun control laws and a broken justice system, and how they have failed to protect us.

Americans Aren't Stupid! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

John R Lott is a true patriot and his book, 'The Bias Against Guns: Why Almost Everything You've Heard About Gun Control Is Wrong' should be included as part of the Bible. Every God-fearing American is duty-bound to heed Lott's warning about the liberal, jelly-back movement that is threatening to destroy the country's long-cherished freedoms. However, while I agree 100% with the author, there is a significant argument missing when he says that everything you've heard about gun control is wrong. It's an obvious point that we haven't heard and one that is intellectually unassailable; GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, BULLETS DO! Therefore, pass a law allowing everyone to own as many guns as they want; 10, 20, 100. Sell them in libraries, bookshops, gas stations, nightclubs and schools. Give them to children, psychopaths, teachers, social workers, prisoners and even terrorists. But at the same time, pass another law banning bullets. It's that simple. This revolution in social policy will not only silence the white ants in the White House, it will also show the rest of the world that Americans can solve problems that lesser minds find impossible to conquer.

Editorial Review:

Slicing through the emotional--but factually wrong--arguments of gun control advocates this book busts a number of myths, demonstrating with hard statistical data and riveting anecdotes.

Badly Dated: a voice out of 1999 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This might have been a good book in 1999, when the author wrote it. Despite its 2002 copyright date, the original printing was 2000, and most of it was written in the 1990s and not updated. So, if you want a detailed look at what guns were available almost 10 years ago, this is it. If you want up-to-date information on CC handguns, this is a waste of money. The other is highly opinionated, and won't even discuss smaller caliber guns, so it's 9mm Luger and up only, folks. Also, many of the models he discusses in detail are no longer made (or are made by other manufacturers now) and many of the very best, most advanced and up-to-date guns aren't covered here because they didn't exist. Overall, this is a historical piece only. It is badly in need of a new edition, and not a quick makeover, but a ground-up rewrite. $16.50 for what you get is too much. There are far better, more up-to-date books out there on the subject.

Editorial Review:

Once you have made the all-important decision to get a concealed-carry weapon permit, you face a dilemma - how to determine the perfect carry piece from the dizzying array of choices available in modern handguns. Before you invest your money in and trust your life to one weapon, get the opinion of an expert - someone who's personally tested handguns from every major manufacturer and experimented with models, calibers and types of ammunition, all with the specific needs of concealed carry in mind. Contains in-depth analyses of small, medium and large pistols and revolvers by makers such as S&W, Glock, Colt, Ruger, Taurus and more.

Editorial Review:

Multiple regression analyses are rarely the subject of heated public debate or 225-page books for laypeople. But John R. Lott, Jr.'s study in the January 1997 Journal of Legal Studies showing that concealed-carry weapons permits reduced the crime rate set off a firestorm. The updated study, together with illustrative anecdotes and a short description of the political and academic response to the study, as well as responses to the responses, makes up Lott's informative More Guns, Less Crime.

In retrospect, it perhaps should not have been surprising that increasing the number of civilians with guns would reduce crime rates. The possibility of armed victims reduces the expected benefits and increases the expected costs of criminal activity. And, at the margin at least, people respond to changes in costs, even for crime, as Nobel-Prize winning economist [TAG]Gary Becker showed long ago. Allusions to the preferences of criminals for unarmed victims have seeped into popular culture; Ringo, a British thug in Pulp Fiction, noted off-handedly why he avoided certain targets: "Bars, liquor stores, gas stations, you get your head blown off stickin' up one of them."

But Lott's actual quantification of this, in the largest and most comprehensive study of the effects of gun control to date, a study well-detailed in the book, provoked a number of attacks, ranging from the amateurish to the subtly misleading, desperate to discredit him. Lott takes the time to refute each argument; it's almost touching the way he footnotes each time he telephones an attacker who eventually hangs up on him without substantiating any of their claims.

Lott loses a little focus when he leaves his firm quantitative base; as an economist, he should know that the low number of rejected background checks under the Brady Bill doesn't demonstrate anything by itself, because some people may have been deterred from even undergoing the background check in the first place, but he attacks the bill on this ground anyway. But the conclusions that are backed by evidence--that concealed-weapons permits reduce crime, and do so at a lower cost to society than increasing the number of police or prisons--are important ones that should be considered by policymakers. --Ted Frank

Editorial Review:

The United Nations wants your guns. They want all of them-now-and they've found a way to do it. In fact, the U.N. is so cocksure it can commandeer the Second Amendment that it chose the Fourth of July, 2006, to hold its global gun ban summit in New York City. If you think there's no way an armed U.N. platoon of blue helmets can knock on your door to take your guns, this book just became your next must-read.

Wayne LaPierre's The Global War on Your Guns takes you inside the U.N. plan to destroy the Bill of Rights by attacking the one right that makes any right possible, the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

LaPierre's well-researched chapters outline the threat itself, how the U.N. works, and the phalanx of international forces determined to eliminate the basic human right of self-preservation through elimination of all private firearm ownership.

In The Global War on Your Guns you will learn:

  • How a 1997 land mine treaty molded the U.N.'s new strategy
  • How the U.N. funnels your tax dollars to anti-gun member nations
  • Why the U.S. domestic gun-ban crowd is investing big in the U.N.
  • What U.N. disarmament has done to once-free peoples of the world
  • How extreme U.N. gun laws can be enforced on Americans-even without a new treaty!

LaPierre exposes the labyrinth of international connections and cash flow that have moved this chilling threat from blueprint to binding treaty. At center stage, LaPierre spotlights global billionaires like George Soros and a colossal coalition of domestic and worldwide gun-ban and animal-rights groups led by the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) and its zealous leader, Rebecca Peters.

In previous books, LaPierre dissected the cultural war smoldering within American borders. But now, as LaPierre writes, "This is America's cultural war gone global." Read how to win it now, in the pages of The Global War on Your Guns.

Not a how-to book, but very eye-opening 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is basically an illustrated argument against the concept of gun-banning legislature being effective in keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals. There are many photos and examples of improvised single shot weapons using the .22 catridge that hardly look like conventional weapons. What they lack in stopping power and accuracy, they make up for with relative ease of construction, accessability of materials, and concealment. Many of these examples were confiscated from inmates in prisons. Which raises the question: if criminals can make guns in federal prisons, then how can gun laws prevent them from doing so when they are free in the streets?
Later in the book, there are examples of more sophisticated weapons, like reproduced AK-47's and the like by local craftsmen in third world areas.
It's interesting (and to some, perhaps unnerving) to see a shotgun made by a 15 year old from simple pipes that is capable of firing a 12 gauge round.
What could have made it better is if it featured cutaway illisrations showing the inside of some of these devices, like where the round is places, where the firing pin is located, and the mechanism that activates it.
Overall, if you are interested in improvised weapons and/or odd devices, then its worth the money. Just be advised that it is not a how-to manual.

Editorial Review:

In this book, J. David Truby demonstrates why gun control simply doesn't work. Features rare photos of remarkably ingenious and very deadly improvised weapons made by guerrillas, secret agents, criminals and freedom fighters, all collected from prisons, police departments and Third World countries. For information purposes only.

Editorial Review:

The Toboggan Ride to Tyranny

Your right to trial by a randomly selected jury -- not one stacked with jurors who swear to convict in advance -- is gone.

The IRS can now seize your bank account, paycheck, and house -- without so much as a judge's order. Your banker will help them.

Vietnam veterans and their wives, and 68-year-old engineers, are in federal prisons on "drug" charges -- despite the fact they never sold, touched, or even saw a single gram of cocaine or marijuana.

The Founders guaranteed Americans the right to keep and bear arms for defense against their own government. But the meager legal arms of the Branch Davidians were no match for government tanks and helicopters at Waco. National gun registration led to confiscation in oncr-free England and Australia. And national gun registration began in the U.S. on December 1, 1998.

How did we get to this point? Is there any peaceful way back from the toboggan ride to tyranny? The answers are in "Send in the Waco Killers," by America's syndicated Libertarian columnist, Vin Suprynowicz.
