Finding happiness and a better life by taking responsibilty for it 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a business parable, but really more of a life parable. The book provides seven lessons about taking responsibility and control of your life. Rather than letting your circumstances provide you with reasons for reacting to life and letting difficulties turning into personal failure, Andy Andrews preaches what some call an internal locus of control. No matter what happens to you, it is up to you to take charge and do something about it. Book is about David Ponder. He is a middle-aged guy with a great wife and a daughter. Like so many people who have been in a comfortable job for decades and then lost it, he finds his life spinning out of control. Unable to get a job anywhere close to the one he had before, without health insurance, and getting fired for merely using the phone to talk with his wife about his sick daughter, he wonders if his family wouldn't be better off with his life insurance than him. Driving recklessly fast, he spins out on some ice and wakes up talking to Harry Truman, then Solomon, and so on until he wakes up with his wife and daughter worrying over him in a hospital.

The seven lessons are very good affirmations to meditate on every day of your life:
1) The buck stops here. I am responsible for my past and my future.
2) I will seek wisdom. I will be a servant to others.
3) I am a person of action. I seize this moment. I choose now.
4) I have a decided heart. My destiny is assured.
5) Today I will choose to be happy. I am the possessor of a grateful spirit.
6) I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I will forgive myself.
7) I will persist without exception. I am a person of great faith.

After each of his encounters in history, David reads a short essay on each of these lessons and, of course, we read it, too.

My own take is that this is a superb book for teenagers just deciding who they want to be in life, young adults who want to sharpen their path, and adults who want to get on a different and better path to getting control of their life.

No, this is not profound art. However, the lessons can have a profound affect on your life and help you enjoy more, achieve more, and bless the lives of others more.

Editorial Review:

Much like the best-selling books by Og Mandino, this unique narrative is a blend of entertaining fiction, allegory, and inspiration.  Storyteller Andy Andrews gives a front-row seat for one man's journey of a lifetime. David Ponder has lost his job and the will to live. When he is supernaturally selected to travel through time, he visits historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, King Solomon, and Anne Frank. Each visit yields a Decision for Success that will one day impact the entire world.

Editorial Review:

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Truman, here is the national bestselling epic chronicle of the creation of the Panama Canal. In The Path Between the Seas, acclaimed historian David McCullough delivers a first-rate drama of the sweeping human undertaking that led to the creation of this grand enterprise.

The Path Between the Seas tells the story of the men and women who fought against all odds to fulfill the 400-year-old dream of constructing an aquatic passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is a story of astonishing engineering feats, tremendous medical accomplishments, political power plays, heroic successes, and tragic failures. Applying his remarkable gift for writing lucid, lively exposition, McCullough weaves the many strands of the momentous event into a comprehensive and captivating tale.

Winner of the National Book Award for history, the Francis Parkman Prize, the Samuel Eliot Morison Award, and the Cornelius Ryan Award (for the best book of the year on international affairs), The Path Between the Seas is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, the history of technology, international intrigue, and human drama.

contains valuable information on what to expect emotionally from and how to interact with a dying loved one. the author assumes life after life, which is unknown in reality. this affects her interpretations of the departings' experience. if you can overlook this, it's a good book.

Not Helpful If You & All Your Loved Ones Are Immortal, But The Rest Of Us... 4 out of 5 stars.

Ms. Callanan and Ms. Kelley have written a guide of different ways patients may react in the process of dying and how everyone involved can be somewhat prepared for what happens towards the end of life. It is very much written in layman's terms. You won't have to worry about cracking open a dictionary for this baby. This book was a great help to my wife when she, her dad and her four siblings helped their dying mother. Many of the examples cited in this book did occur during the final week. The book is illuminating and will give the reader a great deal of comfort. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Some Good Ideas Tainted by a Dumbed-down Infomercial Style 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In an attempt to make his book accessible to the masses, Dr. Murphy has taken a useful truth that contemplatives throughout history have known for centuries and diluted it and dumbed it down to the point that it looses much of its believability. For example, on page 22, he relates a story in which a man says, he would, "...give his right arm" to see his daughter healed from her arthritis and psoriasis. He then goes on to say that, "one day" the family got into an automobile accident in which the man lost his arm, but from that point on the daughter's medical problems disappeared. Oh come on! I know an urban legend when I hear one! If your going to make a wild claim like that, you need to back it up with specific documentation, something Dr. Murphy fails to do. Another example of an extraordinary claim which he fails to back up is on page 19 where he states, "Your subjective mind can leave your body, travel to distant lands and bring back information that is often of the most exact and truthful character." A claim like that needs to be thoroughly backed up by pages of specific, documented accounts, not just thrown in to be believed without a challenge! I've studied at length the results of the CIA funded SRI study on remote viewing and I can tell you that there is no evidence whatsoever that such a thing is in any way possible! Another problem I have with the book is it's insistance on using Christian references and biblical verses as proof of the doctor's claims. While he does this in a more deistic fashion than mainstream Christianity, it still becomes an unwanted and unnecessary distraction. He also has a rather unique definition of prayer which he uses often when a more accurate word for what he proposes would be meditation or self-hypnosis. He also mentions nothing about the corresponding brainwave states - in this case alpha and theta - which relate to the proper mental state for self-healing. Finally, he looses what little credibility he has left with his use of infomercial-like "carny" sales technics. Phrases like, "Get the promotion you want...", and Miracles will happen to you, too..." make the book sound more like a Robert Tilton fundamentalist pep rally than a useful strategy for improving your life. If you're interested in this subject, I would recommend any of Ken Wilber's books, particularly, "The Simple Feeling of Being". Ken's books are extremely useful and don't insult your intelligence like Dr. Murphy's does.

Editorial Review:

You can improve your relationships, your finances, your physical well-being. Once you learn how to use this unbelievably powerful force there is nothing you will not be able to accomplish. Editorial Review:

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL.

Editorial Review:

Houston televangelist Joel Osteen is well qualified to write this book, having used the seven principles he shares to achieve his own "rags-to-riches" story. At the heart of Osteen's message is that achieving a successful, prosperous life of fulfillment can only occur when we stop worrying about the past or future to make the most of each present moment by using our God-given strengths and talents to achieve our goals. The key to doing so are the seven steps Osteen outlines: Enlarge Your Vision, Develop a Healthy Self-Image, Discover the Power of Your Thoughts and Words, Let go of the Past, Find Strength Through Adversity, Live to Give, and Choose to Be Happy. Mixing biblical teachings with his own personal experiences, Osteen explains each of these seven steps in an encouraging, optimistic manner that makes them accessible to anyone interested in principles of personal growth. Although written with a Christian slant, the seven steps Osteen shares will have value to anyone wanting to know more about practical steps of self-betterment, regardless of their denomination.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

Editorial Review:

Intention is generally viewed as a pit-bull kind of determination propelling one to succeed at all costs by never giving up on an inner picture. In this view, an attitude that combines hard work with an indefatigable drive toward excellence is the way to succeed. However, intention is viewed very differently in this book. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has researched intention as a force in the universe that allows the act of creation to take place. This book explores intention—not as something you do—but as an energy you’re a part of. We’re all intended here through the invisible power of intention. This is the first book to look at intention as a field of energy that you can access to begin co-creating your life with the power of intention.

Part I deals with the principles of intention, offering true stories and examples on ways to make the connection. Dr. Dyer identifies the attributes of the all-creating universal mind of intention as creative, kind, loving, beautiful, expanding, endlessly abundant, and receptive, explaining the importance of emulating this source of creativity. In Part II, Dr. Dyer offers an intention guide with specific ways to apply the co-creating principles in daily life. Part III is an exhilarating description of Dr. Dyer’s vision of a world in harmony with the universal mind of intention.

Anything but scholarly 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book as it was recommended to me by a discussion partner. She gave it high marks and I was looking forward to seeing what it said. Unfortunately, I learned by the beginning of Chapter 2 that Mr. Strobel is not, in fact, a scholar worthy of the name. Rather he makes claims for which he can provide no valid citation, and in what can only be described as great arrogance, cites himself in other situations.

If Mr. Strobel wishes this book to be considered an objective, scholarly investigation than I will hold him to such standards. He fails. Miserably.

The Case for Faith 4 out of 5 stars.

3 July 2008 - This book is the link from The Case for Christ to The Case for a Creator. He hits several points on why faith is so important but he dwells to long on the evolutionist argument which draws from his beautiful point by point analysis of why there is an intelligent reason to have faith. Strobel masterfully handles evolutionist argument in The Case for a Creator which I read first and turned me on to The Case for... series.

Editorial Review:

This eagerly anticipated audio sequel to Lee Strobel’s best-selling The Case for Christ finds the author investigating the nettlesome issues and doubts of  the heart that threaten faith. Eight major topics are addressed including doubt, the problem of pain, and the existence of evil.  Read by Lee Strobel.

Editorial Review:

If you listen to the media, you would think that man-made environmental catastrophe was about to engulf the world and imperil civilization. From Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth to nightly jeremiads about CO2 emissions and carbon footprints, we are bombarded around the clock with alarmist reports that disasterous global warming is on the rise and that it's our fault. In Climate Confusion, noted climatologist Roy Spencer shows that fears about global warming are vastly exaggerated and are driven by politics, not truth. He shows that a global superstorm has already arrived-but it is a storm of hype and hysteria. Climate Confusion is a ground-breaking book that combines impeccable scientific authority with great wit and literary panache to expose the hysteria surrounding the myths of global warming and climate change. Spencer shows that the earth is far more resilient than exopessimists pretend and that increasing wealth and technology ingenuity, far from being the enemies of the environment, are the only means we possess to solve environmental problems as they arise.
